Description
An account of the resource
59 items. The collection concerns the wartime career of Flight Sergeant Herbert Frederick O'Hara (1917 – 1968, 655736, 195482 Royal Air Force). Herbert O'Hara served on 12 Squadron at RAF Wickenby between February and May 1944. His aircraft was shot down over France in May 1944 and he evaded until he was liberated in September 1944. He was then commissioned. The collection contains service records and two logbooks, notification of him missing as well as correspondence from and photographs of French people who helped him evade. In addition there is an account of travelling across the Atlantic for flying training in Florida as well as notes from his aircrew officers course at RAF Credenhill. Finally there are a number of target and reconnaissance photographs and six paintings.
The collection has been loaned to the IBCC Digital Archive for digitisation by Brian O'Hara and catalogued by Nigel Huckins and IBCC staff.

My Dearest
I bet you have been wondering what has been happening this last week. Well I dont [sic] quite know myself yet. I have been to 5 stations in 4 days so you can guess I am fed up with it all.
However I have been crewed up this morning & the Skipper of our crew is the Flight Commander. Flying Officer [underlined] Stammers [/underlined] (no relation to Frank) All the crew that I have met yet seem very nice blokes. In fact all the Squadron are good chaps
Of course I cant [sic] give you any written details of anything but I think it will be extremely interesting here when we get settled in.
Still I hope to be seeing you on Tuesday so I will tell you all about it then.
All my love
Yours Ian.

My Dearest
Just another line or two to tell you that I am (O.K. but frozen. Every where [sic] & things around here is ice bound: we have had two days now. Tonight we are holding a dance & Cabaret in the mess as a sort of House warming party most of the fellows have invited girls up from Lincoln. I wish you were coming, it would then be quite enjoyable then.
I [smudged] was [/smudged] expecting a letter from you today. I hope my parcel of laundry arrives tomorrow or I shall miss the laundry here again. Have you seen any more of Bert? Dont [sic] forget to let me have his address will you. I will write him occasionally anyway. Last night I wrote to Rex. It is getting tim [sic][time] the estate was cleared up now, and in any case I would like to know what is going on & what is happening about the Garage Rent
[page break]
The boys in the billet have just been having short discussion on "Morals in war time" The Canadians have a very poor opinion of the morals of English women. (So have the Americans) It is fairly obvious that they (morals) have certainly gone to the dogs during the [corrected] war [/corrected] It will take a long [corrected] while [/corrected] after to get normal again.
Well darling I must close now with all my love for you & the Boys.
All yours

Thanks for the parcel & leter [sic] which I received yesterday (also the Wine). The delay was at this end & the Waaf [sic] officer who is in charge of the Roy’ [sic] [Royal] Mail Dept [Department] had gone on leave without appointing a deputy. She was recalled yesterday & hauled over the Coals. I contributed to the agony by reporting my delay etc.
Thanks again for the Pills wallet and Cig case not forgetting the onion too I am looking forward to my supper tonight. We are still quite busy here yet. I have not yet done any Cross Country flying may do a short trip tomorrow though. We are likely to pass near Delamaine on one of our trips but as I have

The Sq [Squadron] /Leader for a pilot I doubt if I can get him to “Woble [sic] his wings” Still we will see what we can do when the time comes.
The weather here at the moment is mild here but mainly Misty which rather spoils local flying. The other chaps have come back off leave in the billet so things will be a bit more [corrected] cheerfull [/corrected] although they are not too cheerful as you may guess.
I was pleased to hear that the boys were OK & of course yourself. That Cold cure is really a preventative. It is “MIDGLEY’S ANTI-GRIPPE” sold by Taylors or Timothy Whites. Excellent stuff
Touching would [sic] my [indecipherable] is better so I shall not have to take any pills for a bit I hope. Well dearest I will close now

