626/Y2 ME584 Aircraft Cat. E.
Transferred to E.C.F.S.
F/O V.S. Breckenridge 2026hrs to 2434hrs 20,000’ Target area. 180 I.A.S.
First attack.
While on the bombing run a single engine fighter attacked on the Starboard quarter, firing a long burst from close range. This initial burst killed the wireless operator Sgt. J. Hall, and severely wounded the rear gunner Sgt. J. Schwartz in the foot. A cannon shell burst in the mid upper turret, injuring the gunner P/O W.J. Baker in the right side of his face and rendering him unconcious [sic]. The aircraft damage from this attack was heavy. Oxygen system partially U/S. Hydraulic system U/S. Bomb doors hanging open., Three R.P.M. indicators and boost gauges U/S. Intercom from rest bed aft U/S. Elevators and rudders damaged. Rudder trimmers U/S. D. R. and Gyro compasses U/S. Number one petrol tank holed. Partial failure of the Electrical System.
Second attack:
One minute after the first. Firing a 5 second burst. As both gunners were out of action the pilot had no warning but did his best to evade. However further damage occured, [sic] the pilot was injured in the leg, and the navigator W/O R.J. Meek was severely wounded with one bullet through the left breast close to the heart and a second through the left shoulder.
Third and fourth attacks.
These caused further damage, with the pilot taking what evasive action he could by avoiding the enemy tracer. When the mid upper gunner regained conciousness [sic] he climbed out of his turret, found the wireless operator dead, the rear gunner unconcious [sic] on the rest bed, and the navigator seriously wounded. Realising the aircraft was unprotected, he manned the rear turret despite being wounded, no oxygen, no intercom, inadequate dress and a U/S turret.
Despite his severe wounds and loss of blood the navigator continued his duties – with such accuracy that landfall was made only three miles North of track. While crossing the North sea fires broke out in the aircraft due to a complete breakdown of the electrical system. P/O Baker left the rear turret to aid with the fire fighting, returning to his post afterwards. There aircraft made a successful landing at Docking:
Sgt: J. Schwartz and W.0. R.J. Meek were: admitted to the R.A.F. Hospital Ely. Sgt. James Hall 1342144 is buried; in Ardrossan Cemetery, Ayrshire.
The following immediate awards were made:
Navigator. W/0 R.J. Meek C.G.M.
Pilot. F/O V.S. Breckenridge D.F.C

HEMSWELL 214
[underlined] LEGEND [/underlined]
And it came to pass there was bitter fighting in the Kingdom of Avalon, and great monsters with wings flew to the Land of the Huns and spread fire and laid waste the countryside of the Teutonic Knights. King Arthur and all the knights of the Round Table, together with many Knights and Squires from distant lands – even from strange lands across the Northern Ocean – did ride to battle and to joust in mortal combat against the Knights and men-at-arms of the Black King.
[page break]
Thus it came about that Merlin advised King Arthur to ride forth against the Wicked King on the [deleted] 3 [/deleted] XXXth night of the first month, as there was no moon, and to smite him in his lair which stood in the centre of a Great City which was called Burlyne. Accordingly all of King Arthurs' Knights, as was their custom on these occasions, donned great coats of mail and finely spun jerkins and leather casques and divers [sic] other armour, and their waiting men helped them into great machines which Merlin had made with much magic and cunning workmanship.
[page break]
In the cavalcade which rode forth into the starlit night was one Sir Gwillam of Breckenridge who hailed from the Northernmost bounds of the Isle of Avalon, and his chief Squire and advisor was named Richard, Son of Horace, an old knight who dwelt in the furthermost reaches beyond the setting sun, and by means of magic and by divining from the stars which were at that time in the House of Capricornus the Goat. A great multitude of Knights rode through the darkness until they saw before them the gates of the Castle of Burlyne. But the people of the Land of the Huns were
[page break]
hostile and threw great burning embers and missiles of iron and molten lead, and they lighted the darkness with strange torches, and many of King Arthurs Knights did fall by the wayside, being grievously wounded, and having come upon the Walled City of Burlyne the Chief Squire did advise Sir Gwillam to charge with his lance upon the centre of the Fortress of the Wicked King that one of the lesser squires could drop a great stone upon the base and rude people living in the Kingdom of Germania.
But even as the Fair Knight came upon the fortress, one of the Teutonic
[page break]
Knights bore down upon him riding hard upon a swift steed and he thrust with his lance while his squire did shoot flaming arrows upon King Arthurs' Knight and his goodly crew. Yet even as he did charge did Sir Gwillam evade him, and his manservant dropped the great stone upon the castle where it smote right heavily and the people in the Land of Evil were sore afraid. The Black Knight thrust thrice and Sir Gwillam and his band were sorely tried. One of his servants, Hamish by name, from the Northern
[page break]
Reaches of Ayrshire was struck and fell mortally wounded, and the blood did gush from his mouth, he thereupon did die unshriven, there being no priest nearby.
And he who rode upon the tail of the Monster was struck by flying arrows, and was sore afraid. Richard the Chief Squire was grievous wounded by the Black Knight whose sword did smite at his heart, but the evil Knights thrust was parried and the sword did miss his heart by as little as half the length of a thumb.
[page break]
Now Merlin, by means of a magic box saw what had befallen Sir Gwillam and he caused a blindness to fall upon the Black Knight. By sorcery and magic orisons he cast a spell upon all the Teutonic Knights and their squires. Merlin's engines of war did bear away Sir Gwillam and the body of Hamish his servant together with his goodly crew.
Now the Squire Richard being sorely wounded did by means of magic practices and by great cunning, advise Sir Gwillam how to get out of the Forest of Darkness unseen. And they slipped away quietly nor were molested by the people of Germania. Much
[page break]
woe had been caused by King Arthurs men, and the rude people of the Hun were sore afraid and waxed wroth, but they could not find Sir Gwillam.
And upon the second watch of the night the squire Richard spake unto the Knight saying 'Sire, but look you upon yonder horizon and you shall see the fair Isle of Avalon." And Sir Gwillam looked and it was as the Squire had spoken whereupon he was filled with joy. So he did descend upon the land, being directed thither by great tapers of light which the people threw up into the sky.
[page break]
But great was the speed of Merlin's war machine – even faster than the winds, its landing did sorely shake all of his household, but they were not afraid. The mighty charger was mortally wounded as it lay upon the greensward, and all the common people marvelled saying "The magic of Merlin hath prevailed over the Black Knight".
Now the Squire being sorely wounded was supported by divers men-at-arms, and he fell into a swoon. Thus he was borne away, together with one of the archers. They were taken to a great infirmary hard by the City of Ely, and the leech was summoned and came and plucked from his breast the arrow

