Citation:
CARPENTER Ronald Bertram 1291451 Sergeant No: 10 Squadron
London Gazette-14 September 1943 Sorties: 27, Flying Hours 157, Air Bomber,
Air2/8979
Sgt Carpenter was posted to No: 10 Squadron in July 1942 and has now completed
27 sorties, comprising 157 operational hours. He is a member of an outstanding crew
and is a first-class air bomber. On one occasion the aircraft in which he was flying
developed engine trouble over the sea and although flying on three engines, the
target was successfully bombed. His aircraft has been damaged by flak on many
occasions and during an attack on Kiel on 13 October 1942, when the flight
engineer was badly wounded, Sgt Carpenter rendered first aid. He has throughout
his tour shown himself to possess the ideal temperament for operations and his
extraordinary qualities of cheerful confidence has many times proved invaluable
when under fire over the target. His inspiring morale alone made him a very
valuable and appreciated member of his squadron and it would give me very great
pleasure to have him receive a well earned Distinguished Flying Medal.
Remarks by Station Commander:
This NCO has displayed outstanding ability as an air bomber and has inspired great
confidence in the members of his crew he possesses corners and has always shown
exceptional fearlessness in the face of danger. I recommend that his good work be
recognised by the award of the DFM.

'This photograph was taken by Halifax ZA-X BB324 of 10 Squadron. On 21/22 June 1943 it carried out a raid on Krefeld. My dad was the bomb aimer and the photo was taken automatically on bomb release. The aircraft returned safely to base. Dad and the rest of the crew were then stood down for a few days. This aircraft failed to return the following night from Mulheim with a different crew. The pilot was Sgt Pinkerton. A few years ago I got in touch with his nephew in Canada.'

[underlined] EPILOGUE [/underlined]
As recorded in paragraph 59b, F/O Jones and his crew, flying Lancaster PB638(‘O’-Oboe) failed to return from a raid on Stuttgart on 28th Jan. 1945.
Following an attack by a German night-fighter, ‘Oboe’ crashed at Michelbach, Aglasterhausen, (about 12 miles south-east of Heidelberg) with the loss of all lives. The crew were given a christian burial in the local churchyard; they were later re-interred in the Imperial War Graves Cemetery located at Bad Tölz (approx 25 miles due south of Munich). However, an original headstone remains in the churchyard at Michelbach.
Some years after the war, a Michelbach resident, Herr Karl Frauhammer, himself a refugee who had been left severely disabled as a result of war wounds and therefore unable to fully follow his profession of blacksmith, designed and created a war memorial to honour the memory of the dead crew. A large block of sandstone incorporates a piece of the aircraft wreckage and bears a wrought iron motif and commemorative plaque. Standing before the sandstone is a low gateway fo decorative wrought ironwork; inset are seven gilt crosses and a symbolic four-engined aircraft (unfortunately it looks more like a Flying Fortress than a Lancaster - but does not detract from the obvious sincerity of the creator’s intentions). The commemorative plaque, freely translated, reads:-
“On 28th January 1945, a four-engined British bomber aircraft crashed at this spot, killing all seven members of its crew”.
The memorial, which is set alongside a well-known scenic walk in a peaceful woodland on the outskirts of Michelbach, was unveiled on Sunday, 13th Oct. 1074 in a ceremony attended by the British Air Attache, Bonn; the British Consul-General, Stuttgart; the local German Air Force commander; and local dignitaries including the Burgomeister and heads of all community services. Also present were the parents of the crew’s Wireless Operator (F/Sgt John Wilson Milburn) together with contingents representing the RAF, the German Air Force and the Fire Services.
The ceremony did not pass unnoticed. The Daily Telegraph of 14th October 1974 reported:-
“In an unusual, or even unique ceremony, a small German village paid tribute to the memory of seven British airmen of No. 153 Squadron, who died there in 1945”.
Similar reports appeared in various British and German provincial papers, and in RAF News.