[Two words missing]
Many thanks for your letter today. The post seems all to cock because you should have had my letter by the time you wrote to me. I am sorry about that note but I hadnt [sic] heard a word from you and I had written twice as well as the Card from Lincoln.
I do wish you would not worry about flying. What flying I do is negligible & at the present Rate of things I shall not be doing any serious flying by this time next year.
The Squadron leader who was my skipper has today been posted and that means our crew are at a loose end again As I did not like the chap I am pleased but as far as flying is concerned it will mean more delays. Still if John got back to the original Skipper +/0 Stammers I shall be [corrected] quite [/corrected] happy as he is reckoned to [deleted] By [/deleted] be the best pilot on the Station
I bet poor Sqd [sic] [corrected] Rist [/corrected] felt Rotten when he went back let me have his address & I will write to him. You must occasionally see Mr Turner, because he has always been decent to you
Yester [missing] d [/missing]ay I received a letter from Rex who tells me that he has heard that the Lawyer has now died on us so that is going to delay things again. He was going to Wyrley this weekend I think anyway I can’t get away now I must try to get over there during my January leave. There is plenty of time for that though yet
Tomorrow is Pay day. & am already I am broke I dont [sic] know how much I have to come but I hope it is Plenty. Have you received that extra 17/6 yet?? If not let me know. I will send you that £1 too.
Well dearest I must close now but I am missing you like hell tonight

Dearest,
Many thanks for your [sic] letter this morning. I must say I dont [sic] like the news in it. & I am not taking it either I have been to see the Pardre [sic] tonight who seems to think I have a good chance of getting at least half of it back. He wants to know what your weekly allowane [sic] is (Total) & what commitments you have. I.E. [page break]
me know immediately by return. In the mean time you might write to the War Service Grant Dept? or whatever it is asking why you should suffer this reduction as you still have the same expenses etc. just to see what they say.
Oh! And another thing I only received £4-16-0 for a months [sic] money so I have to go to Binbrook to see about that too
I am utterly and thoroughly disgusted with the whole Bloody Show.

[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
Swines [sic] working in [corrected] factories [/corrected] etc can have their liberty safety & home life; and on top of that get paid for it too whereas mugs like me the more we do the less we get.
The Bloody Govt [sic][Government] Pay a pilot 13/6 a day then take 3/= day back income tax. The trouble is they still get mugs to do [underlined] it [/underlined]
It is time the papers got the Right end of the stick and less of the blarney about “What our [underlined] Wonderful [/underlined] Airforce is doing

[corrected] Today [/corrected] here was an [corrected] example [/corrected] There is a Sergeant Pilot who has finished his operational flying and is due for a rest up.
He was [corrected] moaning [/corrected] like hell about his pay but within half an hour he was playing hell with the C.O because he could not get him any more operational flying. What can you do when chaps are as keen as that? Well dearest I hope I have not moaned too much but in any case Ill [sic] see you don’t loose [sic]

by it. Actually there is a net gain of 4d a day on our joint income but with my increased expences [sic] I am about a [underlined] Shilling a day [/underlined] down to what I was as an L.A.C.
I bought another Pair of Pyjamas yesterday so if you get any coupons dont [sic] get any for me use the coupons on yourself & kids.
I will write to Bert over the weekend but I dont [sic] feel like writing to anyone at the moment, now How are the boys?
[page break]
Bless em! I have not had a chance to get into Lincoln yet. I will see what I can do when I get a chance.

Darling,
Many thanks for your letter to hand this morning, but why enclose the Xmas card Envelope. I am going to send it back in it. I conclude from the Post frank [deleted] mark [/deleted] that it was from Joan. The weather has been just fog here for the last 3 days but today it has cleared up and we have been up for 1 hr (over Skegness)
I have got to go to our plane (K is the letter) this afternoon & check over one or two little jobs. So I am snatching a few moments to get this off to you. A week tonight I hope to be on my way home. That will be good. I am afraid I shall have to have a day at Wyrley though darling as much as I don’t want to. I really don’t [sic] know what to do about the car? It is quite a problem. I feel that if I could get a good price, I would sell the damned thing
[page break]
By the way when are you going to answer my query Re- your allowance That is the allowance for you and the two boys. Independent of that [underlined] 17/6 [/underlined] Also the form that you have should be filled up by me I think
I am enclosing this newspaper cutting for your guidance.
Well beloved, heres [sic] all my love for Ever & Ever
Just yours
Ian

28th Dec 1942.
My Darling,
If ever you get this note one of two things will have happened. I will either not be alive or will be a prisoner of war. In either case darling I shall be leaving you a great responsibility with our two lads, but I know that you will always do your best for them. Please dont [sic] coddle them. Many times they will do things that make you fear for them & their safety, but if they have the confidence to carry out there [sic] exploit dont [sic] try to hinder them You must encourage them to be self reliant.
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
If I should not come out of this war alive I would like them to complete [corrected] their [/corrected] vocational training then travel abroad if possible, & doing anything if necessary for say two, or 3 years. They will in that way gather a wealth of experience and get an outlook on life that will get them anywhere. Again dont [sic] forget to impress them that they will get nothing without working for it & that they will only get out of life what they put in it.
In conclusion dearest all I have ever done & do is for you & the boys although I have many times annoyed, disappointed & let you down.
I have always loved you & always will
Cheerio dearest
Yours Ian.

