Dear Unk etc.
Far from being the pleasant saunter through smiling fields, life has developed into a dirty big route march plus pack plus sore feet etc, [sic] . If the weather doesn’t hurry up and break down I shall be spark out from exhaustion by the end of the week. We have done so much flying lately that the bloody seagulls nod to us every time we cross the coast.
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
As for getting into town and getting down to a spot of real RAF war winning – that is just a memory. If anyone put a pint in front of me now, I shouldn’t know what to do with it. Even when we reckon on being back for eta, the blasted navigator gets lost and we stooge for two hours looking for the bleeding ‘drome. Personally – just between you and me – I can’t see any future at all in this job.
However at the time of writing I am still alive - not that it is
[page break]
[underlined] 3. [/underlined]
their fault mind you. From some of the trips they give us I have got the idea this camp is overcrowded and they are taking the easy way out. Still as I say I am still here and in the kind of health you would expect a six weeks [sic] corpse to be.
Other than the little trifles mentioned, things are much the same. No news of any importance and only the thoughts of you boys paying for it all to keep me going. I haven’t received your last letter – mainly because I don’t suppose you
[page break]
[underlined] 4. [/underlined]
have written it yet. Still I thank you in anticipation.
As you expect it of me, I again express the wish and hope all are well at the shop. It doesn’t make any difference as I have wished a lot of things about some of you but as they have never come off; or has Hunty broke his leg yet? By the way I never saw Bill Collins last time I was up. You might apologise for me and give him my regards.
I never told you where I spent
[page break]
[underlined] 5. [/underlined]
the last night of my leave, but you can guess. Your mind is dirty enough. I think I’ll close this letter now, I’ve written quite enough. In any case, you’ve heard it all, it’s just the same old stuff. Remember me to all the boys. I’ll write another time, and if you use your blasted eyes, the last six lines in rhyme.
Three cheers. Etc.
Love Pete.
P.S. Wyn sends her love. Not to you stoopid [sic] but to Arthur Warren.

Dear Unk etc.
Once again I lift the quill and score another mark in the literary history of the world. Taking things by and large, life is just too, too divine. I have, you will notice, developed a remarkable habit of looking on the bright side of things. We have been on the deck now for days and days, and boy – can I take it. If they only keep it up, and me down, until Uncle Joe wins the war, I shall
[page break]
personally subscribe to a top-hat for him – Joe. This way of winning the war may seem just a little odd but believe you me – it has quite a lot to recommend it and I am all for it.
Otherwise life is moving along its pre-ordained path. The bright city lights continue to beckon me, and, being of a gullible nature they do not beckon in vain. In fact, it could almost be said that they are usually about three paces behind with said beckoning. Heaven give me the health and strength to keep it up while the cash lasts. To break down at such a crucial stage in my war effort would be
[page break]
[underlined] 3. [/underlined]
nothing short of a disaster.
The only fly in the ointment at the moment is the fact that they have stopped all the 'buses into town and while I can usually manage to hitch a lift in, the way back is a footsore and weary seven miles. Any moment now I expect a bill from the local council for wear and tear on their main road. I am able to judge the distance by the size of the blisters and have a nodding aquaintance [sic] with every cow in every bloody field on the way.
[page break]
I hope the mob are still hanging around at P.R. and have not yet been dispersed to their new jobs yet. However, if they can only bring in the same organised “Minders Rest Room” at the new places I think the war could carry on without a lot of undue interference. Mind you the times the war has been won in the original M.R.R. the best place to shift the mob to is Downing Street. Always provided they can fit a [corrected] cistern [/corrected] and gutter in the Cabinet room.
One of these days they are going to give us a bit of leave and will I have a rake round then – or
[page break]
[inserted] 5. [/inserted]
will I? After three months in this God-forsaken dump I could go [sic] a bit of civilisation in a really big way. If any more half-wits at the shop feel like joining up you might take a decent swing at their skulls with a good sized piece of pipe. Do them a world of good and hurt a lot less. Not but there are plenty of laughs, but they are mostly on you. There is some talk of raising our pay but I think it is only our hopes they are raising.
How is Herbert getting on these days? I though he was remustering [sic]
[page break]
to a pilot or some such damn fool thing but he should at least know better the time he has spent in the RAF. The other goons had better take my word for it and keep both feet firmly planted on the good earth. Only fools and birds fly and I have yet to see a minder with bloody feathers. I spend so much time these days with my ring twittering that it takes a week on the ground before it stops moving.
By the way – thanks for the books which arrived nice and welcome the other day. Thanks also for your letter which
[page break]
[underlined] 7. [/underlined]
arrived about the same time. Don't think for one moment that just because you fly off the handle and swamp me with correspondence that I am to be coerced into rushing into letters at short intervals. I am not in a position to write much more than I do. I can either write or fly and the big shots won't let me write. Write or go to town – well I ask you?
Remember me to all the herbs left at Park Royal. It will look a bit strange when I return there and see some
[page break]
of the fittings and fixtures missing. There will be quite a tearing noise when they move some of the loafers. Give my love to Bro. G. and tell him not to worry everything is going according to plan – the bother is we don't know whose plan it is. However I am keeping my eye on things and hope to have my war won very shortly and then I will tell him all about it.
Kiss Rusty and the old RIP for me. Give my regards to Uncle Jack and No 6 crew.
All the best
Pete.