[underlined] ACKNOWLEDGEMENT [/underlined]
The foregoing information was provided by Phillip Jenkinson - brother of the crew’s Flight Engineer, F/Sgt Peter Jenkinson, DFM. Phillip was himself a Halifax mid-upper gunner with No. 10 Squadron, when shot down in 1943; his pilot and rear gunner were killed - the rest survived.
(By an amazing coincidence, although he died 300 miles away and some 18 months later, Peter’s final grave at Durnbach lies directly alongside those of Phillip’s old crew-mates).

MODEL MEMORIES OF AIR BATTLE
Two Number 10 Squadron Second World War airman have been reunited with their aircraft - 54 years after it was shot down over Germany.
Pilot Officer Kevin Murphy of St. Albans, and Seargent [sic] Philip Jenkinson of Shebbear, Devon, met up recently to admire a unique model of their Halifax bomber made from the wreckage of their aircraft, shot down by a night fighter during a raid on Munich on 6/7 September 1943.
Kevin Murphy the navigator and Philip Jenkinson the mid upper gunner were among the five survivors who managed to parachute from the burning plane.
Kevin was first to bail out and landed between a barbed wire fence and a house. He could not bury his parachute as instructed because it was snagged on the fence. Suddenly someone appeared and said “for you the war is over!”
Philip escaped capture a little longer and made his way towards the Swiss border but he was caught nine days later at Immenstadt.
Philip returned home shortly before victory after being released by the Desert Rats. Kevin followed after the Germans capitulated.
In 1951, the two friends returned to Germany to search for their aircraft’s crash place, but were unsuccessful, due mainly to un co-operative locals! After contacting German Air Historian, Hans Grimminger of Augsberg in 1983, Philip was introduced to the site of the crash and to very friendly local people. During numerous holidays in the area he collected many small pieces of his aircraft and earlier this year decided to melt down some of these pieces, make a mould of a Halifax and have a replica cast. As far as Philip knows, this is unique, and he just had to visit Kevin to show him the aircraft and reminisce about their experiences.

Philip Jenkinson RA F No 1316403 - German POW No 507 MID UPPER GUNNER OF HALIFAX JD 166 ZA-G No 10 Squadron Bomber Command Night of 6th September 1943 We were detailed to bomb Munich. This was the very first night that the whole of the bomber force - 404. 4 - engined bombers -- Lancasters and Halifaxes were routed directly over London at 5000 feet. The trip was fairly uneventful for about 4 'l4 hours, apart from the usual searchlights and odd burst of flak. and occasional sightings of other bombers en route, when the rear- gunner Sgt, O'Kill suddenly shouted" fighter coming in from astern." It was not heard on Monica. Monica was an early warning radar device. The pilot FIt. Lt. Douglas immediately corkscrewed the Hali fax. The fighter, an ME 109 fired its guns, but missed us and then dived below. ft then resumed the attack from almost the same position. It came in again and this time the rear gunner fired at it, but it was too low for me to get on to it. The fighter fired again, but missed. It was lost to sight. We were all fully alert, when it suddenly came again and opened up on us at very dose range, its shells and bullets (tracer), passing just a few feet above us. We were diving and the ME 1 09 went over the top of us only a few yards away. Both gunners aimed their guns at it from fairly close range. I continued firing at it after the rear gunner lost it, as it was over the top of us. It rolled over and fell away into the darkness. The last I saw, was something white stream away from it. it looked like a puff of white smoke in the dark, but must have been a parachute. Mv researcher in Germany, H. Grimminaer, has found that • ' this ME 1 09 crashed at Memming, the pilot baling out. This all tied up with the information of timing and position that I gave him. The navigator, P/O Murphy was logging this action, when our Halifax was hit by a JU88 nightfighter. It came up from underneath. Our aircraft was set on fire immediately. I gave the enemy aircraft a long burst from the mid-upper turret as it was pulling away from starboard. H. Grimminger, air-war historian, has found that the JU88 was damaged and one of the crew was killed by the return fire from the Halifax. The pilot asked the extent of the damage; I said "the top of the starboard side of the rear turret had gone". He then called the rear gunner over the intercom, but there was no reply. I then reported a fire in the starboard inner engine and wing was getting larger, with flames now coming into the fuselage. The captain ordered the bombs to be jettisoned. The FIt. Engineer Sgt. Gurton called out that the wires and cables to the starboard wing had been cut. The fire was spreading very rapidly. I could feel the heat now in the mid upper turret from the burning incendiary bombs and petrol. The Captain ordered the crew to abandon the aircraft. I asked in should go back and see if the rear-gunner was alright: but he said "no" and "get out". I got out of the turret, picked up my parachute, which was in the comer by the main spar, clipped it on and made my way to the rear of the aircraft to the mid-upper gunners escape door. The flames from the fire gave enough light through the holes in the fuselage to sec the way over the bomb bay door, down the steps to the aircraft floor. I could see the door and opened it easily. That was the last I remember of being in the aircraft. I do not remember leaving the aircraft or pulling the parachute rip cord handle. The next memory is swinging on the parachute and seeing as I swung around, four other parachutes. did not see the burning aircraft, or see it crash.
