Focke-Wulf TA 152.
Known as the ‘Long Nosed’ FW 190. After successful trials Professor Kurt Tank redesignated the aircraft as the TA 152. Structurally there was little difference between the TA 152 & its predecessor. The wings were of slightly larger area & differed in plan form, the nose was cleaned up to give a smoother finish to the top line of the fuselage & hydraulic instead of electrical operation was used for landing gear & flaps.

Focke-Wulf TA 154.
Designed to meet a specification for a night fighter with a high maximum speed & a duration of 2 3/4 hours. Rapid development & quantity production was emphasised together with extensive use of materials not in short supply, particularly wood, as by use of the wood working industry -roduction [sic] could be hastened. Publicised as the German equivalent of the De Havilland Mosquito. Produced as a single seat & a two-seat fighter. Powered by Two Jumo 211N or R 12 cylinder inverted Vee liquid cooled engines.

Focke-Achgelis FA 223.
The Focke Achgelis company was one of two firms which were concerned with Helicopter development during the war. The Fa 223 was first flown in 1940 & was a development of the Fw 61. It had two large non-overlapping rotors driven through reduction gearing by a Bramo BMW 323 engine.
Focke-Achgelis Fa 330 Bachstelze (Water Wagtail).
The location of targets from the low conning tower of submarines in the days before Radar was always a problem, & several countries tried to create a spotter plane that could be dismantled for stowage in small hangars on a submarine deck. Early in 1942 Germany developed a small gyro kite which could be towed aloft by the parent U-boat. Focke Achgelis came up with the Fa 330 which was towed at the end of a 494’ cable, giving the pilot an operating height of 394’, that provided visual radius of 25 miles compared with 5 miles from a conning tower. The big snag being that in the event of a crash dive the Fa 330 had to be cast adrift with the loss of the pilot, hence it was little used although 200 were produced.

Heinkel HE 45.
Designed as a light bomber & long range reconnaissance aircraft during 1931. The new production programme for military aircraft called for 320 HE 45’s by September 1935, & by 1936 was the most widely used of German warplanes. When World War II began the HE 45 was relegated to the training role, but in 1942 a very serious shortage of aircraft suitable for night harassing raids over the Soviet lines resulted in a variety of training & obsolete aircraft being pressed into service. The first such units were formed at Rossosch on the River Don. HE 45’s were first proved in action during the Spanish Civil War as part of the Condor Legion.

Heinkel HE 46.
The HE 46 was evolved in parallel with the HE 45 but as an Army co-operation & short range Reconnaisance [sic] aircraft. The HE46 first flew in 1931 & differed from the HE 45 by having a very different wing arrangement which gave the crew a better all round view. The HE 46 first saw action during the Spanish Civil War & went on to serve in the Second World War firstly in the Polish Campaign & later on the Western & Eastern Fronts.

Heinkel HE 49.
While still a clandestine arm, officially prohibited by the Treaty of Versailles imposed on Germany in 1919, the Luftwaffe ordered a new fighter in the early 1930’s. This resulted in the development of the HE 49A which first flew in 1932, listed as a trainer for the Civil market. Three prototypes appeared paving the way for the HE 51.
Heinkel HE 50.
The vuctorious [sic] German Campaigns in Poland, France & the Low Countries, were destined to be linked in the history of the dive bomber in Aerial Warfare. Heinkel developed the HE 50 as a specialist in this role The Japanese were very interested in the dive bomber & placed an order with Heinkel for the development of the HE 50 able to withstand catapult stresses for operations from warships. China also ordered the HE 50. The HE 50 was operational until 1944 in the Baltic flown by Estonian volunteer aircrew.

Heinkel He 51.
The HE 51 equipped the first fighter unit of the openly declared Luftwaffe from April 1935. The type was also used by the Spanish Nationalists as well as the Condor Legion in the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939. It soon became clear that the HE 51 was obsolescent as a fighter, & it was then used as a ground attack type & training, in the latter role surviving until 1943. About 560 were built. Powered by one BMW V1 12 cylinder liquid cooled engine.

Heinkel HE 59.
On January 1st 1934 the first expansion programme for the clandestine fledgling air arm of the Third Reich was launched. Of the operational types foreseen seven were of Heinkel origin. Amongst these was the HE 59, a twin engined general purpose float seaplane, suitable for torpedo-bombing, naval co-operation & maritime patrolling. The aircraft was designed for operation with either wheel or float undercarriages. Two prototypes were built masquerading as civil transports. The HE 59 first flew in September 1931 & became fully operational during the Spanish Civil War. Used in the Battle of Britain as Air-Sea Rescue aircraft they were suspected of transporting agents into the Thames estuary & of mine laying, & accordingly were shot down. Replaced by Dorner 18’s & 24’s.

Heinkel HE 60.
In the early 1930’s Heinkel designed the HE 60 as a reconnaisance [sic] floatplane suitable for use on Germany’s catapult fitted warships, & the first prototype flew in 1933. Following two further modified prototypes a further 21 were ordered, final production being about 250 aircraft. These served on German battleships & cruisers but by the beginning of the war had been relegated to shore stations, serving for coastal patrol up to 1943. Thereafter they were used for communications & training.