Dear Unk.
Thanks for your letter and books. Very welcome and popular. At present things are – if not full – at least as full as they can be without splitting the seams. At the present moment the future holds nothing but more trips with their usual complement of ring twitters. In fact I have spent quite a few hours with said ring on a slice of lemon. Still it saves wasting valuable beer money on salts.
[page break]
The big city's lights have not seen me for quite a while lately, but sometime next week I am due for a rest and will I have one? Will I hell. If I cannot do it any other way I shall buy me a pub of my own and really get weaving. How in Hades I am going to explain my absence to my little Potteries playmate I don't know. She doesn't believe me a lot at present so how my next line will go with her is a bit of a puzzle.
So you have had a visit from our old esteemed Cherry. I'll lay he is very glad he joined and got all the benefits of a holiday with congenial companions – vidé [sic]
[page break]
seems to be doing plenty of home work. He wants to look out before they issue him with a pair of shorts and a sun-hat. After his stay at the “Old Welsh Garage” I don't think he would go for that in a very big way. I can't understand Charlie not being in love with his work. Bags of fresh air and exersise [sic] and all that. He should have been in the mob before it got really well organised. Us old hands have got the bloody war well aired for him. One way and another this fighting business doesn't seem to be so popular with the boys as it was. I can even see Moloney
[page break]
[underlined] 5. [/underlined]
coming unstuck one of these days – I hope.
As for the rest of the loafers at Park Royal. Tell them I am still thinking of them but what with a possible censorship etc. I can't write what I am thinking. Not that I wish to appear niggly in any way but if they think I am going to do their fighting indefinitely they had better look around for a good substitute as I have just about been reigning champion long enough. Just because Bro. G. won the last do on his own it is no good expecting me to do the same.
[page break]
He was only fighting the Indians and it took him four years.
I hope the rest of the chapel are still under control and not doing anything rash like have a do or dinner without Mr. Hunts [sic] consent – always freely given if asked for. In any case that's all he ever gave. If Rusty still gets his usual bother with the “Old RIP” tell him to use a firm hand and refuse to buy him his Friday nip.
Remember me to all the boys. Fred Baulch etc. See you sometime.
All the best.
Pete.
P.S. A certain party wrote to
[page break]
[underlined] 7. [/underlined]
me and suggested you were a low type but after all I told her that I knew that in any case.
P.P.S. She also said that if she could meet you again it would be just too bad for
someone after all your promises.
P.P.P.S. Also she'd use your guts for garters.
P.P.P.P.S. And thats [sic] not a bad idea at that.

