I think it is their Duty, to undertake to look after and take the People of the Grand Boys who gave their lives for the Country, but it seems as if they would rather help the poor Germans, and all the Brave things our Boys did, are a thing of the Past. It is only us who Loved them So much and miss them [inserted] 3 [/inserted] that always have them in our Hearts.
Well Mrs Jones I hope these wont make you Sad, I only want them to bring a little Comfort to you. I hope you all have a nice [indecipherable word] Holiday. Fine weather and Feel better for the change

In a tender and courageous letter to his parents, written on Sept. 15, 1944, Carl provided an extraordinary insight into what the uncertainty of war was like for a young man.

Darling Mum and Dad,
I have decided to write this letter – which you will receive in the event of my being posted missing or killed on operations over enemy territory.
I must start off by saying, quite definitely, that I am not afraid to die. Like everyone else, I think I feel scared when over the target but the excitement at that time usually nullifies the effect of fear.

Dear Daphne,
I was very glad to read the good news in Mothers letter which arrived yesterday.
I imagine from the time which she was born that you were going across to the home in the early hours of the morning, but still you have bags of compensation for it 7 lbs 14 ozs of it in fact, I hope that you are getting [inserted] on [/inserted] allright, [sic] I don’t know but I suppose that
[page break]
you should be back out again in time to enjoy a Christmas dinner, one thing though I do think you might have been a little more considerate, I mean to say, fancy having to go through [inserted] life [/inserted] having your birthday as close to Christmas as all that!, anyway as R.A.F. slang goes, it was a darned good show.
From Mothers description of her I should imagine that she will show off the new pram to the best advantage, dark hair like your own & blue eyes, & a cry with plenty of go in it, I bet old Kip is pleased
[page break]
I suppose there is no chance of him getting home for a spot of leave is there? I hope that there is.
Well Daphne I will finish hoping that you are feeling O.K., now & that baby gets along well, she certainly seems to have started off on the right foot.
Best of luck, to both of you,
Affectionaly, [sic]
Hugh.
P.S.
On reading this through I find that it reads rather badly in parts, if it strikes you that make allowances when you have considered who wrote it.

Sat.
Dear Mum & Dad,
Many thanks for your letter which I received to-day. Glad to hear you are both quite fit etc. I am quite well & happy. But have quite a lot to tell you. The 1939-45 Star has just been issued. Its a medal for active service during those years. Quite a few of the crews here have received it including my crew & me. For us to get it we have to have been on 'ops' for 2 months or more. So we have got. We wear it under
[page break]
our brevets, its got three colours in perpendicular stripes dark blue, red & light blue. We call it the spam gong.
The other thing I've got to tell you about is very exciting. I've baled out! & made a successful descent by parachute. Mon. night as you know we went to Berlin, Tues. & Wed nights we had off. Thursday we took off at 11.30 p.m. for Frankfurt. We flew down England & turned towards the coast at Reading. As we neared the coast before we new what had happened another Halifax hit us. It sort of side-slipped across the top of us. There was a terrific crunching etc. But Johnny kept control all the time. But it was very hard to fly & we were losing height. Half the tailplane & one rudder
[page break]
was torn off. Two feet of the port wing was ripped off, one of the props. was shattered consequently we only had three engines & they had been knocked about a bit & any minute we expected the rest of the tailplane to fall off. But we held on while we crossed the coast & jettisoned our bombs in the sea. Then we turned back over land again, and Johnny gave orders to 'abandon aircraft'. He said he'd stay a bit & see if he could land it by himself, but if necessary he'd bale out himself. So we clipped on our 'chutes said a little prayer (at least I did) & baled out one after another. We were all a bit nervous, but I was pretty excited myself. Anyway I went out headfirst & was battered & banged about by the slipstream, I turned several somersaults,
[page break]
and dropped several hundred feet. Then there was a colossal jerk as if I'd been torn in half & I knew my 'chute had opened O.K. I jumped at 10,000 ft. but there was no wind hardly & I drifted down, it was a lovely sensation floating down, but it only took me about 7 mins. before I hit the ground with a bit of a thud, my knees buckled up & [inserted] I [/inserted] landed on my [underlined] bum. [/underlined] On the way down I crashed through a tree but luckily didn't stuck [sic] although I did get [deleted] ge [/deleted] a slight scratch across my cheek. I landed in a field. So I rolled my 'chute up slung it over my shoulder & started walking over fields & hedges till I came to a road, after about 2 hrs. walking I came to a small village. I went to house & knocked them up (by this time it was 3 o'clock Friday morning as I baled
[page break]
out about 1 o'clock. They took me in (it was a young man & his wife) & were very good. They wanted to give me a bath, whisky etc. But I had a cup of tea. They rang the nearest R.A.F. 'drome up & gave them all the particulars. The 'drome was only about 10 miles away & someone was sent immediately in a car to pick me up. When I got to the drome I found that Johnny had landed the plane there with Joey still aboard. Jeff & Dick were also there, cars had been sent out to pick them up, then Mick & soon after Jock were brought. They all mad it O.K. I came down nr. Chiddingfold in Surrey, we were all came down within a few miles of each other.
Joey had gone to bale out & somehow got
[page break]
stuck across the exit with his parachute dangling outside, he couldn't let go his hold to pull it back in. It hadn't opened as he hadn't pulled the rip cord. It was still attached to him & he was stretched [sic] across the exit with his shoulders on one side & his feet on the other. Consequently he couldn't move one way or the other & if his parachute had blown open at all the sudden pull would have undoubtably broken his back. So Johnny had no other alternative than to try & land the plane. Well he landed it O.K. & Joey said it was perfect, he wasn't jolted at all. Consequently we all got together at this 'drome in Surrey. We were there until mid-day Friday. Then we left & came back to here by train, in reserved 1st. class coaches which Johnny arranged for us.
[page break]
We got back here about 9.30 Friday night. The Wing Commander was waiting to greeting us & said it was a very good show. He took us all in his car to the mess & got us a slap up supper. Then took us all in his car again to our huts & said we could have to-day off. So thats it. Now we're wondering if Johnny will get a medal for saving the plane & Joey as well, at the risk of his own life. I hope he does. He deserves it. Many other pilots would have lost control of the plane after an impact like that. We were given the once over by the M.O. this morning. Micky is in bed with a cold & a temperature. Jock & Joey have to have a sleeping draught to-night & see him again tomorrow. The rest including me, are quite O.K.
Well thats the story. I'm quite O.K. & ready to
[page break]
fly again.
By the way if you think I'm on ops one night don't worry all the next day for fear I'm not back for if anything went wrong you'd have a telegram the very next morning. So if I'm on ops. one night & you've had no telegram or anything by 10 o'clock the next morning, then you know I'm back O.K.
Well I guess thats all now, I'll write again about Wednesday. You'll get this Mon. or Tues.
So ta-ta for now,
All my very best love, Ally
[three rows of kisses]
P.S. In your letter this morning you said you didn't have a letter from me Friday. You should have because I posted one to you on Thursday. Still you probably got it to-day. xxx

