Christmas has always been spent by my family in the good old traditional way.
The relating of cards and sending of greeting to friends near and far before the day and the reunion of a happy circle of friends whom the festive day itself.
For years we gathered together the same faces with additions but never losses then one Christmas one face was missing one place empty.
Happy round the fire we’re sitting
Yet there is one empty chair
And our heart do dwell a moment
On the loved one who’s not there
Mill our hearts aren’t sad and lonely
Tho his place can ne’er be filled
For on earth he was gods soldier
And he went when e’er he willed
Sometime somewhere we’ll meet again
And we know when that day
We shall find him just as happy
As the time he went away

My Dad
Now standing on a slippery slope
Getting steeper all the time,
I wonder where the years have gone
Young days that once were mine.
The photo books show laughing kids
All grown and gone away,
Dogs and ponies dearly loved
Who've sadly had their day.
The steel machines which brought such joy
Have vanished into rust,
And all the flowers that once were mine
Will soon be turned to dust.
Colds icy finger beckons
But one wish I've always had
Whilst passing to oblivion
I get one moment with my dad.

[underlined] To My Wife and Sweetheart. [/underlined]
With these flowers take all my love,
And my devoted heart.
May they help the future to prove
Our love will never cast.
Even this finest flower cannot show
the love I feel for you.
But darling as in years we grow
May our love be true
Enjoy yourself tonight my sweet
and leave me here to yearn
for your love and kisses
on your safe return.
Yours. love John.

Dear Dorie,
I am awfully sorry I have not wrote before, I have kept promising you I would write but I’m afraid I’ve not kept it. Even now I do not know what to write about. I hope you are well & still enjoying life such as it is. I myself [deleted] I [/deleted] am properly fed up. For 3 weeks I have not had any pay thanks to some darned fool in the pay account section but there, I still have it to come, & I’ll get drunk as Hell when I do get it. I wanted to send you a card for your birthday but could not do so. So even if it is late, let me wish you many happy returns on the day.
[page break]
2.
I am enclosing a little bit of poetry which I have made up (I’m getting quite clever don’t you think) it could be improved upon, but it’s good enough for me. Well Dorie, I think I have said all for now but [underline] will [/underline] write to you again sometime so [undecipherable] Fred xxxxxxxxxxx
[page break]
[underline] Tail-End Tommy [/underline]
As I sit in my turret, so small & compact.
Searching the sky in case we’re attacked.
My thoughts sometimes take me to a place far away
My home, & my people & bright sunny days.
Those days are gone, there’s a war to be won
Instead of a pen, I depend on my guns.
They’re life to me & my pals up there,
We’re out to conquer,-not- to despair.
For hours + hours; years it seems
Turning, + dodging searchlight beams.
The rear of the engines is company for me.
As we fly through the night over Germany.
The target is reached, we circle around,
The flak is terrific, from those guns on the ground.
Our pilot is fearless, he commences his run
The bomb aimer is tensed to destroy the Hun.
There in the tail as I’m watching [inserted] the [/inserted] fun,
My fingers are longing to fire my gun
Each time I come over I feel the same
Looking down there at a vast sea of flame
Our bombs are all gone, our mission accomplished
In tomorrow’s news, the requests will be published
“All our aircraft have safely returned”
I was a spectator, while Germany burned.

The Last Flight
Did He feel the touch of fate
upon his shoulder, light as breath –
on that night when he went to
[indecipherable] a rendezvous with death?
As He rose into the darkness,
did He feel in brain [symbol] bone –
He was going on a journey
out [deleted] in [/deleted] to the great unknown?
Did He have a strange foreboding
that He would not see again –
the England that He loved so well
the rolling road the winding lane? He cannot tell But this we know
of that nights work he did his share Brave deeds were done [symbol]
a battle fought, [symbol] He was there.
Yes He was there.
[page break]
The Confirmation
He is not dead. He could not die so young he was [symbol] gay.
So gallant [symbol] so brave a soul could never pass away…
[symbol] though I cannot see his face
I know He walks with me – in the happy freedom of his immortality.
Though the dark [symbol] lonely mages of my secret grief – He has led to by the hand [symbol] I have found relief – in the strange unravelling of death’s [indecipherable] mystery: the confirmation of my faith in love’s supremacy.