22. January 1943.
My Dearest,
Many thanks for your letters of [deleted] last [/deleted] yesterday & today. It is distressing to hear about David again, but please wire me if he gets much worse. I dont [sic] like asking for time off but my boys & you come first in cases like this
We are certainly having a rough time of it lately with Drs & what not.
I am feeling terribly fed up too I could do with a real good holiday again. The weather at the moment is enough to give any body the gripes apart from anything else. Nearly everybody has gone out of camp tonight & it is pouring with rain. This place is no health resort at the best of times so you can imagine what it is like now
[page break]

A few nights ago I was in Lincoln & went to the pictures to see “BAMBI” It is a beautiful film but it is not a film for very young kids The picture was almost stolen by the rabbit “Thumper”.
Well my love I must close now. I do hope darling that David is soon better for your sake.
I do wish I were with you
All my love
& keep your Pecker up
Yours Ever
Ian

My Darling,
Many thanks for your nice letter received yesterday. It was the nicest letter I have received [deleted] yet [/deleted] for a very long [smudged] while [/smudged]. I am glad to hear that those people are nice & that they are company for you. It will be a change any way to get a bit of Social [sic] life at Norley.
I have my old driving licence here so I will attend to that. Also I would be glad if you could see A Wharburton because I believe that Ghents [sic] are taking over from yesterday the 8th
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
I am trying to write this under great difficulties. Everybody in the billet is trying to jabber at once & make toast etc etc.
I bet D did enjoy himself [sic] How is it that Norah is unattached? What is wrong with her? She seems to be attractive enough or used to anyway.
[underlined] 10th [/underlined]
I had to pack this up last night. There was too much of a hullaballoo. (Is that how it is sppelled).[sic]
Well let me thank you for the Pullover, we have had a few cold days again so it has been most [deleted] y [/deleted] useful [corrected].
It has already been to the South atlantic [sic] coast of France. Lorient
That was a terrible raid for the folks on the ground.

[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
but it was easy enough for us.
I hate to think of the poor Frenchies who were living there.
I also got your note of the 8th today too. I am looking forward to this leave & all being well I should be home on Tuesday 16 [underlined] th [/underlined] [sic] There is a slight 'possibility' of the leave being postponed but I should know in good enough time to let you know too.
Well my darling I must close now with all my love to you and the boys
Ever yours only
Ian

My Dearest,
Just a line or two in haste. I have only just recently got up. We went to Nuremburgh last night, and it was a long eventful trip (for which we were really duly thankful) except one of our engines went unservicable [sic] just as we were leaving Germany & we came back quite comfortably on 3 engines. It is very comforting to know that if anything happens to 1 engine you can still cope. It was quite a minor defect & can be remedied in ½ hr or so.
You were slightly out about [undecipherable] but I did it last night in school
Also you will be pleased to here [sic] that I have been placed in charge of all the other Flight Engineers on the Station This is one step [underlined] nearer [/underlined]
Poor old Tony! He is a love of course David is older & has other interests now, and yet he doesnt [sic] understand.
Well my love, this is about the lot for now so Ill close with all my love for you & the Boys. I am missing you darling.
Yours always
Ian.

