It operated from the Julian Pre-Alps to the Venezia Giulia region, the Emilia, the Carnia units, and the 9th Slovenian Corps. Silvio Marcuzzi was carried to Palmanova (Udine province) by lieutenant Borsatti. He was then brutally tortured in cell number 1. The floor was filthy and covered by blood. A piece of his brain was on the wall. He died on 2 November 1944. Four hours before the hanging sentence was carried out, he was screaming like a dog, calling strange names, singing. Those who saw him stated that, by that time, he was a wreck, bleeding everywhere, especially in the head. He was lacerated, barefoot, completely distant. He went insane, then died.”

Cossacks attack Esemon di Sopra
World War (1939-1945)
Cossack cavalrymen and foot soldiers attack the village of Esemon di Sopra. Three buildings are in flames, amongst them the village school. A woman is kneeling next to a door with a bundle in her arms and her head thrown back, while a soldier is carrying away a small bundle in his arms. Debris is scattered on the ground.
Label reads “180”, signed by the author, caption reads “9 NOVEMBRE 1944.
Caption translates as: “9 November 1944. Carnia, the Cossack cavalry storms Esemon di Sopra (Udine province), destroying and sacking everything on their path. Flora Buccioli wrote a journal article on the newspaper ‘Libertà’: “When, for the first time after that 12 October, I climbed down from the village on the hills, I stopped at Esemon di Sopra, facing the burnt houses. The blackened walls of the village school were in ruins. The beds and the furniture were laying in the background, mangled. I turned to the corroded wall of the school; only a rose garden had survived and, in the cold winter breeze, one last rose – small and pale – spoke amongst the ruins of a better future.”

Capture of the partisan Giovanni ‘Rasin’ Cargnello
World War (1939-1945)

Caption translates as: “(2) San Giorgio di Nogaro (Udine province). I personally witnessed the arrest of Cargnello Giovanni (also known as “Rasin”) by Borsatti. It was a warm afternoon, I was in the ‘20th September’ square. Borsatti was wearing a leather jacket, wielding a big gun. He was accompanied by other men and, moving from the corner of the square, arrested Rasin. This was Rasin’s end. He will disappear, because of brutal tortures, in the sewers and in the quicklime [pit] of the infamous ‘Piave’ barracks in Palmanova (Udine province).”

Mi spedirono a Dakau [Dachau] il 24 Febbraio”.
Caption translates as: “Palmanova, 19 December 1944-17 February 1945. Doctor Alfonso Zamparo (also known as “Liviano”) of Osoppo was hung for five hours in cell number 1. He was completely naked. From his own account: I was released from the ropes and pushed towards the entrance of the cell. The rope passed above the door and then secured outside, on the sliding lock. Then, I was hung with my feet above the floor. It was an ordeal: kicks, punches, canes, and musket shots lacerated my flesh. They threw at me buckets of ice-cold water, then hot, and I was given dense salt solutions to drink. I was sent to Dachau on the 24 February.”

Tempio ossario dei Caduti d'Italia being used as partisan hideout
World War (1939-1945)
During a winter’s night, in the street outside a church, two Alpini, a priest and another figure in the shadows are present. One of the soldiers is running away whilst the other soldier is clutching four rifles in his arms. Lights are on inside the church and the figure in the shadows is banging on the door. The the priest looks on, his hands held in prayer.
Inscriptions read “205”; signed by the author; caption reads “GENNAIO 1945.
Caption translates as: “January 1945, Udine. For many months, the ossuary church, stronghold of the “verdi” men of the Osoppo partisan Brigades, was the place of abode of two priests, Father Albino and Father Giorgio. They lived amidst weapons and provisions. They gave shelter to a partisan from Colugna, who was later killed by the Germans. Renato Del Din was the first fallen of the Osoppo Brigade. He had set up a secret workshop under the dome, supplying all partisan units in the mountains. A radio transmitter belonging to the unit lead by the British Major Nicholson, often operated without many precautions. The “Baracca” unit and the local command operated down in the church almost permanently. The confessionals, the organ platforms, and the organ itself were stuffed with weapons.”

Partisan ‘Napoli’ being tortured
World War (1939-1945)
A man is tied to a wall with blood dripping from head wounds. Two soldiers in green and black uniforms are threatening him with weapons. One is shouting and pointing to a bludgeon, whilst the other soldier is kneeling down pointing a rifle at the man.
Inscriptions read “208”; signed by the author; caption reads “GENNAIO 1945.
Caption translates as: “January 1945 – The Palmanova Martyrs… constrained and dripping blood, the hero was staring at his torturers with contempt, maintaining his bright gaze. “What’s your name” yelled the torturer. “Napoli” answered the hero. “Are you a partisan?”. “I am”, said he, cold and proud. “What is your task?”. To answer this question, the little Napoli gathered his strengths with extreme difficulty, he was exhausted. He got up – his body was miserable and emaciated – and, as a reprimand against the traitors of the people, answered: “I’ with the Patriotic Action Groups”. “Who are your comrades?” yelled the Fascist. “I am Neapolitan, I don’t know who they are”. He was knocked over by a bludgeon, but he still found the energy to reply “pig”. The little martyr was immediately tortured using more refined and cruel methods. “Napoli” started writhing. He had spasms and ached. He invoked his long-gone mother, but he doesn’t give away any information. A furious rush of blows knocked him over. The halo of the martyrs on his head, Father Garibaldi welcomes him in the heaven of the heroes.”