Johnnie Holden - killed June 1944. Collected poems of WB Yates'
When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;
How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
[page break]
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;
And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

[underlined] A. W/OP’s LAMENT [/underlined]
A YOUNG W/OP AG lay dying
At the end of a bright summer day
His comrades were gathered around him
To carry the fragments away
His Kite had piled on his wishbone
The Vickers were wrapped round his head
To those who had gathered around him
It was plain that he soon would be dead
He spat out a valve and a gasket.
And stirred in the sump where he lay
And then to his wondering comrades
These last parting works he did say
Take the manifold out of my larynx
The butterfly valve from my neck
Remove from my Kidneys the conrods
Theres plenty of good parts in this WRECK
Take the piston rings out of my stomach
The sparking plugs out of my brain
Remove from my Liver the crankshaft.
And assemble the engine again
Take the longeron out of my backbone
The turnbuckle out of my ear
From the small of my back take the rudder
Theres all of your aeroplane here
I’ll be riding a cloud in the morning
No engine before me to cuss
Take the lead from your feet and get busy
Theres another damn fool wants this bus. AR.

An American Invitation
For a very special celebration
They made we WAAFS feel
Quite feminine on this occasion
By pinning a beautiful rose-glorious petals
Onto our lapels
The Huge Hanger
Built to house Forts and Liberators
Was crowded with men
Oh don’t tell me
They’ll be chasing us again!
One soon whispered in my ear
I hope I don’t have to spend the night
Avoiding another American “dear”.
They were all standing
Silently in awe
What were they waiting for?
Gazing at the band
The largest I’d ever seen
Conducted by a bespectacled man in military dress
Am I in a dream?
A small man not much bigger than me
Making seemingly effortless music
Dancing
[deleted] Glee
Awe
Privileged [/deleted]

AIR RAID
A flame, a glorious golden strand,
Lit by some ethereal hand,
And o’er the gathering mists held high,
Like a fiery sword in the sunset sky.
The purple shadows softly crept,
The jewels of night their vigil kept,
And gently over this fair land,
Sweet sleep and peace reigned hand in hand.
But peace was just an idle dream,
For suddenly a piercing scream,
Sickening thuds and droning wings,
Shatter the dream with evil things.
Evil things wrought by evil mankind.
To kill and maim the body and mind,
And hells let loose with all its fire
With innocent lives …. make a funeral pyre.
The mantle of night is torn with moans
Of anguished human cries and groans
But let other lands tremble and shudder with fright,
And say freedom is dead
Though dark is the night we know that the dawn, victory’s sword in hand
Will rise triumphant over our dear land
We know that the dawn
Victory’s sword in hand
Will rise triumphant
Over our dear land

Through the years you are remembered
Here, where harvests of golden corn are gathered
No swords of war now but ploughshares instead
The Pine trees that your Lancaster scythed through still stand sentinel
Over these peaceful fields where your lifeblood was shed
OR
You are remembered here-where now harvests of golden grain are gathered
Where war swords have been beaten into peaceful ploughshares instead
And the Pine trees still stand silent sentinels
Over these fields where your young lifeblood was shed
In their Lancaster they had bravely battled with Berlin’s fighters and flak
Skipper Proudfoot and his young crew on their 23rd Op
Homing to Waltham, through cloud dense and low
Crashed by the Pines and suffered and died
On Hatcliffe Top
The years have flown by but you are remembered
Here where rich bounties are spread
And the trees of Pine stand sentinel
Over peaceful fields where young lifeblood was shed
Shed in the hope that there would be
Lasting peace for humanity
Pause by this stone and before you go
Remember
The debt to brave Bomber Command Aircrews
That we will forever owe
ALTERNATE VERSE
Now, no reaper of death to take youth in its prime
You are remembered here, where nature’s rich bounties are spread
And where the trees of pine still stand silent sentinel
Over the peaceful fields where your young lifeblood was shed

Is it true what they tell me?
Is it true what they have done?
Taken 199 Squadron
The pride and joy of Group One
Taken and had you converted
(Not the usual way I mean)
Though you’re not as black as your painted
You are too far gone to redeem!
So they’ve had you converted to Stirlings
You are now Stirling by plane and by name
And you’re leaving your Wimpey’s behind you
And ‘whimpering’ so at the shame
It was a shame to convert you from Wimpey’s
After all you have done for Group One
After all the ‘honour’ you’ve brought them
(After all four engines are better than none!)
So here’s to you Stirling your 199’s name
Here’s to the deeds you will do and have done
Here’s to you keeping your glorious name
As the booziest Squadron Group One!

Who knows?
Life’s golden chalice
Which now we hold so tight
May, ere another night
Fall from fingertips
And crash to pieces
Ere our lips
Can taste again
The happiness that glows
When Youth’s love flows
We, who so much give
Tonight
Our birthright
Is to LIVE!!!
Come Tom, Dick and Jack
Fly out of that flack
There’s waiting for you
The eggs and the bacon
And the hearts of the WAFFS
At the home station

J for Johnny are in disgrace
J for Johnny hide their face
The ground crew give them dirty looks
J for Johnny have ‘blotched’ their books
J for Johnny full of tricks
Went in too low to drop their ‘sticks’
Kite and crew flew upside down
The reason for the ground crew’s frown?
When they topsy turvy flew
Over went the Elson too!!