My Darling
Just a line to enclose with D's card I wish I were coming too really Last night as you probably know from the papers we were at Hamburgh. [sic] It was quite a good show too. My Darling
Many thanks for your short note Received to day [sic]. Well I have now not operated for two nights & I dont [sic] think I shall be operating tomorrow either. The last op was Stuttgart. It was quite good too. We have had about six new crews in so that should relieve the pressure a bit anyway
I have one disappointment for you & that is my leave has been put back into April [corrected] about [/corrected] the 9th I think.
I have heard from Rex again. He told me that he had been to Gt Wyrley & had been chasing the Lawyers. Apparently there is some hitch with the Inland Revenue people, They apparently want some more duties.
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
Poor old Bert is still getting trouble isnt [sic] he [deleted] re [/deleted]
I feel terribly fed up at times. That is one reason why I dont [sic] mind a lot of “ops” because the time just flies & one has no time to reflect. At times like this one at least I get awfully homesick.
Last night our crew went to Lincoln, The Skipper has his wife & daughter up for 3 days and I met them last night I felt miserable after wards though I wished you were here.
Still by my next leave should have finished my tour of ops & we can do something then to celebrate
If I can I shall get my
[page break]
[inserted] 3 [/inserted]
11 remaining trips in about 20 days then I shall come on leave then. What will happen afterwards I dont [sic] know. Where they will send me God knows. I think I might try to get transferred to Ferry Command. I dont [sic] fancy instructing anyway
I am pleased the boys are keeping well. It seems funny to have you talking about Davids [sic] School Clothes. Also I hope you have not been too upset by having your tooth out as you say you are doing tomorrow
Well my love Ill close now & see what is for supper
All my Love
Always yours

Sir,
During a recent discussion, with a friend of mine from Dunholme, concerning the possibility of getting back on to operational flying, he advised me to write to you.
I am an air gunner. I completed my second tour of operations on the 20th December 1943. I have, since that date, remained on this station. The normal rest period is about six months and since four months have already elapsed since the completion of my tour, I should very much appreciate any advice that you could give me as to the possibility of returning to active flying duties.
I am Sir,
Yours obedient Servant

WICKENBY
Nr. LINCOLN
1.1.45.
Dear Mother,
I’ve been intending to write you such a letter as this for some weeks, & yet I don’t seem to have been able to get around to it…………… & after all it’s not a pleasant letter to write. The strange part about it is that in my first few operations, when I had so little confidence & anything could have happened, there was no letter for you – but now, with the experience of 5 operations behind me, I feel that I ought to get started. I suppose the reason is that so many of the boys are getting lost on operations, and it would be foolish of me to dismiss the dangers as
[page break]
Insignificant.
I suppose you’ll be glad to know that I am happier here at Wickenby than I was when I first arrived. The fellows here are a fine lot & and the boys that fly along with me are six of the best. In addition, I like my job very much. The navigation we knew at Port Elizabeth, Millom & Peplow was nothing compared with that which we know here, & these long trips into the enemy frontiers give one a feeling of achievement and satisfaction. In addition, we know we know that we are contributing in a most direct manner to the defeat of the enemy & the saving of thousands of lives. The methods are unpleasant, as we know from our own experience, but the end must justify the means.
If anything should occur to make it impossible for me to come home again, I hope you will
[page break]
remember your faith in God’s unfailing judgement, & bear the blow as a brave mother should. You will know that you, at least, did everything you could to make my life enjoyable, worthwhile & successful – and you can never doubt how I appreciate you[sic] help and your continued sacrifice under the greatest difficulties. I might have missed the benefits which God has bestowed on me, had it not been for your endeavours & example, & thank God & you for all I have and am at this moment. Don’t forget this … ever.
Please give my love to Ken & Beryl (Long Liv Viv). I hope Ken will soon be back with you & wish him every success & good
[page break]
Fortune - & my own share too.
To Beryl I can only say that she has made a good start in life &, following her mother’s example, she can’t go wrong. I am sure she will be a great comfort to you & help make you happy, as I want you to be.
I hope you’ll write to my friends again – as you used to so often when I was busy- & please send Jeanie a few lines. She’s no ordinary girl, but a splendid type that the difficulties & hardships of this life have knocked into splendid shape. Your worries were entirely groundless & she was nothing to me but a grand girl I could not help admiring. We got on very well together.
Here's to them all, & my love to you and all at home
Your loving son,
George