Dear Uncle [underlined] Etc. [/underlined]
I have just received your most welcome parcel. Very – very funny – I am laughing my bleeding head off. If Bert Smith hasn't anything else to do, I'll nip along and bust up the chapel and he can amuse himself putting it together again. This should help him keep his finger out of his rectum.
Strange though it must seem to people who live in the backwaters, life has been too full lately to allow for any literary efforts. What with this and that, it is taking me all my time to keep the spark of life burning in my mortal frame. The fact that I am writing shows that even us warriors must have time out for a blow.
Generally however things are not too
[page break]
grim. They feed us on the fat of the land and even if they don't exactly treat us like the favourite son we are near enough reckoned as one of the family. What with W.A.A.F.S. waiting on us by day and for us by night, everything is served up on a plate. Given the health and strength I confidently expect to be a physical wreck early in the New Year. If only the town was a bit nearer I could do it by Christmas.
The camp generally is one of the RAF's worst efforts however and if it didn't have its compensations I am afraid we should all be in the loony bin in double time. If you don't hear from me for a few weeks it will be because I am marooned in my hut. The fine weather weather [sic] we had one night last week only put a thin crust on top of the mud. [sic] As the weather has been back to normal since the mud is back to flood level.
[page break]
I hope the three stooges are making the most of their holiday at the publics' [sic] expense and enjoying their last hours in England. Let me know when they get their orders so that I can send them my congratulations. I should like to run into them one of these days and tell them my experiences to keep their morale up – especially “Old Ivory”.
There is a rumour drifting round that we are getting a few days leave but I am a bit sceptical at present as they never give anything away here. However if I do strike I shall try and move over again.
Things I take it are still much the same at Park Royal and you are all looking forward to a rest from your arduous labours and hope to give your elbows a good rest. Mr. Hunt is supplying the turkeys again at his usual competitive prices I suppose? Now his transport arrangements have been upset I imagine
[page break]
the war has at last begun to take toll of his stacks of cash?
The boys here are bloody nigh all balmy [sic] and think it good fun to chase off the deck and clip the trees at the end of the lift. Its [sic] all right when there is [sic] only dummy's [sic] on the hooks but it gets a bit exciting when there is a war load on. Not that I see anything of it, all I know is there is a shower of shit going to fall on Mrs. Lamprey's son if somebody don't [sic] kill my bloody pilot while he is on leave.
Well my friends be good and all the usual bull about the seasons [sic] greetings.
Yours Pete.

Dear Unk – Others. Bill Spalding.
Once again I climb into the ring for another round of troub. [sic] I protest against the gross misrepresentation as laid forth in the issue of the “Royal” just received. Tiree was never at any time a love nest. As my letters from there points out, ever [sic] the sheep were shy. And another thing my name is not spelt like a soda water siphon. However once more I send thanks for the letter – the Royal and the cash. Thank Alf Barnes for the stamps and may his parsnips prosper.
Before I forget. I have news of Fred Gunner. He is well and
[page break]
[underlined] 2. [/underlined]
has just moved up into the line again after being wounded in the foot in the retreat to Egypt. This was his second spell in hospital as he had been down with dysentery [sic] some while back.
Life - on the whole – has lifted the reins off the horses [sic] neck. From being between the shafts I am now on the tail-board. Not that everything is altogether – shall we say – choice. I had at one time been under the impression that there could not be any more mud about than on some of the other camps I had landed in. I was wrong. This dump is so full of mud that the Southend Corporation have protested against the infringement of their prerogative [sic]. What the hell they put these camps in the arse end of the country for, I don’t [sic] know. You can walk miles
[page break]

in any direction and still arrive nowhere – fagged out. Still life is fair to middling and we hope to settle down and raise a fine time.
The big adventure of being a Senior N.C.O. is that they fetch the beer in to you instead of having to go out and fight for it. And quite a decent drop of stuff if I might say so. At present I am lying low and watching points but can be expected to bust [sic] out at any opportunity and really wreck my perfect health. Some of the mob here are pretty good but some of them are not bright enough to be called dim. If I pick some of them in my crew they will have my resignation by first post in the morning.
I hope the three stooges at last realise what can be done
[page break]
by hard work and application to duty. Not that they will be this side of the drink for long if I am any judge. I hope to run into them at some time and will give them a few tips on success.
The amount of news from here is sweet F.A. and until something breaks the letters will be full of nothing but blah. Remember me to the mob. Look after this and that.
All the best.
Pete.