of lead which had entered Richard.
And he dwelt therein for the full space of a new moon. Fair maidens did bathe his wounds and comforted him whilst page-boys did bring him meat and drink.
And it came to pass that King Arthur and his Good Queen Guenieve [sic] didst hear of the Knights adventures, and he summoned all of the Knights men to appear before him. And at the day of the Investiture King Arthur pinned upon Sir Gwillam the Noble Riband of the Distinguished Flying Cross. And to the Chief Archer also he gave the

And upon the breast of the Chief Squire, Richard, King Arthur attached the Riband of the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal. Thus came upon the crew of Sir Gwillam much Honour. A great feasting and merry-making befell them and all the Knights of the Round Table.
So endeth the tale.

SUPPLEMENT TO THE LONDON GAZETTE, 22 FEBRUARY
[boxed] though desperately wounded and suffering intensely, refused to leave his post. Although deprived of practically all his navigational equipment he plotted the route [missing word] with great skill. Eventually, Flying Officer Breckenridge reached base where he effected a successful crash-landing. His skill, courage and coolness in the face of heavy odds were worthy of the highest praise. Pilot Officer Baker and Warrant Officer Meek proved themselves to be valiant members of aircraft crew, displaying great courage, fortitude and devotion to duty. In spite of their injuries and much suffering they did all that was possible to assist in the safe return of the aircraft. [/boxed]

Bullet An Inch Off Heart: Got Bomber Back
"DAILY HERALD" REPORTER
A GERMAN bullet was lodged an inch from his heart. Another was in his shoulder. Yet Warrant Officer Meek, R C A F, carried on.
There was no one else to plot the bomber's course home from Germany.
Dead over his instruments lay the wireless operator. Unconscious, from a bullet wound to the face, was Pilot-Officer Baker, mid-upper gunner. And the rear gunner was so badly shot up that he couldn't use his gun.
One man dead, four others badly hit by a Nazi fighter's fire.
That was the situation when Flying-Officer Breckenridge, captain of the bomber "Y" Yoke, looked around.
His orders were to bomb the target. Nothing was going to stop him . . .
The fighters were moving in for the kill. Pilot-Officer Baker recovered. He must defend "Y Yoke". Somehow he dragged himself up to the rear turret.
Numbed with cold, biting his lips against the pains of his wounds, and gasping from lack of oxygen, he stayed there.
And fought off the attackers.
Skid Landing
At last they reached their base. The pilot, knowing the landing gear would not work, skidded the riddled bomber on its bomb doors on to the runway.
The story is told in the latest list of R A F awards issued last night.
The pilot who refused to turn back, Flying Officer Breckenridge, wins the D.F.C.
The gunner who crawled to man the guns, Pilot Officer Baker, also gets the D.F.C.
And the man with the bullet near his heart, Warrant Officer Meek, is awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (Flying).
Lancaster Lands on Bomb-door
After Berlin Flight
By Daily Mail Reporter
A BULLET-RIDDLED Lancaster with most of its crew wounded in a battle with a German fighter over Berlin last Monday night, landed at an R.A.F. station in south-east England on its bomb doors.
The under-carriage would not drop and the bomb doors were jammed open.
The oxygen and hydraulic systems, the engine room panel, the elevator and rudders, the rudder trimmers and the "intercomm" had all been damaged, and the petrol tank holed.
The Lancaster "Y for Yoke" was on its bombing run when a German fighter suddenly opened fire from close range.
The first burst killed the wireless operator, knocked both gunners unconscious, and riddled the bomber.
Four Attacks
The pilot, Flying Officer W. Breckenridge, a native of Glasgow, put the bomber into a dive, then levelling out a second time, carried on with his bombing run.
The bombs had scarcely left when the enemy fighter attacked again from the port side. This time the navigator, Warrant Officer J. Meek, of Vancouver, was badly wounded.
By evasive action Flying [missing word] Breckenridge shook off the [missing word/s] but it came in again [missing word/s] crashed in to the cockpit [missing word/s] the pilot's legs.

