Dear Abdul,
I do feel a wretch not having written to you before this, but please forgive me as writing is not my forte. However, I keep hearing about you from various sources and am more than pleased that the [indecipherable word] is so satisfactory.
It was a pity that the line was so very bad when you rang up; I could hardly hear a word you said. I expect you are [indecipherable word] that you have a flying [indecipherable word] again; it really is a practical demonstration that the service really neads [sic] the old Abdul and that he is [indecipherable word] fit to cope.
Audrey Guy was up on a social visit a week ago. She is very fit and it was grand to see her. She is now employed as a Dental Receptionist and seems to be quite happy and [indecipherable word]. Psychologically she was a new person with a cheerful, happy and self confident
[page break]
Outlook and this pleased me as much as her physical well being.
As you will probably have heard from Sister Dawson Freddie is now in [indecipherable words]. have heard from her [decipherable word] times and, although she was not happy at first, all seems well and she is getting quite fat and loving the complete change of environment. She will probably come back for her final boarding.
Well my service days are probably nearly over since I am due for release in July and go for 12 days leave at the end of next week. I say probably because I have been expecting a half wing the last 2 months and if it comes through I may decide to stay on for 6 months. This also depends of course on my success or failure to get a suitable appointment under the new Health Service [indecipherable mark] to be decided on interviews whilst on leave.
Must close now but will always be very pleased to hear from you all about ‘Abduls World’
Best wishes
John [indecipherable initial] Ham

Dear Mary & Bill,
Thanks a lot for your letter of Monday night which I received on Thursday. I would have replied to it earlier, but duty called and I couldn’t get any time, in fact, on Thursday I failed to write to Mick, and that is practically the first day I’ve missed since a long time before we were married. But then, all good records have to be broken at some time, don’t they?
I’m glad that you had a good time on our recent outings together, and it is a great pity that these times have to be so short, but we live in hopes of far better days to come. Mick is very unselfish
[page break]
[underlined] 2 [/underlined]
about that really, because as you know I’m always dashing off here and there, often without her, but we’ve made up our minds that we will have more time on our own next time. By that, of course, I mean cutting out old Hall, Dudley office & a few other, undesirables. They can’t expect me to visit them every leave, can they?
Those raids which you mention were, in the main, Mosquito efforts, but I hope you were thinking of me at 9 oclock [sic] on Thursday night because at that very minute I was adding my “block buster” to the number already giving some Berlin resident a headache! It was quite a thrill to be over the “big city,” as we call it, but we only had opportunity for appreciating it because we had surprised the defences.
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
It makes a nice entry in my log book, but personally, I’ll leave Berlin to those who feel like going through a wall of steel and about 500 fighters. It can prove very dangerous! As things turned out, we weren’t troubled a lot, but we couldn’t make base because of petrol shortages so we spent the night on an aerodrome near Cambridge. You see we go visiting all sorts of places!
I feel sorry for you & [indecipherable word] this week; what’s it feel like to be a grass widow? Maybe Mick could tell you if you really can’t make up your mind! If you don’t mind, I’d prefer you to send that book on to me, because I don’t get much time to
[page break]
[underlined] 4 [/underlined]
read whole books at home, as you may guess. I’ll take good care of it, and I’m sure I shall enjoy it.
Finally, your P.S. No, I didn’t forget mom’s birthday, and although I wasn’t able to get her a card I wrote a letter to reach home on Tuesday and wished her many happy returns in that.
Well, I haven’t been able to tell you much news, but there really isn’t much to tell. On Tuesday I had to go to Halton hospital for a suspected skin disease, but an examination found nothing wrong beyond a mild attack of balanitis, so I came back here on Wednesday. It’s always best to be on the safe side and let the doc. make sure, isn’t it?
[page break]
[underlined] 5 [/underlined]
And there I will close, so goodnight to you both, good luck, and keep smiling. We’ll soon finish this job – and Berlin – off soon!
Your loving brother,
[underlined] Albert [/underlined]

Dear Joan,
Thank you so much for your long letter, and your pleasant invitation to visit you. I shall certainly try & pop up there if I have an opportunity. I am really delighted to learn that you have received, first-hand news of Bobs 1 & 2!, and that they are getting along well.
Do please, let me know when they are homeward bound, as I’d like to be one of the first to meet them. In addition I might be able to show them the quickest way to get their affairs straightened out, &
[page break]
save them unnecessary journeys from one department of Air Ministry to another.
I am going to Halton R.A.F. Hospital this week-end & hope to find my ankle completely fit once more. In the meantime, I must start looking round for a new job somewhere – possibly in the old 92 Group area. I missed a leg up in March by going back to a Squadron, & hope I might be lucky enough to get it this time. I think Bob & I have completed the same number of Ops now, & we shall have had it for a time at least. Naturally, I have to think more carefully with a wife to think about now, & you will understand
[page break]
exactly how it is.
Anne is on leave with me, as I think I told you, & was fortunate to get five weeks off. Unfortunately, as both our homes are shut up at the moment, it gets pretty expensive staying at hotels all the while – However ‘c’est la guerre’, and I doubt whether we shall ever have such a long holiday together again.
I wish you had been at our wedding with Bob – I am sure you’d have loved it. He made a wizard best man and thoroughly enjoyed himself I think. [deleted] Rember [/deleted] Remember the one at Kettering too? I hope they are getting along all right & managed
[page break]
a real honey-moon since then.
Well, Joan, I must get along with my mounting correspondence. I must apologize for my writing – my new pen is a poor substitute for my lost Parker, alas!
Here’s to a gathering of the clans when the lads get home!
Cheerio.
Sincerely
Alan

