Dear Mr Valentine
As a business friend of your father’s I write you telling you that my company in England, Messrs. ASEA Electric Ltd in London, has asked me to try to get in touch with you and find out if you have any special wishes and in such a case help you. Through the Swedish organisation “ Hjalp Krigets Offer” and their secretary Mr Henry Soderberg I got to know some days ago that he had met you on the 2nd of March in Stalag Luft 6. I am glad to hear that you are well off. I also got to know that you want a violin bow and I have arranged for sending you a bow which is said to be rather good and I hope that when this letter reaches you, same has arrived. If there are other things which you should like to have from hear and which it is permitted to send over, I should only be too glad to help you. I understand that you have got some literature from Mr Rolf Bjorkland in Stockholm but may be there are some other things which could help you to shorten the time. If so, please only send me some lines at your opportunity under my address as given below.
Hoping to hear from you and to see you when this terrible war is over, I send you my very best regards.
Yours sincerely
Mr H Wernnekinck

Dear Madam
Today is the ninth anniversary of my engagement & I have booked a table for two for dinner at the bull hotel Gerrards Cross tonight. Would you join me? If so could you get a taxi to call for you and pick me up at Gerrards Cross Station at 7.5 pm & collect us from the Bull at 8.30pm I am afraid we must cut it a little fine then but I don’t want to spoil the dinner by undue haste.
If this all meets with your approval would you kindly confirm by phoning me at my office.
Anne – Keli has been consulted & gives her blessing.
Yours ever obedient servant JRM

My darling Ursula
This is just to wish you many, many happy returns of your birthday. May we be together again for next and succeeding ones
I have scribbled these lines after our last walk together. Do you remember those kisses. You interrupted me for a [?] just after my writing “kisses” & I regret to say that I lied to you over the subject of this epistle.
All my love for ever dearest
Affectionately yours
Johnnie

My very dear mother Griffin.
I thank you so much for your birthday – wishes. You were the first in the morning. Even my mothers didn’t come before 12o’clock.
This picture isn’t exactly a photograph of me, but pen, [indecipherable word] of my coming resilience. Even the [indecipherable word] Dad is to be seen. The cello has already changed into money. Sad fact: it is a joy to live, all my love to you, yours Klaus. please give my kindest regards to your husband.

Dear Mrs Valentine,
We were talking about you and John – and of course Frances Mary! – today, and wondering how you are all getting along. So I am dropping a line to inquire!
Is John on active service now? And has he got a commission yet? Last time he wrote he was expecting to go in a bomber in the Spring, so I guess he has been helping to deliver the goods to the gentle Hun by this time. If so, we sincerely hope his luck has been of the best. My wife heard from a cousin of hers the other day, and she
2.
Says that one of her boys in the R.A.F. has been over in lots of those heavy raids on cologne and the Ruhr – and enjoys every minute of it! What a nerve! His brother was in a destroyer, evacuating our troops from Crete and was torpedoed, but picked up but is as perky as ever.
And how is Frances Mary getting on? Judging from the photos on the Christmas card, which we have just been admiring, she is going to be in the heavyweight class and we hope she still preserves her reputation for good temper and cheerfulness. Give her a kiss from us.
We are still in this roaring berg, and we were lucky enough to come thro’ the winter the much more lightl, apparently, than most places in England or Wales! Though usually the snowdrifts here are said to be
3.
terrific. We only had one fall of about four or five inches, and nothing like the severe conditions we heard about in letters from London, Birmingham, Nottingham and other places.
I think I told you that my wife was unlucky enough to fall and break her right arm early in the year, but she is now quite O.K. again.
We sometimes see Betty when in Aber; and once we passed Mrs Jones but took no notice of her. Betty is leaving her - or has already left.
What did you think of Winston’s speech the other day/ He seemed to be much happier than when he spoke on the previous occasions we thought. Certainly a more inspiring talk than Fatty Goering’s! The latter struck me as sounding an ominous (for Germany) note, especially in
4,
His references to Russia, and the pathetic picture of the dear Fuhrer striding, sleepless, up and down in his freezing dugout. Let us hope the Russians manage to hold during the coming months. If they do, Hitlers number is surely up, and we might see the end this year. Another jolly little winter in the Russia should provide even the enthusiastic Hun with all the glorious war joys that he wants! I was glad to hear of the attempt on Heydricks life in Prague. What a pity it failed!
Hoping you are keeping fit and managing to enjoy life as well as possible these days. (We may see the piping times of peace again before the year is out – with a bit of luck)
We remain,
Very sincerely yours. E.J. & Mary Evans.