Heinkel HE 100.
Initial service evaluation revealed a number of handling deficiencies, so the three HE 100 pre-production aircraft introduced larger tail surfaces & a revised canopy & retractable ventral radiator instead of the original enclosed system. There followed 12 HE 100D-1 production fighters, but political antipathy to Heinkel ended production at this point & the HE 100d’s were retained for local defence of Heinkel’s Rostock & Marienhe factory. In 1939 six prototypes were sold to Russia & three to Japan.

Heinkel HE 111.
Designed from the outset to fulfil the roles of both bomber & commercial transport without making structural changes, the HE111 appeared in the mid-thirties as a Lightning Services aircraft carrying 10 passengers. It became one of Germany’s mainstay bombers & was used widely in the Polish, Western Europe, & Scandinavian Campaigns. It suffered very heavy losses in the Battle of Britain & by the end of 1940 was gradually being replaced in the west by Junker 88’s. Defensive armament, despite including cannon as well as machine guns was insufficient for unescorted operations. Bomb load was only 5500lbs & range & altitude not good enough for strategic operations. Nevertheless the HE 111 continued night bombing, anti-ship strikes & mine laying, as well as torpedo strikes against the Royal Navy’s Russian Convoys. During 1944 it was used as a launch pad for V1 flying bombs, firing more than 1200 of these weapons. The aircraft remained in use throughout the war mainly because no suitable replacement could be found.

Heinkel HE 112.
A 1933 German Air Ministry requirement for a monoplane fighter drew responses from four manufacturers. The Heinkel 112 & the Messerschmitt 109 were the preferred aircraft, the 109 finally being the selected type. However the HE112 was ordered & pre-production aircraft were authorised. The HE 111 [sic] saw limited operational service and many were exported including 12 to the Japanese Navy. Hungary, Romania & Spain also took delivery.

Heinkel 111Z Series.
A product of the imagination of General Oberst Ernst Udet, the Siamese Twin, or Zwilling concept resulted in possibly the most improbable aircraft to attain service status during World War II, the monstrous HE 111Z transport & glider tug. During 1940, design development of the immense Ju 322 & Me 321 heavy cargo gliders had begun, but the Luftwaffe possessed no suitable aircraft for towing these giants. These aircraft were developed for the still proposed invasion of the British Isles. During a visit to Heinkel’s Udet suggested that two Heinkel 111’s should be linked together with a fifth engine added to provide the necessary power for towing, as a result work began early in 1941 on a prototype. Two HE111 fuselages complete with centre sections were linked together & a fifth engine installed. Two complete undercarriages were retained & the pilot was situated in the port fuselage with a second pilot in the right fuselage. The port pilot controlled the throttles, dual controls but no throttles were installed in the starboard fuselage, the second pilot controlline [sic] the starboard undercarriage, the radiator flaps of the centre & starboard engines. A mechanic, radio-operator & gunner were accommodated in the port fuselage, the second pilot acting as navigator. Type- Heavy Glider Tug powered by five Junkers Juno 211F-2 12 cylinder liquid cooled engines. The concept proved to be successful & long range bomber & reconnaisance [sic] variants were proposed

Heinkel HE 115.
The era of the torpedo carrying float-plane was already waning when the Second World War broke out. The importance of the aerial torpedo as a weapon increased rapidly whilst the carrying float-plane decreased in importance just as rapidly. It is therefore surprising that Germany should introduce the Heinkel 115 in to service in September 1939. More than 300 of these aircraft were built, powered by a pair of 900hp BMW radial engines. They were used widely in U-boat co-operation over a range of 1250 miles, carrying a war load of 2200lb’s of bombs, mines or torpedo’s. Armed with two 7.9mm machine guns. Crew of four.

Heinkel HE 116.
Designed in 1936 to provide a direct mail service to the Far East, the first prototype was completed in 1937. By early 1938 Heinkel had completed four pre-production models. Deliveries to the Luftwaffe commenced in 1938 & they operated as extreme range surveillance aircraft. They were unarmed as they flew outside land based fighter cover.

Heinkel HE 119.
Late in November 1937, the German Propagand [sic] Ministry announced that the HE 111U plane had reached a record speed of 314mph, faster than the 285mph Bristol Blenheim. The facts were different as it was the new HE 119, & the reason was the German wish to keep the HE 119 a secret aeroplane. Designed for operations as a land based aircraft or floatplane. Powered by a Daimler Benz DB606A-2 24 cylinder liquid cooled engine.

HEINKEL 118
Heinkel HE 118.
In response to a German Air Ministry requirement for a high performance tactical dive bomber capable of carrying a 1102lb bomb load, Heinkel designed the HE 118 as a sturdy all metal monoplane. The first of two prototypes flew in 1937 with a Rolls Royce Kestrel in line engine. The aircraft was evaluated against Arado, Blohm & Voss & Junkers types, but was rejected because of propellor problems in a dive. Two examples were sold to Japan fitted with Daimler Benz in line engines. Twelve were produced in total but no production order was placed. Retained as test aircraft.

