MINISTRY OF PENSIONS
Norcross, Blackpool, Lancs.
[crest]
26 October 1951
Dear Madam,
With reference to your application in respect of your son the late Aubrey William Read, I am pleased to inform you that pension at the rate of £52 a year has been awarded to you with effect from 24th August, 1951.
The pension has been assessed on the information given by you and should there be an improvement in your circumstances you should inform this Office.
It should be noted that pensions to female dependants cease on marriage or re-marriage.
This pension is payable monthly or quarterly in arrear by His Majesty's Paymaster General, Paymaster General's Office, Russell Square House, Russell Square, London, W.C.1, to whom application for payment should be made as soon as possible on the accompanying form 10/153.
Yours faithfully,
J. Standen
for Secretary
Mrs. M. Read,
53, Carholme Road,
LINCOLN.
[inserted] W.Pen 35/- 26/6/1949 – Full Name Charles William Read. Age 59. [/inserted]

Paymaster General's Office,
Russell Square House,
Russell Square.
W.C.1.
1 Nov 1951
PENSIONS TO WIDOWS, RELATIVES AND OTHER DEPENDENTS OF DECEASED OFFICERS OF THE ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE AND MERCANTILE MARINE.
To Mrs. M. Read
A supply of forms to enable you to claim your pension for the period to 31 December 1951 is enclosed. The amount payable is shown on each for. The forms must be presented through a Bank, like crossed cheques.
PAYMENTS. The pension is payable in arrear: and, as you are aware, you have already been given the choice between drawing it monthly and quarterly. The calculations (see over) are made on a quarterly basis; but, if you have decided to draw the pension monthly you will receive in each of the first two months of the quarter an advance of approximately 8 per cent. of the annual rate. The balance due for the quarter will then be payable to you at the expiration of the third month, less any Income Tax which may be due from you (see below).
Where the forms issued provide for an attested declaration, such declaration must be signed by the Pensioner in the presence of a qualified attestor – vide list on the reverse side of the forms.
[underlined] In no circumstances should any form be signed or attested before the LAST day of the month, quarter or period for which payment is claimed (whether a Sunday or a week-day). [/underlined] This point is important (since it is necessary to have proof that you were alive on that day) and if you fail to comply with this instruction your claim will be liable to be disallowed.
You should be careful to complete the forms according to the directions printed thereon. Errors or omissions will cause delay in payment.
INCOME TAX. Your total Pension is assessable as earned income.
The assessment is made by [deleted] the Chief [/deleted] [inserted] H.M. [/inserted] Inspector of Taxes, [deleted] Department Claims Branch, [/deleted] [inserted] (P.D.7) [/inserted] Littlewood's Buildings, Edge Lane, Liverpool, 7., and you should address to him any enquiry about it.
The deductions required to give effect to the assessments are, however, made by the Paymaster General at the moment when the Pensions are being paid, [inserted] under P.A.Y.E. [/inserted][
[deleted] An endeavour is made to collect the Tax as nearly as possible in equal quarterly deductions: but in practice this is not always feasible. Until the precise Tax Liability for the year has been calculated by the Chief Inspector, the Paymaster General makes provisional quarterly deductions – normally on the basis of the deductions made in respect of the preceding year.
When the form for the initial instalment of Pension is being issued to a new pensioner, it may happen that the deduction to be made has not been notified by the Chief Inspector. In this event, the instalment is paid without any deduction for Income Tax and the deductions from subsequent quarters will be increased accordingly. [/deleted]
REMARRIAGE. Your pension ceases on remarriage. If you remarry you should at once notify this Office, and return all unused Pension forms.
SUPPLY AND CUSTODY of FORMS. The forms enclosed should be kept in a place of security, as duplicates will not be issued without a satisfactory explanation of the loss of the original vouchers.
Application for further forms should be made on the appropriate form sent herewith, when the present supply is exhausted.
ADDRESS. Any change of permanent address should be specially notified to the Paymaster General. Changes of address shown on the payment forms are not recorded.

