An account of the resource
R Francis’s Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book detailing operations and training flown as Air Gunner covering the period 5 October 1939 to 23 May 1943. He was stationed at RAF West Freugh (4 AOS), RAF Mildenhall (149 Squadron), RAF Warmwell (CGS) and RAF Manby (1 AAS). Aircraft flown in were Heyford, Welllngton, Hampden and Blenheim. He flew 29 night operations and one day operation (total 30) with 149 Squadron. His pilots on operations were Wing Commander Kellett, Squadron Leader Dabinett, Squadron Leader Collett, Squadron Leader Kerr and Pilot officer Davis. Targets were not specified.

He was stationed at RAF Desford (No. 7 Elementary Flying Training School), RAF Grantham (No. 12 Flying Training School), RAF Harwell (No. 15 OTU), RAF Feltwell (75 Squadron), RAF Mildenhall (149 Squadron) and RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Lakenheath (No. 20 OTU). Aircraft in which flown: DH82 Tiger Moth, Anson, Wellington, Magister. Records 3 night operations with 75 Squadron, and 9 night operations with 149 Squadron on the following targets in France and Germany: Bordeaux, Boulogne, Bremen, Dusseldorf, Gelsenkirchen, Hanover, Lorient, Ludwigshafen, Mannheim and Wilhelmshaven. His first or second pilots on operations were Pilot Officer Horton and Pilot Officer Gilmore.

An account of the resource
An air-to-air view of a Lancaster from above flying over a largely rural area. Its bomb doors are open. From information kindly provided by the donor. 'Lancaster Over Target. This has appeared in publications since being lent out in the 1990's but the original negative is in our possession'. The Lancaster is "OJ-A" of 149 Squadron of 3 Group. The twin horizontal yellow bands, unique to 3 Group and denoting a "Gee H" leader are visible on the tailfins.