THE STAR WEEKLY. TORONTO, MAY 6th, 1944. [/underlined]
[underlined] FOURTH FLIGHT TO BERLIN
by
Frederick Griffin
(Star Weekly Staff Reporter)
By Special Cable to the Star Weekly from London. [/underlined]
That day, having recovered from his wounds, Jack Meek of Vancouver was going back on operations. "How do you feel about it?" I asked him. The tall, ruddy, blond navigator with the unwavering blue eyes answered honestly, and when you wear the coveted C.G.M. ribbon you can afford to be honest. "They say you feel a bit shaky at first, but that once you get the feel of it again you'll be all right".
Jack Meek was rejoining the same R.A.F. crew with whom he had made that fearful trip back from Berlin in January. Not all the same crew. There would be a new wireless operator, for Sergt. Jimmy Hall had been killed that night. And the wounded leg of Sergt. Joe Schwartz of Windsor, Ont., rear gunner, wasn't healed enough yet to let him take his place. But the rest were all crewed up as before, all set for another prang at Berlin, Frankfurt or Nuremberg.
There were P.O. William Breckenridge of Glasgow, the pilot, who won the D.F.C. that night and was now flight lieutenant; W.O. Richard Jack Meek, the navigator, shortly to get his commission, who was given the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal; F.O. Val Poushinsky of Calgary, the bomb aimer; Sergt. Alex. Stephenson from Banffshire, the engineer, and P.O. William Baker, the mid-upper gunner from Surrey, who also got the D.F.C. for that night's work, when they brought their Lancaster Y for Yorker limping back 500 miles to a crash landing. Three Scots, three Canadians and an Englishman – such was the original crew. They had never met until August last, when they were teamed up by fate. And a great team they made.
"He's a rock". Thus Pilot Bill Breckenridge described big red Jack Meek with the sure voice and the steady intelligent eyes. At 35 he was the oldest of the crew, in most cases by a good many years. As a youngster in Vancouver he had been a newspaperman for three years with the Canadian Press. He left this to join the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and served in the Yukon. He was 12 years with the mounted and the B.C. provincial police. He was a Corporal in the provincials at Prince George when he joined the R.C.A.F. in November, 1941.
They were a well-welded crew when that January evening at dusk they took off for their fourth visit to Berlin. "It was a nice evening, not much cloud", said Meek, "a good night for navigating. I got several accurate winds with their direction and strength down to a T. That meant a lot to us. It came in very important later on. We had no trouble getting to out [sic] target. We saw several combats as we came in from the north but we swung in well on time. Remember I'm quoting from memory.
There was plenty of flak and the low clouds were lit up by searchlights. All of a sudden from the rear I saw tracers going past on each side. They seemed to converge as they whizzed past. The odd point I remember was that I could hear them so loudly with our engines going and all that racket. But when they hit the kite there were terrific bangs.
[page break]
- 2 -
Just then we were attacked again from the port rear, maybe by the same Jerry fighter, maybe by another one. That's when I was hit. The kite was pitching around all over the place as Bill tried to shake if [sic] off. I was crouched down behind him doubled up. I thought we had had it and instinctively reached for my parachute.
Things were happening so fast. We could'nt shake the searchlights and flak was coming up, too. It was kind of a madhouse, the terrific noise of cannon shots exploding against the kite. It's all a bit confused to me, and I guess I must have passed out for some minutes for I don't recall other attacks."
Jack Meek had two wounds. One was in his shoulder. The other was caused by shrapnel which went clean through his middle entering at the right side of his back and emerging at the left front just below his chest. It was with such wounds that he carried on and marvellously navigated back to England without instruments. There were four such attacks altogether in those hellish five minutes over Berlin.
The mid-upper gun turret was smashed and Bill Baker wounded on the side of his face by a shot which tore away his helmet and oxygen mask. The rear gun turret was also holed and Joe Schwartz severely wounded by a piece of exploding shrapnel in his foot. Inter-communication with the after end was broken and those forward did'nt know what was happening aft.
The hydraulic system had been shot up; the bomb doors would'nt close nor, as they found later, would the wheels lower. One gas tank was holed. Three rev. indicators and three boost gauges were useless. So were the direction finder and the gyro compass. The elevators and rudders were damaged. Such was the state of their Lancaster that night over Berlin with one of the crew dead and three of the crew wounded when they emerged from their fourth fighter attack and turned homeward through the blasting dark.
When Jack Meek began to remember again they were down to 15,000 feet and "streaking like hell out of Berlin". Bill Breckenridge, unflurried, was flying that damaged kite as on a cross-country hike. "We found Jimmy Hall the wireless operator slumped over his set. He was warm but unconscious, and we didn't know he was dead. We gave him first aid.
