No. 35 Squadron,
Royal Air Force,

Hunts.
20th April, 1945.
Ref: 35S/C.68/178/P.1.
Dear Mrs. Meredith,
It is with profound regret that I find it my unhappy task to confirm the telegram you will have received informing you that your Husband is missing as a result of air operations.
As tail gunner of his crew, he took off at twenty minutes to seven on the night of 14th April, 1945, to attack Potsdam. It is now known that all the members of the crew baled out just after leaving the target area. The pilot, Flying Officer Bowen-Morris, who continued to fly the aircraft for some time after the crew had left, has now returned to the Squadron. He states that he saw all the crew leave the aircraft safely but he has, of course, no further information to give as to what happened after that. We assure you that you will be informed immediate any further news is received.
I and the Squadron as a whole and your Husband’s brother aircrew, shar your impatience for the good news that he is safe though a prisoner of war. Meanwhile, we wish you to know that you have our deepest sympathy in this period of anxiety.
Your Husband and his crew had only been with the Squadron a short time but had shown by their keenness they would have developed into one of the most efficient and reliable crews and it will not be easy to replace them.
P.T.O.
[page break]
Attached to this letter is a list of the Next-of-Kin of the members of the crew. Should you wish to write to any of them, please send your letters addressed and sealed and stamped, to me, and I will arrange for them to be forwarded.
Your Husbands kit and private property is now being attended to by the Effects Officer. It is the regulation that this is forwarded to a Standing Committee of Adjustment, R.A.F. Central Depository, Colnbrook, Buckinghamshire, who will communicate with you in due course submitting the inventories of personal property.
If there are any points not covered by this letter, please do not hesitate to ask assistance from myself or my staff.
Yours sincerely,

[underlined] CONFIDENTIAL NOTICE [/underlined]
The names of all who lose their lives or are wounded or reported missing while serving with the Royal Air Force will appear in the official casualty lists published from time to time in the Press.
Any publication of the date, place or circumstances of a casualty and particularly any reference to the unit concerned, might give valuable information to the enemy, and for this reason, only the name, rank and service number are included in the official lists.
Relatives are particularly requested, in the national interest, to ensure that any notices published privately do not disclose the date, place or circumstances of the casualty, or the unit.
The press have been asked to co-operate in ensuring that no information of value to the enemy is published.
Any premature reference in the Press to those reported missing, may jeopardise their chances of evading capture if they have survived without falling into enemy hands.

OFFICER'S MESS,

GRAVELEY,
HUNTS.
30th Nov. 1945.
Dear Vic,
Afraid I make a rotten correspondent. Very sincere congratulations on the D.F.C. you certainly deserve it and I'm ever so pleased you've got it.
Well, how is Civvy St. treating you – I am due out about next April but am considering 12 months deferment. I bet that shakes you. I hope you are settling down well and have found a job to suit you – personally I think I shall revolt at the sight of anything resembling work when I get out.
[page break]
If the weather is good tomorrow and the a/c serviceable and God is willing I shall be nipping off to Bari for the first time for seven weeks. I've almost forgotten what the place looks like.
News from the Sqd. is not very exciting – Algeo demobbed (thank goodness) various odd bods posted here and there including Lummis and Sharcolt and Hooper to Honiton (for overseas) Paddy Simpson from B flight and so on. You'll be pleased to know that Ken Holt also got his D.F.C.
We are having a mess party on 14-12-45. and although the food
[page break]
is apparently to be not very outstanding but there should be plenty of drink and I would like to wet your ribbons. [deleted letter] I think I could even fix you up with a bed for the night just in case. Anyway the nearest station is Offard and Buckden which can be attacked from the North via Peterboro [sic] or Huntingdon and from the South via Hitchin or intermediate stations. Maybe you will give me a ring nearer the date at Croxton 232
Mess Extension 60
'B' flt. Extension 39.
Will save all further natter until the party so until then farewell and all the best.
Yours, Johnny.

OFFICERS' MESS,

GRAVELEY,
HUNTS.
17th Jan 1946.
Dear Vic,
Well how are things going? Have you settled down to work yet or are you like I fear I shall be – ruined by idleness in the air force.
I haven't had a reply to my invitation to a party but there's quite a long story to that. Last time I wrote was on 31/11/45 and on 1/12/45. I s/c Bari and arrived same day. Spent 12 days in that mud swamped, poverty blighted, filthy place and then did a short hop to Pomi.
Once again circumstances were against us and I was quite worried
[page break]
in case you'd accepted my invitation and found me missing. Anyway apparently you didn't. Pomi was honoured with our company over Xmas and the New Year (hence no Xmas card to reciprocate your seasonal greetings). Unfortunately I boobed again and made a fool of myself in front of the C.O. and Squadron Commander so had double cause for delight when we eventually made the return trip on 3/1/46.
We had a pretty ropey Xmas even though I was as p--d as a newt on Xmas eve – we finished up by throwing drinks at one another and crawling back on our
[page break]
hands and knees. New Year was even worse so I won't say any more about it. Anyway I'm back to normal now and today I did a 5 hr X country and landed at the wrong airfield when I came back (Remember what I called you when you landed at Waterbeach – I'm one too)
Anyway Vic I'm dreading the day when I have to go back into civvy st. and work for shillings. I'd stay in but I haven't even got the nerve for that.
Must close now but let's hear from you and make your own suggestion for a re-union.
Yours,
Johnny.
P.S. Ken Holt & Bill Gannie are posted.

My dear Mum,
Have had a wonderful time since our arrival here, but I’m just melting away with the heat.
Again as before we have had only a short stay and tomorrow we are flying to our next stage Denver.
I called Doris up by ‘phone from New York, and the family were most delighted to hear from me, I’m still hoping against hope that on my return I shall be able to get some time off to visit them.
Last night a party was given in our honour at an enormous country mansion, dancing in the grounds, it was just like a film

setting, everything was so lovely.
The squadron commander received a ‘phone call from Rita Hayworth yesterday, and she is meeting us together with other screen lovelies on our arrival at Los Angeles on the 28th.
Isn’t this just wonderful, I bet a few people are envious of us, I will certainly have something to talk about when I return.
Well thats [sic] about all for today, hope you enjoy your summer holiday.
‘Bye for now.
Regards to all
Love
