Maria Domanovszky (b. 1937) recounts how she threw herself into a swampy ditch when under fire and how she lay down praying and hoping to get back home safely. Describes German soldiers with torn and dirty uniforms escaping from a burning forest. Tells memories of the first encounter with black American soldiers: they were friendly, looked well-dressed and threw chocolate to a crowd of village children. When the adults standing nearby realised that the soldiers were no cause of alarm, they asked for chocolate as well.

Irma Ferranti recalls a day when there were four bombings on Turin. She gives a complete account of the last one: how she ran through the street in search of shelter, before trying to take cover under a bridge. She goes on to remember the sound of shop windows shattering, the roar of the engines, and the ground shaking. She recalls her fear during her rush to the bakery, where her mother worked, and her conviction that her mother must be dead. Irma describes the moment that she found her mother and how she felt at the time. She describes her memory of scent of fresh bread inside the bakery, her guilt for some of the things she had said and the emotional catharsis she felt having cried and was then at peace within herself..

Eraldo Bessone (b. 1925) remembers the bombing of the Borgo San Paolo neighbourhood in Turin, and how, due to the extensive damage it suffered, people started calling it the 'Stalingrad neighbourhood'. He also describes how the extensive damage led to an evacuation. He goes on to recall the daily trip from Turin to a village thirty kilometres outside the city, where he and his family stayed each night.

Paola Bianchi (b. 1938) recalls daily life in wartime Tuscany. She describes Rosalinda, a strict midwife, and recounts how people used to take refuge in shelters. She also gives an account of how, during the evacuation to Arezzo, they rushed to take shelter in the nearest ditch at night. Paola also remembers her father’s decision to return to Florence and his subsequent attempts to get food on the black market.

Piercarlo Debernardi (b. 1928) describes how his father built the family home next to the convent of La Visitazione in Turin, a house now considered a landmark in the city. He gives an account of wartime building regulations, stressing the prohibition against using iron. He also highlights the fact that the Fascist regime made air-raid shelters compulsory for new buildings and how his father obtained the materials he needed for construction. Piercarlo talks about how quite a few people survived bombings because of the shelter and explains that his house was bombed because it was under the landing approach to the Campo Volo airfield.

Carlo Gasparini (b. 1930) talks about his memories of the bombing raids on Milan. He provides an account of a night bombing with many flares that illuminated the sky as if it were day. He also describes the rush to safety during another bombing, and how inside the shelter he was forced against the wall. Carlo also recounts his memory of frightened horses escaping from their fenced enclosure, and his fear for his relatives lives because his home had been bombed.

Mirco Marelli describes a bombing raid on the factory where he used to work in 1941: when the alarm sounded, bombs started falling but he was too far from any of the shelters so he took cover under a staircase with a friend. He highlights how shocking it was to see streets full of collapsed and burning buildings, and describes the sight of Milan burning. He also, remembers that some of his relatives were killed by a bomb, whilst they were running to the air-raid shelter. Mirco also recalls when during hospitalisation, he experienced the bombing of the Ospedale Maggiore, in which his overriding impressions were the fear of patients and nurses and how they reacted to the raid.

Giovanni Monchiero (b. 1923) gives a detailed account of his experience in labour camps in Germany: he started working at a train station but it was bombed, then he moved to the Opel garage but it was also bombed. He also describes an occasion when, during a bombing, he shared the shelter with Russian prisoners - men, women and children. Giovanni talks about the shock of seeing a bottle of milk shatter in front of him because of a change in pressure. He also recollects that he was finally moved to a civilian camp near Ludwigshafen and Mannheim.

Mariannina Di Palma (b. 1925) recalls the rush to safety when the air-raid siren sounded. She recalls that on one occasion she still had a dish cloth in her hand when she got to the shelter. Mariannina also remembers that her mother used to take shelter under an archway and that the door behind her used to shake from the shock of the explosions.

Maria Grazia Camperi (b. 1923) recalls how people used to take shelter in railway tunnels, standing on narrow walkways along the track. She stresses how dangerous this was and recalls the sight of people being killed or mutilated by passing trains. She considers that she could cope with those moments only because she was still young and was hoping for a better future.

Interview with Silvano Scarnicchia
Silvano Scarnicchia (b. 1925) recalls his first assignment as a soldier, when he was posted to an anti-aircraft battery defending a bridge in Piacenza. He also recalls a lunch with high-ranking German officers, especially the wartime dessert made of a potato topped with sugar and cinnamon, and singing “Rosamunda” (a popular song) together. Silvano describes his journey to Brescia on a lorry fitted with a wood gas generator. He also mentions how his commanders sent him on several operations because they knew he would not desert.