Dear John,
I must apologise for being so long in replying to your letter (I see by the date on it that it’s almost a month). I have been in the process of finishing O.T.U and having seven days leave, then being posted to 207, as you know by the address; I came here last Tuesday week. Being already operational yourself, you seem to have been rather fortunate because the way things seem to move here it looks like being some weeks before I start ops; they’re on Lancasters here and as they’ve put me in a crew now there is a certain amount of training to do before we get down to getting in 200 hours. My vision of doing them all during this summer have been rudely shattered. The station is all dispersed, which is very inconvenient and way out in the wilds, but not so bad when you get used to it. Grantham (the place seems to dog my Air force career) is still the nearest town, l but one can get to Newark and Nottingham quite easily. I hope to get to into Lincoln some time, too so I can hope to see you there. By the way, a chap from Upper Heywood was posted here a few days ago – goes by the name Pankhurst and knows you.
I do hope you managed to get home for the great occasion of your daughters first birthday – is that too much to hope for? And thank you for calling me uncle Frank – it makes me feel quite old and responsible - like. Eileen and I saw Peggy my leave and we went together to a show in London: She is hearing from Brighteyes quite regularly now, and in the middle of March was still at the Middle East pool waiting to go to an O.T.U. and being very vehement about the fact that out there to be a P/O is far better than being a sergeant because
2.
The sergeants life was full of woe; bad messes and whatnot. He has not mentioned what happened to Yorkshire – Stringfellow and Shuttleworth, with whom he had been all along, had already gone to an O.T.U. in Kenya. You may be interested too [sic] know, that Shepheard went to 106 at Coningsby at the same time as I came here: I was very sorry we were separated as I had been with him all through training and we were rather close friends.
I hope I shall hear from you again soon, and perhaps be able to see you some time. Please give my best regards to Mrs Valentine, and to yourself – good luck
Yours sincerely
Frank

Friday (One week after the 11th April)
Dear John
It was lovely to have a real letter from you all to myself. Ursula has not written to me yet, so I was avid to here about the red hair and things. I’m glad Ursula has her “own beautiful colouring” back again so soon. It speaks pretty well for her physique & general state of health after such a tough two days.
There is our little matter I thought I’d mention to you if you don’t mind, rather than to her. I was reminded once more the night before last that my job, while not dangerous or heroic one like yours, is at times mildly risky, in fact I missed things so often & so closely that I didn’t really anticipate that I might have the opportunity to write to write to you today. I haven’t made a will because my possessions are so much ridiculously few that nobody is likely to dispute overmuch about it; but if it should come to dividing out the spoils, would you see that the guns have my Tibetan land horn, Peter my photographic apparatus & stuff, you my books, because they are chiefly about mountains, Frances my money (there must be quite thirty pounds in the P.O. & Savings Certifs, so tell her not to eat it all at once!!!) and Ursula everything else. Ask Ursula to send my tortoiseshell bracelet to Mum, because it’s the only bit of “jewellery” I ever wear much is really loved & I’d like Miss Henry & her sister to have my crocodile handbag. Thank you.
Fancy you having new letters in front of your name. Ursula never tells me anything of real importance. How does poor Jane fair without her mistress to take on ball chasing expeditions? You know, don’t you, that if ever she becomes too much of a nuisance temporarily, and nobody could take her for walks & so on you could always ship her up here top me because the Gunns would have her even if I couldn’t.
I know April 26th is, far, far too near at hand for both of you, but what a difference it must have made to you both, that you were able to be with her so long! I should laugh if you got posted to Hendon; what would do then? Does LAC mean Leading Air Craftman? I’ve a good mind to send this to Aber something, only I want it to reach you!
I forgot to tell Ursula, that ant any argument as to what [?] do or not do next as to finding a more active job in the battle has been settled for us by a Service Order issued two days ago that [?] women were allowed to leave the Service now, same as the men. So we were dead right as to our fuss. Why this took so much trouble for us to get transferred somewhere to our satisfaction – only we didn’t give them credit for so much guile as to be able to make this thing law without the public knowing it. Of course (if Wednesday nights incident is to be repeated there is no time to say – nothing on earth would persuade us to leave. It’s this business of sitting about utterly idle after being always busy, responsible practically for running the show, raids or no raids that got us down. Sez? [?] learn to knit, that’s all. All my love ,pop, yours Barbara