Once upon a time there were three bears. Father Bear - Mummy Bear and Baby Bear. Why in hell all fairy stories start like that I dont [sic] know. Anyrate [sic] - three bears, and what with the old man on night work and the old mum on munitions during the day, it looks like that's all there'll ever be at that. Mind you - don't think this is going to be all about baby bear. He was a hell of a lot too cheeky and a good swift clump was recommended but never applied.
So getting back to our tale. Three Bears. Usual effects, such as; little
[page break]
[underlined] 2. [/underlined]
little [sic] house in woods and all the other guff. Well one day a beautiful blonde airman called Goldilocks was having a scrounge in these here woods. The erks called him something else but he had them hanging in the right places and it was no good. Moreover he could roughouse [sic] a bit and it didn’t pay much [deleted] dini [/deleted] dividend. Well Goldilocks was, as I say, keeping his eyes peeled for a nice quiet spot in case he ever got round to a date with a WAAF and you don’t want people treading on you at a time like that. All of a sudden he sees a notice –
[page break]
[underlined] 3. [/underlined]
“Private - Keep Out - This Means You” so he went in, and there he found the bears domicile. Nipping craftily round the back he lets himself in and proceeds to have a good old snoop round. Well there it was - like the story book. Three plates of porridge and a bottle of Trubrown [sic] beside the old mans [sic] dish. Having only just had his three course RAF lunch he was naturally starving so he proceeded to scoff the lot. The Bloke that wrote that piffle about “this one was too hot and this one was too cold” never served any time. If its [sic] there – grab it.
[page break]

Well so here we are. Goldilocks – full of porridge and wind and nothing to do. Upstairs we go and there’s the old bunks – beds or pits. Yes and you’re right. What with the old puppies aching and a thick night in town last night he thinks he might as well. Good luck to him. Plot develops on normal lines. In comes the old mum - having passed Mr. Bear on the way up - and baby bear. Playing up to the old tradition the kid starts the old nonsense about “who’s been eating my porridge etc [sic]?” But, what with the old back aching and a bit of pain in the noddle, the old lady slips

him a right hander. Well placed but about five years too late. This nice bit of work stopped his game and in any case you couldn’t get the perisher to touch the stuff normally.
Well here we are again. All set for round two as it were. Goldilocks pounding his ear upstairs and the bear family below. Reading the script to make sure there was no boobing, upstairs go the bears. Junior, word perfect as usual, says his little piece all about “someone’s been sleeping in my bed” and then beats it to play with the other kids. Then it was the turn of Mrs. Bear,

into the bedroom she goes and on her nice soft bed she spies Goldilocks. With great presence of mind, and in any case the story had got all balled up, she locked the door and well - after all, what with the old man on night work and the kid out of the way for a couple of hours I don’t blame her, at that.
Dear Bill
I am Well.

Pete.

Dear Bill etc.
Don’t think I am getting niggly but, the last time I heard from you was around about last Xmas – or near enough. Now don’t think for one moment I am binding but., [sic] if I don’t get something soon I shall have to presume you are missing, hoped etc.
We – us gallant air-crew – are suffering from a severe set-back to our plans at the present moment. They are making us fly, and no
[page break]
amount of pointing out that this idea was never contemplated when joining, will make them alter their ways. I have spent so much time off the deck lately that I have to think twice before I go to the bog as to whether I ought to take my ‘chute.
The weather has been lousy lately, clear skies and high cloud. We don’t seem to have enough winter lately, what we really want is a nice fall of snow – about nine foot deep – and then I might get a bit of bloody rest. Still it can’t last for ever and either
[page break]
the weather will break or I will.
News otherwise from here is nil or taboo so what in hell I am to write about I dont [sic] know. You don’t want to hear about my life in the mess. You know they sell that wicked stuff called beer in there so you can guess how I spend what evenings I manage to scrounge off.
Time off has been at a minimum lately so there has been no time to write to any of the other herbs. In any case I don’t think a senior N.C.O. ought to be too pally with the erks. You can mention my views if. [sic] you write to them at any time.
[page break]
I take it that all are well and happy at P.R. just easing the old war along nicely and not letting it get out of hand? If Uncle Dave is still running off the rails and getting into his old RIP habits again detail Rusty to speak sharply to him. Remember me to the rest of the works wonders.
Don’t be to [sic] sudden in replying, I have a horror of the unexpected.
Three cheers
[underlined] Pete. [/underlined].