"We had scarcely left Berlin when we discovered smoke aft. So Alex. went back and fought that in the fuselage putting it out. Then later on there was another fire when the electrical circuit broke into a blaze. Everyone was suffering from lack of oxygen. As for the controls, some would work and some would'nt.
"There's one thing I am proud of. Everyone did as they had been trained to do. It showed where our discipline and our training came in. Even when we were being attacked and in that jam over Berlin with tracers screaming past and cannon shot hitting us with the crash and sound of sledgehammers and with Bill flinging us about all over the sky, no one panicked. An [sic] no man showed any fear when we saw the mess we were in. Everyone just carried on as he had been taught by the book."
And what did he, Jack Meek, do during all this long run home in such a state to win himself the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal? For the C.G.M. is not handed out lightly. It is a high award in the R.A.F. and only eight warrant officers and sergeants of the R.C.A.F. have won it so far, Jack Meek being the eighth. It was originally instituted by Queen Victoria in 1874 as an award for warrant officers and N.C.O.'s of the Royal Marines. A few years later it was extended to petty officers of the Royal Navy. It was'nt until 1943 that the R.A.F. adopted it as a special award to warrant officers and N.C.O.'s for outstanding operational service. It rates higher than the D.F.M.
[page break]
- 3 -
Yes, what did Jack Meek do to get it? Remember he had a wound in his shoulder and a hole right through his insides from back to front. I asked him to tell me his part. He told me as simply and unaffectedly as if he were giving evidence about someone else, in that same measured objective unaffected impersonal fashion he had told of the whole affair.
"I had very good winds on the way in", he said. "I mean data. I had to go entirely on these in reverse going back, for all our navigating gear was wrecked. Ant [sic] the trouble was I could'nt hold up the sextant, for my left arm would drop down on me and gradually it went helpless altogether. Fortunately this date must have been accurate, for it took us right back to our track. I also took observation of the landmarks I knew". When he saw searchlights or flak over German territory he would say to Bill Breckenridge, "That's Hanover – go so many minutes in such a direction, then bear so much west."
"When I gave him a bearing, he said, "I would try to give him the next one, too. I tried to figure it out quite a bit ahead for I felt I might pass out any minute – I felt a little light in the head – and I did'nt want to leave them in ignorance of our position".
"Could you manage to move?" I asked. "To some degree, he replied, "I could manage to stand up, look out, and tell the skipper what I saw. I bled quite a bit I know, and I guess that's why I was getting light in the head. But there was no time to be worrying about that. It was a case of trying to darn well get back.
"The open bomb doors were quite a drag and we could'nt get speed, but fortunately we were able to get altitude. About two hours after leaving Berlin, I was able to ascertain our exact position by getting a fix and found we were just three miles of [sic] track. That was all, and it gave me a feeling of relief. We were over the Zuider Zee then".
They lacked oxygen and were chilled through in a badly holed aircraft. They hit England right on the nose. "As we came close", Jack continued, "we sent out a distress signal and in less than a minute the searchlights had started to home us. But we could'nt get the wheels down; the air pressure was blown away and they were locked up in position. The pilot and engineer tried everything they knew to get them down, but they would'nt move. So Bill said to me "Tell the boys to prepare for a crash landing."
"Nevertheless, we made a very successful belly-landing. Bill brought her in like a baby. I could feel the plane land on her tail wheel and run forward on that, her nose still up. Then as she slowed, the open bomb doors hit the ground and snapped closed. We sure got out of her fast. We were afraid of fire, we still had a bay full of incendiaries, but none of them went off".
And so they came back home from their dreadful trip, to find themselves in the hands of R.A.F. medicals, and to learn for the first time that Jimmy Hall was dead. The R.A.F. doctor treated Joe Schwartz first as seemingly the worst wounded, and this calm Meek sat and read his medical books. "I became quite interested", he said. "The whole world seemed to have turned upside down and this weemed [sic] to keep me on an even keel".
Then the doctor stood Meek up, helped him strip and was astonished at his severe wounds. With a mirror he showed him where the shrapnel had entered; he could where it had come out. "So you still feel all right?"2 said the doctor. "Yes", said Jack Meek, and passed out.
He woke up in the hospital.
I asked him, "Tell me what were your thoughts when you found yourself in such a jam over Berlin"?. "Your're intent on your job, subconsciously anyway, said Jack Meek. "And you have the common sense to grap [sic] your parachute. You're all set for whatever may happen, but you carry on. What I mean is I have seen

