Visitors from famous Dambusters’ squadron
A Long Eaton man will be among a group of wartime fliers from 617 Squadron – The Dambusters – who are due to visit Matlock on Saturday, the 33rd anniversary of their successful attack on the German battleship Tirpitz which eliminated a major threat to the Russian convoys.
He is Mr. Ernie Twells D.F.C., of 2 Abbot Street, Long Eaton, who was a flight engineer with 617 Squadron and took part in all three strikes against the Tirpitz.
Members of the 617 Squadron Association are visiting the county at the invitation of Coun. Norman Wilson, chairman of he [sic] county council and himself a former R.A.F. jet fighter pilot.
LEGENDARY
Said Coun. Wilson: “I am delighted that the association was able to accept my invitation. It is appropriate that links should be forged between us because the squadron used the Derwent Dams during training for the legendary raid on the Rhur dams and of course Rolls-Royce engines powered their Lancasters.
There are already links between the present 617 Squadron and our social services department. Groups of problem youngsters have visited the squadron at R.A.F. Scampton in Lincolnshire. The visits have been beneficial and a regular programme has been arranged.”
Membership of the 617 Squadron Association is confined to aircrew who flew operationally with the squadron between its foundation in early 1943 and the end of the war in May 1945. There are 260 members scattered across the world.
The squadron wrote itself into aviation history on the night of May 16, 1943 with the Dambusters raid, using the bouncing bomb invented by Barnes Wallis who spent part of his early life at Ripley.
The Tirpitz operation began 14 months later, again using a Barnes Wallis bomb – the 12,000 lb Tallboy.
The 43,000 ton battleship, sister to the Bismarck, was lying in a Norwegian fiord from where it threatened the Russian convoys. This meant that British battleships had always to be hovering in the background in case the Tirpitz came out. not for nothing was she nicknamed the “Big Bad Wolf” by escort commanders.
The Royal Navy attacked with midget submarines and although two huge mines were exploded under the Tirpitz she did not sink.
SMOKE SCREEN
Then on September 15 617 Squadron staged their first raid. First they flew to Russia to get within range of their quarry in Alten Fiord. But the attack was thwarted by a smoke screen that hid the battleship within minutes.
The squadron returned to England but when the Tirpitz moved south to Tromso a second attack was mounted. Extra fuel tanks and more powerful engines were fitted to the Lancaster bombers but this time cloud hampered the bombing.
It was to be third time lucky on November 12. With German fighters from a nearby station failing to intervene, no cloud and no smoke, 617 Squadron made a perfect attack. Three Tallboys smashed into the Tirpitz and she rolled over and out of the war.
Leading the 20 members of the association will be Group Capt. J.B. Tait, who led all three raids on the Tirpitz. Wtih [sic] him will be seven members of the attacking aircrews together with survivors from the Dambusters’ raid.
After a reception and buffet lunch at County Offices, the party will visit Chatsworth House at the invitation of the Duke of Devonshire.

DAMBUSTERS HONOURED
MEMBERS of the 617 Squadron Association – the Dambusters – have had many honours conferred on them over the years, but Saturday as [sic] the first time they had been honoured by an English county when they visited Matlock.
The occasion was the 33rd anniversary of the squadron’s successful attack of the German prize battleship Tirpitz which eliminated a major threat to Russian convoys.
Twenty members of the association and 70 other guests went to the county offices at the invitation of County Council chairman, Councillor Norman Wilson, himself a former jet fighter pilot.
He presented Group Captain Willy Tait, the officer who commanded 617 Squadron and led the three attacks on the Tirpitz, with a solid silver salver, and Mr Tait handed over the 617 Squadron crest and a photograph of a painting of the Tirpitz raid.
Among the guests were Sir Denning Pearson, former Rolls - Royce chairman and in charge of the technical department during the 1939 – 45 war, Mr Eric Dyer, East Midlands Airport director and president of the Derby branch of the RAF Association, and Derbyshire’s Chief Constable, Mr Walter Stansfield.
