MINISTRY OF PENSIONS
Norcross, Blackpool, Lancs.
[crest]
26 October 1951
Dear Madam,
With reference to your application in respect of your son the late Aubrey William Read, I am pleased to inform you that pension at the rate of £52 a year has been awarded to you with effect from 24th August, 1951.
The pension has been assessed on the information given by you and should there be an improvement in your circumstances you should inform this Office.
It should be noted that pensions to female dependants cease on marriage or re-marriage.
This pension is payable monthly or quarterly in arrear by His Majesty's Paymaster General, Paymaster General's Office, Russell Square House, Russell Square, London, W.C.1, to whom application for payment should be made as soon as possible on the accompanying form 10/153.
Yours faithfully,
J. Standen
for Secretary
Mrs. M. Read,
53, Carholme Road,
LINCOLN.
[inserted] W.Pen 35/- 26/6/1949 – Full Name Charles William Read. Age 59. [/inserted]
[page break]
Paymaster General's Office,
Russell Square House,
Russell Square.
W.C.1.
1 Nov 1951
PENSIONS TO WIDOWS, RELATIVES AND OTHER DEPENDENTS OF DECEASED OFFICERS OF THE ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE AND MERCANTILE MARINE.
To Mrs. M. Read
A supply of forms to enable you to claim your pension for the period to 31 December 1951 is enclosed. The amount payable is shown on each for. The forms must be presented through a Bank, like crossed cheques.
PAYMENTS. The pension is payable in arrear: and, as you are aware, you have already been given the choice between drawing it monthly and quarterly. The calculations (see over) are made on a quarterly basis; but, if you have decided to draw the pension monthly you will receive in each of the first two months of the quarter an advance of approximately 8 per cent. of the annual rate. The balance due for the quarter will then be payable to you at the expiration of the third month, less any Income Tax which may be due from you (see below).
Where the forms issued provide for an attested declaration, such declaration must be signed by the Pensioner in the presence of a qualified attestor – vide list on the reverse side of the forms.
[underlined] In no circumstances should any form be signed or attested before the LAST day of the month, quarter or period for which payment is claimed (whether a Sunday or a week-day). [/underlined] This point is important (since it is necessary to have proof that you were alive on that day) and if you fail to comply with this instruction your claim will be liable to be disallowed.
You should be careful to complete the forms according to the directions printed thereon. Errors or omissions will cause delay in payment.
INCOME TAX. Your total Pension is assessable as earned income.
The assessment is made by [deleted] the Chief [/deleted] [inserted] H.M. [/inserted] Inspector of Taxes, [deleted] Department Claims Branch, [/deleted] [inserted] (P.D.7) [/inserted] Littlewood's Buildings, Edge Lane, Liverpool, 7., and you should address to him any enquiry about it.
The deductions required to give effect to the assessments are, however, made by the Paymaster General at the moment when the Pensions are being paid, [inserted] under P.A.Y.E. [/inserted][
[deleted] An endeavour is made to collect the Tax as nearly as possible in equal quarterly deductions: but in practice this is not always feasible. Until the precise Tax Liability for the year has been calculated by the Chief Inspector, the Paymaster General makes provisional quarterly deductions – normally on the basis of the deductions made in respect of the preceding year.
When the form for the initial instalment of Pension is being issued to a new pensioner, it may happen that the deduction to be made has not been notified by the Chief Inspector. In this event, the instalment is paid without any deduction for Income Tax and the deductions from subsequent quarters will be increased accordingly. [/deleted]
REMARRIAGE. Your pension ceases on remarriage. If you remarry you should at once notify this Office, and return all unused Pension forms.
SUPPLY AND CUSTODY of FORMS. The forms enclosed should be kept in a place of security, as duplicates will not be issued without a satisfactory explanation of the loss of the original vouchers.
Application for further forms should be made on the appropriate form sent herewith, when the present supply is exhausted.
ADDRESS. Any change of permanent address should be specially notified to the Paymaster General. Changes of address shown on the payment forms are not recorded.

IMPERIAL WAR GRAVES COMMISSION,
Wooburn House, Wooburn Green,
High Wycombe, Bucks
[Crest]
20 OCT 1950
Dear Sir or Madam,
I venture to ask for your assistance in completing the attached form.
The Imperial War Graves Commission have been entrusted, for this war as for the last, with the duty of permanently commemorating those members of His Majesty's Naval, Military and Air Forces from all parts of the British Empire who die in the service of the Allied cause. The Commission will consequently be responsible for marking and caring for the graves, or, in the case of those who have no known grave, for making provision for other suitable form of commemoration and also for recording all names in permanent Registers. This work will be carried out at the cost of the Commission, whose funds are provided by all the Governments of the Empire.
A headstone of the same simple pattern will, as before, mark each grave; thus every man rich or poor, General or Private, will be honoured in the same way.
In order to carry out these duties, and to complete the permanent Registers, the Commission desire certain additional information which they hope you will be so good as to supply on the attached for, which should then be returned to the Commission.
You will notice that a space has been left on the form for a personal inscription to be selected by the relatives, if they so desire, for engraving on the headstone. Where, owing to the course of military operations, it has so far been impossible to find or identify a grave, no personal inscription should be inserted on the form. Should the grave eventually be discovered, I shall, of course, write to you again, and you will then have a further opportunity to choose an inscription.
Some relatives have expressed the wish to pay for this personal inscription, and an opportunity will be given to them later on of meeting the cost. Should they not wish to do so, the cost will be borne by the Commission.
Owing to increase in the cost of engraving Personal Inscriptions since the attached form was printed, the amount which may be paid by relatives has been raised from 7s. 6d. To £1.
Yours faithfully,
F. HIGGINSON,
Secretary.

[compliments slip]
The Under Secretary of State for Air presents his compliments to Mrs. C. W. Read, and begs to forward herewith photographs of cross marking the grave of No. 50611 Flying Officer Aubrey William Read. These have been received from the Army Graves Service, who are responsible for the temporary marking of war graves.
Temporary crosses will be replaced in due course by permanent headstones to be erected by the Imperial War Graves Commission. Details of the inscription on the temporary cross will be carefully checked at that stage and any errors rectified before the permanent headstone is erected.