Dear Unk etc.
For pity’s sake what is all rush of letters about? Almost look as if you were working up for another long lay off. Still – despite the consequences thanks a lot. The news does not sound as if it is going to be so hot at Park Royal once the big shift gets under way.
Things here are just fine. Bags and bags of rest with only a couple of hours in the
[page break]
air every day. The only bother is they won’t wheel out a pass so that I can hike for the hills. We were due for leave but it has been scrubbed for some bloody reason. Nobody knows and nobody cares except the poor blasted air crews.
However we have been making our way into town fairly regular [sic] and I now have half interest in a pub there. He sells it – I drink it. And I have a fine bunch of helpers working with me. Once or twice it has been a moot point whether to throw us out of the bar or swab us out. In fact bar for a slight movement
[page break]
[underlined] 3. [/underlined]
of the eyes quite a [deleted] nub [/deleted] number could have been called drunk. I know why they make us keep fit now. If we weren’t we could never last through our rest periods.
Other than that I am not working life goes on it’s [sic] old sweet way. Half the time I am wondering why I joined and the other half wondering if I can get out the easy way. I can’t see a hell of a lot of future in this job no matter what angle I look at it from. If ever anybody talks to me about
[page break]
“keep ‘em flying” I shall have the greatest pleasure in taking them apart to find out what makes them tick. Other news is taboo – or the interesting news is.
Glad to hear that the rest of the boys are enjoying the[inserted] i [/inserted] r [deleted] e [/deleted] period of service and hoping it will last for ever. Once Charlie gets the crease out of his pants he will find that he only fancied he was browned off before. It takes quite few months for the real nut brown stain to come right through. As for Moloney, let them shift him from his backyard and
[page break]
[underlined] 5. [/underlined]
will I smile – or will I?
There is not a lot to write about and if my letters are getting shorter it is because I can’t sit down for long these days. However I will – as usual – try and write once a week even if it only says I am brassed, which you should by now take for granted.
Remember me to all the herbs and wish Archie luck for me – Jesus what a target he won’t make for Jerry. As for Rusty – George and the others who seem to be in the slide
[page break]
give them the usual greetings and hope they are back soon. Remember me to Fred Cooper and the other OPA’s. [sic]
My rest is up on Saturday so I shall try and write about Monday or so.
Look after yourself etc.
[underlined] Pete. [/underlined].

Dear Unk.
After the spate of correspondence you hurled at me you now seem to have struck a sterile patch. One great thing about you is your reliability. You can always be trusted to do the unexpected. Not but that life being what it is, the unexpected is practically all I get these days at that.
Things, without giving away vital secrets, are the same as when I last wrote. That means that sometimes
[page break]
we fly, and sometimes we don’t. When we don’t we wish we were and when we do we wish we weren’t. If they could only guess what we really wanted to do all the time life would be just fine. Still things are not too bad and I expect to find myself satisfied one day.
Not having had the news from P.R. I don’t know whether to congratulate anybody on dodging the column again or commiserate with them for having to start working for their living. It will shake quite a number when they find working a machine means more than sticking two fingers up and yelling down the hole. If Uncle Jack has to go it will at least
[page break]
give Harry Beachams [sic] back a rest.
Since starting this epistle I have, through devious channels, heard some bad rumours about the shop so I will pack it in a get the letter away. Hope the rumours are wrong and as soon as I hear from you will write back whether they were right or not.
Hope things are OK.

Dear Unk.
Very, very funny. I am laughing my bleeding head off. My friend you can use the sand you sent me for a boring powder. Despite all things however, thanks for the letter – the “Royal” and the P.O. May heaven bless all your projects and your wife never find out. I am glad to see that all the servings [sic] members are getting by in no uncertain manner. If Cherry thinks they will let him rest on his laurals [sic] as an A.C.I. he wants to get some service “gen” in. They will badger the blasted life out of him until they kid him to
[page break]
[underlined] 2. [/underlined].
remuster to some other damned trade. As for “Spud” it is suprising [sic] that he should still be anywhere near motors, seeing that he joined as an M.T. driver.
I have never – at least hardly ever – tried to agitate the urea with Bro. George as you are so fond of accusing. If I feel like giving three cheers for the old war-horse now and again, who are you to try and get me to abuse him? Seeing that he and I have manhandled two wars alone it is about time someone else borrowed his bow and arrows and did a bit of helping Uncle Joe out.
So far life is nice and quiet, and I am all for it. Every time they try and send us up the weather goes on its knees and refuses to get up – praise be to
[page break]
[underlined] 3. [/underlined]
Allah. Still I suppose they will eventually drag me screaming into a kite and make me fly again. This bird man business is all right until some dumb cluck takes the ground away from underneath you, and then you wish you had joined the Salvation Army. I like the posters about the brave air-crew – they must be advertising the Luftwaffe. The bravest deed last week was asking for twenty Players in a stange [sic] pub.
The call of the city has had to go unheeded for quite a few days with all this standing by nonsense, but as the effects of the last visit are still apparent, and will be until next pay-day, it is a good. If they could only let a couple of the crews from here loose in
[page break]
[underlined] 4. [/underlined] the Berlin pubs there would be no need for eight thousand pounders. They can wreck a pub quicker than a land mine after about six drinks. The station is full of Aussies and Canucks and believe you me, they are as tough as Herr Rommel’s mark VI tanks, with slightly less finesse. The authorities have been clamping down on us lately owing to some slight bother with the Staffordshire Constabulary. That – we understand – is the reason for being under stand-by orders for more than three days at a stretch. If they don’t lift the order by next pay-day I am afraid the boys will carry the camp into town bit by bit and then fetch the town back to play with in their billets.
[page break]
[underlined] 5. [/underlined]
I heard – from a very roundabout source – that Waterlows had received a little present from our opposite numbers. However your letter shows that it was, fortuneately, [sic] only a rumour. Still they were near enough, no doubt, to cause a major attack of ring quivers in the fire watching department. If you people want us to unload excretus [sic] over there, you are bound to get a splash back now and then just to show we haven’t quite beaten the last brick into the deck yet.
The other news from here is of little interest so we will skip [deleted] p [/deleted] it. I hope [deleted] is [/deleted] everything is under control at your rest camp and that no more has been heard of this business of sending some of the pillars of the chapel away to
[page break]
far flung regions where they will be made to work. From what I remember, this would cause a severe attack of heart failure in anyone bar Sam ie. [sic] Deputy F.O.C.
Remember me to all the herbs and keep your legs crossed. All the best
Pete.
P.S. I hear the land army are striking for longer tools and shorter periods.

