FIRST NIGHT OF THE PROMS Recording of Friday’s opening concert, Berlioz’s Requiem, conducted by Colin Davis. (Sat. B B C 1, 9.20)
A SAD ex-airman who spent his nights dressing salads in a cafe and his days playing Glenn Miller records in a Pimlico basement gave producer David Naden the idea for [italics] If I Don’t Come Back – Have A Drink On Me [/italics] (ITV Tuesday).
He set off to trace the seven-man crew of a war-time Lancaster bomber, and when all official channels failed he found them. By accident.
He reunited them on their old airfield in Lincoln, and the RAF produced another Lanc. The result: Air pictures, war talk and, of course, some old bomber-raid film. Just the stuff to set the oldies talking. But it could, I fear, fall flat with the youngsters.

They did come back
TELEVISION date to remember this month is Tuesday, July 15 at 10.30 p.m. on all ITV networks. The programme is a 50 minute documentary called “If I don’t come back, have a drink on me.”
It was made by Granada at Waddington to film the only operational Lancaster bomber left in the world, B for Betty, and the first complete crew reunion of O for Oboe since they last flew together 25 years ago, having completed a full tour of 30 bombing missions.
One member of the crew, Sgt Stan Attwood, is still in the RAF. But see the documentary for yourself on July 15.

The last Lancaster: Granada’s “If I Don’t Come Back – Have a Drink on Me,” which is networked on Tuesday, is the story of the men who flew O for Oboe during the war. Oboe was later shot down, and the plane used in the programme is actually B for Bertie, the last surviving Lancaster at R.A.F. Waddington, Lincolnshire.

10.30 IF I DON’T COME BACK – HAVE A DRINK ON ME
During the last war a bomber crew had some 5 per cent chance of surviving a tour of 30 operations intact. One crew which did was pilot Les Creed’s: Ross Elder, Don Groscop, Len Hogben, Claude Horn, Stan Attwood and Rilwyn Evans, and, of course, Flying Officer Creed, then aged 21, and skipper of Lancaster O for Oboe.
In tonight’s documentary, with a D.F.C. and three D.F.M.’s between them, they are reunited at R.A.F. Waddington, Lincolnshire, to look back 25 years.
On reflection, they considered themselves “pretty average – nobody walked out on the wing to put a fire out,” but nevertheless, the work, experiences and relationships of that short, intense period of mutual danger and mutual trust has remained with them, much of it in contrast to what they are doing today : storeman, purchasing executive, company director, works manager, washing machine mechanic, police sergeant – and in one case, R.A.F. stores [deleted] corporal. [/deleted] [inserted] Sergeant! [/inserted]
How far has their wartime comradeship and valour “gone for a Burton”?

THE LANCASTER HEROES GET TOGETHER AGAIN
The chances of an entire RAF wartime bomber crew surviving a tour of operations were 20-1 against. One crew which did survive was reunited by Tuesday’s documentary [italics] If I Don’t Come Back, Have A Drink On Me [/italics]. And at Waddington RAF Station in Lincolnshire, they met another old friend – a Lancaster bomber
TWENTY-FIVE years is a long time. As the train from London headed north towards Lincoln, Ross Elder, storeman at a cement works near Leighton Buzzard, thought : “I seem to know that fellow.”
Don Groscop, purchasing executive with a motor company, thought: “I know I’ve seen him before, but where was it?” On the tarmac at Waddington RAF Station, the two men came face to face again. And then they remembered.
Victor and Vulcan bombers tore down the runway with an ear-splitting crescendo of sound. When their heads were cleared of the noise they looked across to one of the airfield’s dispersal points and there, its four Merlin engines silent, they saw it – the Lancaster, the RAF’s most effective night bomber in World War II.
Though the Lancaster in Tuesday’s programme has never flown in anger, its letters, KM-B, are those of one of the most famous Lancasters that ever flew from Waddington on a bombing mission. Its pilot, Sq. Ldr. John Nettleton, won the Victoria Cross.