[italics] THE WINGED HORSE'S HEAD in the badge of 35 Squadron commemorates its co-operation with the cavalry in the First World War. Translation of the motto is "We act with one accord." Authority for the badge was given by King Edward VIII in October, 1936. [/italics]
OVER 400 TIMES THEY LED THE WAY
First of the Pathfinders
NIGHT after night they flew eastwards into danger.
Always they were there, ahead of the main bomber group, leading, guiding, indicating.
To them the men of the R.A.F.'s select Pathfinder Force, goes the highest of praise.
Their magnificent work ensured that Bomber Command's all-out efforts during the Second World War were not wasted, that the bombs hit Germany where it hurt most.
Among the most distinguished of the Pathfinder squadrons was No. 35.
With 7, 83 and 156 Squadrons it formed the nucleus of the force in August, 1942. And from then until the end of the war it supplied marking aircraft for no fewer then 425 attacks.
From St. Nazaire to Berlin and from Turin to Hamburg its aircraft clearly and effectively showed the way.
And the outstanding courage of its crews earned over 50 D.S.O.s, D.F.C.s and D.F.M's
But it wasn't only as a Pathfinder squadron that No. 35 gained distinction.
For 18 months before becoming one it had already been [missing letter]itting hard at a great variety of targets, from factories at Manheim to the battleship Tirpit[missing letter] at Trondheim.
It was, in fact, the [missing letters]rst squadron to us Halifaxes. It received them at Leeming, Yorks. on November 20. 1940.
From Madras
[italics] The money for them was [missing letters]vided by people of the Mad[missing letters] Presidency. And in appre[missing letters]tion the squadron has [missing word] been officially known as [missing numbers] (Madras Presidency) Squadron [/italics]
It was the intention of [missing word] Madras Provincial War Com[missing letters]tee to commemorate the gift [missing word] some more permanent to[missing letters] Soon after the war, [missing words] presented the squadron with a writing-table set, comprising an inkstand, blotting-pad and roller-blotter, all of Indian beaten silver and bearing the Madras Presidency arms.
No. 35 also saw much action in the First World War.
It was formed at Thetford, Norfolk, from a nucleus of 9 (Reserve) Squadron, on February 1, 1916.
After a period of training it flew to France on January 25, 1917, as a Corps squadron. Its aircraft were Armstrong Whitworth F.K.8s.
[italics] It was soon in the thick of the fray. Without respite it did sterling work in the Battles of Arras, the Somme, Ypres and Cambrai. [/italics]
Casualties were often heavy, but there was never any sign of faltering.
Advancing with the Army and carrying out a mixed bag of duties, from bombing to laying smoke-screens, it kept up the pace [indecipherable word] up to the Armistice.
Ten-year break
It returned to Britain early in 1919 and was disbanded on June 26 at Netheravon.
When it was re-formed on March 1, 1929, at Bircham Newton, Norfolk, it became a bomber squadron.
At first it received D.H. 9As, but they were soon replaced by Fairey 3Fs. Then in 1933 came Gordons.
In October, 1935, after the Italians had invaded Abyssinia, the squadron was sent to the Middle East. It stayed ten months.
Back home it faced a period of reorganisation. After moving in 1938 from Worthy Down to Cottesmore, it received Battles and Ansons. Then in 1939 came a move to Cranfield.
Quick start
For the first year of the war No. 35's duties were confined to training. But it soon made up for lost time.
Based at Linton-on-Ouse, it struck its first blow at the enemy on March 11, 1941, with a raid on the docks at Le Havre.
Other early targets included Bremen, Essen, Hamburg, Hanover, [indecipherable name], Kiel, Rotterdam, Stettin and Turin.
Several attacks were made on the battleships [italics] Scharnhorst and Gnelsenau [/italics] at Brest.
Among first crew-members to win awards were S/Ldr. J. B. Tait, who gained a bar to his D.S.O., and S/Ldr. T. P. A. Bradley who won a D.S.O. and a bar to his D.F.C. The latter was killed three years later in the Far East.
Early in 1942, before it became a Pathfinder squadron, No. 35 hit continually at vital targets in the Ruhr and other parts of Germany.
A change came on two successive nights in April, when attacks were made on the [italics] Tirpitz [/italics] in Trondheim Fjord.
1,000-bomber raid
[italics] Then on May 30 the squadron took part in the first 1,000-bomber raid on Cologne. [/italics]
First Pathfinder operation was made on August 18 against Flensburg. It was not a success.
The crews quickly gained proficiency, however, and were soon providing an effective spearhead to raid after raid.
In an attack on November 18 on Turin, the C.O., W/Cdr. B. V. Robinson, flew back to base at Gravely with his aircraft on fire.
He was killed the following August during a second spell with the squadron. Then a group captain, he had gained a D.S.O. and a D.F.C. and bar
Almost nightly
An attack on Berlin marked the opening of 1943. Then came raids on U-boat bases at Brest, Lorient and St. Nazaire, followed by almost nightly trips to the Ruhr.
Included in targets during June were the Schneider armament works at Le Creusot.
During that month F/Sgt. N. F. Williams, an Australian rear gunner, became the first member of the squadron to win a C.G.M.
[italics] On a raid on Dusseldorf, though partly paralysed through wounds in his body and legs, he stayed in his turret and shot down two enemy aircraft. [/italics]
He already held a D.F.M. and bar.
In August Nuremburg and Peenemunde were among the targets. Then, as another winter of all-out effort began, strong forces were led to Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover, Kassel, Mannheim, Munich and many other towns.
Another outstanding act of gallantry occurred in December S/Ldr. J. Sale, returning to [indecipherable word] with an aircraft extensively damaged by fire, ordered his crew to bale out.
But when he discovered one member had an unserviceable parachute, he stayed at the controls and brought off a most difficult touch-down.
The following March he crashed in Germany and was seriously wounded.
Conversion
That month No. 35 converted to Lancasters and began blasting pre-invasion targets.
[italics] After D-Day it augmented strategic bombing with tactical operations. It gave close support to our troops at Caen and Falaise and bombed the heavy-gun batteries at Walcheren. [/italics]
Attacks against flying-bomb sites and important store centres also formed part of the programme.
On a raid against Dusseldorf in November, S/Ldr. G. A. Patrick, a veteran of 118 sorties, kept on course even though his navigational aids were useless, and made a faultless bombing run.
No letting up
Operating by both day and night, the squadron kept hard at it right to the end.
Targets hit during the last months of the war included Bonn, Cologne, Goch, Mainz and Potsdam.
Final tasks were dropping food to the Dutch and flying home repatriated prisoners of war.
[italics] In July and August, 1946, No. 35 was honoured by being chosen to carry out the R.A.F.'s first post-war goodwill tour. [/italics]
Today it is still a vital part of Britain's striking force, being equipped with Canberras and based at Marham.
There is no doubt that it can always be counted on to maintain the magnificent pattern of efficiency and devotion to duty set by its gallant wartime crews.
[italics] Most of the information in this article was supplied by Air Force historian [indecipherable words] [/italics]