Among the local members of the association were Mr Ernie Twells (68), of Abbott Street, Long Eaton, and his wife, Doris. Mr Twells took part in all three raids as a flight engineer.
The party had lunch at Matlock before taking up an invitation by the Duke of Devonshire to visit Chatsworth Park.
From left: Group Captain Tait, Mrs Twells, Mr Twells, Councillor Wilson and Mrs Wilson.

Flight Lieutenant Bob Knights
[italics] Pilot who bombed the Tirpitz three times and became a training captain with British Airways [/italics]
Knights (third from left) with his crew from 619 Squadron at Woodhall Spa on December 20 1943, just before taking off for a raid on Frankfurt
FLIGHT LIEUTENANT BOB KNIGHTS, who has died aged 83, flew his Lancaster bomber of No 617 Squadron on the three major attacks against the [italic] Tirpitz [/italic] that culminated, on November 12 1944, in the sinking of the powerful German battleship which had dominated British and American naval strategy in the European theatre.
With a firm foothold on the European continent, the Allies were anxious to deploy their naval forces to other theatres, but the threat posed by the [italic] Tirpitz [/italic] prevented this. Churchill pressed incessantly for the destruction of the “beast”, as he called her. Bomber Command and the Royal Navy had mounted many attacks against the battleship, and some damage had been inflicted; but the ship was still capable of making dangerous forays against the convoys to Russia.
In September 1944 Lancaster bombers of Nos 9 and 617 Squadrons were sent to attack the battleship with the 12,000-lb Tallboy bomb and mines. [italic] Tirpitz [/italic] was moored in Alten Fjord in the extreme north of Norway, beyond the range of the Lancasters operating from Scotland, so the force flew to Yagodnik, near Archangel, on September 11.
Knights and his crew were were [sic] accommodated on a houseboat, where bedbugs were their main companions. Four days later, Wing Commander Willie Tait, the CO of No 617, led the force to attack the battleship, but their efforts were thwarted by a dense smokescreen. Knights lost an engine over the target and returned to Yagodnik with his bomb still on board.
The Germans moved [italic] Tirpitz [/italic] south to Tromso, which put her just within range of the airfields in northern Scotland, from where another attack was mounted on October 29. The bombers faced heavy anti-aircraft fire, but Knights was able to drop his bomb, which landed very close and rocked the battleship. He remained circling the target as other bombs fell around the ship. Reconnaissance photographs suggested that the battleship remained intact, but, unknown to the Allies, she had sustained sufficient damage to render her no longer a threat.
On November 12 the bomber force carried out their third attack, this time in perfect weather.
Knights dropped his Tallboy, which was “a very near miss”, then descended to low level and flew around the ship, which he saw roll over on to her side after three direct hits. Short of fuel, Knights landed at a small fighter airfield at Peterhead. It was his last bombing operation of the war.
The crews of Nos 9 and 617 received a number of decorations, with Knights being awarded the DSO.
The son of a carpenter, Robert Edgar Knights was born on January 18 1921 at Fulham, London. He attended Fulham School for Boys, where he excelled at football. He played for the London Schoolboys’ XI that won the Schoolboys’ cup at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea, in 1935. He volunteered for service as a pilot with the RAF and was called up in March 1941.
Knights was trained in America under the “Arnold Scheme”. When flying over Florida, his instructor managed to get them lost and Knights was forced to bale out – a farmer thought he was a German.
After returning to England to complete his training, he was forced to bale out again, badly injuring his hand, when his aircraft crashed through the roof of a barn. He was commissioned six months later.
In June 1943 Knights joined No 619 Squadron flying the Lancaster. Soon afterwards the Battle of Berlin began, and Knights made eight attacks against the “Big City” – Bomber Command’s losses were particularly high. On another occasion he was en route to bomb Hamburg when one of his engines failed shortly after reaching the Dutch coast, and he would have been justified in turning back; but he pressed on and bombed the target successfully. Within six months he had completed his tour of 30 operations and was awarded the DFC.