In the winter and spring of 1944 a Lancaster with the call sign O for Oboe brought Elder and Groscop closer together than either had been to another man in his young life – except the other five men in the aircraft.
While Groscop, working at his charts, provided the only light in the bomber’s darkened fuselage, Elder, in the mid-upper gun turret, scanned the sky for German night fighters.
After their tour of duty, Flying Officer Les Creed (pilot) was awarded the D.F.C. Flt. Sgt. Len Hogben (bomb-aimer) and Sgt. Groscop and Sgt. Claude Horn (wireless operator) received the D.F.M.
Twenty-five years is a long time, and now many things have changed. Bomb-aimer Hogben only gave instructions to skipper Creed when the Lancaster was making its run in to the target. Now Hogben is boss of a firm which makes tinplate containers, and Creed is his works manager.
Horn services washing machines. Flight Engineer Stan Attwood tried civilian life. For seven years he worked in hospital management in Nottingham, but got fed up. In 1954 he rejoined the RAF and went to Singapore as stores corporal.
Rear-gunner Irlwyn Evans, now a police sergeant at Aberystwyth, stood by the rear turret of the grounded Lancaster at Waddington and looked at the turret through which he pointed his four Browning 303s.
The reunion had an acute moment of frustration when, with Waddington commanding officer Group Captain Arthur Griffiths at the controls, the Lancaster took off and made several low runs across the airfield.
Creed felt he could have done the job himself. And Hogben added: “And he could, too. And what’s more, if he did we’d all go with him.”

MOON MEN’S TEARS
[underlined] TELEVISION ROSEMARY SAY [/underlined]
WHATEVER doubts one may or may not have about te ethics of the moon venture, it is essential to understand something about the technical side of the business.
I hope it has not escaped the notice of those who are as hopelessly unscientific as I am that two of the B.B.C.’s “Apollo Space” studio team, James Burke and Patrick Moore, have been allotted time off from their progress reports to answer children’s questions on how it all works.
How do the “different bits” that make up the Apollo 11 function? We were through that in no time with a model. Why is it chemically fired and not atomically? What will it push against in space? (Try [italics that [/italic] one). But best of all was “What will happen in the astronaut’s tears if they cry?” The answer is that the tears will float around the cabin. And if they cry a lot they will be swimming in tears. The seven-year-old girl who sent in the question must have sensed that Lewis Carroll was as much aware of the hazards of space travel as Jules Verne.
Both B.B.C. and I.TV. came up with some sticky emotional stuff in their moon commentating for the grown-ups. One I.TV. chap choked on “Man who is born and lived all his life on this earth . . . now . . .” Another I.TV. beauty was “The Americans are about to light a tremendous candle here this morning”. The B.B.C. countered later with “God’s in His Heaven and man is on his way there”. We also had “computers ticking like heart beats” and one of the astronauts “had already come a long way – from log cabin to space capsule”.
It might be said to have helped to put some human feeling into this terrifying affair. Heaven knows there is not much. Certainly not in John Mansfield’s brilliantly written and produced documentary, Out of This World (B.B.C.1), showing the career of Wernher von Braun, the man who designed the Saturn rockets and who is the brain behind past and future American space projects. He also designed the V-2’s that blasted savagely into London in 1944 killing or maiming nearly 10,000 people. We saw the notorious Peenemünde base, the rockets streaking across the Channel, von Braun and his team confidently surrendering to the Americans, and being quickly despatched to New Mexico to continue their research.
Now a respected and influential American citizen with some of his German colleagues still working with him, von Braun talked guttural fluency of nuclear rockets carrying men to Venus in the next 20 years.

NOSTALGIA for the kind of companionship that only seems generated in war-time by a communal danger has been worked almost to death in the last 25 years.
