MEDEDEELING
aan de Bevolking
van bezet Nederland

SUPREME HEADQUARTERS ALLIED EXPEDITIONARY FORCES
[underlined]
ANNOUNCEMENT
TO THE POPULATION OF OCCUPIED HOLLAND
[/underlined]
l. The enemy who us [sic] responsible for your food supplies, has ignored the need for sufficient supplies during the period when the connections with Germany still were open. Now that he is isolated through our military advance and has taken the criminal decision to go on fighting until the last moment, he will not be able to prevent starvation of your people.
2. Since your food supplies are exhausted now, the Supreme Allied Commander has given orders that immediately food has to be dropped by aircraft over occupied Holland.
3. We are warning the enemy that this is going to happen and that he is not allowed to hinder or prevent our efforts to help you. Even in case he nevertheless will try to do so, we will continu [sic] to do everything possible to save your lifes [sic].
4. The food supplies will be dropped by aircraft of various types, principally by heavy bombers. The aircraft will fly low and drop, their loads on locations where collecting by you is easy. We will not be able to announce timely when and where the food will be dropped and therefore you must observe the following instructions:
a. Expect food drops by day and by night. Therefore be continuously alert for our aircraft from now on.
b. Create groups under the command of responsible persons to look out for our aircraft and to collect the food parcels. We instruct the enemy to help you as much as possible. Accept this help, it may ease your burden.
c. As soon as you hear our aircraft approaching, you have to take cover if you are in places where food will be dropped. The parcels will not be dropped by parachutes and are heavy, so if they hit you they may injure or even kill you.
d. Place guards as soon as our aircraft are approaching in order to observe where the parcels have been dropped.
e. Distribute the food as honest as possible.
f. When the enemy tries to steal away your food or if he tries to fire at our aircraft, then take notes of all possible details and in particular the names of those who do so. Reports these details. The members of the enemy forces who are guilty will be considered to be war criminals and will be treated as such.
5. Take care, we cannot promise that every area will receive the right portion of supplies. In some areas there will be too much, in others too few. Therefore arrange a honest distribution of the food.
6. Don't forget, we are your friends and will continue to do everything possible to help you.

May 8th 1945
The war had ended that day; everyone was in a happy mood. We were on the battle order. It was Rotterdam again. We went out to the aircraft. The CO drove around, wishing everyone good luck. The station photographer suddenly came and took pictures of the air and ground crews together in front of the aircraft. We never had that before. Later we all got free prints. Then it was time to go. We taxied out, little realising that within a few minutes we would witness a crash. We took off and as we climbed up, I noticed that the Lancaster behind us was starting his take off run. As he increased speed, a swing showed. The swing became violent. From my mid upper turret I had a grandstand view as he swung off the runway to port. He tore up the FIDO – piping which was mounted on short steel legs above the ground. Lengths of steel piping flew in all directions. The Lancaster ripped up the grass and earth as the undercarriage collapsed. The plane slowed round in a cloud of dust and debris. Its back broke near the mid upper turret. An ambulance and fire tender raced out to it. Luckily there was no fire. That was the end of Lancaster NN806.
Unfortunately that was one load of food which did not get to Holland that day. the next aircraft began its take off, passing the sad pile of wreckage that moments before had been an operational bomber. Later we heard that the pilot, having the V E day mood on him, had allowed his flight engineer to attempt the take off and that he had lost control of the aircraft. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured.

[underlined] Poem by Yge Foppema [/underlined]
Pilots who came to us while waging the bloodiest war that ever yet befel [sic] mankind, and that for five years had been raging around and o’er us, making life hell.
Look how we wave at you now that all is well.
Look how we raise our children on our shoulders, and they will tell their children’s children when they’re old and wise,
How man, like God, dropped Manna from the skies.
From the book, ‘The Hunger Winter’ by Henri Van Der Zee.