My Dear John
Tomorrow is our wedding anniversary and we shall have been married 31years. You & Ursula have started the right way & the best I can wish you is that you may live to spend 31 years as happy as ours has been, and as delightful & satisfactory a family as we have to show for our life together.
It was delightful to get your letter yesterday, it was written from Monkton saying thanks for your birthday parcel. I have forgotten what was in it, except the hankies. Was it a navy blue pullover? I am sorry it was too late for your birthday I posted it on Feb 5th so it should have been.
It was lovely for you and Ursula to have that delightful time together at Monkton & quite apart from the happiness of being with you the fresh air by the sea, the absence of raids, the good food etc. must have done her & Frances a lot of good.
I am very anxious to know where you are now & what you are doing. You speak of flying. I am glad you are not air sick. It is one thing to sail smoothly along as I did coming to India but quite another to twist & turn about, diving & so on. It must be rather exiting. Tell me exactly what you do when you write again, have you actually piloted a plane alone or is it your job releasing the bombs? You see I am utterly ignorant about it all. I can only say that I am burstingly proud to have a son in law in the R.A.F.. & may God bless you and keep you safe.
Isn’t it wonderful considering the distance & uncertainty involved of posts? I have had a wire today with “many happy” wishes from you all, an airmail post card from Ba & a book called “Green Glory” from Barbara all arriving on the 28th. Our mail does not get in till afternoons it was much nicer that they arrived today.
You will have heard from Ursula that we are to stay here till Feb 1943 instead of next Feb. I am rather undecided what I feel about the new arrangements. I long to get back to my family and new Granddaughter I long to see dear old London again, but the complement of keeping my husband 4 years after his age limit is reached is not to be overlooked. Also he is so happy working in his present job, & is in no hurry to sit down as a worn out old man. We are very happy in Delhi & we have such a lovely bungalow & garden, can run a car, & generally enjoy life, so I am pulled both ways. The one consolation is that by law no man may work in Delhi (in Government service) after the age of 60, unless a special bye-law is passed & as A.C.G. will be 60 in Feb 1943 they are not likely to pass a bye-law for him!
By that time war will be over without a doubt & we can then come & help re-build our shattered homeland. Germany is crumbling at the centre. Japan has made a mistake & looks like having to tighten her belt. Russian soldiers and equipment are holding on for the present & helping to delay the Germans in their plans against England. The mills of God are grinding slowly but they grind exceedingly small, & I believe the whole Nazi crowd is going into the mincer. I’d like to turn the handle!
Ursula sent me the snaps of Frances & although my husband laughs at me, I still say that Frances is like Ursula at that ager except for her ginger hair. Ursula’s was black. The Griffins are a ginger headed crowd so that explains Frances!
It is awfully hard to be so faraway from her especially as she is our first Grandchild. I thought I should feel ancient when I was a grandmother but I think I feel even younger than when I left home on that cold foggy snowy night 18 months ago. Wasn’t it a scream at Victoria & wasn’t the Drambuie nice? I’ve a bottle in No 5 Tughlak Rd ready for Christmas. We have that house for the remainder of our stay in India now. Good luck Johnnie dear & may you soon be back for good with your wife & daughter with the war over!
Much love Gertrude Griffin