But Granada’s documentary If I Don’t Come Back – Have a Drink On Me managed successfully to resuscitate the emotion by tracking down the members of a bomber crew and taking them back to their old base in Lincolnshire. Middle-aged, balding, the seven men started off awkwardly, a forlorn group silhouetted against a bleak sky-line, until the only surviving Lancaster bomber came zooming down over their heads. They then remembered, with a growing despair for their lost youth and the inability to hold on to the feeling that once existed between them. I’m not sure how wise it is to stir all this up for the people concerned, but the experience was moving for the viewer.

The colour of Space
TELEVISION OSCAR TURNILL
[unrelated text]
We shall have to put aside one day our consciousness of the war and the late enemy: perhaps we have already begun to do so. What came through Granada’s exercise in nostalgia, If I Don’t Come Back – Have a Drink on Me, was that a Lancaster bomber crew of the 1940s, tracked down in middle age, have no recollection of the lust of battle. What they feel now is awe and pity at the scale of the destruction in which they had to share, and respect for one another.
David Naden, the director, was so right to interview them separately, and then inter-cut. The years between weren’t able to intrude; they still knew one another as they were then. And we could see that all equally lived in the present.

‘Mercy’ Flight To His Stricken Brother
IN a last-minute attempt to save the life of Signalman Robert Curnock (23), second son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Curnock, of 59, Minehead-street, Leicester, his brother Richard, a Warrant Officer in the RAF, has been flown from Italy to the stricken soldier’s bedside in a hospital near Cairo.
Mrs. Curnock told a “Leicester Mercury” reporter that Army doctors hope the brothers’ reunion may just tip the scales in Robert’s favour.
“My three sons, Sam, Bob and Dick, have all served in the war,” she said. “Sam, the eldest, held the rank of Second Officer in the RAF. It was a special rank and the nature of his secret duties has never been revealed to me. Four years ago he was reported missing, presumed dead.
“Bob, the second son, has been lying dangerously ill through typhoid fever and complications, since July. He is due for demobilisation, and should be home on release leave now.
“The Army doctors say there is ‘some hope’ for Bob, and we are praying that his brother’s visit will save his life.”
Mrs. Curnock said that should her son take a turn for the worse, she expects to be flown to Cairo.
Tribute to Staff
She added that the hospital staff had been “wonderfully kind” to her.
“I had 15 letters from them last week. They came from the doctors, the matron, and the nurses. They are absolutely fighting for Bob’s life. I think it is marvellous.
“When Dick arrived from Italy they insisted he should stay at the hospital instead of having the expense and inconvenience of an hotel in Cairo.
Mr. Curnock is a retired detective inspector in the LNER.

Robert Curnock was employed in the laboratory of the British United Shoe Company, while the youngest brother, Richard, was also employed in a laboratory of a Leicester shoe factory.
University College Extension Plans
A special committee is to be set up by Leicester City Council to report on possible sites for extensions to the University College.
A notice of motion to this effect presented by Alderman C.R. Keene, was carried at last night’s meeting of the Council.
Alderman Keene added that among the sites under consideration was one which, while not actually part of Victoria Park, was “between the existing University College site and the De Montfort Hall.”

Reaping the Whirlwind
The power of the Royal Air Force has been manifested over the week-end in the greatest air assault ever launched. Attacks on Friday night upon munition works in the Paris suburbs were on a large scale and enormous damage is admitted by the Vichy reports. They were, however, eclipsed by Saturday night’s battering of the factories in the Ruhr and the Rhineland. Over a thousand bombers were employed and the attack makes even the raids on Rostock and Lübeck seem almost minor affairs. The attack was mainly on Cologne. It lasted only an hour and a half, but during that time British aircraft bombed their objectives at intervals of only six seconds. It gives some idea of the scale of the operation to remember that in the biggest of the raids upon Great Britain in 1940 and 1941 the Germans never used more than six hundred aeroplanes; and these, though they had to fly a much shorter distance, carried a much smaller bomb load than the bigger and more modern machines now used by the R.A.F.