[page break] [words missing] an eye witnesses have told me, that it circled the area five or six times before it finally [words missing]up where it did. They said it was well ablaze and making a lot of noise, which really [words missing] them, as they did not know where it was going to crash, as crash they knew it would.
The ground seemed to be coming up to meet me and I remember seeing a lot of water and drifting over it. It was either a large river or lakes. Just before] hit the ground, I saw a parachute ahead of me not too far away. I landed in a large field, which had been harvested, near a forest. I lay on the ground for a few minutes to get over the bump! and was glad to discover I was still in one piece! I gathered up my parachute and went to the edge of the forest and covered it over to hide it. Before doing this, I tore a piece out as a souvenir, which I still have, by telling the Germans that it was my handkerchief. Then I went in the direction of where I had seen the other parachute come down. Calling out, got a reply, then met up with the bomb-aimer. We took his parachute to the forest and buried it as well. We then walked across the field and came to a small road, where we followed it, then came to a 'T' junction with one direction marked Weiden, not knowing at the time this was 21/2 miles from where the Halifax crashed.
At the same junction, there were some houses. On one, I can remember a large advertising sign 'coca-cola'. From another house we heard voices, so we turned around and returned to the field and forest, where we walked south until daylight and hid there until dark. I had my escape compass and map, but on the map we could not find 'Welden', but we knew we were somewhere south of Augsburg or Ulm.
We headed south at night and hid in the forest by day. After about three days we came to a railway, then followed it southwards, but the weather was getting very wet, but at least we were able to get a drink from the puddles on the road. We had nowhere to go to get dry and the going was getting harder. We dumped our heavy wet flying gear to make the walking easier. We walked around the villages to avoid capture. It was very scary when approaching houses as most of them had dogs and from the sound of them, of the larger variety. A couple of times we heard German people talking and walking towards us. We just sunk into the side of the road and they passed by.
After a week, we walked into a place which we decided was quite large, so the plan was to risk being caught to find out exactly where we were. We walked right into a railway station and found the place was called Kempton, There were a few people about and it was very dark, so it was quite easy to hide in the shadows and watch what was going on. Once we did think of trying to get into a railway truck, then thought we would be worse off as we did not know where it was going. Whilst hiding on Kernpton railway station we heard a lot of talking and laughing coming from a nearby hut. We did not understand a word that was said, but realised that it was some sort of canteen where the railway workers were having something to eat, which made us feel more hungry, as we were very short of food.
[page break]
[missing words]we were so short of food was that the bomb-aimer did not have his emergency or escape kit with him, consequently I had to share mine with him. After a short while, the workers left the hut, leaving a small light on. They were quite noisy and easy to dodge as I suppose they did not realise they were being watched! After watching for a while and with no-one about, I slipped in to the hut and went through a few bags and found some dry brown bread and a piece of large sausage, the size of which I had never seen before, but at least it was food.