Dear Lefty,
Jack and I heard the grand news to-night when we came on duty and felt we must convey our warmest congratulations to you.
We fear we did not treat you with the respect due to a person winning such an honour but trust you will forgive us. If we could only re-live the past fortnight with our present knowledge we wouldn’t even touch the soles of your feet with a large pole!!! We hope that you are enjoying a greater measure of peace than we found it possible to allow you in Ward 14.
The best of luck and good health
[page break]
always.
Yours sincerely
W. Meakin & Jock.

Darling Johnny,
How do you like this? The letter I sent to Halton returned here by the simple expedient of tearing off one layer of envelope savers! I enclose the whole thing.
It was so sweet of you to ring up last night & I am thrilled to death at the prospect of the billets you have found. The one uncertainty about the whole thing seems to me to be your next visit to Halton. It should be around Christmas time, & if they decide to operate that
[page break]
will muck everything up. Or do you think they will put it off again till you’ve finished your OTU?
I decided not to go jaunting up to the West End today as Frances’ cold is still very heavy, poor wee mite. Last night she was crying on & off till 2 am, & I am getting Dr Bethune in today, tho’ I don’t really think its anything worse than a nasty cold & cough. It’s pitiful to see her looking so miserable, she who is always so bright & happy.
Longing to see you next weekend
Always yours Ursula.

Darling, I have been indulging in a perfect way of spending, so that it is too late to go home & write you a long letter. I’ve bought some chamois leather to make a waistcoat for Barbara’s Christmas present (windproof to wear when autobyking etc) price 10/- - and 2 prs of stockings for me! They so rarely have my size in that I decided to be a devil & get some, artificial silk ones of good make. I’ll probably draw some out of my P.O.
Hope you got home safely & pleasantly. Good luck at Halton.
All my love
Ursula.

Darling,
Frances weighed 19.8 yesterday, an advance of only 2 oz, so the week before must have been a freak. Anyway I’m keeping on with the 10 pm feed for a while longer. We sit her up in her high chair for a time in the evening now, & she loves it.
Thanks very much for your letter. I’m sorry
[page break]
you couldn’t get over to PM after all, however it was grand for me to get a letter unexpectedly. I’m glad you seem to be getting somewhere at last with the medical attention, I only hope they are really thorough at Halton.
Nothing much to report this end. I’ve been drying some apple rings today. They’re not finished yet. This evening I’m due to go to dinner to the Milligans – what a gay dog! I went to the Greenishes last evening with a cert. for Mrs G & broached the subject of the
[page break]
raffle for Waqrships Week. They cottoned on well & Mrs G offered some jam & some baby wool. I suggested Mr G. might pull out the women’s teeth for his contribution, but Mrs G said at least he could give them a ride in his chair!
Must pop off to town now, Frances is impatient. I’ve stuck in all photos to date – another good job done.
Lots of love to you darling, and good luck
Yours always
Ursula.

Dear Don.
I am so very sorry I have not written before, I have been full of good intentions but somehow I just haven't got down to it.
Yes the rumours were quite correct, I have been in dock and in fact I am still there.
Briefly, I was “X” rayed in January 1949 [?] and they reported a slight mottling at the apex of the right lung, the RAF put me in Ely Hospital for ten days during which period they did numerous tests and then said there was nothing wrong with me. I then went to C.M.E. and they arranged for me to have a check up every three months for a year.
I had three check ups which were all O.K. But on the fourth and final check up they asked me to come in here for further tests. So in I came in January 1950 and I am still here.
They said they were of the opinion that I had a slight T.B. infection

of the right lung. They applied certain treatment which resulted in fluid forming in the chest and I have now had 34 minor operations in an attempt to remove and stop the fluid forming, all without success.
Last Thursday I had a long chat with a Group Capt. Rumbold, who is an [word indecipherab le] physician to the King, and he is arranging for me to be transferred to the King Edward VII Sanatorium, Midhurst, Near Haselmere, Surrey, in order that I may be placed in the care of the leading chest physician and surgeon in Europe. So in about 6 [?] weeks time off I go to Midhurst and I sincerely hope that they will stop the fluid and that I will soon be out and about again and that I can start again where I left off.
It is all so annoying especially when I remember that I was as fit as the proverbial fiddle when I came in here Such is life!!
No doubt you have heard from Peter Rimshaw about the Squadron Reunion, are you going?
I sure wish I could be there, they

were very happy days, and, although I can't be there in person I'll certainly be there in spirit.
Bobbie still enjoys very good health but naturally is fed up with my being here, when I do get out we will start all over again.
How are things with you, well I hope. How do you stand as regards the reserve will you be called for training.
If here is another show down, wouldn't it be grand if all the 192 types could get together again.
How are the children, its such a long time since I last saw them, but when I get out of here I would very much like to rectify the omission, if I may.
Well Don. I'll make this all for now and will certainly try to write more often. Bobbie joins me in sending our very sincere & best wishes to you both
Yours most sincerely