The whole attack was most skilfully planned. While the bombers were on their way to Germany large numbers of other bombers and fighters attacked the aerodromes from which night fighters might have been sent to intercept the raiding force on the way out and back. They brought down several enemy aeroplanes, and it was probably due in great measure to them that, in spite of the moonlit night, the losses were light in comparison with the weight of the attack. Great numbers of British aircraft have been sent, and will continue to be sent, to Russia to reinforce our allies in their great struggle on the Eastern front. The R.A.F. in the Middle East has been and is still being steadily increased. Spitfires which have recently arrived are now taking part in the fighting over the Western desert. In spite of all this dispersal, the force of the blows which can be delivered from home bases has grown in a fashion which must inspire trepidation among those against whom they are directed. And this is only the beginning. With the cooperation of American airmen the attacks upon German factories, ports, and railways during the coming summer and autumn will become devastating. MR. CHURCHILL in his congratulations to Bomber Command described the operations of Saturday night as “the herald of “what Germany will receive, city by city, “from now on.”
A German [italics] communiqué [/italics] describes the attack upon Cologne merely as “a terror “raid,” and belittles its effects in much the same way as it belittled the damage done at Rostock and Lübeck. It is safe to say that when the full reports are received the destruction done in Cologne will be found to have been on an even greater scale. The Germans are now learning in their own homes and their own cities, something of the loss and suffering which they have inflicted upon the civilian populations of other lands. Ever since they loosed war upon the world two and a half years ago they have boasted of the havoc wrought by the Luftwaffe and of the terror it inspired. They have gloated over what they did to Warsaw, Rotterdam, and Belgrade. They even made films of some of their greatest crimes for the delectation of patriotic Germans and as a warning to other nations to be careful not to incur the displeasure of the master race. It was part of German diplomacy abroad to exhibit such films in order to terrorize neutral countries into compliance with every German demand. HITLER himself threatened that the cities of England would be “wiped out” if the British people continued to stand up to him. By a long series of terror raids he did his best to carry out his threat, and there is hardly a city in Great Britain which does not bear the marks of his savagery. Now that the striking power is passing from the Luftwaffe to the R.A.F. Germany will begin to realize the folly she committed in entrusting her destinies to him and his comrades in crime.
“REPRISAL” RAID ON CANTERBURY
CHURCHES AND SCHOOLS DESTROYED
The streets of Canterbury were strewn with rubble and filled with fire pumps, many of which were brought from surrounding districts, yesterday after the Germans had made what they described as a “reprisal” raid on Sunday night.
Some 50 enemy aircraft flew overland, about half that number attacking the city. Three were shot down, one over the coast and two over their own aerodromes.
Among the casualties were the town clerk and his wife, who were trapped in their damaged house. Both were extricated, but the town clerk died on the way to hospital, where his wife now lies injured.
The fire services and Civil Defence, helped by neighbouring districts, worked magnificently and the fires were soon under control. Fire caused considerable destruction in a shopping centre and residential property suffered in the indiscriminate bombing. Two churches, a newspaper office, and two schools were among the buildings destroyed.
The Archbishop of Canterbury and Mrs. Temple, who were in Canterbury during the raid, are safe. The Archbishop visited people in the town yesterday and inspected the damage.
The Air Ministry and Ministry of Home Security report yesterday morning said:-
Shortly after midnight enemy aircraft made a raid on a town in south-eastern England. Most of the damage caused was in a shopping and residential district, in which some fires were started. A number of casualties have been reported.
Three raiders were destroyed during the night, one off our coast and two over enemy aerodromes in occupied territory.

WHEN YOU GO TO [underlined] CANADA [/Underlined]
[Page break]
[blank inside cover]
[page break]
UNDER the Empire Air Training scheme many officers and airmen are going overseas.
So, perhaps it may be better to ask “why are you going to Canada?” before dealing with the “when.”