We retreated from Kempton by the same track and proceeded as usual to walk clockwise around until we picked up the railway again. This took us all night and as it was getting light we heard a train, and then there was a dense bit of woodland and a small stream, so we could hide and get some water to drink. Water was sometimes more of a problem than food. Now we knew 'where we were, we could study the silk map I had and found Kempton quite easily on it. At last we knew exactly where we were, but did not know where we had come from! We shared the bread and sausage, but there was onion in it, which I do not like, but was glad to eat it. The idea then was to make for Switzerland. Where we were hiding, there were a few empty apple trees, but we did find about half a dozen on the ground, which all helped.
The bomb-aimer had had enough by this time and wanted to give himself up, but I was afraid that if he did the Germans would soon find me and from the map, Switzerland was not very far, so I persuaded him to stay and continue for a little longer. The next night was very wet and we did not make much progress; our feet were getting very sore and swollen with walking in wet suede flying boots. We were generally very uncomfortable, nothing to shave with and not even a comb between us; but still kept going, but more slowly. The next night we reached Immenstadt. We decided to walk through the place, as going around looked impossible with mountains everywhere. We were nearly through as we waited until it was quiet, when suddenly from behind a house on the corner, a couple of German Soldiers appeared; they shone a torch on us. We could not understand what they were saying, but from their gestures it was obvious we had to go with them. We ended up at the police station where we were searched and put into a cell. We were given some food and hot drinks and a dry bed to lie on, which was most welcome after nine days without. After being captured, I never associated or spoke to the bomb-aimer again, as I still feel he let me and the RAF down very badly, by not carrying his emergency rations or escape kit.
The soldiers and police took our watches and my compass. The lady interpreter had my silk maps. We were kept at Immenstadt for a couple of days and were certain most of the villagers came to have a look at us through the peep-hole in the door. With two armed guards, we were taken in the back of a lorry to Kempton. The lorry was powered by a wood-burning gas producer. From Kempton, we went by train to the interrogation centre Dulagluft, near Frankfurt. From Frankfurt we were sent to a prisoner of war camp right up in the Baltic coast of East Prussia It was Stalagluft 6 Heydekrug; it was a camp for RAF NCO Air-crew.
In October 1943, 8 prisoners were called out of our huts and taken to the guard room, where we realized that we all had one thing in common, we were all survivors of the Munich raid. We were told that by orders of the German High Command, we were all to be taken to Munich and shown the damage we had done, by the attack on the city and then all be shot, which is not a very nice feeling, but being outnumbered by guards with guns, there was nothing that could be done about the situation we found ourselves in. The train journey to Munich took 2 days. We
[page break]
[were]taken to an airfield near Munich and greeted by other survivors from 2 other POW camps, [missing words] a total of 31 RAF air-crew survivors from 2 bombing raids on Munich, 6th/ 7th September and 2nd /3rd October. After being paraded twice around Munich by bus with even armed guards sitting on the roof, we were taken to the opera house where the head of the German Air Force, Hermann Goering was supposed to address us. After waiting some considerable time, he failed to turn up and much to our relief an Officer announced that we were to be taken back to our POW camps. I could never find out why this was done to us, nor have I ever heard of this happening to any other air-crew survivors from bombing raids on German cities. I have done extensive research in England and Germany, but have found no official records.
When the Russians advanced in the summer of 1944, we were moved to Thorn, Poland Stalag 357. It was mainly a mixed nationality camp. We were not there long, as the Russian advance continued. The Germans moved us out by marching in a very long column and then to a railway station, where we were loaded into cattle trucks; just about standing room only. There was straw on the floor, to lie on if room could be made. The armed guards were in the middle protected by a barbed wire barrier. There were no toilet facilities for us, but the train did stop quite often and those in need were allowed out under guards with bayonets fixed. All the food we had was watery soup and dry bread. After a few days we arrived at Stalag 355 Fallingbostel north of Hanover. This was a very large camp. I was lucky, as I was put into a hut whilst others were in large tents, which was very cold in the winter.
