Hello Darling,
It seems ridiculous that I should have to put such a huge, idiotic address on such a small page but the R.A.F. are experts in the art of Bull. S. after 5 years of practice and it’s one of their gawky regulations.
However, let’s not worry too much over such trifling things.
I feel an utter pig darling. I left the mess less than five minutes before you rang this evening. After waiting 15 minutes I decided you weren’t going to call me and the weather was beginning to get
[page break]
- as I thought – too rough for you to venture out. That’s twice I’ve let you down now and really [deleted] darlg [/deleted] ([symbol] damn) darling. I’m awfully sorry. Please forgive me.
We’ve not long since finished a thick “cup of cocoa and a tin of peaches which Donald condescended to open. Most generous of him don’t you think, and don’t make noises as though your mouth waters!
I’m lying flat on my tummy, (which is making queer jingling noises) and find its most difficult to write in such a position.
I’ve spoken to
[page break]
Midge Angel and have tried to make him turn his bed over to you, but nothing doing so I guess you’ll just have to put up with me for a bed mate! D’you mind?
[indecipherable name] and I left the garage at 12.15 last evening and were in the billet at precisely 1. AM so I’m beginning to think one can do amazing things with such ridiculously short legs as mine, and a “bike”.
We are supposed to be doing P.T. tomorrow my Pet but I’m afraid they’ve “had” me as I want to tear into Lincoln to cuddle my beloved xxx [circled x]
[page break]
I must say dearest “its” almost a glorious change to have my old bicycle out here. The odd little pieces of energy it saves me are countless.
Know what Darling? I’m terribly much in love. What’s more [deleted] its [/deleted] (Bugger!!!) it happens to be you I’m loving.
I must mentally hug and kiss you good night for now my darling and please may your ear burn just a weeny bit
Bye bye dearest
my very fondest
love and kisses

Blast you, move over darling and let me sleep. Ouch – you’re pinching me!
Wish it could be Darling – I so love you. Please believe me won’t you. I know you are almost afraid to even think it but really Angel I am sincere about it all.
Had the pleasure of receiving another parcel from Mother today with boys feasts. Doing swell aren’t I? Must scram now sweetheart – see you Wednesday. (I hope.) 48 starts Friday I think.
‘Night dearest. All my love and x’s

Hello Darling,
Joy of all joys – the station Commander was so pleased with the work done during the month that he came good today and gave us a half day off. Gee! but I almost nipped into Lincoln. But never mind I’ll be there tomorrow night.
Anyway instead we went for a bike ride into Newark Midge, Bud and myself. After watching a cricket match, R.A.F v. Army for a while (Hell! was it drag) we went down to a forces canteen, partook of a couple
[page break]
of cups of tea per man, (or mouse) had several hundred tarts? – which were all tart and no jam – then stretched ourselves out on the lawn in the sun and quietly dozed off.
I was rudely awakened by W.A.M placing a hot cup of coffee on my bare hand. The time was then something after five. We rode slowly back to camp and I had the most glorious cold show imaginable. Oh! but was it lush.
Then we took blankets out on the grass
[page break]
Darling Pet – I wish you had been there – just you and I alone. I do miss you angel and want to be with you all the time.
Maybe you don’t believe it kid but it’s so very very true. On day soon darling I’m going to ask you to be mine always so you can start preparing your answer now and it [underlined] must [/underlined] be [underlined] Yes [/underlined]. xxxx
Tomorrow being the first of May we are going to remove the concieted [sic] look from Donalds face – We are in
[page break]
other words, going to shave off his miserable moustache.
He’ll go absolutely bloody mad but we all think it’s time he didn’t have it.
I have run short of news sweet, so will say cheerio for now.
All my very, very, very fondest love and all my kisses always darling. xxx

[underlined] CAUTION No news here at all [/underlined]
Darling Angel,
Thanks a heap and a heap more for the photo Pet. Its now adorns the wall of our (Midge and I) luxurious suite and, darling I’m awfully proud of it. Instead of just sitting here and dreaming of you and loving [inserted] you [/inserted] so much I can also see you – well, almost.
So love you so terribly much dearest. Anyway you should know that by now but I must keep telling you.
And thank you too for the card – it’s ever so sweet of you. But then of course you are a sweet kid.
I didn’t get any parcel darling but I’m rather inclined to think the

