Dear Kaye
I’m afraid this won’t be a very long reply to your very welcome letter as I’ve got to catch up on a hell of a lot of correspondence because I’m embarking on board ship on Mon, and we’ve been told that during the time we’re aboard no mail is to be received or sent! I’m expecting to be away for about 3 weeks so you can understand I’ve to let my numerous “fans” know what’s happened or else they’ll be giving me the “chuck over”.
Where we are going to is a mystery, although somehow I don’t think it’s any death & glory stunt (I
[page break]
hope not!) I imagine it’s for some very extensive manouvres [sic] & there is some talk of leave after they’re finished although don’t take [underlined] that [/underlined] for granted – I’ve been let down too many times before!
In a way, I’m not sorry to be leaving this place – the role of a country yokel would never suit me I’m afraid. I believe we are returning to somewhere near Glasgow. So I’ll be able to write you some interesting letters from there, as it’s full of life [deleted] and [/deleted] or, I should say – the spice of life.
I think the least said about your Post Card from Skegness, the better don’t you, Kaye? I’ve been hunting all over Hawick for one to send you, but I haven’t seen one to equal it. Or perhaps it’s just my mind eh? that saw the rather rude double meaning!
Well, Kaye, I’ll close now and will write again as soon as possible and tell you all I’ve been doing on board ship. Well, nearly all anyway! Best love to P & C & everyone at Lincoln Tons of love Hope to [underlined] see [/underlined] you soon! Ron xxxxxxx

Tuesday,
Dear Vic
Many thanks for your letter which reached me here today. Your news is pretty grim and makes me think more than ever what a bloody stupid war this is. When fellows like Johnny and Snow-white and kids like[indecipherable word] and Ian Hay just get written off like that things have reached a hell of a state.
As you say however, it is possible that Johnny and the boys will be alright and we may learn before long that they have been taken prisoner.
It is exceptionally rough for Snow-white's wife in her present condition and I hope she can take it.
[page break]
2/
Ian Hay's exit was a pretty ghastly affair and knocked me physically sick. He had just become air-borne when something screwy happened and the kite slipped out of the sky on her port side. Almost before we realised what had happened a huge fire told us the worst.
I haven't been exceptionally keen on flying since that day.
There was every reason for you to believe that I too had gone out of circulation so there is no need for you to blame yourself for passing the "duff gen" on to Joyce.
I wrote to her on Sunday and explained that I was still kicking vigorously.
[page break]
3/
Her reply reached me with your letter this morning so everything is now O.K. in that respect.
If everything goes to plan, I shall be in York on Saturday evening, but apart from that you can expect me popping up at any odd time when days off after "ops" permit, etc.
So until I see you again old boy cheerio, and good luck.
Your old pal
Maurice

Topcliffe.
Friday.
Dear Vic
this bloody place is still the same; the wind blows as strongly as ever and there is the same interminable mud and mess.
There are still bloody great crowds at meal-times; the same bloody awkward ground staff wallabs; the same binding, bloody, bullshit. Generally speaking, it is pretty bloody.
There aren't many blokes left who I knew when last here, but there are one or two, and fortunately they are quite good eggs.
[page break]
2/
That binding little bastard Flynn, who used to be 77 Squadron Discip. merchant, now holds the odious position of S.W.O. Whether he has changed or not since attaining this significance I cannot tell, for I have not as yet come into direct contact with him.
From a central position in the ante-room, a bloody horrible photograph of the late S.W.O. (Joe Cuthbertson) leers down on all and sundry with as much to say, as "if you bastards had been here in my time I'd have bloody well shaken you."
You will probably have gathered by this time that I am not very keen about the place.
[page break]
3/
Ian Hay was nabbed for A.C.P. last night and it kind of shook him for he had anticipated having aeroplanes and crews showered bountifully upon him the moment he showed his cherubic face.
I haven't done a bloody thing to date, excepting to sit on my "ring" and moan loudly to any unfortunate person within hearing.
Riley and I have been stuffed in the gym at Skellfield Hall for the time being, and our room-mates are the most horrible bunch of "sprogs" from O.T.U. Needless to say, we have shot quite a few hefty lines.
[page break]
4/
I haven't as yet come across any of Johnny's old pals excepting of course F/Sgt. Burley who still rules the roost.
Bill Swayne (or Swain) has gone to an O.T.U. near Stratford, so Johnny can probably discover the exact address and write to him there.
As far as I can gather, the old car has been taken from behind the "Angel" to some unknown place, by a person who rejoices in the name of F/Lt. Jordan.
Well that's all the 'gen' for just now, so cheerio and good luck to both of you.
I'll be seeing you,
Maurice.
P.S. please excuse various shades of ink. M