Matteo Basso (b. 1934) recalls his diet during the war: at school for breakfast, he used to eat a slice of polenta and two figs. He also talks about his experience in being caught out in the open when a formation of aircraft dropped bombs close to the school, and how he had to take shelter in a ditch. Matteo also remembers how, after the attack, he went to a field to pick up copper shell cases to sell.

A fire is raging on the deck of the Espero. Explosions send large amounts of water shooting up into the sky. A second vessel, engulfed in flames and smoke, is visible in the background.

I colpi si infittivano a dritta, e a mancina del caccia, a prora e a poppa. Un colpo arrivò sul deposito di munizioni a poppa, trà fumo e fiamme si videro balzare fuori i marina ustionati, un grido di allarme “si imbarca acqua”, i cannonieri dell‘Espero continuarono ad abbassare l’alzo nel tiro.
Quattrordicimila metri, tredicimila metri, diecimila, ottomila, un‘altro colpo giunse, e con immenso fragore, fece scoppiare una caldaia. La nave ormai era sbandata: vibrava, fumava, dava gli ultimi aneliti di disperazione…”
Caption translates as: “ (2)… The order was heard: ‘Battle stations!’, the British fire was intense and accurate; the Espero fired back at eighteen thousand elevation, a bold act of defiance. Fire intensified, port and starboard, bow and stern. One of the shots hit the aft magazine, we saw the burnt sailors running for their lives among smoke and flames; a cry of alarm: ‘inrush of water”, Espero gunners kept reducing the elevation; fourteen thousand metres, thirteen thousand metres, ten thousand, eight thousand, another shot hit the vessel making one of the boilers explode. The vessel was now listing: it vibrated, billowed out smoke, drew its last dying breath in despair...”

A Royal Navy vessel exchanges salvos with an enemy ship in the distance. Both are engulfed in flames and plumes of smoke. Shells are exploding in the water near both vessels.
Label reads “9”; signed by the author; caption reads “(3) … Ed ecco un colpo partito a dritta andare a segno: l’incrociatore inglese navigava in testa alla formazione, ricevette una scossa formidbile, è una fiamma balenò sul suo fianco sinistro, la grossa nave sbandò mandando fumo nerissimo…”
Caption translates as: “(3)… there, a salvo launched from starboard hit the vessel: the British cruiser, in the forefront of the line-up, suffered tremendous damage and a fire flashed port side. The large vessel tilted, belching out black smoke.”

The destroyer Espero is sinking rapidly in a rough sea. Its stern is raised high into the air, exposing the rudder and propeller, whilst the bow is already submerged. Flames and smoke are engulfing the bridge. A lifeboat with survivors is visible on the left.

Caption translates as: “(4)… The seriously damaged Espero listed heavily. Its tragedy, soon to become legendary in the tales of war castaways, begins. Only six men survived the tragedy to retell it…"

World War (1939-1945)
The badly damaged operations room of destroyer Espero, with a gaping hole in the ship's side and pieces of machinery engulfed in smoke. Five men are visible in total, three officers dressed in white uniforms and two seamen in blue with red stripes and with an emblem on the sleeve of their right arms. All three officers and one soldier appear to be dead whilst the remaining soldier looks on.
Label reads “11”; signed by the author; caption reads “(5) … uno di essi LO MASTRO, 2o capocannoniere racconta: dal deposito non ci arrivavano più munizioni consumammo tutti i colpi della riservetta, telefonai al direttore di tiro, nessuno rispondeva, aiutante e direttore morti, la nave era quasi ferma, e gli inglesi ormai a meno di 6000 metri sparavano ancora; scesi in sala nautica, gli ufficiali di rotta e segnalazione tutti morti, giacevano al suolo coperti di sangue, contornati da scheggie e da rottami di strumenti…”
Caption translates as: “(5)… one of them, Second Chief Gunner Lo Mastro, reports: “ammunition was not delivered from the magazine, we used up the small deck storage, I rang the firing director, but no one answered. The directors and his assistants were dead, the vessel almost still; the British were less than six thousand metres away, still firing. I went down to the operations room; the navigator, officers and signalling officers were all lying on the floor covered in blood, surrounded by splinters and parts of instruments. They were dead.”