W.A.A.F. Office “bitch” in charge of that section has had far too many late nights. She sure looks it anyway.
Don’t tell her I said so though.
I’m sorry I wasn’t able to ring you this morning “Missus” and still more sorry I couldn’t see you tonight. We had the afternoon off but had to be back for briefing at 6 O’clock. Not knowing where I would most likely find you and knowing that I wouldn’t anyway I decided to stay in and do some work. Stop laughing – I said [underlined] work [/underlined] – and mean it.
Anyway to go on with my story. I sat in a

chair in the Auto room after lunch and what do you know – I woke up just in time for tea. “Ah! Me”. (Quote D.G.W.B.)
We did actually get air-borne tonight but the weather became duff so we returned to base. When we landed our brakes wouldn’t hold and we finished up having an argument with the hedge at t’other end of the Air-field. Apart from the bumps it was quite exciting.
I’m in bed now after having piled my inards [sic] high with bacon and eggs. (two of). 3 today!!!

Darling, when I see you again you are going to tell me what all this shorthand means – or else!
Well Pet the time is 12.45 A.M and I’m going to fall asleep if I don’t say good night now. I only wish you were here with me then it wouldn’t be necessary to say it at all.
For now, kid, cheerio.
All my fondest love
always darling.

Darling,
I’m tired! I managed to crawl most reluctantly out of my bundle of blankets and such this afternoon about 4.30 and now I’m ready for bed again at 10 O’clock.
We flew last night Pet, and if you managed to get through to the mess I was at bloody bloody briefing. I didn’t even have time to ‘phone there and leave a message. Hell! but I bet you were mad.
The trip last night was horrible – no awful - sounds better. When we finally got “down”, filled the gaps inside and climbed into bed the old clock showed almost 6. Not bad I reckon because we got air-borne about 9 O’clock the night before.
[page break]
Struth! I believe I’m moaning again. I seem to do a lot of it don’t I Angel?
Now – why didn’t I come in and see you tonight. Well darling it was work. I did a small amount of everything tonight. Ironing, sewing sweeping. Really a domestic old bugger – but aren’t I just. Anyway I’m going to see you tomorrow night whether you like it or not. I’ve a strong feeling you will like it though. Am I right?
There’s been a rather persistent rumour going round that we won’t be going to Syerson until Thursday and if that’s the case a 48 seems to be sticking out at us. Gee! but I hope so darling. Should we get one
[page break]
it will most probably be starting from after duty tomorrow. Darling, you’ll hear all this tomorrow so why am I telling you. Why do I write at all in fact. I guess it’s because I love you so much darling and then too, I seem lost not having even heard you today.
I do love you darling xxxxx I saw Elsie to the top of the hill O.K Friday night and gave her (bugger) a weeny teeny good-night “peck” about which you will most likely have heard a great deal. But I know you trust me darling and that too gives me a wonderful feeling.
I don’t know whether you get what I mean – I suppose you do anyway.
The [underlined] ammonia [/underlined]? works
[page break]
wonders Pet. Like hell. I carried it stuck down the front of my tunic the other night, dismounted from that wonderful piece of machinery which I place between my legs, then tred water, propped it against the wall then – Then the bottle slipped out and broke on our doorstep. Hell! I was mad. I [deleted] cav [/deleted] cursed long loud and heartily and felt eased. Strange that you know. I wasn’t cursing because it cost me 10D but to think that I carried it from Lincoln right to my room then broke the bugger. Now I think it’s a helluva a joke.
Oh! by the way, that was bud (he apparently isn’t worth a capital “B” but it’s just a slip on my part.) who we saw
[page break]
heroically knecking a wench in the cinema. He’s quite [deleted] disappoint [/deleted] disappointed we didn’t go and sit with him. Aw heck!!!
My peepers are beginning to close dearest so methinks I shall leave you and get some in. I’ll be ringing and seeing you tomorrow.
‘Night for now
All my love darling
Ever Yours