In the spring of 1945, we knew the British were advancing by the secret radio that was in the camp. On the 11th April, the Germans marched us out and in a north easterly direction. We then got caught between the retreating Germans and the advancing British. All hell was let loose, with bombing and shell fire, we were caught with nowhere to go except the woods, as the Germans just left us to our fate and they were gone. After a couple of days of heavy fighting there was no sleep and no food. There was a terrific amount of noise from gun carriers and tanks. A few of us hid in a shell hole or bomb crater with fir tree branches put on top. Early on the morning of the 17th April, a very large tank stopped right by our hideout, and opened fire which was deafening. When it stopped firing we an got out of the hole. The tank commander made us put our hands up, but when he realised we were British POW's we were given food and drink, cigarettes for the ones who smoked and some clothes as we were cold and frightened. A Corporal gave me his jacket, and before I handed it in I removed the Desert Rats Badge as a souvenir, which I still have.
Our position was marked on the map by the tank crew, and we were told to stay where we were and we would be picked up later in the day, which we were and then taken back to the prison camp, which was now occupied by the British Army and looked after very well. We had a nice warm shower and a razor to have a shave, which I still use till this day. After a few days we were taken to an Army Camp, smartened up in Army Private uniforms and flown back to England in a transport Dakota, 36 standing up, holding the sides. Back in England the RAF changed our uniforms and issued appropriate ranks and badges and we were sent on leave, arriving home on the 27th April 1945. The Germans, right up to the end, wanted to keep the RAF Prisoners, as they were sure they were going to win the war and we were used as forced labour to rebuild the bombed cities.

No. 184 7/97 (July)
[underlined] WARTIME HALIFAX OPERATIONS - Philip Jenkinson. [/underlined]
We were pleased to welcome Philip Jenkinson to our July meeting and learn of his remarkable experiences in Bomber Command as the mid-upper gunner in a Halifax. As the story unravelled we could be excused into thinking new ere watching a TV documentary similar to “One of our aircraft is no longer missing”, such was the meticulous research carried out.
In 1942 when 17 years old, Philip gave up his job of working on a farm at Constantine and reported to the Falmouth Recruiting centre, opting for service in the RAF. At first he was sent to Trebelzue where he was able to gain useful air experience in a number of aircraft types. The next move was to Bridlington ITW and then for aircrew trains to Canada. He was to have sailed on the Queen Mary but that ship’s altercation with a cruiser, hushed up at the time, resulted in a dangerous 19 day trip on a banana boat. After successful completion of the course at McDonald airbase in Manitoba, Philip returned to England and joined a Heavy Conversion Unit (HCU) flying Whitleys. By the summer of 1943 he had graduated to the Halifax and joined 10 Squadron at Melbourne, Yorkshire.
Over the next two months Philip took part in a series of raids including one of 11hr 40min to Italy. Other targets included Hamburg and Mannheim, but things did not go too well on his tenth trip to Munich when night fighters were encountered. Before the target was reached a Messerschmitt Bf 109 attacked and on the third pass was shot down. However revenge was at hand in the form of a Ju 88 which attacked from behind and below and ripped the Halifax apart with cannon shells, setting it on fire. The rear gunner was killed but 4 other crew members managed to bail out before the Halifax blew up. Philip found himself floating down towards the woods and lakes in an area some 100 miles SW of Munich.
Once on the ground Philip made contact with the bomb-aimer who was not a regular crew-member and not as well prepared as Philip for this contingency. Parachutes were buried and plans made to escape towards the southern border of Germany. Philip had to share his escape kit which would normally last a week with his colleague. During the day they would lie low and even at night villages and farmhouses were to be avoided. Directions were established by picking up the main railway line from Munich, through Landsberg towards Kempton in a general SW direction. Food was becoming a problem and receiving a railway worker of his snack found in a hut did little to alleviate the pangs of hunger. After 9 days when creeping through Immenstadt at the dead of night they were recaptured by an armed German guard, given food and put in the cells for the night. The next move was to Dulag Luft in Frankfurt for interrogation and thence to Stalag Luft VI in East Prussia.
Clearly the Munich raid had upset Goering who had the survivors taken back for an unprecedented tour of the city showing the devastation caused to historic buildings, hospitals and churches, but the aircrew were not too upset! Goering was to address the crews in the Opera House but fate intervened as he was waylaid by the escape from Sagan of 50 British Officers whom he ordered to be shot. One wonders what plans he had for the Munich rain survivors, but the event had never been documented by either side.