Heinkel 170.
The Manfred Weiss Flugzeug und Motorfabrik at Budapest was manufacturing the Gnome-Rhone 14K Mistral Major 14 cylinder radial engine, & evinced interest in the possibility of installing these engines in the HE 70 airframe. This was agreed to and Heinkel designated the aircraft as the HE 170 V1. The Hungarian Government ordered a batch of 18 which were delivered in late 1937 & early 1938. The aircraft operated throughout the Balkan Campaign, but was unpopular with its crews because it burned readily when hit, its defensive armament was totally inadequate & its field of fire poor.
Heinkel HE 270.
During 1937, Heinkel proposed that existing HE 70F airframes should be completely overhauled, re-engined with DB 600 or DB 601, & fitted with up-dated operational equipment. With these changes it was suggested that the Luftwaffe could be provided rapidly & economically with a reconnaisance [sic] bomber with an enhanced performance. The aircraft was designated HE 270 as a three seat Light Reconnaisance [sic[ bomber but development was then abandoned.

Heinkel HE 177.
The search for a high altitude bomber to replace the Ju 88 & He 111 lasted four years & failed to turn up an effective answer. The He 177 Greif (Griffin) heavy bomber evolved too late & failed to live up to its promise. The original idea was very advanced, but the shortage of suitable power plant meant its designer, Siegfreid Gunter, was compelled to rely on the expedient of coupling two 1000hp Daimler Benz engines together, using two of the units to power the HE 177. They proved unreliable & were prone to overheating. The first prototype flew in November 1939 & became operational at the end of 1942. Production totalled 909 aircraft, but the programme was withdrawn by the end of 1944.

Heinkel HE 219 Uhu (Owl).
The HE 219 was a superb night-fighter, but its potential was largely wasted as a result of official misjudgements. The type was derived from the P.1060 fighter-bomber project that received scant encouragement until 1941, when its promise as a night fighter was realised. Production was ordered of what became the Luftwaffe’s first aircraft with retractable tricycle landing gear & the world’s first operational type with ejector seats. The prototype first flew in November 1942 with two 1750hp Daimler Benz DB 603A inline engines in nacelles suggesting radial engines. Some 300 were ordered & entered service in May 1943, but the programme was cancelled in 1944. The 291A-2 variant was a stripped down aircraft designed to catch the Mosquito.
Heinkel HE 274.
A four seat High Altitude Heavy Bomber powered by four Daimler Benz DB 603A-2 12 cylinder liquid cooled engines. Loaded weight 79388lbs. Max speed 267mph at sea level. Max. ceiling 46920 feet. Detail design & development was transferred to the Societe Anonyme des Usines Farman & two prototypes were ordered from the Suresnes plant plus four pre-production aircraft. Heinkel HE 277.
A six or seven seat Heavy Bomber, Reconnaisance [sic] & Anti-Shipping Aircraft.
Expressly forbidden by Goring to even mention the HE 277, Heinkel were given the go-ahead by Hitler personally. He wanted an aircraft that could bomb London from an altitude where it was safe from fighter attack, & for operations far out in the Atlantic. After a conference held in May 1944, Goring ordered the immediate production of 200 aircraft per month, but at this stage of the war the order was totally unrealistic, & in July 1944 the entire bomber programme was abandoned in favour of the Emergeny [sic] Fighter Programme. The aircraft was designed to operate at 49210 feet.

Heinkel HE 280.
When work on the HE 178 jet-powered research aircraft was ended in the autumn of 1939, Heinkel’s design effort was concentrated on a more advanced design powered by two new Heinkel turbo-jets, the Hes ‘ & the Hes 30. The first three prototypes were drastically underpowered, but the first flight was made in April 1941. The last six prototypes were completed with BMW 003 turbojets but the more advanced Messerschmitt 262 was preferred & the HE 280’s ended their lives as research aircraft.

Heinkel HE 162 Salamander.
The HE 162 was one of several warplanes produced by Germany in the closing stages of the Second World War in the hope of turning the tide of Allied success. The HE 162 prototype flew in December 1944 only 38 days after the issue of detail drawings to the factory. The type was intended as a fighter that could be mass produced by indifferent workers & operated by units of semi-trained personnel. The first operational wing of three Squadrons was formed in May 1945, just in time to be overrun by British Forces. Production totalled 116 aircraft & 800 incomplete were found in underground factories.

Heinkel He 178.
During the 1930’s Heinkel undertook a programme of research into propulsion by rocket & turbojets. Heinkel designed an experimental aircraft to evaluate the two types of propulsion. The rocket type was designated He 176 & the turbojet variety He 178. The He 178 was designed purely as a research type, & in August 1939 made the world’s first jet powered flight. Lack of official interest persuaded the company to abandon the project. Interest was then concentrated on the He 280 jet powered fighter. Only one prototype of the He 178 was ever built.