Darling,
I’m going to try and rake up enough news to partly compose a letter to you to fulfill [sic] my promise and because (and this is my main reason) because I love you so darling. Had it not been for Pay Parade (notice the capital letters) this morning I would having listening to your lovely voice now. Provided of course the boss didn’t rouse you and make you work.
Have you had enough sleep yet Pet? No! I haven’t either but I will certainly catch up on some here I’ll bet. Believe me though dearest I would much rather stay awake and be with you.
[page break]
xx
I think I may go into Newark tomorrow evening and find the station and where the bus to Lincoln leave from etc. Definitely no “bags” though kid. You know I wouldn’t anyway. I have lost my randiness since leaving you!!
Glad to see you have learned to use the word in your letters. The letter was waiting for me in the mess when I went down after being paid. You don’t know how much I look forward to recieving [sic] those darling. I do really.
Donald, by the way, has paid me my 3 quid

and the way I’m saving now I’ll be able to get married before I know what I’m doing – If the boys wanted a stamp I used to let ‘em have it, use my boot polish, shaving cream and hosts of other small things. Now I charge them for stamps – hide my boot polish and come out with an emphatic NO when asked for other things. You see my darling – you are making a real Scotsman of me. But Heaven knows – don’t I like it. From you I mean of course.
We had an awfully

Darling, why can’t we be together while we’re having all this glorious weather.
I only wish it could be so and, sweet, I know for sure you do too. And that alone gives me the most marvellous feeling.

I wrote another Air-Graph to mother lunch time and a letter tonight enclosing some post-cards which will undoubtedly interest her. I’m doing quite well in fact with my mail home now aren’t I?
Giving myself a huge pat on the back now aren’t I. I think the [deleted] [indecipherable word] [/deleted] pleasant surrounding are more conducive to letter writing anyway.
Pet, there isn’t any more news to write you but I could fill pages telling you I love you but I wouldn’t be able

Hello Darling Pet,
Many thanks for your letter which I received today – and I don’t think it was moany. I caught the train back to camp O.K and passed Donald before he got to the station. Subsequently it fell to me to buy the tickets. Hell it hurt.
It was late when we got into camp – well reasonably – and I didn’t [deleted] fell [/deleted] ?!!! [sic] feel like eating so what did I do? I didn’t

P/O Hallett was waiting for us with that wicked gleam in his eye – you know. A few minutes after duty and I left town yesterday the transport arrived to take us to Bardney. Midge and Johnny went? [sic] (came) and took our baggage with them.
Anyway – the bus picked us up about 10 O’clock this morning and so here we are. Oh! darling, I forgot to tell you we picked our mail up early this morning (I had to sort the

whole station mail to get it) so that’s how I happened to get your letter. You know we didn’t get out here until 2.30 and by the time we’d had a feed it was 3.30. We reported to the “Boss” then and were calmly informed that we were doing a x [cross] country trip tonight. Yours truly had to see the M.O, who has again grounded me and made me report 3 times day for testament.
Can’t you see how ill your old hubby is darling. He’s on his last legs. Nearly.

The trains run fairly well to and from Lincoln from here sweet so I should be able to see you reasonably often. Because the others have been I mean – are going to fly I am responsible for getting a [indecipherable word], blankets, sheets, cleaning up and making beds and God knows what for the boys. I am on my last legs now darling and still have loads of work to do. I hear the crew taking off now. I hope your mops didn’t “dress you

Darling – I was in a silly mood last night and today. I have been feeling a real pig about it. Will you forgive me angel. I must finish this before I get to the bottom of the page – anyway I’d have to there’s no news.
Night for now darling one. Hundreds & hundreds of X’s

Hello Darling,
This was as far as I got when I decided to ‘phone you. Now I feel heaps and heaps better.
What do you think of this wind Pet? I’ve been running around with my hair down over my eyes today. Gee! but does it annoy me. Both the wind and the hair.
The wind was like this yesterday morning when we were riding back from Lincoln – Newark I mean – and it wasn’t

behind us either.
Don has retained his [underlined] bloody [/underlined] “Mo” but only because we forgot about it until it was almost time to go on parade.
I can imagine how much you would [deleted] have [/deleted] liked to [inserted] have [/inserted] been with us whilst sunbathing. Yes, Bud is skinny – bleedin’ ‘ell yes.
Oh darling, say that again. I mean about the chaps picking on someone their own size and not an old cripple next time they want to wrestle. I was tickled “pink” with that Pet.

I’m awfully glad to hear you went back to bed, yesterday darling. I’m almost on my knees now.
It was about 11-30 when I went to bed last night and was up this morning at 6. I think I’ll be late again tonight too. Oh hell but who cares. I love you just the same darling one.
Our silly old Engineer is singing bloody swing sweet and dancing with himself in the middle of the room.

