On 17th June 1942 Joe became a trainee pilot but due to a heart defect he was accepted as a trainee navigator on November 11th 1942. qualifying on June 15th 1943.
Joe keept [sic]his kit in perfect order, he showed us where he had german notes sewn into his belt seams. He enjoyed most home made apple pie with crumbly cheese. He learnt to speak a little german, which sadly he was never able to use.
His pet cat “Burty” went with him on all operations.

[underlined] CONFIDENTIAL NOTICE [/underlined]
The names of all who lose their lives or are wounded or reported missing while serving with the Royal Air Force will appear in the official casualty lists published from time to time in the Press.
Any publication of the date, place or circumstances of a casualty, and particularly any reference to the unit concerned, might give valuable information to the enemy, and for this reason, only the name, rank and Service number are included in the official lists.
Relatives are particularly requested, in the national interest, to ensure that any notices published privately do not disclose the date, place or circumstances of the casualty, or the unit.
The Press have been asked to co-operate in ensuring that no information of value to the enemy is published.

ADVICE TO THE RELATIVE OF A MAN WHO IS MISSING
In view of the official notification that your relative is missing, you will naturally wish to hear what is being done to trace him.
The Service Departments make every endeavour to discover the fate of missing men, and draw upon all likely sources of information about them.
A man who is missing after an engagement may possibly be a prisoner of war. Continuous efforts are made to speed up the machinery whereby the names and camp addresses of prisoners of war can reach this country. The official means is by lists of names prepared by the enemy Government. These lists take some time to compile, especially if there is a long journey from the place of capture to a prisoner of war camp. Consequently “capture cards” filled in by the prisoners themselves soon after capture and sent home to their relatives are often the first news received in this country that a man is a prisoner of war. That is why you are asked in the accompanying letter to forward at once any card or letter you may receive, if it is the first news you have had.
Even if no news is received that a missing man is a prisoner of war, endeavours to trace him do not cease. Enquiries are pursued not only among those
[page break]
Who were serving with him, but also through diplomatic channels and the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva.
The moment reliable news is obtained from any of these sources it is sent to the Service Department concerned. They will pass the news on to you at once, if they are satisfied that it is reliable. It would be cruel to raise false hopes, such as may well be raised if you listen to one possible channel of news, namely, the enemy’s broadcasts. These are listened to by official listeners, working continuously night and day. The few names of prisoners given by enemy announcers are carefully checked. They are often misleading, and this is not surprising, for the object of the inclusion of prisoners’ names in these broadcasts is not to help the relatives of prisoners, but to induce British listeners to hear some tale which otherwise they could not be made to hear. The only advantage of listening to these broadcasts is an advantage to the enemy.
The official listeners can never miss any name included in an enemy broadcast. They pass every name on to the Service Department concerned. There every name is checked, and in every case where a name can be verified, the news is sent direct to the relatives.
There is, therefore, a complete official service designed to secure for you and to tell you all discoverable news about your relative. This official service is also a very human service, which well understands the anxiety of relatives and will spare no effort to relieve it.

AIR MINISTRY
(Casualty Branch),
73-77, OXFORD STREET, W.1.
Your Ref: P.41509/1/P.4.(B.6)
15th August 1944
Madam,
I am directed to refer to your letter of the 11th August 1944 regarding your husband, Acting Squadron Leader C. H. Wilson, D.F.C., and to state in reply to your enquiries that as the Department has no information of any kind regarding any member of the crew it is impossible to offer a suggestion as to whether or not he has escaped and is in hiding.
No definite information is available as to whether our husband’s aircraft was on Path Finding duty but an enquiry is being forwarded to the Officer Commanding his Squadron who may be in a position to give this information. The reply will be communicated to you as soon as it is received.
It is regretted that the Department is unable to say how many members of the ninety four aircraft who failed to return from operational duties on the night of 30th/31st March have been reported missing as the research entailed in obtaining this information would be very considerable indeed. I am to add, however, that no information has been received regarding any member of your husband’s crew [handwritten] who are therefore all classified as missing. [/handwritten]
I am, Madam, Your obedient Servant,
[signed] R W Livingstone[?] [/signed]
For Director of Personal Services.
Mrs. C. H. Wilson,

No. 7 Squadron,
R.A.F. Station,
Oakington,
Cambridge.
1st April, 1944.
Dear Mrs. Wilson,
I deeply regret to have to confirm that your husband, Squadron Leader C.H. Wilson, D.F.C., is missing from air operations.
Your husband was Captain of an aircraft detailed to attack a target at Nuremberg on the night of 30/31st March, 1944, but as wireless silence is usually maintained on operational flights, I am not aware of what may have happened, as nothing was heard of the aircraft after it took off.
Squadron Leader Wilson and his crew had been with us only a short time but all had wide operational experience and since joining this Squadron had created a deep impression by their keenness and undoubted efficiency. I have every hope that they will have overcome whatever difficulties they met on this occasion and, like so many of our crews, will have succeeded in landing safely, although it may take a few weeks for news to reach us.
It is desired to explain that the request in the telegram notifying you of the casualty to your husband was included with the object of avoiding his chance of escape being prejudiced by undue publicity, in case he is still at large. This is not to say that any information about him is available, but is a precaution adopted in the case of all personnel reported missing.
In view of the operational nature of this Station, it would be very much appreciated if all enquiries concerning your husband could be conducted in writing.
May I extend the profound sympathy to you on behalf of myself and the whole Squadron, with the hope that better news will come through in the very near future.
Yours sincerely,
[signed] W G Lockhart[?] [/signed]
Wing Commander.
Mrs. J. H. Wilson,
2, Kensington Grove,
Denton,
Nr. Manchester.

