Friday Nite –
Nov. 15 – 1946
My darling Cathie:
First I want to apologize for writing this letter before I’ve received an answer to the first one I wrote about a week ago – probably before you’ve even received it. But the night is dreadful – cold & I’m miserable – I’ve got a cold myself & feel lousy.
I just saw the picture “Temptation” based on the book Bella Donna – in which the beautiful English woman – played by Merle Oberon – finally brings about her own destruction. And Merle Oberon reminds me of you – remember her as George Sand in “A Song to Remember?” – not that G.S. reminds me of you. It’s something about Oberon which brings painful memories of you – her eyes – maybe? Mouth? Or is it her eyes – no hers are Oriental [two symbols] like that. You certainly don’t have Oriental eyes.
Darling Cathie – did you ever feel that life was not worth living? That you hadn’t the energy to go on and on and on – not knowing what to expect – nor caring – an empty, fathomless shell

of a life – when the person you love most seems unobtainable – Oh why bother you with my troubles.
But I feel like I’d like to be a little boy again and let my Mother put her arms around me & then cry my heart out. It’s a pity men don’t cry. I hear women must have a good emotional (damp) outburst every four weeks or they’re not happy. How can a man get the burden off his chest & mind? By fighting – by drinking – by being cynical & ill with everyone. I’ve tried all these mediums – I find no more pleasure in drinking; I still am cynical to a certain degree – and fight? I’ve had my share of them. Yes, it relieves you for awhile – not for long, though.
I’ve been listening to the 3rd movement of Tschaikowsky [sic] a Concerto in B flat minor – the same recording that I gave you. If you were listening to the same record perhaps I would feel it. Once I liked the 18th Movement; now it’s the 3rd.
I went to New York last night to see Ray Bulger in [deleted] “Call me [/deleted] “3 to Make Ready” – he’s the dancing comedian of films. The scenery was lavish, but the acts were

mediocre – lousy is a better word. Last week I saw “Call me Mister” – the hit revue of N.Y. put on by an all [inserted] ex [/inserted] serviceman cast. Scenery isn’t too hot – it’s even amateurish, but it’s been playing to a maximum of standees for the last 40 weeks & probably will continue for 2 or 3 years. Next Friday I’ll see “Annie Get Your Gun.” Ethel Merman’s new smash musical comedy – about Annie Oakley, the Western sharpshooter & Buffalo Bill. Hear that a London production will be put on by Jack Hylton with Beatrice Lillie playing “Annie.” Irving Berlin wrote the score & 3 of the tunes at at [sic] their crest in America now – “Doing what Comes Naturally,” “Falling In Love is Wonderful – So they Say,” & I’ve Got the Sun in the Morning.” Don’t know if they have become popular in England or not.
[symbol]
Cathie, I suppose I sound forlorn, but “dad-blame” it, I am. I was looking through some of my stuff today & ran across an old letter of yours – dated back in Jan. of this year. I read it & re-read it because it was all I had of you and it “did me good” to almost hear your breezy, perfect letter – voice – aw, what’s the use. You’re probably having such a time

in London with the Thespian circle that you have no time for this. But I hope you love the stage as much as I do the [underlined] Fourth [/underlined] Estate. I’m beginning to think of another way a man can let of [sic] steam – through writing – if he had the heart to do it.
I’ve got to see a dentist Monday. I hope it isn’t too long before my teeth are fixed. It makes such a difference – one of those things (how many times have I done it though?) you take for granted until it’s gone, and then you don’t know what to do.
Please excuse this writing, - or scratching I should say. When I don’t feel well, I can’t write – I have to be in a mood – of late, that mood hasn’t been often –
Cathie, I can’t continue this tonight – if I go on, it will only be something to make me & probably you) miserable. I just want you to know that my heart cries out for you & my head is spinning around & around – if only I could reach out across the sea & bring you to me!
Darling, regardless of what you’re doing now, of whom you have contacted, and of how you feel, I’ll ALWAYS love you. I could never love another, nor think of marrying anyone else. It just isn’t to be done.
[page break]
5.
I suppose it would be best to ask you not to write to me; to forget; that’s how it should be – for the good of all concerned, but I’m selfish & cannot do this.
Because without you – not hearing from you – knowing not if you were even interested, I have been wretched –
From your letter of Jan. 30 – 1946:
“…. as within my breast, This bud of Love by summer’s ripening breath may prove a beautious [sic] flower when next we meet ….”
It’s time I signed off – & let you go to sleep – I don’t know why, but somehow I have a feeling that you’ll receive this at night. Maybe a dark, stormy, [underlined] English [/underlined] night – when the wintry winds are howling at the eaves, and the cold drizzle adds misery to the pedestrians fumbling & stumbling along [indecipherable word] the darkness, groping for a rail or some mark of identification [symbol] Are the lights on – I mean [underlined] really [/underlined] on – once more in London. Do they miss the tramp of American feet – light-hearted, gay, a little overbearing and very outspoken, seeking a pub when a shot of Scotch was available or a meal, or a bit of fun.
You know, Cathie, the Americans aren’t hard to get along with. We – the English & I –

had our differences – would be a very boring world if we didn’t, but I think we had the same underlying nature –
Sat. morning:
The sun is out and the world seems a much nicer place to live – What a great difference a little ray of sun – or hope can make! Although it still is cold outside, the nip of the fresh air makes one ambitious –
Today I am charge of quarters at Base Headquarters, and for a few hours the entire base will be under [underlined] my [/underlined] jurisdiction – Spoils a weekend, but I would not have gone anywhere, anyway.
I’ll send you a little article I did on “I Remember England –“ It will be enclosed with this epistle. But I wish you were here to keep me company. A Wac is working across the room from me now, and I’ve made appointments for interviews this afternoon – for publication. I work when I’m working on another job.
There’s nothing else that strikes me as important now, but I’ll write every day if you want me to. Until I hear from you (or better) see you, I am
Yours forever & ever
Heathcliff