THE REVEREND R.W.F. COWDRY.
16 LEE ROAD.
PERIVALE.
GREENFORD.
MIDDLESEX.
28th May, 1942.
My dear John,
Herewith three wee books which may be of use to you. The little red chap is a children’s book which explains things quite simply; the blue book is so slight that it will take you no time to find your way about it; the green book contains an excellent scheme of prayers, but is rather exhaustive; however, pages 13 - 21, 108 - 124, and 133 -140, my be useful. The “Office of Spiritual Communion” is alto-gether too long in your circumstances. The blue book, page 25, contains an act of spiritual commun-ion more suited to these busy days. I know that you are frantically busy, but if you do have time to peruse these books, and find in them things which present difficulties, do jot them down on a scrap of paper and let me have it; or if you want to talk about them, I would willingly spend a Monday in Lin-coln if you could get off for an hour or so. This may sound presumptious. [sic] It isn’t meant to be so. I know only too well my incompetence as an instructor, but I do also know that you have been unduly rushed into confirmation, however good your intention and that of the padre might have been. We cannot expect to understand fully all the mysteries of the Christian Religion, but an appreciation of the elements of the Faith we can grasp in a fairly short time once we accept Jesus Christ as our Friend and Saviour.
[page break]
Barbara has sent me my photographs, and a grand one of you. It was awfully good of her to go to so much trouble.
I’ve just been on the ‘phone to Ursula to get your number, and she tells me they are all going away for the week-end. I hope the weather will be kinder to her this weekend than it was to us last. 31 of us went for a hike on Whitmonday, and got soaked. Quite fun if you like that sort of thing!
Don’t trouble to acknowledge this and the books. If you have time in a few weeks to drop a line, please do.
Best of good wishes,
Ever yours,
[underlined] Roy [/underlined]

This is the memories of conversations between myself and my parents Michael & Pat Floyd and from letters and photographs that I now have in my possession since they have both died.
Philiip Floyd, my father’s only brother, was killed in 1942 when he was shot down as a pilot whilst on a bombing raid over Germany.
Near the end of the war my parents met, they were both also in the RAF, he was a pilot and she was in the WAAF. During the 1980’s and 90’s they were both active peace campaigners and specifically as organisers of ex – service CND. As part of these activities Michael Floyd gave press interviews, wrote many articles and he had often spoken of the death of his brother at the age of 21 as a pilot in the war. This information was subsequently published in Germany in Die Welt on the 10th August 1994 (as part of an article by Peter Michalski).
In response to reading this article a German man, Werner Gerlach, wrote to the newspaper and recounted (quote):
‘As a 15 year old boy on the night of 30/31 May I witnessed a heavy bomber attach over Koln. An English plane held for some time in searchlights was shot down behind my parents house in Mulheim on the Rhuhr.
On the next morning I photographed the crash site and still have the photographs.. I found also piece of tin with the word Manchester, also a piece of leather from a belt or boot on it in handwriting was P/O Floyd’
He requested that the newspaper inform my farther of these matters and there followed a long and warm correspondence (through a translator between Werner Gerlach and my father. He subsequently sent my father the photos of the crash site and my father sent him a photo of Phillip. The Gerlach’s also sent over photographs of Phillips grave which they visited on two occasions.
In a letter of 8th October 1994 Gerlach says that he took the photos of the crash site from the window of his parents house. He writes (quote)
‘it is very difficult for me to write the following: On the left of the picture you can see a soldier from the national security who my memory serves me right is lifting the blanket that my father laid over your brother.’
We (myself and my siblings) know that both my parents and Werner Gerlach and his wife (who had lost his only son) were very moved by this course of events. They all took a lot of comfort in spite of the tragedy from this new knowledge, their new relationship and an extraordinary story.