[inserted] DAILY TELEGRAPH MON. 29/12/1997 [/inserted]
SIR – I was disappointed that your obituary of Professor R. V. Jones (Dec. 20) mentioned only the Lancasters of Bomber Command. At the start of the Second World War the Wellington, Hampden and Blenheim did sterling service. Later the Command became all four-engined with the Sterling, Halifax and Lancaster.
While the Sterling was not a success, valuable work was done by the 6,000-odd Halifaxes, especially the later versions fitted with Hercules engines. Indeed, some Halifax crews loved to cut one engine on return from a raid and then overtake Lancasters while making an appropriate gesture. And while the Lancaster served only with Bomber Command, the more versatile Halifax operated with both Coastal and Transport Commands and dropped supplies and agents in occupied Europe.
Why is it, these days, that only the Lancaster is ever mentioned?

This officer and these airmen were pilot, flight engineer, rear gunner and wireless operator (air) respectively of an aircraft detailed to attack Leipzig one night in February 1944. When nearing the traget [sic] area the aircraft was intercepted by 2 fighters. One of them attacked from close range and the bomber was raked along the whole length of the fuselage by the enemy’s bullets. Four of the crew were wounded, including Sergeants Hall and Wright, the latter being very severely injured. The Aircraft sustained extensive damage, making it impossible for the pilot to take evasive action. Then, to add to the trials of the harassed crew, the bomber became fully illuminated in consequence of a short circuit occurring in the electrical system. The second fighter flew in to the attack but, although forced to operate his turret manually, Sergeant Birch met the attacker with a devastating burst of fire and the enemy aircraft burst into flames and dived to the ground out of control. Only 2 of his guns were now operating but Sergeant Birch used them most effectively and drove off the other attacker. Pilot Officer Catlin then set course for home. Meanwhile Sergeant Hall set to work to repair some of the damaged equipment and later succeeded in making the intercommunication system serviceable. Badly wounded as he was, Sergeant Wright retained consciousness and could not be dissuaded from attempting to fulfil his duties. He was deprived of the use of the instrument panel which has been shot away. while 1 of the petrol tanks was empty. Nevertheless he continued to keep the engines running at their maximum power. In his efforts, Sergeant Wright had to be supported by a comrade and 3 times fainted through loss of blood but he never wavered. In the face of heavy odds, Pilot Officer Catlin reached an airfield where he effected a masterly landing. His skill, courage and determination were beyond praise. Sergeants Wright, Hall and Birch proved themselves to be valiant members of aircraft crew and did everything within their power to assist their pilot in his endeavours to bring the crippled bomber home.

[underlined] Particulars of Meritorious Service [/underlined]
This Non-commissioned Officer has carried out 25 sorties against the enemy, including TEN against Berlin.
On the night of the 19th. February, 1944, he was Flight Engineer in an aircraft detailed to attack Leipsig, [sic] and when over enemy territory and nearing the target, the aircraft was attacked by two enemy fighters. The first attack severely damaged the aircraft and wounded him, as well as the Wireless Operator, Navigator and Mid-Upper Gunner.
Badly wounded as he was, Sergeant Wright retained consciousness and his first thought was to carry on with his duty. His instrument panel was completely shot away and one petrol tank was holed and empty, but despite these difficulties he kept on with his work and succeeded in keeping all the engines running at the maximum power possible.
When the Captain realised how seriously wounded the Flight Engineer was, he tried to dissuade him from working on, but to no avail. He still continued to give the pilot all possible help and although he had to be supported by the Bomb Aimer, he continued to coax the utmost power out of the engines for the long flight home, during which he fainted three times from loss of blood. By his efforts he was materially responsible for the aircraft returning safely.
For his disregard of his wounds and his devotion to duty in the face of danger, this Non-commissioned Officer is recommended for the award of the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal.

Sgt. Wright was severely wounded in the groin causing serious loss of blood and considerable pain. Despite this, he remained at his post for four hours thus saving his aircraft. This conspicuous example of gallantry and refusal to admit defeat fully merits the immediate award of the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal which is most strongly recommended.