The answer is fairly simple. The Empire is a Commonwealth of Nations, and individually we belong to the great family that Commonwealth embraces. Wherever we may have been born, we are kin. Each is contributing to the full in the war effort. Some things can be done more advantageously in one place; some in another.
Fully trained men command most of the resources available in Great Britain. These islands are the essential base for operational effort. There is neither sufficient free ground space nor free air space for training on the required scale. Nor, due to weather, can training be carried on so continuously as is necessary.
In the Dominions few of these hindrances exist. There is adequate space; there is a greater certainty of enduring good weather; there is no congestion in the air, and continuous training can be carried on.
This makes it possible to maintain the steady flow of pilots and crews necessary to man the increasing numbers of aircraft that are coming forward.
That, in the main, is the reason you are going to Canada instead of remaining in Great Britain. You are going so that you may more quickly play your part in the combined effort.
To make this possible, the various Dominions and other parts of the Empire
1
[Page break]
have contributed to an extent that is, perhaps, not fully comprehended.
In a remarkably short space of time, organisation has been perfected, aerodromes and training centres created and seemingly insurmountable hindrances overcome. The small peace-time Air Forces of the Dominions have been doubled and redoubled, and it has been necessary for instructors and maintenance personnel to be lent to them to build on the framework laid down by the Training Scheme.
Incidental to purely technical training, here is an added advantage; a wider personal scope. Belonging to an Empire as we do, every responsible traveller from one part of that Empire to another increase the sum of common knowledge, and his own store of experience. The transfer of personnel from one country to another should be, in fact, the transfer of so many unofficial but none the less valuable ambassadors. There is an opportunity beyond training in your voyage.
Now as to the “when” you go to Canada.
There are some practical matters to consider before the trooper puts out to sea, and the first (by almost general consent) is the question of finance.
PAY is now the same as that of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Official notes have given you the necessary details, but it is well to remember that emoluments are subject to British Income Tax.
The same notes deal fully with allowances and allotments to dependants.
It is essential that the official notes on these subjects should be read carefully, and arrangements made in accordance
2
[Page Break]
with them. Have all this done beforehand. The drill is laid down, and if by carelessness or thoughtlessness proper arrangements are not made prior to departure, it is not the fault of the Administration; but your own.
Concerning kit there is very little to be said. Central heating is general in Canada, in one form or another. Ordinary kit is sufficient, although what is known as tropical kit is worn in the summer. Normal sports kit will suffice. There is no need to take a topee. If you want to take a dinner suit by way of evening dress, there may be occasion to wear it. (You may a dinner suit called a “Tuxedo.”) Many people use the name. It sounds strange at first, but is certainly no stranger then the French “smoking.” Nobody smiles when the French refer to the “smoking.” As a friendly word of advice, don’t smile if some people use the word “Tuxedo.”
Special kit should be bought on the spot. It is generally cheaper and better suited to conditions than that bought beforehand.
In general, restrain the knowing smile at all things strange. The Canadians have the ultimate right to their own mode of life, their slightly strange vocabulary, and their other differences. It will be you who are the stranger welcomed in the gates. What they do is the accepted thing. If your ideas differ from theirs, the best advice is: get used to them, and like it.
Go prepared to like all the odd changes, and you will speedily find your way into the cordial friendship that is awaiting you. Above all, don’t tell the Canadians that “We don’t do that in England . . . or Scotland . . . or Wales, or Northern Ireland.” They won’t like it (unless you have
3
[page break]
sufficient immediate charm and disarming simplicity to get it “across”), any more than you would like implied criticism of your habits and customs in your own country.
THE VOYAGE. It is not a very long voyage; but you will probably find a certain amount of crowding, some seasickness, and orderly rush. There is a war on, so accommodation must be used to the full. Food will be ample and good: it is up to you (as the Canadians will certainly say) to make the best of it and to offer as little embarrassment as possible to hard-worked people who are running the outfit.