Dearest, there isn’t any news now and I’m in a bad mood so will say cheers.

My Darling,
Here I am as promised – and I’m not in bed. I decided after a helluva lot of pondering to do a wee drop of washing. I did not – repeat not press my uniform but I did some other ironing. The time by the way is now 11.30!!
Bloody bloody bloody.
I’m awfully sorry darling but sometimes I do swear you know.
Ain’t it cute.
I have just finished writing home Pet so my conscience no longer

pricks me. Not that it ever does much mind you – in spite of what you said this afternoon.
Darling tell me what to write please.
I love your sweetness heaps and heaps and heaps but that isn’t news is it? And you know it anyway so what diff – is it.
Some of the boys came in a few minutes ago and I’ve been gossiping with them for a while but there’s no choice bits which I can tell

you.
Oh! By the way – how do you like my [deleted] S.A.C [/deleted] S.A.F.F.C.F. writing gear?
Y’know – if it was decorated at top ‘n all I’d rather like it.
Darling, I know you’ll be disappointed and I don’t like making you disappointed but I can’t write any more just now.
[deleted] [indecipherable letter] [/deleted] (Bugger!) Do you mind? By hell I’m making some mistakes.
Will say ‘Night for now darling.
All my love and x’s always.

Hello Darling,
I’m awfully sorry I was unable to write last night darling one and my excuse isn’t because I went out because I didn’t – GIT it? No Pet, I was frightfully busy and I had to go to the hospital for treatment which I forgot to tell you about when I spoke to you last.
If I don’t go ([deleted] wh [/deleted] Damn!!!) it isn’t entered in the book and I would then be slapped smartly on the pegs
[page break]

for not attending a parade. That is the reason (and work) I didn’t write you last night.
I rang the office about 5 and some wench told me you had tonsilitis [sic] which aforesaid statement has since been confirmed as being gospel by the receipt of – by me of course – of your two efforts – to write letters.
My sorrow my pigeon, is most acute and my sympathy knows no bounds and knowing what a weak constitution
[page break]

thou hast my lovey Dove I am most grieved to think you will be invalided for a considerable period of time. However, a doctor of most usual talent and accuracy (at knife throwing) and – I hasten to assure you – one of the most loveable characters one could wish to meet (gentle pat on back – becoming harder and faster as the music becomes more sloppy and louder – all coming over the wireless as an afterthought)

has come to my notice and it is my desire and intentions to send “quicker’n bloody ‘ell” to your bedside – poor mite – this MOST remarkable, kindly, gentle, caressing, soothing, lovable old quack whose name is – “ladies and gents Malcolm – Henry – Payne.
Let’s get serious darling Angel. I was awfully sorry to hear you were ailing Pet.
Please get better soon won’t you. I go and get a dose 3 times daily and I believe

I’m feeling slightly better for it all.
They haven’t posted us yet but I think it will come off by tomorrow. Send any letters to the above address won’t you sweet and they’ll reach me after only a couple of days.
What do you think Pet. Bud got his Commission today and is he pleased with “hisself”.
I got bags of mail yesterday from mother and a couple of cables back which I sent a

week ago. They have suspended the service.
Today I recd. two from you – one from Rosemary? one from another girl, one from her brother and one from my brother.
Wizzo what. And I’ve answered all of them. I reckon it’s pretty good going.
I didn’t tell you why I didn’t come in tonight did I. Work it out darling.
This is all for now my darling. Night Night.
All my very best of best love darling
Ever yours

Dearest Darling Angel,
At least this is a start but the big question is can I find enough news to make a letter of it. I’ll try.
Was ever so pleased and thrilled to recieve [sic] you [sic] two letters today Pet. I only hope you have had at least one of mine.
I won’t send you a quid in this darling because I’m coming in Monday night and you will have only just got this letter by then.
Do you mind sweet? Was it by any chance you who you were talking about kid when you said there
[page break]

was a very sad grass widow firewatching the other night. I’m awfully sorry her “hubby” had to leave her. I am really. Quite amusing you following that up by saying it was frightfully cold in bed these nights. I quite agree darling one and I think it’s high time something was done about it!!? xxx
By this time Pet you will have “had” Nottingham and will be back in Lincoln again. Gee but I honestly wish I was with you. It’s only 3 days since I’ve seen
[page break]