Dear Unk etc.
What in hell you people expect me to write about, I don’t know. Nothing ever happens to me – I hope. This thing called life just keeps on and on. All I see before me is an endless vista of going up and coming down, or at least that is the general idea at present. If anyone wants to alter it they can have my resignation immediately or sooner.
We did a training flight last week and coming in over the coast ran into a bunch of nice, keen A.A. gunners
[page break]
who proceeded to try and knock 8- out of us. Decent guys. We had the old kite going like a Mark IX Spitty [sic] as soon as the first one burst and if we had only had another pint in the tanks would have made Canada in about ten minutes. Its [sic] a great life – thats [sic] why half the perishers are trying to take it from us. I can see us having an unfortunate accident one night and unloading some urea on a certain gun site and see how they like being at the receiving end.
Otherwise I have been living like a lord. Getting up when I like – as long as I like getting up before seven. The only snag is that we are still bound down in camp – or supposed to be. A nice little bunch accidently [sic]
[page break]
found themselves in town the other evening. We must have take [sic] the wrong road somewhere. Anyway the town should recover in about a fortnight if it has plenty of rest. The cream is that the C.O. has been speaking of squashing the stand-by as we have been so good – we haven’t it’s just we were broke. If he finds out about the last do he’ll have baby. Still, we want a mascot for the flight.
The war seems to have been doing quite well without my help lately and it leads me to wonder if Bro. G. has donned the old battle dress again and got stuck in. Either that or they have finally incorporated Archie into the armed forces of the Crown. As long as they leave a little
[page break]
bit of the war for me when the weather clears I have no objection to this outside assistance.
I am – strange how one’s character alters – glad to hear Charlie is doing well at his job. The sooner he gets through his course the sooner will he see these lovely foreign countries. If the rest of the mob are doing as well for themselves there should be quite a nice little farewell party pretty soon.
As this letter is just a weeny bit overdue I think I’ll wrap up. Remember me to the rest of the herbs.
All the best.

My dear Phyl.
Just a hellishly hurried note to thank you for your letter & the one from Pepys which I’m enclosing and for the 10/- note. Actually Len did want to square up but I said no as it was my treat and anyway I’d got £14 refund on Income Tax and wanted to celebrate. Then you go & do this and I told you to forget about any so called debts. I’ve never known anyone so gracious as you, my dear, & Con says so too, but of course I’m not letting you pay for the flicks & I dar’nt [sic] put the 10/- in here as I don’t know if we’re censored so I’ll hang on to it & I’ll be able to argue much better when I see you next. You are a wonderful soul & I do so enjoy blowing in so prepare for an argument next time.
Is’nt [sic] Pepys’ letter wizard & I do think he does most things but talk. Con told me in her last letter of his exploits. He’s a real phishy.
I’ve collected a Cockney, a Scotsman, a Northumberland man & a Yorkshireman for my crew so we should be a good crowd. They’re all good blokes. We’re flying or shall fly what I thought & might take part in the wars if the Roses later! Good show.
Heaps of love All the best