The days will be more easily borne than the nights. The ship will then be blacked out. Perhaps the Skipper may be emphatic. His job is to get you there in safety, and to preserve his ship for future use. Ships are vitally important to Great Britain. It is not likely that any “grinning and bearing it” will be necessary; but an honest smile makes things easier for you and for everybody else.
A fairly sound maxim in war time is to go abroad expecting a certain amount of discomfort. Go with that point of view and find yourself surprised at the small amount you really do have to suffer.
Among other discomforts, some of you must be prepared to find the sea disturbing. People are seasick quite unexpectedly. Even the stoutest sailors find that true. The Captain on the bridge may be sicker than some of his passengers; but he has to carry on through it, and does. Your servant or steward may equally be sick, and carry on. You yourself may be sick. At one moment you may be afraid the ship will go down because of the seas that are running, or the wind that is
4
[page break]
blowing. The next moment, as Mark Twain said, you may be afraid it won’t.
Seasickness gets those prone to it in just that way.
Unless duty keeps you on your feet, if you are seasick, lie down and close your eyes. Give your stomach something to work on – not solid food (anyway, seasickness will take care of that, so let us be cheerful); but simple liquids. Water is the best stuff for a queasy stomach to work on. Drink as much as you can when the thing hits you; if it does. It is better for the muscles to have something to show for the contractions they makes. Don’t take too much alcohol, either as a preventative or a cure.
Incidentally, if you are not a good sailor, you will notice a distinctly different flavour to beer and spirits for the first few days. An old sailor’s advice is to give the cocktails a miss.
Get your stuff stowed away as quickly as you an when you get on board Take advantage of the first few hours, when it is almost certain to be quiet sailing, to put your accommodation in order and to cause as little inconvenience to other people as you can. Either you or the other fellow may wish that advantage had been taken of those few hours that can be so precious.
If you are a hardened sailor, you will remember that a poor sailor likes least of all to be made to talk. Frankly, he just wants to be sick. And he usually is; so your words are going to be wasted anyway. Wait till he, too, is striding the deck for the usual four rounds before going down to meals – if there is a free passage for walkers.
5
[Page Break]
It is unnecessary to say “don’t grumble,” because you have all grasped the deep significance of the effort the Empire is making. Some people may not seem to be doing all they might, but the majority is doing vastly more then was ever dreamed of. The cooks are hard worked; the stewards and servants; the officers; the sailors and the sweating engineers and engine room staff are all doing their bit to drive your good ship to port and a happy haven.
It may be on your mind that those at home are being left in the “front line” while you are travelling to comparative safety. True enough; but there is a real purpose behind your going. What is causing you some anxiety is causing them happiness. Balance the one against the other. Anxiety is proper enough, and hard to bear; but there is not only an Empire at stake in this war, there is the whole issue of freedom; after a course of training well done, your lot and the lot of those at home will be joined again, with you taking a bigger and more efficient share in the shaping of the future.
You arrive. Unless you have been in Canada before there is not the slightest doubt that a surprise is awaiting you. The “pace” of life is different. Dress differs in some hard-to-discover particulars. There is an air of speed everywhere. Even people who have no particular reason to be hurrying still seem to be in a hurry. Locomotives have bells and deep-throated whistles. They carry searchlights on the long runs, just as a car in peace time carries headlamp. And for the same reason. The driver likes to see his road. There may, even, be a cow on the line.
6
[Page Break]
Ice-cream “parlours” do good business . . . North America consumes a vast quantity of soft drinks and ice-cream. Drug stores are not chemists’ shops pure and simple. They usually have a “soda fountain.” And there you can take your ice-cream sodas, or ice-creams and light refreshment. Which leads to the fact that the Canadians do, or certainly used to, make a lunch of ice-cream and a sandwich very frequently.
Meal times differ according to the Province and the size of the town or city. Breakfasts are hearty. There may even be a fried steak and hashed potatoes sometimes. Not our home way of doing it; but their way, and it has been found agreeable.