Letter from Edmond Henry, Priest of Montigny-Ie-Guesdier dated 10th March 1946 to Denzil Ede W.Rl.
member number 389 relating to the loss of 626 squadron Lancaster UM - S Sugar 2 (EE148) on 3/4 May 1944
Dear sir,
After the events that took place in May 1944 on the territory of my parish, I must frankly admit that
I had been waiting, not without some impatience, for a letter such as yours, either asking me for
details of the great misfortune that befell your comrades or to thank the people of Montigny and the
surrounding area for their devotion to the allies' cause and particularly for the courage that they
showed at that time.
I had been in the 'Resistance' since 1941 and I always fought the Germans with all my strength; with
some of my comrades, I sought to supply the Allies with information on German troop movements, and we sent this information by radio or carrier pigeon. Several times I had occasion to take in English or American airmen.
On the night of 3/4 May 1944 all was quiet in Montigny, and there was no reason to anticipate any
trouble, when at one 0' clock in the morning we were wrenched out of our sleep by a dreadful din, at the same time a red ball streaked across the sky to crash a few seconds later about 800 yards from the village.
There was no possible doubt about it, an aircraft probably caught by a burst of machine gun fire had
just crashed down in flames. What nationality was the aircraft? If it was English, swift action was
needed to conceal any airmen who had managed to escape from the German search parties. I just took time to get dressed and I was on the spot a few minutes later together with many of my comrades. We could see from the size of the aircraft that it was a bomber, and an allied bomber, since its tricolour rounders could be seen shining in the flames. In falling the bomber had fallen into four pieces; there was the fuselage with one wing, then a little further on, the tail, still further a wing, and finally came an engine.
When we reached the spot, the fuselage and tail were a blazing torch. We had to very careful when
approaching as the heat was causing bullets to go off on all sides. On leaving the Village, we thought we had seen some parachutes in the glow of the fire; I therefore organised a few patrols in order to find them and bring them help. Unfortunately, we discovered nothing. When day had dawned, the bodies of the seven crew members were discovered. Three in the front of the aircraft, probably the pilot, navigator, and flight engineer, and the other four in the vicinity of the aircraft.
Those were the brutal facts. Now here is how a little French village, guided by its priest, paid tribute
to seven allied airmen who had fallen on French soil in the fight against the Boches.
I decided on my personal responsibility to take the bodies to the town hall. The occupation authorities had formally forbidden touching anything before they arrived at the scene of the disaster. No
1WR = Wickenby Register. Denzil Ede was a close friend of Sergeant Noel Hatton who was killed during the crash. They were both navigators with 626 squadron and on their first operation. However, Denzil survived it but Noel didn't. Their base was at Wickenby. Denzil went on to be a founder member of the Wickenby Register, dedicated to preserving the memory of 626 squadron airmen. He wrote to the village of Montigny-le-Guesdier where his friend, Noel, was buried after the war to find out more about his fate. This is the remarkable reply he received from the parish priest.
[page break]
matter, I listened only to my own conscience and patriotism and detailed one of mycomrades, a farmer, to go and find a car, in which the bodies were carried to the town hall.
Then I informed the mayor of what had happened and of the responsibility I had assumed. To begin
with, he criticised the steps I had taken, which he considered dangerous as there might be reprisals,
but in the end he was to agree that I had done the right thing.
A burial permit had then to be obtained. It was granted for the following Saturday. As soon as I
knew this, I got out my bicycle and went off on a little propaganda trip through the region to tell
people when the burial would take place, and to get as many people as possible to come. I had ordered seven coffins, and some of the young people of Montigny had dug graves in the communal cemetery.
Montigny-Ie-Guesdier has 250 inhabitants. Well, there were more than 1000 people at the burial.
Never since I have been here had I seen so many people around. Never has the church been so full. There were people everywhere; at the doors, on the three flights of steps leading up to them, and I have never seen so many flowers in the church. What followed was even finer; it brought tears to everyone's eyes. The seven coffins were carried on the shoulders of twenty-eight young people who I had selected; they were all in, or sympathised with the Resistance.
The church was all draped in black. I had brought out the most beautiful hangings for the occasion.
One of my friends, a neighbouring priest, was at the harmonium, and the young people of the parish sang 'The Office for the Dead' whilst I presided over the service.
As we came out of the church, my comrade played 'God Save the King', the American Anthem and 'the Marseillaise' on the harmonium.
You must not forget that all this took place 4 km from Bray-sur-Seine where Gestapo agents were
permanently stationed.
All the personal items found on the dead men were collected by the British Red Cross.
That, quite simply, is the unhappy story I have undertaken to tell you.
I should be very happy for the British people to learn that it was at Montigny-Ie-Guesdier that its
airmen, killed whilst on a mission, were paid the finest homage. Indeed I am sure that in no other region did allies receive a finer burial during the Occupation.
I should be very happy to know if this information has been of use to you.
In the meantime, I remain,
Yours faithfully,
Edmond Henry,
Priest of Montigny-Ie-Guesdier,