you and it seems an eternity.
I would have loved to seen the “old couple” when Skinny came out dressed prettily in her new frock and looking coyly at Dougie
Anyway – I’m glad Douglas was “Frilled pink [indecipherable word [inserted] [underlined] (mummy) [/underlined] [/inserted]”
Darling, I’m terribly sorry I was unable to ring you this morning and more disappointed than is imaginable. I know you were disappointed too Pet.
The ‘phone number in the mess while I remember it is East Stoke 200.
But I’ll be ringing you mostly so you’ll

only have need for it on Sundays. An explanation of why I never rang this a.m. – We never finished lectures ‘till 12.45. We were still at ‘em at 5.30 tonight too. Have to have all these bloody exams over again too. Most of the work here is vastly different from that at Wigsley [deleted] [indecipherable word] [/deleted] [inserted] [underlined] Censored [/underlined] [/inserted] in that every concieveable [sic] thing (almost) is being modified which of course makes it all work differently.
Almost the end of the page four and I’m doing fine aren’t I? Have heaps more news all loaded up in my old scone yet.
[page break]
xxxxx
Ah! darling, before I forget – I filled in some papers of next of kin etc., when I came here and in a space marked – “other persons to be notified of Casualty (If any)” – I put – Miss Doris Weeks Lincoln etc. so that is all arranged and you need not worry about anything Pet.
I haven’t long had supper (such as it was) and the appetite for that was worked up by 3 halves of Lemonade [deleted]fl [/deleted] followed by a brisk game of billiards with the old Midge.
While in the
[page break]
xxxxxx
mess I bumped into a French-Englishman with whom I trained at Silverstone. Boy oh boy! But has he been in any strife. He’s spent time in the cooler, been sent on discip courses and God knows what. He went to 3 different Con units and has had about 6 crews.
I heard months ago that his first Skipper had gone for a burton and I thought old Red had gone too. Small world after all.
I had some more mail from home today
[page break]
xxxxxxx [circled X]
One was from my “Sister” Doris who by the way is not yet my sister. One I recieved [sic] from Rosemary, and her Mother combined.
Remember her? I hadn’t written to them since the end of last year. Disgraceful I’d call it.
Did my good deed once more today and wrote mother another letter.
Sweet, I think I’ve actually run out of news so will have to say –
Night night.
All my very fondest love always my darling.
Yours Malcolm

Hello again Darling,
Have you recieved [sic] my first letters yet? I guess so. I must warn you this will only be a short and very hurried note because we are flying in a short while. I am not grounded now and can go with the “boys”
We were to have flown last night too but it was cancelled – thank Heaven.
I’ve just realised darling that I’m making a helluva mess of this writing so will take it
[page break]
xx
a little easier and maybe you can read what I have to say and again maybe you can’t being such as bugger of a writer as you say. Cheer up Pet.
You know I can visualise you now with a long face and in a bad mood and waiting for me to come in. The time is about 5.15. Am I right.
I went to Church this morning Sweet and what is more I thoroughly enjoyed it and Jock and I showed the rest when it came to the hymns!!!
Hell! but can’t I hear you laughing at that.
[page break]
xxx
Well go ahead and Scream.
After Church I went to stores and ordered me a new [indecipherable word] material battle dress – then came our feed to wit – dinner.
I was in Lincoln this afty darling. We went swimming down at Sth. Park girls school. Hell but it was great.
Oh! Pet, There isn’t a ‘phone here but you can ring me at the mess between 12.15 and 1 p.m. if you can get through and I think you can. You might try sometime any way.
[page break]
xxxx.
It’s marvellous to be finished training and I feel now that I can settle down for a few months now. They don’t chase and hound a fellow now like they used to when we were juniors.
This is all I can manage for the time my darling so I will say
Cheerio.
All my very fondest love and kisses.

Sweet Pet,
When I say this is going to be a short letter I really mean it and please excuse the paper.
Recd. three letters from you today and read them while flying. One was [deleted] on [/deleted] written at Skegness, on the post card. Thanks heaps Pet.
We took off on our trip last night at 10-30 and didn’t land until 5-30 this morning. Managed to get to bed at about 6.45 – up again at 2-30 and flying again by 3-30. You’d imagine the condition I’m in.

While you’re in a forgiving mood too darling you might try and overlook this writing. Thanks.
This is all [indecipherable word] the time kid and will see you soon as poss.
Night night.