Tues.
Dear Mum & Dad,
Well here I am again, feeling quite fit & well & no worse for having done 6 ops. I received your letter to-day. Glad to hear you are both O.K. Hope Mum has a nice time at Aunt Lena's this week.
Well when I wrote before last week I think I told you I'd done 4 ops. The last one being Bochum on Wed. night. Thurs. Friday & Sat we had off.
On Sunday night we went to Kassel, a 7 1/2 hrs. trip. Then again on Monday night (last night) we went to Frankfurt an 8 hr. trip.
Now we have tonight off & perhaps to-morrow as
[page break]
as[sic] well. Both trips to Kassel & Frankfurt were very good. We had no trouble at all. Really tremendous fires were started at both places. Especially at Kassel which seemed to be one huge fire. It was on fire from end to end & a thick pall of smoke thousands of feet high hung over it.
At Frankfurt last night, we saw two or three big explosions, & burning debris was flung high in the air, & the fires there were really tremendous.
We usually carry 2/1000 lbs. bombs & about 5 or 6000 lbs. of incendiares [sic]. The Lancs & Stirlings carry the 4000 & 8000 lb. blockbusters, but they can only take 1 - 8000 lbs.
Last night just before we got to the target a fighter attacked a Halifax just behind us. But the Halifax had seen it & was waiting, and as the fighter closed in we saw the Halifax open up & tracer bullets flew at the fighter. The fighter burst into flames, & went streaking down, when he hit the deck there was a
[page break]
big explosion & flames shot into the air.
We certainly eat some eggs & bacon on ops. One before we go & another when we get back.
[deleted] Well thats [/deleted] Ah.! Thanks for the lucky horseshoe, I'll take it with me in future. We have a mascot. Its a stuffed monkey. We call it Joey & always tie it up in the kite before we go. Jock always wears a purple scarf. But personally [sic] I'm not superstitious. If you want to come back every time, then keep your eyes skinned & do your job well. That'll bring you back, not the lucky mascots. But our skipper is really top-notch. He keeps us on tip-toe all the time we're out. Consequently no fighter has ever got near us before we've seen him, & we're well away in no time, & they never see us.
Had a letter from Betty to-day. She seems quite O.K. Also had one from Sam. He's at Barrow in Furness, but he's held up because the dockyard workers are on strike.
[page break]
Well thats about all for now. Will write again about Friday. So cheerio until then,
All my very best love,
Ally [three rows of kisses]