CRIPPLED BOMBER, LIGHTS FULL ON, WON DOG-FIGHT
CRIPPLED too badly for evasive action, a bomber with all its lights blazing droned over Leipzig at night. Four of the crew were wounded.
But as a German fighter closed in for the kill, the rear gunner, operating his turret by hand, hit it with a devastating burst of fire that sent it crashing in flames. Later he drove off an attack by a second fighter.
The bomber had been raked along its whole length with bullets and its lights turned on by a short circuit.
Story of the crew’s gallantry was told last night in the latest list of RAF awards.
The pilot, Pilot-Officer James Henry Catlin, of Ware, Herts, gets the D.F.C.; the flight engineer, Sergeant Harry Colin Wright, of Dovercourt, Essex, the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (Flying).
The rear gunner, Sergeant William Birch, of Upholland, Lancs, a peace-time bricklayer, and the wireless operator, Sergeant Thomas Paul Hall, of Letchworth, Herts, receive the D.F.M.
[underlined] Thrice Fainted [/underlined]
Sergeant Hall, one of the wounded, worked on repairs as the bomber flew on, and Sergeant Wright, who was seriously injured kept the engines running though the instrument panel was shot away and one petrol tank was empty.
He had to be supported by a comrade and three times fainted through loss of blood.
The pilot brought the crippled bomber safely home.

Dovercourt R.A.F. Man Gets C.G.M.
SAVED LIVES OF BOMBER CREW
“I want to be quite honest and frank when I say that we all owe our lives to Barry. Although wounded and on the point of collapse he would not leave his post and throughout the attack and all the way home to England he showed the utmost courage and devotion to duty.”
That is the tribute which the pilot of his aircraft pays to Flight-Sergeant Engineer Barry Wright, only son of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Wright, of 64, Lee-road, Dovercourt, who has just been awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal.
The letter from the pilot of the bomber has been received by his parents while Flight-Sergeant Wright himself has received congratulations on his award from Air Marshal Harris, chief of Bomber Command, from his Squadron and from the fellow members of his crew.
Flight-Sergeant Wright, who has now made a satisfactory recovery from his injuries, has only recently passed his twentieth birthday. He is an old scholar of Central School, Dovercourt, and before joining the Royal Air Force, some 18 months ago was employed at Fords Motor Works. He has made 27 operational flights to Germany, more than a third of which have been to Berlin.
In his letter to Flight-Sergeant Wright’s parents the pilot of the bomber says “I feel it my duty on behalf of the members of my crew to write to you and give you some details of Barrie’s injuries and how he received them………… We were detailed to attack a target at Leipzig on this night. The trip across was unevenful [sic] un-
[black and white head and shoulders photograph of Flight Sergeant Wright]
til we reached the outskirts of Berlin where we should have turned south to the target. It was here that we were attacked by two M.E. 110’s and here that your son was wounded in the stomach by shapnel. [sic] We were very badly damaged and three other members of the crew were also wounded one of the gunners seriously, although we did not know it at the time. Our rear gunner destroyed one of the fighters and the other sheered off without firing a shot.”
After referring to the courage and devotion to duty shown by Flight-Sergeant Wright the letter goes on “We as a crew are proud and honoured to have had such a fine, brave lad with us. We are indebted to him for the rest of our lives and we will not forget it………. Thank you again for a wonderful son of whom you have every reason to be proud. We can never forget him.
Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (Flying)
Sgt. B. C. WRIGHT, R.A.F.V.R., No. 166 Sqn. – This officer and these airmen were pilot, flight engineer, rear gunner and wireless operator respectively of an aircraft detailed to attack Leipzig one night in February, 1944. When nearing the target area the aircraft was intercepted by two fighters. One of them attacked from close range and the bomber was raked along the whole length of the fuselage by the enemy’s bullets. Four of the crew were wounded, including Sgts. Hall and Wright, the latter being very severely injured. The aircraft sustained extensive damage, making it impossible for the pilot to take evasive action. Then, to add to the trials of the harassed crew, the bomber became fully illuminated in consequence of a short circuit occurring in the electrical system. The second fighter flew in to the attack, but although forced to operate his turret manually, Sgt. Birch met the attacker with a devastating burst of fire and the enemy aircraft burst into flames and dived to the ground out of control. Only two of his guns were now operating, but Sgt. Birch used them most effectively and drove off the other attacker. P/O. Catlin then set course for home. Meanwhile, Sgt. Hall set to work to repair some of the damaged equipment and later succeeded in making the intercommunication system serviceable. Badly wounded as he was, Sgt. Wright retained consciousness and could not be dissuaded from attempting to fulfil his duties. He was deprived of the use of the instrument panel, which had been shot away, while one of the petrol tanks was empty. Nevertheless, he continued to keep the engines running at their maximum power. In his efforts, Sgt. Wright had to be supported by a comrade and three times fainted through loss of blood, but he never wavered. In the face of heavy odds, P/O. Catlin reached an airfield, where he effected a masterly landing. His skill, courage and determination were beyond praise. Sgts. Wright, Hall and Birch proved themselves to be valiant members of aircraft crew and did everything within their power to assist their pilot in his endeavours to bring the crippled bomber home.