7th. March 1943.
My dear Phyl,
Heaps of thanks for your letter and please don’t worry about not being in when I blew in that week end. It was absolutely my own fault I ought to have let you know. It was a bit awkward though because I rather expected to go to Hatfield to hear the recording of our world famous [indecipherable word]. So I kind of blew in on spec and rather expected to find Pip and Len there or no one as you’d gone out. I wanted to squeeze a couple of minutes to blow in to see you so I could say howdy on the Monday but had a date with Williamson for a pint at the Clavendon, Hammersmith and left it a bit late & had to move some to catch the 4 o’clock train. Anyway I don’t think they like too many visitors at Joe’s do they? All this seems a bit laborious – I hope you’ve waded this far?
I am sorry to hear that you’ve had ‘flu what rotten luck. Do hope you did’nt [sic] feel too rotten and that someone came to look after you. Mouldy being ill on one’s own. I do wish you
[page break]
could have gone down to Con’s it would have done you good. I feel different after a couple of good deep breaths of that wizard sea air. Must be wizard there just now in the recent good weather. Bless her.
I’ve won a bike, on loan, from the ‘management’ so have been getting pretty fit exploring the local pubs, and doing a spot of bokeing at the local main line. Got invited up into the local signal box last week. Rather more complicated than Oakham as there are four tracks and different types of bells, so hav’nt [sic] done any work – yet! The country round here is very like Caythorpe or Rutland – rather nice really. All the birds seem to be getting their best suits on to upset the hearts of the feathered females round here. A Yellow Hammer shot across the road in front of me the other day and I really thought someone had thrown a Gold Flake cigarette packet at me. Then he did a wizard three pointer onto a particularly bouncy branch and shouted at me!
We went into Stafford to a Concert by the Bournemouth Philharmonic Orchestra. The soloist was Harold Fairhurst (violin) who played a Concerto by Bach. Anyway here’s the programme. They made a darned good job of the 6th which is I think quite my favourite. There’s such a wonderful melody in the first movement.
We’ve done a spot of flying and the Wimpey is living well up to my expectations. We’ve also worn some leather flying clothing. Marvellous stuff with a grand collar – grand for an open car! Also we put up a good show at bale out practice we got out in 25 Secs on our emergency bale out!
Well cheers for the present do hope you feel better?
All the best possible
Tons of love. Dec.

W. 12 5/43. Flying this morning – dual, with screens & another pupil who halved the flying with me. Coped successfully though the Halifax II is rather heavier, higher of the ground and floats a longer than the Whimpey. Had the afternoon off. Went for a pint into the village with Lighton.
Th. 13 5/43. Ground school – lectures. Spot of beer in the Mess – quite a cheery do. Letter from Con.
F. 14 5/43. Went over to Wickenby [sic] (No. 12 Sqdn.)

S. 15 5/43. Ground school all day, also duty offices. Some of the Sgts in 7 course tried to do a spot of fooling about so of course they were sat on. Clay pidgeon shooting in afternoon also kite hoisting (by Very pistol) for use in a dingy. Letter from Mrs Branston – also from Con, bless her, yesterday. Wrote to Geoff.
Sun. 16 5/43. Local map reading. Flew to Oakham, Nottingham (found Auntie Edith’s House) & to Caythorpe (for the Branston’s). good shout. P.F.F demonstration in the evening. Good pub call on the way. Wrote to Con & Auntie E.
M. 17 5/43. Ground school & link. Wrote to Uncle Billy.

W. 19 5/43. Ground school. Cheque etc to Con.
Th. 20 5/43. More map reading to Henley on Thames this time to find B’Aimers girl’s place of work. Good practice & his map reading has improved. Lovely weather. Borrowed a bike and went to East Ferry for an odd pint or so. Good evening.

T. 25 5/43. Letter from Con. Spot of gro0und Sch.
W. 26 5/43. They’re still not ready for us in the Lancaster Flight but we’re finished with lectures after today. wondered if we could get tomorrow off but we’re to do dingy. Got roped in for a spot of beer in the CO.’s party. Most uncouth bloke in front of his wife – left party as soon as I could.
Th. 27 5/43. Dingy drill this morning. Went to Gainsboro’ [Gainsborough] with Lighton re cycles. His luck in spite of a copper who does some up in his spare time. He was too expensive.

