Potter Hill
Collingham
Newark.
Tuesday 2nd July
Dear Daddy,
So glad to hear that Vesuvious has been in eruption [drawing]. We are very busy now we’ve heard the news. [drawing] We got out pick axes [drawing] spades etc, rolled up our sleeves & set to work to fell a few weeds [drawing] Harry got out the reaper & cut the lawn [drawing]. Mary & I unearthed a few weeds [drawing] & mother got a pick axe & unloaded the soil [drawing]. Unfortunately Mary got lost in a bed of giant goose-grass & hasn’t been seen since; Harry ran over an ant-hill & was knocked off the reaper falling with his head on a boulder & has been taken to Newark Hospital
[page break]
2
After vain efforts to get her pick-axe into the soil mother suddenly struck a large rabbit hole & her axe went right through & mother was so taken unawares that I regret to say fell in & got lost in that gloomy subterranean passage. Anyway I told my old friend Moses the mole to tell her, if he saw her, to come up & see me some time. So now there’s only me left & I only just escaped to tell the tale for I came across a huge spider [drawing] set on me & but for my Indian Game, would have dined on me, but they, seeing a friend in need & rushed up & killed him.
Out of those five there will be two cocks [drawing] two hens [drawing] & one angel [drawing]
The other two are beauties. [drawing] One about 90% pure I.G. & the other 75%
Gosh! “Have you ever seen a dream walking?”
[page break]
3
Well there cometh one on ye lawn. Yea verily: [drawing] Behold! it cometh with Moses ye mole. Surely I know ye large proboscis which sticketh out of ye muck [drawing] Why tis Mother! So Moses & I took her & put her in the bath & turned on the tap [drawing] & now she’s O.K. again sticking like billy-ho er I mean William Hoe.
Most folks are cutting their seeds now - ! Whatever! Is yon walking weed that standeth on the lawn? [drawing] I will investigate [drawing] Poor Mary you know what a terrible habit goose-grass has? [drawing] Well then you’ll imagine what she was like. Bessie rescued her & poor dog she’s covered with its seeds.
In your next letter will you please give instructions for Harry to let some one see to the chicken pen (No 2 old hens’ pen).? The
x x x x x x x x x x is true!!!
[page break]
4
The beast go over the barbed wire, knock down & trample on the other wire [drawing] & make a mess of everything. Mary does her utmost to keep them out but they just walk in again while Mary nearly weeps & begs Harry to get some more barbed-wire put up &c but he “don’t care” so will you please tell him? Whoo! Here comes a mummy [drawing]. I’ll unravel it to see whats in side. Lawks a lummy its Harry all wrapped up. I knew they wouldn’t keep him long at the hospital.
Well it’s eight o’clock, so, know that my romance is brought to a happy ending I’ll close
Yours (UN) truly
Billy

Dear Daddy

Walter Wells £12 ..15s
B. Renshaw £10 .. 15s
F. Cook £10 .. 0s.

Morris Sheldon bought Nancy. He’s keeping her ‘till Christmas. The Co’op Butcher wanted her too. Harry took her round. Crowds of folks came to look at her & asked if she had to go through the auction. We had her graded (M Sheldon paid). Substiby [sic] £1 .. 17s 6d. Total price £17 .. 7s .. 6d. Mrs Fitz Herbert asked me how much I thought she’d make I told her Harry said £15. She said if she made £12 I should do well. Charlie Bird charged 14/- for the 6. Harry & a lot more rode in with calves
About messed up when they came out. Of course Nancy was.
Mary & I took the 7 pigs. They made 26/6 each. £9.5s 6d altogether I think we had a good (& certainly busy) day Harry drew £26 .. 1s .. 6d. Newark [underlined] very [/underlined] busy.
Battles have just brought 10 buckets & 1 drum of sheep dip
Got 14 more gibs (so far) that makes 51. The biggest are beauties. [drawing of a bird]

Well I’ll feed the gibs etc.

Dear Mum,
I intended enclosing this surplus cash last time but forgot. Don’t like carrying it around. Would you ask Dave to get some more certificates if he is up again? There should be £7. there. Should be saving a lot more now on 7/6 a day & with nothing to spend it on.
Nothing at all to write about. Its [sic] pouring with rain as usual. Have written to Harry and Ros & enclosed letter.
Looking forward to seeing you in a few month’s time.
Love to all

I’m having to do with the old goose – very unwillingly – like I do with the broodies. Keep her shut up all day & let her out for 15-20 mins at night & then send her back. If I left door open Mrs Grey would go on too & if I didn’t send the old goose off she wouldnt [sic] go. [Sketch of hen and eggs] Skegness is so Bracing. Thursday 23.4.42.
Dear Mum,
Just got your letter. If I hurry up with this I shall get it off on tonight’s post. Afraid I shan’t be in Newark until 11.30 pm on Saturday. It does seem crazy as I shan’t know what to do with myself all Saturday but orders are that we are only allowed to travel on the 5.30 from here. I may be able to disappear & get the bus to Lewes & catch an earlier train there.
Had our Navigation Theory & Met. Papers today. The Nav. Paper was extremely hard, but the met was a treat. Tomorrow morning we get plotting – and the medical in the afternoon. I passed in all the practical subjects
Looks like being a massed Christening!
Must get this posted, & then some tea.
Looking forward to a week’s rest Think we may be home for 3 weeks after that.
See you 11.30 Sat night.

Tues. 7.4.42.
Dear Mum,
Decided to come home on Friday after all – just couldn’t keep away – so I’ll be on the 11.20 ar [sic] Newark on Friday night. If there’s nobody to meet me I can easily hitch-hike home. I’ll be coming home on 7 days a fortnight on Saturday I expect.
Hope you all had a good Easter. Did the girls get to Warsop? I did wish I could have been home for Easter – even more than Christmas. Still I guess plenty of people would have been glad to be here for Easter. Eastb. was quite crowded over the weekend. Weather was grand. Went to chapel twice on Sun. & a walk over the downs in the afternoon. Worked all Sat. and Monday as usual. Had all the holiday crowds watching us do P.T. yesterday afternoon. I quite had stage fright. We thought of going round with the hat!
Must get on with some work – see you Sat. Hope you’re not going out anywhere.

Got Mary’s letter & Ros’s today.

[Underlined] Friday [/Underlined]
At last managed to find out definitely about Posting. There’s a posting of 132 observers to E’bn tomorrow morning but I’m the only one of our crowd included. Only about 10 from our flight going. Why I’m included so soon I don’t know but its [sic] annoying to think that I’ll be separated from the others. That means that [deleted] none [/deleted] I’m left with more of the old “A” flight from [indecipherable word].
Still no letters this morning. Think they must have lost it.
Will send new address immediately I know it.