RIDDLED PLANE WON DUEL
BOMBER V. FIGHTER
Riddled by flak, with two engines out of control, and three petrol tanks leaking, a bomber was limping back from Mulheim last month when a German fighter swooped upon it.
All movable equipment, including the mid-upper turret gun and ammunition, had been jettisoned, but while the pilot struggled with the controls the rear gunner shot the attacker down into the sea.
By then the bomber had dropped to 500 feet, but the pilot, by superb airmanship, reached a coastal airfield and crash-landed.
The pilot, Flt.-Sgt. F.E. Mathers, R.A.A.F., a Sydney man, has been awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal, while Sergt. W.F. [missing letters]pedic, the rear-gunner, of Kirk-[missing letters]ldy, and Sgt. G.E. French, the [missing letters]eless operator, of London, each [missing letters]eive the D.F.M.
“REGIMENT [missing word] BOMBERS”
A Halifax [missing words] in, Flt.-Lieut. D.P. P[indecipherable letters] [missing letters]rom Brighton, said, “We arr[missing letters] [missing letters]t the beginning and watched [missing word] bursts of bombs making a continuous pattern.
“There seemed to be a thundering regiment of bombers behind and around us. We could see dozens of them.
“As we turned away the place was filling up with fires, and when we were over the Zuider Zee on the way home, about 150 miles from Duisburg, [missing letter]he rear-gunner could still see the [missing word] blazing.
“I shall never forget all those coloured lights – the explosions, flares and fires. And there was those things we [missing letter]all scarecrows which Jerry seems to be sending up to frighten us. They burst with a dirty red explosion, and then red and green stars pour out. They have often burst near a bomber and done no harm.”
A Stirling pilot, Sergt. R. van Eupen, of Wellington, New Zealand, said that at the time he bombed, towards the end of the

800645 Flight Sergeant Ernest Charles Pryor, A.A.F., No. 77 Squadron, whose home is at Tottenham, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. Born in 1920 at Islington, he was a stock keeper in civil life. He enlisted in 1939 and is now wireless operator/air gunner. During the course of a large number of operation sorties, states the citation, Flt. Sgt. Pryor has consistently displayed courage and devotion to duty of a high order, setting an admirable example to all with whom he came in contact. A wireless operator of exceptional ability, this airman’s work has, at all times, inspired the utmost confidence and has frequently been the subject of the highest praise by his captain.
STETTIN BLAZING

Bombers So Thick That Two Collided
Ten hours after Tuesday nights raids on Stettin and Rostock [missing word] pilot of a reconnaissance aircraft saw huge clouds of smoke o[missing letter]er both towns. Over Stettin a pall of smoke was 15,000 feet in height and was visible from Rostock, 80 miles away.
Many large fires were still burning in Stettin. At Rostock there were at least eight great columns of smoke.
But the raids on Stettin and Rostock were only part of a most-raided night of the war for the Germans from both West and East.
Berlin itself reveals that Tilsit, the important manufacturing and communications centre on the borders of East Prussia and Lithuania, was “heavily” raided. The Berlin correspondent of Aftonbladet says the raid was by Russian planes.
Meanwhile, this is what the R.A.F. was doing:-
BOMBERS
Halifaxes, Lancasters and Stirlings, the four-engined giants, made a “very heavy” attack on Stettin on the Baltic.
Over 150 4,000lb. bombs were dropped in about 40 minutes, as well as tens of thousands of incendiaries and hundreds of other high explosive bombs.
Stirlings alone “heavily bombed” nearby Rostock, home of the Heinkel works, which had three devastating raids in three successive nights a year ago.
A Lancaster captain said there were so many bombers flying to Stettin and Rostock that pilots had to keep a sharp lookout to avoid collisions. His machine hit the fin of a Stirling, but there was only minor damage and both carried on.
Mosquitos went to Berlin, still beflagged for Hitler’s birthday celebrations.
Other bombers laid mines in enemy waters.
From all these activities 31 bombers are missing.
FIGHTERS
Mosquitos, Typhoons, Beaufighters and Whirlwinds took part in one of the largest offensives against enemy transport ever made by Fighter Command.
They attacked trains and barges in various parts of France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, and shipping off the Belgian coast.
All our aircraft returned safely from these many sorties.

[Missing letters]ased by Fighter
[Missing letter]ergeant J. Rank, of South [missing letters]elds, attached to No. 77 squadron, [missing letter]as captain of a bomber also [missing letter]etailed to attack Wupperthal. When [missing letter]earing the target the aircraft was hit by flak, and the damage made it difficult to control.
Then the rear gunner reported the approach of an enemy aircraft, and in most harassing circumstances Sergeant Rank was compelled to take evasive action.
Although pursued he pressed on to Wupperthal and made a successful and determined attack. Photographs showed that his bombs fell on the aiming point.
During the attack the enemy aircraft was evaded and course was set for base, where a difficult landing was made with superb skill. Sergeant Rank displayed high courage and great determination to complete his task successfully.

Wing Commander A.E. Lowe, who has just been awarded the D.F.C., was a corporal in the same bomber squadron five years ago. He is the first air gunner to be given command of a squadron.