Easter Sunday 1944.
Dear Mrs Wilson
My son was with your husband as navigator when the plane left base for Nuremberg on the night 30/31 March last, and did not return. My sympathy with you is therefore most sincere. My son spoke to me of your husband’s skill and experience, & I know the whole crew had the utmost confidence in him. This thought is now one of my biggist[sic] consolations.
My husband visited the station at Oakington [?] & saw the C.O. and several senior officers. All are of the opinion that with

[deleted] with [/deleted] luck we shall soon get some good news.
Forgive me for presuming to write to you in my anxiety. The people at Oakington gave my husband your address yesterday.
Please tell me if you get any further news, my boy was only twenty, but had been on operational flying for about 9 months, and had done several sorties with Sq/L Wilson over Germany.
We are endeavouring from every source possible to get the earliest possible news of [underlined] any [/underlined] of the crew, and naturally if we do hear we will write you immediately.
Wishing you every possible comfort.
Yours sincerely
Ellen Stevens.

Dear Mrs Wilson
Ma I just express my deepest sympathy.
As S/Ldr Wilsons[sic] batman I have had handed to me a number of articles to be forwarded to you, these I am forwarding under separate cover & trust the parcel reaches you safely.
It has been stated that over 90% from here have been taken prisoner so I hope that will be some small consolation to you. Finally may I say that after four years in the R.A.F. S/Ldr Wilson was my idea of an Officer & a Gentleman
Yours faithfully

Dear Mrs Wilson.
Thank you so much for your kind letter, no unfortunately I have had no news of my son and I am in communication with several of the Parents of the Crew, and nothing has been heard of any one of the Crew. To me it seems almost impossible that a Lancaster & Crew could disappear and nothing be heard of them. I know it takes quite a time for things to get found. not[?] in a big Raid. but I hope & pray that when news comes it will be the news we are all longing for and if I should

get any news good or bad I would write to you at once.
It was very kind of you to write to me. My son has 3 brothers in the Forces. 3 in RAF. One in the Army. May I ask you why your husband was the Pilot of the Lancaster and not the Pilot (original) excuse me for asking you.
Hoping that good news will come soon to us all.
Yours very sincerely
Tom-Clive Liddle.

Dear Mrs Wilson
My son Frank was Rear Gunner in the plane which left base on March 30.31 and did not return.
My sympathy with you is therefore most sincere.
We are endeavouring from enemy sources to get early news and if we do, I shall write you immediately, I beg of you to let us know should you get any information.
We got your address from Oakington
Yours sincerely
J Fuller.

May 14 1944
Dear Mrs Wilson
May I thank you for the kind thoughts which prompted you to write me? The R.C.A.F. did not notify me as to the address of the next of kin of the remainder of the crew, who were all English, as they do with Canadian crews and we have been rather at sea as to who to get in touch with in event we hearing of any developments in regard to Jim. If we hear any good news, I will send you a cable. We will appreciate any further [word]? As to any member of the crew.
Though time is passing, we are sure of hearing good news. Jim always spoke so well of all members of the crew, and with a pilot of the experience of your husband we feel that they all would have a good sporting chance.
We have a sister-in-law living in London, who was attached to the Red Cross
[page break]
[on headed notepaper]
and I feel sure that through her efforts we may have news, earlier perhaps than would otherwise arrive.
My other boy is in the Navy and our one girl, Enid, who has just reached her seventeenth birthday is at home with us.
My wife joins me in thanks for your thoughts in writing us.
Yours very sincerely.
Gordon J Ferrier.

Dear Mrs Wilson,
I feel I just had to write you, and express with you my deepest sympathy during this anxious time of waiting of news of our loved ones. I had your lovely letter forwarded on to me, by [indecipherable word] parents , you see I am Gei’s girl friend, and I guess I am feeling this blow pretty badly too. I can well understand
[page break]
just how this is affecting you, as when I heard from Mrs Ferrier in Cananda, she told me you had three small children, and I [indecipherable word] then that God would surely take care of them, and that one day soon, I know your husband, and all the boys will turn up smiling. They must for all our sakes, and the boys had such faith in your husband, that I feel it will only take time for them to be once more back amongst us. I feel if we trust in them, they can’t let us down, and
[page break]
we will keep on praying very hard, and I feel sure our prayers will be answered, so until then keep your chin up, along with all of us.
Yours Sincerely

March 29. 1944
Dear Gray:
Thanks for your letter I’m sorry we can’t manage & meet but that may happen later. I haven’t been able to get any leave lately either.
A little thing like a tetanus shot shouldn’t worry you. I have had 6 in the air force – two of them by mistake last year when the documents were lost I am getting lots of other ways now to pass an evening besides dancing. Can you get coupons for clothes? If not I’ll see what I can do. Probably not much but I can try anyway.
I have a new pilot now as Pete got it at Stuttgart two weeks ago [deleted] on [/deleted] as they say
[page break]
here he was “posted by night” I am sorry to lose him. My new one is a squadron leader and a very good pilot and although too keen I guess we will make out all right. To my way of thinking we are doing too much flying. I have flown twenty two times in the last three weeks most of them for practice This is just like a training station with P.T. at 9 in the mornings and so on. I have done three ops in the last week (Frankfurt, Berlin and Essen) No trouble on any of them worth mentioning. I must close now
Lots of luck
Jim