Philip was then returned to his prison camp on the Russian border but as the war progressed the Russians were approaching and the prisoners were next moved to Thorn in Poland and eventually taken in cattle trucks to a camp north of Hanover. Finally the Allied armies were closing in with bombing and shelling being carried out in the vicinity. Liberation came as the Desert Rats moved in with their tanks on April 17th 1945. The RAF prisoners were all kitted out as Army privates and on 27th April flown back to Cosford in a Dakota. The passengers, 18 on each side holding on to a rail, were pleased to be back. RAF uniform with all relevant badges was supplied and 3 weeks leave granted. Although he could have been released, Philip was passed fit for flying and expected to be on Lincolns destined for the Far East. With the end of hostilities, he converted

[inserted] L- [/inserted] Philip Jenkinson
Eulogy
Philips Early Life
1937 At 14 he worked on a poultry farm near where they lived at Constantine, Cornwall
1940 He joined the LDV (Home Guard)
1941 He volunteered for Aircrew and trained as an Air Gunner, Some of his training was done in Canada. Eventually he joined No. 10 Squadron as a mid upper gunner on Halifax Aircraft.
August 1943. I first met Philip when he was on leave following 7 Operations over Germany.
29th August he returned to his Squadron (I started my RAF training to become a Pilot).
On the night of 6/7th September Philip was shot down during a raid on Munich, his aircraft on fire, Philip and 5 crew members escaped by parachute (the pilot and rear gunner both went down with the aircraft)
Philip and his Bomb Aimer both landed in the same field, buried their parachutes and started to walk due west towards Switzerland. After 9 nights walking, with very little food they came to a town, not far from the Swiss border but were captured by German soldiers and remained Prisoners of war until the 29th April 1945 when they were released by the Desert Rats and flown home.
Philip had been posted as missing on the 7th september [sic] 1943 and it was then that his mother was on the way to Falmouth on the bus, to shop. Also on the bus was the local Policeman who came
[page break]
up to Mrs Jenkinson (whom he called “Mrs Pickles; the family nick name for Philip) and said “Sorry to hear Pickles is missing, don't worry Mrs Pickles, the Germans wont catch him, I never could!
I returned home from Southern Rhodesia where I had been doing my flying training.
Philip met me and invited me home to dinner. That is when I met his little sister, Evelyn whom I married in 1948. Philip was Best Man at our wedding.
At one time Philip and I served on the same Squadron (511) where we flew transport aircraft to India, Philip as Loadmaster, me as second pilot. Philips aircraft went down as far as Singapore mine went up to Delhi.
In 1947 Philip came out of the RAF and went to manage a poultry farm, I think owned by A G Street a famous broadcaster on farming matters. Philip had married his first wife Norah in september 1947. Unfortunately that marriage was not a success but they had a son, David, who is here today.
By 1956 he had met and married Jean – to cut a long stoty [sic] short Philip And Jean moved to Alscott Farm here at Shebbear. For the first five year at Alscott my wife and I were in partnership with Philip, but then it was decided that we would go on our own way and Evelyn and I returned to farm in Cornwall.
Philip and I always remained good friends, and of course we will miss him terribly.
[page break]
Some of you will know our German friends who owned the farm on which Philip landed by parachute. It was in 1983 that we read in the RAF News that the Germans had built a Memorial to a British Crew shot down in January 1945. This so happened to be Philips elder brothers crew – It was built as a bridge of friendship between the British and German people. In 1983 we decided to go to Germany to see this memorial, this we did.
We were put in touch with A German Air Historian Who invited us to stay with him.
It was he who took us to the farm on which Philips aircraft had crashed.
This was the start of a very close friendship with the German family at the farm where we go to stay year after year.
Just before we left home yesterday we received a telephone call from our German friends to say that they would hold a memorial service for Philip at the little church
which had been badly damaged by bombs jetisonned [sic] by Philips aircraft.
What wonderful friends these German people have been.