It is just as well to take what comes with a smiling good nature. Within a day or two the adaptable man will be wondering why the Canadian way was never tried at home. And that is precisely the attitude that your Canadian colleagues would respond to so swiftly as to be overwhelming. The good friend arrives quickly.
It may be worth remembering that all parts of the Empire, from the Mother Country and the great Dominions to the smallest island, are doing their share to ensure a happy issue out of the war. Canada has its problems of defence, is hard at work on munitions of all kinds, it is an important part of our larder, and at the same time is giving men for military service in all branches of the armed forces.
Consequently all Canadians are well aware that they are in the war alongside the other members of the family, and great sacrifices are being made by the people of the Dominion. Although friendship is
7
[Page break]
there for the making, perhaps it may be worth while remembering that Canada is getting on with the job, and the people will not have all the time in the world to make an excessive fuss of contingents from other places who are in their midst to be fitted for service.
The Dominion is wholeheartedly loyal to the Empire and the people are fiercely independent, properly jealous of their rights and privileges, their mode of life and their own point of view.
All this should be respected. No greater demands should be made on their tolerance than would be met if the position were reversed.
If you are strange to Canada, it Is not unlikely that you will be treated as a ”tenderfoot” for a while, and they will smile, even laugh, when some particularly marked mistake on your part is noticed. Still, we all went to school, and we all know what the new boy feels like. You will be the new boy, except that you will be treated not as a boy but as an equal, lacking special knowledge that can be obtained only be living among your colleagues. Go slowly.
Accustom yourself to distances that are commonplace to them. Canada is roughly three thousand miles wide. It is an ancient joke there that people from “home” (they often refer to Great Britain like that, very casually) think of running over to Moose Jaw from Montreal during the weekend because somebody has a cousin to be looked up. When slips like that happen, it is just as well to laugh with them at yourself.
The clear air makes for great visibility; things that are well out of reach seem
8
[Page Break]
near, especially on the prairies. Trust the map and other mechanical aids rather than your own judgment.
Canadians are fond of saying that the Dominion has a climate, but Great Britain has only weather. Certainly weather is more continuously reliable, and extremes are greater. Winter is long and unbroken, temperatures go well below zero, yet the air is dry and it does seem to be true that young men from Great Britain resist the cold weather, for a while. It is very unwise to trust that feeling of indifference to cold. Get into the habit of looking at the thermometer, if you intend to steer clear of frostbite.
Frostbite develops rapidly, and attacks the exposed skin without much warning. Treat the possibility with respect, and if a well-intentioned passer-by suddenly stops you and begins to rub your ears with snow, treat him as a friend and not an enemy. The Canadian people recognise frostbite, and don’t wait for an introduction before giving first aid.
Despite your “thicker blood,” dress as the Canadians dress. As a rule, because they live in centrally heated houses, where the average temperature is higher than in English homes (and more even), they wear light-weight underclothing all the year round, and put on heavier “Mackinaws” or overcoats when out of doors. Winter brings out a multitude of thick fur coats, with the fur outside, and you will see a procession of bear-like pedestrians in the streets of the cities. That is no strange sight to the Canadians; it may be to you. It is safe to say, however, that before long you will develop a liking for one of those fur coats. They are not cheap if
9
[Page break]
they are good, and a service greatcoat will probably serve just as well.
In the Spring, which is very short – winter today and summer in a few weeks – the snow melts rapidly, going is difficult in the thinly populated areas; people in the townships have started their journeys on sleighs and ended them on wheels.
Summer is as hot as winter is cold. During the winter the houses have had double windows, and, in the summer, doors and windows are screened with copper gauze to keep out mosquitoes and flies. Mosquitoes are persistent and numerous. They feed on anybody they can find, and although the consequences are not very serious they are very uncomfortable. Citronella oil, which can be bought almost everywhere keeps most of the mosquitoes away. When sitting out of doors during the summer evenings, joss sticks which burn with pungent fumes discourage the pests, and you will see many people sitting on the porches of their houses facing a “smudge” composed of damp straw which smoulders with a heavy smoke.
