The Four Survivors
After the bombing run, at a height of 6000 metres, the aircraft was shot up by an ace
night fighter Leopold Fellerer.
The aircraft caught fire near Oberspree and the navigator and bomb-aimer baled out. After about 15 minutes they landed separately in woodland on the outskirts of Hirschgarten, were captured the next day, and taken to police stations.
Shortly after catching fire, the aircraft went into a spiral dive over Oberspree and above the Kollnische Heide. Somewhere below 2500 metres the fuel in the aircraft exploded. The pilot and rear gunner were ‘blown’ out of the aircraft. Recovering from a semi-conscious state, they opened their parachutes only a 100 metres or so from the ground! They landed in the woodland and were captured the next day. The pilot was taken to Oberspree police station and the rear gunner to a searchlight/flak battery near Oberspree Strasse.
The Four who died
After the explosion, the tail and other bits of the aircraft fell into the Kollnische Heide and the rest of the plane ‘levelled out’ and finally crashed in woodland 4000 metres away, next to Hirschgarten Railway Station,
There were three bodies (second pilot, flight engineer, and mid-upper gunner) in the wreckage. The body of the wireless operator was found 200 metres away.
Initially the wireless operator was buried in Fuerstenwalde New Cemetery and the others in Doberitz Elsgrund Cemetery. After the War, the bodies were removed to the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Charlottenburg.

Dear Mum, Dad & Fmly, [sic] The mail situation is still pretty grim though I must mention that I had a letter 3 days ago from Mr Dickson he is President of the Unilever Boys Club I used to belong to, and he writes occasionally to me. It isn’t a very recent letter, dated Nov. so there’s a big gap in all your mail. From the 5th Aug. I’ve only had one letter from Pat, dated Oct. her mail seems to be hit the hardest. I often wonder what you are all doing at home these days. I suppose life goes on pretty well as usual for you, and the days slip past fairly quickly. I know you must long for the war to end, and after the over-optimism of last year which I feel sure you experienced as well as I did, it must seem to you to be dragging on far too long now. This is the way with me, and I almost count every hour that passes knowing that it is that much nearer the end. It must be obvious to you that our conditions cannot improve very much now, the Red Cross have a difficult job and I think this makes us watch for the end more than ever. The weather too cannot make up its mind whether to see winter out or not, March came in with a vengence, [sic] snow, sleet, rain & wind, when the weather brightens up it will make all the difference here I’m sure. This week we had a windfall, when a truck from Red Cross came in, this will last us for a few days. I’ve been fairly busy as it was my turn for assisting with meals, and I do a spot of Maths and wireless at odd moments, but must admit its only a spot. By the way I hope you have received my cards asking you about my job after war, or opportunities (if any) in Civil Aviation, this is always an important thing in my thoughts. I must end this scrappy epistle now, so cheerio to all, once again – hope to see you soon

Dear Mum, Dad & Fmly, [sic] There’s no sign of any mail from you these days, & I doubt if any will come yet awhile since my recent move, conditions are poor in this direction, & Red Cross Parcels alike. Still the war must end soon and these will be minor items, our cry then will be “Roll on that Boat”. I’m hoping that being here will be an advantage over the other camp in getting home quicker. These days I cannot seem to settle at all, most of the day I’m reading, fiction & other books, life seems much quieter in this camp. The weather is changeable but better, hope to get outside more now. Love to all,

Dear Mum, Dad, & Fmly, [sic] I have been at my new camp just a week now, I hope you have already received my card written on arrival here on Sunday last. Before I say any more I would like you to straighten out something for me, in connection with my accounts. Whilst at Stalag IVB I was not paid any money at all, this being an N.C.O’s camp, and in any case my commission was not recognised by the German Govt. until December last, therefore they would not have any authority to pay me. But I understand the Air Ministry may be deducting pay as from the time I was first taken P.O.W. As from this month onwards I will be receiving pay as a Pilot Officer until official confirmation of Flying Officer comes through. Will you write to Air Ministry and advise them of this, and probably my accounts can be adjusted accordingly. Now for some news of Oflag VIIB, it certainly is much better here, living conditions have improved 100 percent. Of course after Stalag IVB it seems much more quiet. What is good news is that I’ve enjoyed 1/2 Christmas Parcel this week, after not having any food parcels for a few weeks. There is not many of our fellows here at all, mostly Army officers whose Prisoner of War years are 4 times mine, I feel quite a baby beside them. They have been extremely generous with cigarettes and I’ve almost smoked myself to death. I’m messing with 2 Australian chaps at the moment, & they’ve done all the cooking this week in fact I’ve had quite a lazy time. The weather is still poor, though we’ve thawed out now, the scenery too is in complete contrast to the other camp, there it was very flat, it should be pretty in better weather. Well will you let everyone know of my change & Pat of course. Also tell Johnny Bushell’s Mother. Cheerio for now, always thinking of you, love, [underlined] Reg [/underlined]