He and his crew were due for a six-month rest, but decided that they wanted to “do something more challenging”. They volunteered for service with No 617 (Dam Busters) Squadron, and, after an interview with Leonard Cheshire, No 617’s CO, they were taken on.
Cheshire had developed low-level target-marking techniques with No 617 and, with the arrival of Barnes Wallis’s new Tallboy bomb, the squadron specialised in attacking pinpoint targets such as concrete U-boat and E-boat shelters, aero-engines works and the V1 flying bomb sites.
During the lead-up to the Normandy invasion, Knights bombed tunnels, rail marshalling yards and bridges to block German reinforcement routes to the invasion area. The Tallboys, dropped with great accuracy on the target markers by Cheshire and his fellow marker-crews, caused devastating damage. Once the Allies were firmly established in north-west Europe, No 617 turned its attention to the [italic] Tirpitz [/italic].
After flying 67 bombing operations, Knights was rested, and in June 1945 he was seconded to BOAC to fly converted Lancasters on routes to the Middle East and Australia, which the airline was re-establishing.
Knights left the RAF at the end of 1946 to join BOAC, and over the next few years he flew the Argonaut and the Boeing Stratocruiser, the latter on the North Atlantic route. After a spell on the Britannia, Knights converted to jets; he flew the inaugural VC 10 flight to Montreal in 1966. Later he flew the Boeing 747 and was one of the fleet’s training captains. He retired from British Airways in 1976.
A very modest man, Knights gave strong support to RAF charities. He was president of the Guildford branch of the RAFA and a long-standing member of the Aircrew Association. He developed a keen interest in bell-ringing and became captain of the bell tower at St Peter and St Paul at Albury, near Guildford. A good golfer and tennis player, he was also a lifelong supporter of Fulham FC.
Bob Knights died on December 4. In 1947 he married a serving WAAF, Helen Maloney, who survived him with their two sons and a daughter.

Wartime pilot is praised
Dambusters’ pilot Bob Knight has paid tribute to the war service of Mr. Ernest Twells of 2 Abbott Street, Long Eaton, who died recently.
Mr. Twells, who served in the Royal Air Force as a Flight Engineer during the 1939 to 1945 conflict, joined the famous 617 Squadron just after the daring, bouncing bomb raid. But he flew with Mr. Knight on precision raids of pinpoint German factories, U-boat pens, V1 and V2 rocket sites and other special targets.
OWED LIVES
Aged about 34 at the time, Mr. Twells was affectionately referred to as ‘Dad’ by the rest of his crew – the average age of the Dambusters being between 21 and 23.
Speaking of him at a funeral service, Mr. Knight said the crew of his Lancaster bomber ‘Thumper’ knew they owed their lives to Ernest Twells.
“It was,” he stated, “due to his thorough and immaculate knowledge of the flight engineering that we never run short of fuel, even on our longest diversions.”
Originally from Wilford, Mr. Twells, who leaves a widow, Mrs. Doris Twells, a son, Ernest and a daughter, Margaret, first came to Long Eaton in 1937 to work as a race twist-hand at Byard’s.
Rising to management level in his work, which he returned to after the war, Mr. Twells joined the RAF auxiliary in 1938 and was called-up for active service at the outbreak of war.
AWARDED DFC
Serving first as an engine fitter, Mr. Twells was promoted to sergeant and then to flight engineer.
His training in Lancasters began early in 1943 when he served with 619 Squadron at Swinderby and later at Woodhall Spa, from where he took part in 30 raids over Hamburg and Berlin.
While in the Dambusters’ team, Mr. Twells served under the command of Group Captain Len Cheshire and, together with the rest of the team, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for taking part in 70 operations over Germany and other enemy territory.
He was among the crew which sunk the German battle cruiser Tirpitz, sister ship of the Bismark, in the Norwegian Fjiords.
A keen member of the international Dambusters’ Associations, Mr. Twells had attended reunions in many parts of the world, including Canada and Australia.