AIR MINISTRY
(Casualty Branch)
73-77 OXFORD STREET
LONDON, W.1
20th November 1946.
Dear Mrs. stone,
I hesitate to renew your grief by referring again to the loss of your husband, Pilot Officer G. B. Stone, however, a recent report received from the Royal Air Force Missing Research and Enquiry Service states that he is buried with the other members of his crew in the cemetery at DALEIDEN, Germany. (This confirms the German information already passed on to you).
This report also states that the graves have been registered, but that all the bodies will be concentrated to RHEINBERG British Military Cemetery, as soon as possible. The burial particulars will be forwarded to you as soon as they become available.
Your husband's grave will then be registered with the Imperial War Graves Commission, who will write to you to consult your wishes as to the wording of an inscription to his memory, when the permanent headstone is erected.
I sincerely hope that the knowledge that your husband's grave will be cared for in perpetuity by the Imperial War Graves Commission will be of some slight comfort to you in the great loss you have sustained.
Yours sincerely,
E. F. Butler (FLIGHT LIEUTENANT)
Mrs. I.M. Stone,
Nancyville,
Plantation Terrace
Dawlish, Devon.

Dear Mr Floyd,
You will probably remember me by name for I had the honour to be your sons navigator on his last and fatal trip to Germany.
I saw your letter of appeal for text books in The Times and it provided me with your address. Ever since my return from Germany, I have wanted to write to you but I was prevented from doing so primarily because my wife lost your address when moving here in 1943. In addition I hesitated to obtain your address through R.A.F. channels for I did not wish to re-open a subject which must have been very painful to you. However seeing your letter & the reference to your gallant son I am taking the risk of writing in the hope that you would be interested in his last journey. Please forgive me if I probe a wound that is not yet healed and do not bother to reply.
As you know, we were among the force of 1000 machines which set off to bomb Cologne on the night of 30th May 1942. It was a beautiful clear evening with a full moon & perfect visibility. All went smoothly until we were approaching the target area. We could see the flak ahead & the flashes of the bombs. We were about 13,000ft up & suddenly caught in the intersection point of a score or more searchlight beams. Their predictors must have been following us without our knowledge for there was no warning or trial beams. We were suddenly illuminated & obviously the focus of attention of a single unit or battery of lights. We had experienced this before, and your son, without worrying the slightest gave us an exhibition of his prowess as a pilot such as he had done on previous occasions. He dived, climbed, twisted, turned, stalled, & almost looped but, try as he could, was unable to get us out of the cone. By this time of course, it was not only lights that were worrying us. Being so firmly caught by the
2)
Lights we had become the target of a considerable volume of artillery & shells had been exploding all around. We had been hit several times but fortunately no one was injured & the flying qualities of the machine were not impaired.
Finally your son decided that more drastic measures were required and ordered me in my capacity as bomb aimer to jettison our bomb load. This being done, he put the machine into a steep dive & we careered madly downwards. We had to descend to 3000 feet before we were clear of lights which were extremely persistent. However, he pulled out of his dive when we were no longer illuminated & we endeavoured to set a course for home. It was only a matter seconds before we were caught up in more lights & then saw to our horror that we were within range of relatively light A.A. fire which was being “hosepiped” at us from all directions. I remember most distinctly your son saying most calmly that he thought “we had had it” but of course he didn’t give in without a fight. He started climbing & trying to dodge streams of tracer ammunition flying in our direction but a few moments later the mid upper gunner reported that an engine was on fire. A bullet had pierced the container for the engine coolant material which had drained off with the result that this engine quickly overheated & burst into flames.
Conditions were now desperate but your son was completely unruffled. He coolly ordered the crew to bale out & applied himself to steadying the machine until we were all clear. We were of course loosing height at an alarming rate & to behave as he did required the steadiest of nerves.
There was a short queue to escape from the front hatch & while waiting my turn I tapped your son on the knee & held out my hand. We couldn’t speak for the noise of the running engine & the rushing wind drowned everything else. Your son quietly grasped my hand, smiled & then concentrated on his job of pilot & captain of the machine. He knew that it was his duty to remain at his post until all his crew were as safe as it was within his power to make them i.e. they had left the machine by parachute.
I am afraid that in his [?] for us he gave himself no chance. A few seconds after shaking his hand I was
3)
Dangling at the end of a chute & my first recollection was that of our machine hitting the ground & completely bursting into flames. Your son must have died instantly &it is no exaggeration to say that at the cost of his own life he saved those of five others.
You can imagine the grateful & aching memory that I have of a gallant English gentleman. The gratitude of our wives, mothers & other relations & friends needs no telling from me.
When I reached a British POW camp I reported your sons courageous behaviour to a British officer in the hope that news of it might be conveyed officially or otherwise to this country. He listened sympathetically but regretted his inability to help.
I landed in Mulheim or Oberhausen (they adjoin) in the Ruhr. I wonder if you have any news of your sons grave & would be grateful for any information you care to give me.
From my first issue of official POW notepaper I sent you a letter or (card) from the survivors of your son’s crew. Conveying our condolences & our respect for your brave son, in whose debt we shall always remain.
If I am not causing you too much pain by this recital, I shall be more than pleased to give you any further information in my power. Please do not hesitate to write.
Yours sincerely
J.R.M. Valentine (signed)