[underlined] TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN [/underlined]
It is with much pleasure that I testify to the character and ability of Mr A. W. Read.
For the past four or five years I have been in close and constant contact with him and have invariably found him to be industrious, capable and thorough, whilst his honesty and integrity are beyond doubt.
I am confident that Mr Read will fulfil the duties devolving upon him in his new sphere not only conscientiously and with a strict sense of duty, but also in a manner which will bring credit to the Service and to himself.
I am,
Yours faithfully,

P.411125/S.14 (Cas.) 18th January, 1955.
Dear Mrs. Read,
Thank you for your letter dated 10th January.
The responsibility for the erection of permanent headstones is that of the Imperial War Graves Commission, Wooburn House, Wooburn Green, High Wycombe, Bucks. I am therefore sending a copy of your letter to the Secretary of the ``commission, who will no doubt reply to you direct and confirm whether or not the headstone has been erected over your son’s grave.
No arrangements have been made to re-photograph graves after the erection of the permanent headstones, and the Department has made no promises to next of kin that such photographs would be provided. It is known, however, that the British Legion, 49, Pall Mall, London S.W.1. has a photographic service in connection with war Graves and would arrange to have a special photograph of your son’s grave taken at a moderate fee.
On receiving confirmation from the Imperial War Graves Commission that your son’s headstone has been erected, you may therefore like to address an enquiry to the British Legion.
I would like to suggest, however, that you postpone placing an order for a photograph until the spring or early summer, when conditions are obviously more suitable.
Yours sincerely, [signature] M. Crabbe [/signature]

IMPERIAL WAR GRAVES COMMISSION,

Ref. 24th January 1955
Dear Madam,
The Commission have received from the Air Ministry your letter of 10th January in respect of the late Flying Officer A.W. Read.
I am able to inform you that the headstone has now been erected over your son’s grave in Durnbach War Cemetery, Germany, and the inscription chosen by you has been engraved as under:-
“I BARE YOU ON EAGLES’ WINGS, AND BROUGHT YOU UNTO MYSELF”. EXODUS XIX. 4.
In an earlier letter, the Commission refereed to the desire known to be felt by many relatives to contribute towards the cost of engraving the personal inscription and added that an opportunity to do so would be given to them later. If you had thought of making a contribution, you may send any sum up to £1, which is the average cost of engraving these inscriptions.
I would like, however, to make it clear that relatives are under no obligation to send a contribution unless they wish, and if the Commission do not hear further from you the cost of engraving your inscription will be met from their funds.
Yours faithfully, [signature] N Dean [/signature] Secretary

No. 106 Squadron,
Royal Air Force,
Metheringham,
Lincs.
REB/DO. 29th. November 1943.
Dear Mrs. Read.
I am writing to express my sympathy in the anxiety which must yours upon receipt of the news that your Son, Flying Officer A.W. Read is missing from operations.
He was the Wireless Operator of an aircraft which left here on the night of 26th, November 1943 to take part in a raid on Berlin. Nothing was heard after take-off and I regret the aircraft did not return.
There is absolutely no knowledge of what happened, and one can only assume that the aircraft was a victim of either anti-aircraft fire or fighter. In either case, however, there is a possibility that the crew were able to bale out, and that although prisoners-of-war are quite safe. We all hope that this is indeed the case.
Your Son had taken part in twenty-three bombing raids. He was a Wireless Operator of consierable [sic] ability and I know his Captain placed the greatest reliance in his work.
Once again, both personally and on behalf of the whole Squadron, I offer you my deep sympathy.
Yours truly, R E Baxter
Wing Commander Commanding
[underlined] 106 Squadron, R. A. F. [/underlined]
Mrs. C.W. Read,

Lincoln.

Our Reference MJ/AMS 162 6th December, 1943.
Mrs. C.W. Read.
55 Carholme Road,
Lincoln.
Dear Madam,
The Council of the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund have learnt with much regret that your son is reported missing, and I am asked to express their very sincere sympathy.
It has come to the knowledge of my Committee that in some cases single Officers have been the mainstay of their parents or other relatives up to the time they were reported missing.
As, however, Officers do not make allotments throughofficial [sic] channels there is no official means of finding out whether or not it is likely that the next-of-kin is left in want.
My Committee have therefore decided that however unlikely the need of assistance from this Fund may appear to be, we should at least write and get into touch with parents to see whether anything can be done financially or otherwise.
Should this approach savour of intrusion, I hope you will forgive in the light of the above explanation, and if no temporary assistance is needed, please do not trouble to answer this letter.
Yours truly,
[indecipherable signature]
Squadron Leader,
Joint Secretary.