Darling,
This will only be a short note for now as we have [inserted] been [/inserted] and are awfully pushed for time since we started ops. I was glad you rang today – I couldn’t ring you and haven’t been able to get a letter away as you know. I have just written to Mother today, first time since Saturday.
We went to Duisburg Line as you probably know by the papers. Got back at daylight and to bed about 7, up at 12 and getting our kite in [indecipherable word] for [indecipherable name] – I shouldn’t write any of it -. We went to bed yesterday at almost 8 up at 1 and to

bed at 4 o’clock again. Don and Midge foolishly went out last night. Midge was going to phone you for me last night but was too late getting to town.
We have one more to do after tonight probably and we get 7 days leave.
I’ll be in to see you as soon as I can darling and please don’t worry too much.
I have cooled down and forgiven you now Pet but I was really mad when you rang that day. I went to Waddo that night and just moped around the next night doing nothing.
[page break]
xxx
You shouldn’t have sent me that quid Angel – I don’t want it. Recd. my watch today too. It has been at the P.O. for a couple of days but I didn’t have time to get it. Thanks heaps. I think I will send it home now.
Well old kid – this is all I have time to write now so will have to say adios for now.
Oh! Don’t ring the mess tomorrow until 1/4 to 2 if you intend to ring at all.
Bye for now.
All my love darling

[deleted] Hello [/deleted]
My Dearest Darling,
Only a little weeny teeny note for now.
There isn’t anything very important to tell you just yet ‘cept I love you. xxx.
“Midge” hasn’t come back yet the bloody idiot and though we were on the battle order for tonight we can’t go because of him.
I’ll bet it’ll be a nice little short French do too. (Notice that word “do”). Ever hear of it?
Anyway – to continue – It will probably mean a court marshall for the “wheely”
[page break]

bugger and it’ll do him OK. – good I mean.
It’s a very serious thing to miss Ops.
I have been thinking I should have stayed in the mess a while longer in case you rang but I don’t really expect you would today. Right darling?
Another 600 cigs. Arrived for me this morning – isn’t it just too grand.
Somebody grabbed the new kite when it came in and we are still left without a plane. Wouldn’t it!
[page break]
xxx.
Isn’t it a miserable old day Pet. It cheeses me off slightly and I really haven’t the strength to go out into this wind.
Seriously though I don’t feel to [sic] bad apart from a small amount of randiness! Yes it’s true too. Oh hell!!!!
Must finish now darling one – and – [underlined] Please [/underlined] don’t worry too much. Everything is all right.
Bye for now Chic.
All my love and x’s
Yours.

My Darling,
I am in the Anteroom waiting for briefing – Ah! they want me to go to the hut so hang on a mo’ and I’ll be with you again.
Well I’m here. And darling, isn’t it a filthy night but they’ll send us just the same, [deleted] but [/deleted] in the early hrs. of the morning probably. Anyway this weather isn’t a safe bet to be flying in. I don’t like it. Why worry.

You know my hands are so cold I almost can’t hold my pen. Thanks millions and millions for the gloves Pet.
After you rang today I dived down to the village with my laundry and so back to the old grind again ‘till 3 O’clock when I came back here and snoozed until 4.30.

Hell!! “listing [sic]” to the rain. And it [sic] terrible darling.
It’s just like one of our Winter days at home.
I guess by now you are cuddled up in front of a lovely warm fire reading Waltzing Matilda – time 6.45. Gee! but don’t I wish I were there with you sweetheart.
Last night I went to the camp pictures with young Scotty. “Captain Courage”
Have you seen it? It’s one of the best I’ve ever seen. I think.
Midge came back today and hell I feel

sorry for him. He was quite surprised when he got here and found it should have been Monday morning.
He got home and didn’t look at his leave pass again. They won’t let him fly with us tonight and have him waiting I think for a court marshall. It’s a damned pity – He was just beginning to work hard too.
Darling one – I’m out of gossip, Scandal etc. so will pack in for now.
All my fondest love always.