Sept 24/43. Friday.
Dear Mum & Dad,
Many thanks for your letters. I received two to-day. Blimey! Talk about greased lightening! You certainly moved some. Thank you very much. The parcel has arrived O.K. I expect my bike will take a day or two to get here though.
Well I am quite fit & well & glad to hear you are both O.K. Now I have something to tell you which will probably surprise you. I didn't really know whether to tell you or not. But you're not scared to know, & you always like to know what I'm doing. Well I've done
[page break]
2
two ops. It was grand, really grand. Talk about fun & excitement. I was on Wed. night 22nd. We went to Hanover. You've probably read about it by now. Then I was on again last night Thursday 23rd. This time to Mannheim.
Two in two nights, its not often that happens. We do on average two or three a week.
I enjoyed every minute of it, & believe me theres not much of those two cities left. Jerry's certainly going through it. One minute the place is peaceful & then in about 30 mins. its a mass of blazing ruins, on fire from end to end. Flames & smoke thousands of feet high. They're just swamped. I could still see the fires burning, the glow in the sky, when we were 200 miles away & thats not exagerating.[sic] Plane after plane, one after the other, just shoving 'em down. Poor Jerry. Its terrible what they're going through. But we enjoy doing it just the same. Their defences aren't bad, but
[page break]
3
just bewildered. We're all in & out so quickly that they don't have time to get going. Their flak doesn't seem to be able to reach [inserted] us [/inserted]. But it explodes underneath us & shakes us a bit, it's quite a pleasant sensation though. They rely chiefly on their night fighters. But they're not so hot. Nothing we can't deal with, & if we see them coming first they don't stand an earthly because there are eight belching machine guns waiting for 'em. & I've seen more than one Jerry fighter going down in flames, bless 'em. Yes I'd much sooner be up were [sic] we are than down below at Jerry's end. He know's [sic] what bombing is now alright, believe me. Its mass slaughter, with Jerry at the receiving end, & he won't be able to stand it much longer. Hanover & Mannheim are heaps of rubble now, & I'll bet those fires will burn for days.I think the Jerry firemen are the hardest worked blokes of the war.
We've had no trouble at all yet, & I've done
[page break]
4
my job to the satisfaction of everyone.
Johnny our pilot is wonderful. He can throw out kite about like an Austin seven. A searchlight picked us up over Hanover but Johnny was out of that in about 2 seconds. A fighter got on our tail but Jock had him spotted, and told Johnny, a couple of twists & turns & that fighter was soon disposed off, [sic] he lost us altogether. Poor old Jock was mad though because he didn't have a burst at it. There's no need for guns on our kite because Johnny can lose 'em in two shakes. Its a piece of cake.
The first trip on Wed. night to Hanover we weren't nervous, more excited. The only time we were scared, was when we arrived a little way off the target. When we saw the fires, searchlights & ack-ack, we did feel nervous for a second but it passed over. Johnny said, "O.K. blokes I'm not stopping here long, it ain't healthy, lets get back for the egg & bacon". So he turned
[page break]
5
in, opened up the engines, put the nose down for extra speed, & dived over Hanover at about 250, dropped the goods & were out again, all in about 2 mins. One [inserted] of [/inserted] the lads said over the intercom. 'Coo, ain't it pretty'. Another said, 'Blimey, its just like Blackpool illuminations'. Some of the things they say are really funny. Last night I wasn't the slightest bit nervous or excited, honestly. Its rather boring.
We have egg & bacon before we go, & again as soon as we get back. Its worth it to get two lots of egg & bacon.
We've got a rest for two or three nights now, to catch up on our sleep. I don't feel any different. My nerves are better if anything. Its nice on the way back home, when we get [deleted] back [/deleted] well away from the target & get the coffee out, & chocolates. It makes me hungry.
Well I thought you'd want to know, because
[page break]
6
you've always liked to know what I'm going, & I thought you'd be getting suspicious if I didn't tell you soon. But there's no reason at all for you to worry, because I know I'm going to be O.K. & I've always got my parachute handy.
We only [deleted] two [/deleted] [inserted] do [/inserted] about two trips a week, but by the time I come on leave I'll have a few in, & I'll have quite a bit to tell you.
Anyway I thought you'd like to know, & I know Mother will enjoy telling everyone, Ally's been over Jerry land.
Its funny to listen to the description of it on the news & know you [deleted] whe [/deleted] were there.
I've got £11 put on one side, I was going to send it home but I'll keep it by me, & keep adding to it.
I expect my bike will get here about Monday. I haven't heard from Betty yet. I won't say anything to her about my ops.
[page break]
7.
You can tell her or not, just as you like.
We do 30 ops. then have a rest for about 6 months as instructors, before doing a second 30 ops. 30 ops is called a 'tour of ops.' So we [inserted] do [/inserted] a tour then rest for 6 months then do our second tour. But I guess the war will be over before I get on to my second tour.
Well that about all for now, I'll write again Tues or Wed. & let you know then if my bike has arrived, I expect it'll come before then though, & thanks again for rushing it over like that, talk about move.
So Dennis has been home again. Its only about a fortnight since he had 10 days leave. Still I've got 14 days on the way.
Well ta-ta for now,
All my very best love
Ally [three rows of kisses]
P.S. I'd like to take Mr. Percival with me on a trip it'd do him good to see what Jerry's getting.