Dear Mr Floyd,
You will probably remember me by name for I had the honour to be your sons navigator on his last and fatal trip to Germany.
I saw your letter of appeal for text books in The Times and it provided me with your address. Ever since my return from Germany, I have wanted to write to you but I was prevented from doing so primarily because my wife lost your address when moving here in 1943. In addition I hesitated to obtain your address through R.A.F. channels for I did not wish to re-open a subject which must have been very painful to you. However seeing your letter & the reference to your gallant son I am taking the risk of writing in the hope that you would be interested in his last journey. Please forgive me if I probe a wound that is not yet healed and do not bother to reply.
As you know, we were among the force of 1000 machines which set off to bomb Cologne on the night of 30th May 1942. It was a beautiful clear evening with a full moon & perfect visibility. All went smoothly until we were approaching the target area. We could see the flak ahead & the flashes of the bombs. We were about 13,000ft up & suddenly caught in the intersection point of a score or more searchlight beams. Their predictors must have been following us without our knowledge for there was no warning or trial beams. We were suddenly illuminated & obviously the focus of attention of a single unit or battery of lights. We had experienced this before, and your son, without worrying the slightest gave us an exhibition of his prowess as a pilot such as he had done on previous occasions. He dived, climbed, twisted, turned, stalled, & almost looped but, try as he could, was unable to get us out of the cone. By this time of course, it was not only lights that were worrying us. Being so firmly caught by the
2)
Lights we had become the target of a considerable volume of artillery & shells had been exploding all around. We had been hit several times but fortunately no one was injured & the flying qualities of the machine were not impaired.
Finally your son decided that more drastic measures were required and ordered me in my capacity as bomb aimer to jettison our bomb load. This being done, he put the machine into a steep dive & we careered madly downwards. We had to descend to 3000 feet before we were clear of lights which were extremely persistent. However, he pulled out of his dive when we were no longer illuminated & we endeavoured to set a course for home. It was only a matter seconds before we were caught up in more lights & then saw to our horror that we were within range of relatively light A.A. fire which was being “hosepiped” at us from all directions. I remember most distinctly your son saying most calmly that he thought “we had had it” but of course he didn’t give in without a fight. He started climbing & trying to dodge streams of tracer ammunition flying in our direction but a few moments later the mid upper gunner reported that an engine was on fire. A bullet had pierced the container for the engine coolant material which had drained off with the result that this engine quickly overheated & burst into flames.
Conditions were now desperate but your son was completely unruffled. He coolly ordered the crew to bale out & applied himself to steadying the machine until we were all clear. We were of course loosing height at an alarming rate & to behave as he did required the steadiest of nerves.
There was a short queue to escape from the front hatch & while waiting my turn I tapped your son on the knee & held out my hand. We couldn’t speak for the noise of the running engine & the rushing wind drowned everything else. Your son quietly grasped my hand, smiled & then concentrated on his job of pilot & captain of the machine. He knew that it was his duty to remain at his post until all his crew were as safe as it was within his power to make them i.e. they had left the machine by parachute.
I am afraid that in his [?] for us he gave himself no chance. A few seconds after shaking his hand I was
3)
Dangling at the end of a chute & my first recollection was that of our machine hitting the ground & completely bursting into flames. Your son must have died instantly &it is no exaggeration to say that at the cost of his own life he saved those of five others.
You can imagine the grateful & aching memory that I have of a gallant English gentleman. The gratitude of our wives, mothers & other relations & friends needs no telling from me.
When I reached a British POW camp I reported your sons courageous behaviour to a British officer in the hope that news of it might be conveyed officially or otherwise to this country. He listened sympathetically but regretted his inability to help.
I landed in Mulheim or Oberhausen (they adjoin) in the Ruhr. I wonder if you have any news of your sons grave & would be grateful for any information you care to give me.
From my first issue of official POW notepaper I sent you a letter or (card) from the survivors of your son’s crew. Conveying our condolences & our respect for your brave son, in whose debt we shall always remain.
If I am not causing you too much pain by this recital, I shall be more than pleased to give you any further information in my power. Please do not hesitate to write.
Yours sincerely
J.R.M. Valentine (signed)

19 April 1945
British Army Hospital in Germany
My dearest Ursula: the camp was liberated by a unit of the British army on 16th April, unfortunately only one third of the fellows were still there. The Germans having evacuated the rest a few days earlier.
I managed to stay behind because I was in the sick bay recovering from diphthria, I got over the illness with the exception of the usual after effects, the worse of which is a temporary but more or less complete (paralisce) of my limbs.
I don’t know when I shall be brought back to Britain nor when I shall be able to see you. But I am anxiously longing to be with you and Francis. During all these years I have missed you terribly and the day of our reunion will be one of the great days of my life. I will let you know as soon as possible on my return to Britain.
With fondest love to you both John