Sports, with the exception of cricket, are practically the same as in England.
In the “fall” (their word for Autumn), football is common; but played with a difference. Lacrosse is a fast and furious game calling for great skill. It has been called “hockey in the air.”
Baseball takes the place of our summer cricket, and its broad principles are easily mastered; the finer points, of which there are many, come with practice. It is fast; no idler’s game.
Skating and ice-hockey with snowshoeing and tobogganing are the usual
10
[Page Break]
winter sports. Ski-ing is available and popular in Quebec and Ontario.
All the essentials for a pleasurable life are there; but they may not always overcome boredom and home-sickness. There is so much to assimilate, and there is much to do in the way of training. Your sojourn over there will not be very long, however, and when it is finished the time will seem to have passed rapidly enough.
Money will perhaps puzzle you for a while. You will “think in English” and try to work out how much such and such an article really costs. If you work on the basis that a nickel (5 cents) is three pence; a dime (10 cents) is sixpence, a quarter of a dollar (25 cents, “a quarter” or “two bits”) is one and threepence, and a dollar five shillings, that will do for practical purposes. It will show you a profit of about ten per cent. in actual exchanges. Acquire the habit of thinking “Canadian” as quickly as possible, however. There is little difficulty in the exercise.
The cost of living is approximately on the same level as our war-prices, although some things are cheaper and some dearer than at home. Underwear and tobacco are among the cheaper commodities. Suits and overcoats are among the more expensive.
Although your training station may be far from the nearest town, the general principles underlying this booklet remain true, and it may be taken that there is not so marked a difference between the townsman and the countryman in Canada as there is in the home country.
The main purpose of your time in Canada, however, is training. The war may seem remote. Some of the dis-
11
[Page break]
abilities the people at home are suffering from will be removed; but you are in the war just as certainly, and the call on your services is just as immediate and should be as readily responded to. The sum of individual effort makes the total effort. The Empire with all its resources is unceasingly at work to shorten the war and establish a decent basis of society. Your particular contribution is as important as that of your colleagues. That it should be the greatest of which you are capable, is evident, that it will be, is certain.
With all the strangeness, and all the little perplexities, all the opportunities and new experience that your visit to Canada must bring, this interlude is really designed to enable you the better to pull your full weight in co-operation with personnel from all parts of the Empire.

For its third and last play of their Drama Festival at the Victoria Theatre, the Stage Club have chosen Terence Rattigan’s sparkling wartime comedy, “While the Sun Shines.”
In the role of the young earl in John Jarvis, who since his first appearance for the Stage Club in “French Without Tears,” has attracted unreserved praise from press and public alike for the excellence of his performance. Before joining the R.A.F., his last appearance on the professional stage was at the Vaudeville and Cambridge Theatres, London, when he appeared with Ann Todd, Sybil Thorndike and Renee Asherson in “Lottie Dundas.” In addition to work with the Kew Repertory Theatre and others, he has done a good bit of broadcasting and has also appeared in British Films, including “Under Cover” with John Clements and Michael Wilding, “Natasha” with Googie Withers and “The Fifth Freedom” in which he played opposite Sheila Sim.
The American Lieutenant will be played by Phil Miller, who has recently retired from the U.S. Army. Other newcomers to Stage Club productions are playing the female characters. Allan Hailstone, as the earl’s fiancee, has not appeared before on the Singapore stage, but has had considerable acting experience in England. Her husband, Lieuten-

ant P. Hailstone of the Royal Engineers is stage managing the production. Monica Gibson, a member of the A.T.S. has taken on the character part of “Mabel Crum” at very short notice.
The two remaining comedy characters are in the sure hands of Stage Club stalwarts W. Hynd Arthur and Francis Gilpin, while James Belchamber, who was a student of the R.A.D.A. when the Army called on his services, is producing the play.