LIZ’S SERVICE HISTORY
The large brown document is a photocopy of Liz’s RAF FORM 543-AIRMAN’s RECORD OF SERVICE which was the standard administrative document used for Air Force personnel. The original is still held in RAF archives.
It details the various postings Liz undertook, with dates and operational squadrons/units, and detailed below are notes on each of these where available from RAF and other sources. It also shows promotions up to Leading Aircraft Woman in Oct 1944.
At the time of volunteering and joining up to Belfast Reserve on 8th Jan 1942, next of kin is Liz’s father, address Carnkenny, Ardstraw, Newtonstuart, County Tyrone. Liz is recorded as being 5 feet 4 inches tall, with 33 inch chest (presumably this information needed for uniform measurements!!!), brown hair, blue eyes and fair complexion.
The document also shows the fictitious date of birth Liz gave, 4th August 1923, making her out to be 13 months older than she really was. Throughout her service Liz is recorded as being of “very good” character!
8-1-1942 Joined Belfast Reserve, as ACW 2
28-1-1942 Transferred to Gloucester.
This seems to have been the start point for kitting out trainees prior to moving on to barrage balloon training at Morecombe. See attached article about Joyce Ashdown, who started at Gloucester and trained at Morecombe for 6 weeks from January 1942.
5-3-1942 Joined Morecombe Barrage Balloons, for training
4-6-1942 Moved to 970 Balloon Squadron.
I’ve not been able to trace exact location. See article by Jean Shepherd, “Memories of a Balloon Operator”, who was not based in the same area as Liz but whose experiences may have been similar.
13-4-1943 Moved to 30 Operations Training Unit.
I believe this was based at Hixon, near Lichfield, Staffordshire, and was used for training Wellington bomber crews in night bombing, and for operations. Attached is an extract from the “Operations Record Book” for March 1943, just before Liz’s arrival, and indicates plenty of social activity, and 2800 people based there. There are good pictures on the internet, google RAF Hixon.
[page break]
15-7-1943 Moved to 12 Squadron of T.T. (Technical Training)
This was at Wickenby, near Langworth, Lincolnshire, and was an operational Lancaster base, versions BI and BIII. There is a Memorial Museum at the airfield, and a stone memorial to the 1080 lives lost from personnel based there 1942-1945.
Attached is an article about flight engineer Wally Smith and his Lancaster and related crew members. He flew 30 missions between May-October 1943, and Liz was there July-November 1943. One of the crew referred to, Peter Bemrose, was shot down and became a prisoner of war, and spent some time in one of the same camps (Stalag IVB) as Brian’s father.
In November 1943, just prior to Liz moving, part of 12 Squadron was expanded to become 626 Squadron.
18-11-1943 Moved to 1657 Conversion Unit
This was at Stradishall, Suffolk, with Lancasters Mark I and Mark III and Stirlings. Conversion units were used to train/convert existing medium bomber crews to operate heavy bombers, prior to their posting to Operational Training Units to gain experience before postings to operational Squadrons.
17-4-1944 Moved to 1654 Conversion Unit
This was at Wigsley, Nottinghamshire. See the book “First Wave”, a biography of Reg Payne, pages 97/98/99 when he was at Wigsley in Sept 1943 (before Liz’s time) and summarising his first experience of Lancasters.
13-9-1945 Moved to 14 Base
25-10-1945 Moved to Wickenby
2-1-1946 Moved to AAEE Boscombe Down
16-4-1946 105 PDC Release
11-6-1946 Left Service

Staffs. 24.11.42
Dear David,
I'me [sic] back I this cold island again, have been for some time now, so am dropping you a line to find out if you are anywhere in this neighbourhood. If you are anywhere in range I might be able to wangle a machine & come & look you up.
They eventually grabbed me for the training racket, I've just been promoted C.F.I. cant get back to operations at any price. I put in a written application asking to get on any heavy squadron, either here or overseas but no luck, they say I'll be able to get back in the Spring.
I've managed to do two of the big raids since returning. They are an absolute revelation after our old maximum efforts of about 30 aircraft.
What are you doing now David? Had a letter from Margôt the other day in which she said you were doing something at Group. How is Joyce? Please remember me to her. I'll have to close this now & do a spot of work. Drop me a line when you have time,
Cheerio
