29th. September 1943.
Dear Mrs Milling
Before you receive this letter you will have been informed by telegram that your husband, Sergeant Edward Milling, is missing from air operations.
He was the Navigator of an aircraft which failed to return from an attack on Hanover on the night of the 27th. September, 1943.
There is, of course, a fair chance that the whole of the crew may eventually be reported as prisoner of war, and I trust you may derive some comfort from this hope.
Your husband was a member of a most experienced crew and his loss is deeply regretted. I can only offer you my sincere personal sympathy and express the hope that he may have been able to escape from the aircraft.
Any further information that may be received will be forwarded to you immediately.
Yours sincerely
Reginald Twamley

19th November, 1946.
Dear Mrs. E. Milling,
It is with reluctance that I must once again refer to the loss of your husband, Sergeant Edward Milling, Royal Air Force, but you will wish to know that a report has now been received as the result of investigations carried out by the Royal Air Force Missing Research and Enquiry Service in Germany.
This report states that your husband and his five comrades are interred in graves numbered 1-6 in the north east corner of the cemetery at Heyersum, approximately 6 Miles west of Hildesheim. Owing to the circumstances under which they lost their lives, however, individual identification was only possible for Sergeant Jackson, Acting Flight Lieutenant McGhie and Sergeant Ackroyd, who are interred in graves numbered 1, 2, and 3 respectively. Graves numbered 4-6 have been marked with crosses inscribed collectively with the full service particulars of your husband and the two remaining members of the crew.
All the members of the other crew involved are interred in a communal grave in the cemetery at Mahlerten.
It is hoped that the knowledge of your husband’s place of burial received after so great a lapse of time, will afford you some slight measure of consolation in your great loss.
Yours sincerely,

Madam,
With reference to the letter from this department dated 8th October, 1943, I am directed to inform you, with deep regret, that all efforts to trace your husband, 656624 Sergeant E. Milling, have proved unavailing.
In view of the lapse of time, it is felt that there can now be little hope of his being alive, but action to presume that he has lost his life will not be taken until at least six months from the date on which he was reported missing.
Such action will then be for official purposes only, and you will be duly informed.
Meanwhile I am to assure you, with the sincere sympathy of the department, that all possible enquiries will continue to be made.
I am,
Madam,
Your obedient Servant,

Oct. 19. 1943.
Dear Mrs Milling,
You have often been in our thoughts since we received the terrible news that our dear boys were missing. I do hope that you and your baby are as well as on can expect under the circumstances and that your baby will be a great comfort to you.
Your husband (Ted) was such a grand happy fellow and was so proud of you and his baby. All the members of the crew have visited us here at our home in Lofthouse along with our son Kenneth who was Air bomber. They were the grandest set of fellows I have had the pleasure of meeting and they each had such great confidence in the capabilities of the others. I do hope that we shall soon have some good news of them all, as both my Carl and I are convinced they are safe somewhere.
Should you receive any news Mrs Milling, will you kindly let me know? And I will communicate with you immediately I should get any.
My Carl joins me in sending our very best wishes
Very sincerely yours
Mary & Carl

MILLING (Flt./Sergt.). – In loving memory of my dear Husband Ted, missing, believed killed, September 27/28, 1943, in a raid over Germany.
Since you wished me good-bye,
With a kiss and a sigh.
And a smile I shall never forget;
Though the days seem like years,
I can smile, through my tears,
For I know, dear, that we’ll meet again.
From loving Wife and Baby Brenda
MILLING (Flt./Sergt.). – In loving memory of our dear son Eddie, presumed killed in raid over Germany, September 27/28, 1943.

Dear Mrs Miller
I doubt if my name will convey much to you. I was one of the “boy’s” who went with Teddy. I’m afraid that you must expect the worst although there is a faint hope. Sorry if I’ve put it crudely

Your ref. P. 409198/3/P.4. (B.4.)
AIR MINISTRY
(Casualty Branch)
73-77, OXFORD STREET, W.1.
18th March 1944
Madam,
I am directed to refer to the letter from this Department dated the 14th March 1944, and to inform you with regret that, although no definite news of your husband, Sergeant E. Milling, Royal Air Force, has come to hand, reports have now been received from the International Red Cross Committee regarding some of the occupants of two aircraft which were reported missing as a result of an attack on Hanover on the night of 27th/28th September 1943, and in one of which your husband was flying.
Unfortunately, the reports have mixed the crews, and state that six members of the crews of these aircraft, namely, Flying Officer Latham, Acting Flight Lieutenant McGhie, Sergeant Ackroyd and three “unknown” airmen lost their lives on the 27th September 1943, and with the exception of Sergeant Ackroyd, were buried on the 29th September 1943 in the Catholic Cemetery at Mahlerten by Hildesheim in the first row, to the left against the wall. The burial place of Sergeant Ackroyd is not stated, nor are any grave numbers quoted. Hildesheim is about eighteen miles south of Hanover.
As there were fifteen airmen in the two crews, two of whom are prisoners of war, it will be appreciated that it is not possible on the above information to identify those described as “unknown”, but as your husband is still unaccounted for, it is considered that you would wish to be notified of these reports.
I/………
Mrs. E. Milling,

Clifton Side,
Beeston,

I am to add an expression of the Department’s sincere sympathy with you in your anxiety, and to assure you that should any further information be received, it will be transmitted to you immediately.
I am,
Madam,
Your obedient Servant,
E. Cowan
for Director of Personal Services.

Saturday
20.2.43.
To my Darling Wife,
Darling. If by any chance you do receive this letter you will know that I shall not be coming back.
Please darling, if it does happen, try not to let it upset you. I know it will be hard for you, for I know you love me, but be brave & remember dear, it is for something which will last long after we have
[page break]
all left this earth, so please be brave dear.
Remember darling, you have our little girl [deleted] K [/deleted] now to think of; and she is worth all the love which you have for me, so look after her & love her for me dear.
Life is a funny thing dear. All the years we have been married, (Incidentally the happiest years of my life), we have just had the two of us to love each other, now, when we have someone to share our love, & really complete
[page break]
happiness, I have to leave you, but I guess that is how it was meant to be. I am not grumbling. My life has been happy enough. The last six years have been everything a man could desire. A perfect wife and pal. One whom I could give all my love & devotion to, & know that it would not be wasted. One whom I knew would return my love with just as much fervour & devotion as I could give mine. I have loved
[page break]
you darling more than anything in this world. My one regret at leaving is that I am leaving behind the dearest wife who ever lived, & the mother of my darling little girl.
Well sweetheart I’m afraid I can’t say much more. I haven’t said much but what I have, comes from the bottom of my heart, & if I had my time over again I would do exactly what I already done. Marry the sweetest little girl in the
[page break]
world. I must ask you again dear to love & take care of our little girl. Bring her up to be everything that you are, & you will have a daughter to be proud of.
I must close now dear as it is time I was off. If I can I will write to Mum & Dad & John. Just in case I can’t manage it, give them all my love. Tell them I am sorry for any sorrow or worries I may have brought them, & this is from my heart. I think
[page break]
they are the finest parents a man could have, & I only hope that I go worthy of the love & devotion they have given me.
Tell John to take care of himself & I think he is the finest brother & [underlined] pal [/underlined] anyone could have. He is a grand lad & I wish him all the [deleted] indecipherable word [/deleted] luck in the world.
Good bye darling & until we meet again all my love forever.
From your ever
[page break]
Loving husband
Ted XXXXXXXXXXX
Give my love to Anne & Joe
I LOVE YOU DARLING