Dearest Darling,
I know you’re going to be mad Pet when you discover I’m not coming in tonight but please try and forgive wont you. Gee! T’anks. [sic]
I’m so damned worn out that I’m going to try and go to the village and phone you and then crawl into my little bed – there to stay ‘till break of day. In fact long after break of day if I can work it. And I think I can.
We had a fairly

quiet trip last night but it was too long for my liking – almost 8 hrs.
When we came over the English coast coming home we were over cloud and our ack ack opened up at us and by hell it was hot. However, we soon overcame all our troubles.
By the way darling you’re a naughty girl – in more ways than one – I never got a letter from you again today. But you haven’t done too badly this last couple of weeks and you are already forgiven. xx

xxx.
Now isn’t that most condescending of me.
I didn’t tell you but today is a stand down. It’s silly you know – they give us a stand down after two night running and we’re then too worn-out to take full advantage of it.
Did you know I love you darling? xxx I do.
Isn’t anything else to write about for now so it’ll be adious [sic] ‘till next time.
All my fondest love darling and “millions” of x’s
Yours

Sunday
My Darling,
Hell, but I’ll bet you’re sore with me. I’m awfully sorry dearest and I honestly mean it.
Oh damn it all I’m in a fed up mood tonight though. They came around to all our huts this morning – it seemed we’d only just gone to bed – and told us to get up immediately prepared to fly and have our meal -which we did. At one O’clock flying was temporarily cancelled.
[page break]
xx
We were told to stand by then for flying and we’re still standing by and expect a call about 2 or 3 in the morning. It’s about 11.0. now.
The night before last we went on a trip before sunset and were still flying at sunrise next morning. Everybody had had themselves and had to fly again last night on a murder trip.
We lost 22 of our pals last night.
Darling, you asked me in a letter the other day if I was getting tired of you. I’m not.
[page break]
xxx
Please try and believe me won’t you. I’ll be glad when these bloody Ops. are all over.
I waited in the mess for you to phone today but the rain must have kept you inside.
There isn’t any news to tell you Angel so I guess I’ll go to bed. I’ll come in as soon as I can.
Night for now darling
All my all

Me Darlint,
My Darling.
Beastly isn’t it? Did I hear you say what? Well the weather. It stinks and I don’t mean maybe – just literally.
I’m awfully sorry I was unable to take your call Pet but the fellow who answered it was (or is) a pal of mine (strange that y’know) and I consequently recieved [sic] the message O.K – also the love, for which, thanks
[page break]

and the same to you sweet.
Well – let me tell you what I have done so far. I have been making enquiries and find I can get rooms in a pub costing me sweet nothing for myself and reduced rates for you if I give 12 days (minimum) notice and I have already started proceedings (Sounds awful legal don’t it.)
Anyway, to go on, it’s all under this Nuffield scheme and there is a choice of 4 places or at least 4 pubs at 3 places – namely, Drunken Duck in [deleted] Windermere [/deleted] Ambleside, Wild Boar at [symbol]
[page break]
xxx
and the Barrowdale and County Hotels at Keswick.
I don’t think we should niggle about which one of these it is but of the lot I think I’d prefer the Drunken Duck at Windermere.
What do you think? I’m quite prepared however to take any one of them.
When I find out which one it will be I will write then and find out all about it and at the same time casually find out if there is a [underlined] real old [/underlined] duck there who could write your mum, as that appears to be one of the clauses in this act.
O.K so far?
[page break]
xxxx
Now – tomorrow I’m going to the Adj. and will fill in the necessary forms to bring such a venture to fulfillment [sic] and he will give me bags of help. He’s that kind of chappie.
That’s about all I can tell you about my leave except that I will have to book the Pub for (from the night of the 17th) for 7 days.
I love you darling. xxx
We were on Ops. last night as you’ve already gathered no doubt. It was an awfully long stooge and most monotonous. That’s 15 now.

Darling Pet,
Well I don’t Know what to think – we’ve been mucked around something damnably. Haven’t much time to write you now either, hence the scribble.
Hope you read it O.K.
Sunday night they scrubbed Ops about 7.30 – on Monday night we were out in the Kite and it was scrubbed. [deleted] M [/deleted] No no. – that was Sat & Sun nights. Last night we’d been flying about an hr and were recalled.
Today we flew again
[page break]
and tonight were told to be at briefing room for some mysterious meeting. We had – that – not flying tonight – and now there’s bags of work to be done tonight. Wouldn’t it wreck one!
Have been recieving [sic] letters from you O.K. Pet. Sorry I wasn’t in the mess today when you rang.
I love you darling.
Cheerio for now –
All my love Pet
