[underlined] EXTRACT FROM LONDON GAZETTE DATED 17 JULY 1945 [/underlined]
THE KING has been graciously pleased to approve the following award in recognition of gallantry and devotion to duty in the execution of air operations:
[underlined] Distinguished Flying Cross [/underlined]
[underlined] Flying Officer Noel APPLETON (Aus 414980) RAAF No 166 Squadron [/underlined]
This Australian Officer has now completed a tour of 37 sorties as Captain of Aircraft. Throughout his tour he has given a consistent display of superb airmanship and has never failed to seek out his target, attack it, and return to base.
Many of the sorties in which he has taken part have been in adverse weather conditions and in the face of heavy enemy opposition, but these difficulties have not prevented him from pressing home his attacks with damaging effect.
By his steady bearing when under fire and gallant conduct under all circumstances he has won the confidence and admiration of his crew and has set a magnificent example to the whole squadron.
