My Own Darling,
Well here we are, up in the wilds, for a short spell.
This is a sort of a holiday, and I am entirely my own boss, doing exactly what I like for everything.
We are not allowed to say or write very much, so I am afraid this letter will have to be very short, but I hope sweet.
I have got my own big car up here, so I hope to see some of the countryside before we return. It is really very beautiful, what we have seen up to now.
[page break]
Hope the phone is now in order at home, because I hope to give you a ring next Sunday.
How are you keeping dear, and also the kiddies? I have got a most filthy cold & sore throat.
I have got my battle dress. I am told that I look very smart in it, and I like it very much.
This place would be grand for our holidays, if it was not so terribly far away. There are a number of big towns quite close, and yet it is on the sea-shore, with lovely sand & safe batheing. [sic] Ideal for the kiddies and not too deadly for us at night. We shall have to think it over.
Well dear, must close now, as I am terribly busy, best love to you all from Daddy.
[page break]
Last letter home from Wing Commander Arnold Louis Christian
Officer Commanding No 105 Squadron, Royal Air Force.
The letter was written less than 48 hours before he was lost in action and it is poignant to note that, probably, he was still suffering the heavy cold & sore throat mentioned.
105 Sqn was on detachment to RAF Lossiemouth, Elgin, Scotland for forward operations against enemy shipping targets off the Norwegian coast

My dear Maggie
Thanks awfully for the nice assorted parcel which I have just collected from the Post Office.
They all will be very useful especially now I was out of Shaving Cream & had only 20 cigs left. We are now flying every night so are unable to get out to replenish the stock.
Well as Regards Xmas it was quite OK but couldn’t do a lot because on Xmas day we were the only crew who were sufficiently advanced to be able to fly as a crew so were standing by in the event of Air Sea Rescue being required
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
but luckily we were not called on.
On Xmas Eve we were flying until about 5 o’clock, and on Dec 22 we flew up to Lossiemouth & back the next day Thats [sic] the reason the Xmas cards were late arriving. Xmas night I was invited to the WAAF NCO’s party had quite a good time there, plenty to eat and drink Free and since then have not been flying on the Sunday after Xmas we flew down to Newquay Cornwall & back quite a nice trip but flew over cloud the whole way never saw the ground once either there or back.
And each day since we have
[page break]
been night flying and even if the weather is bad when we are due to start we still have to hang about to wait for either better or worse weather to come We have only one more night trip to do here so shall be moving on again
Well I think thats [sic] all for now except to wish you all the best for 1943
Thanking you
Your loving brother
Ellis

Thanks for parcel she sent, especially as night flying had precluded his from shopping for essentials. Continues to describe activities around Christmas 1942 including being on search and rescue standby on Christmas day and a sortie to Lossiemouth and Newquay as well as a Women's Auxiliary Air Force non-commissioned officer's party. Notes that he has only one more operation to go.

WORCS. 6/6/44.
Wg./Cdr C.DV. Willis, DSO, DFC,
RAF Foulsham, Norfolk.
Sir:
I am taking the liberty of writing you this letter to express the appreciation of myself and crew of having had the privilege to complete the largest part of a tour of operations under your command, our only regret is not to have been able to finish the tour with you.
Instruction is very monotonous and tiring, even more so than expected, coupled with long hours and a rather starched atmosphere it makes one wish to be back with the Squadron, in fact ['s' deleted] ops would no doubt prove to be a rest.
Miller is now a F/O and well established as I/C his favorite [sic] navigational aids in Elgin and justly proud of himself.
Miller and myself were first posted to Lossiemouth where we were recognised by the Group Captain

who enquired after your health. [inserted] 2 [/inserted] He had heard you had gone missing in a Beaufighter. He still takes kindly toward 192 personnel.
I hope I am right in assuming you [underlined] will [/underlined] be coming back to Foulsham as Station Commander or perhaps to some position in the old group. If this is the case, both Miller and myself still wish a tour in Mosquitoes and should you ever require the services of either one of us we will welcome the chance to get back. The outlook of fifteen months of this doesn't appeal to me and perhaps a request for an experienced? pilot in your work would be well received by this group, number 91.
I close now wishing yourself, Mrs Willis and family the best of health.
Yours faithfully,
IMR Leask F/O