Dear Mum, Dad & Fmly, [sic] The most important news is that today after a lapse of 5 weeks, I have received 6 letters dated Oct-Nov. 3 from you, Doris & twins, 2 from Herons, & 1 from Mr Devonshire, none from Pat I’m afraid. It’s brightened up my day a thousandfold to get some mail. These past few weeks have been drudgery for me, the parcel situation is still bad, you mention making a big cake for homecoming, well you better use an outsize dustbin for a baking tin! Never mind perhaps all this will end soon, and then I will make up for lost time. Cheerio now, Love to all,

Dear Mum, Dad & Fmly, [sic] Its now just a fortnight since I wrote to you. I’ve had no mail from anyone since those 8 which arrived just before Christmas. Letters seem to be arriving very badly of late, I’m longing for some more news of you all. It does so brighten up this existence, I expect they will turn up in the end, there must be many laying dormant somewhere, and will arrive in one batch. I hope you are now able to send parcels after the temporary suspension in September last. I must consider myself very lucky with regards parcels in comparison to many others, but I think there must be still many of mine around somewhere, including your 1st and 2nd next of kin parcels. Well life here is still as usual only activity is pretty well at a standstill, outside the weather is exceedingly grim and everywhere is deserted, I only go out for walks to get my feet warm about twice a day, for the huts are as correspondly [sic] cold as the weather. Our Theatre has closed down till it warms up again also. Our school opens next week, I’ve only 1 class to attend so I haven’t much to do at the moment. We continue with lectures in the evenings, which are generally interesting and are a welcome break. Food parcels are still awaited from Geneva & we all hope they will come soon, they make life much better. I’m still quite fit & well & I think I’ll remain so. I’ve just finished my week’s washing & I vowed I shan’t do anymore in after life, after this. I hope you are all OK & please remember me to Pat as I cannot write to her this week. Cheerio now, I’m certain I shall be with you very soon now. Love to all. [underlined] Reg [/underlined]

Dear Mum, Dad & Fmly, [sic] Happy New Year to you all at home, & may it bring peace this time. Well its nearly a year since I came to Germany and its a grim thought believe me, thank goodness you cannot foretell the future too much, looking back over the last year seems bad enough, looking ahead for the same thing almost leads to distraction. I think all of us have developed a “Mr Micawber” attitude – waiting for something to turn up – and you all know what that is, lets hope it is not too long, waiting till posterity brings it, cuts more of my years out. 21st Birthday here and now 22nd one and nothing to show for it, except an experience which in my opinion the shorter, the better. I must admit that life here in wintertime has many disadvantages, the days seem long, you’re inside most of the day seem to get in one anothers [sic] way, & its extremely cold, your 2nd next of kin parcel would be handy now if it were here. Perhaps these conditions are the reason for my frame of mind at the moment, but still things might brighten up soon. Over Christmas & New Year we had a good time really, we had a hut show, I saw “Cinderella” in another hut, & New Year we held a dance in the hut, in spite of adverse conditions, and I go to the Theatre next week. Food parcels over Christmas arrived timely, our cooking was above average – our recipes for mince pies, Christmas cake & pudding would enlighten you immensely. The future looks black though unless “something turns up” in the way of food. The Red Cross is our guiding star they are more than wonderful. I do not know when (if it does) our school will open but its hard to do anything lately. Cheerio now, don’t worry this letter is binding, but you know me, its my nature. Love to all at home.
