R.A.F. SHATTER ’SE[missing letters]
BIG RAID ON BALTIC COAST: 41 MISSING
‘Forts’ Wreck Two Other Vital Plants: Berlin Bombed, Too
IN the last 24 hours three huge factories vital to German armaments productions have been shattered by the Allied air forces.
R.A.F. bombers during the night flew to the Baltic coast town of Peenemunde, 60 miles north-west of Stettin, to make a heavy attack in bright moonlight on the “secret” research and development establishment there, the largest of its kind in Germany. Forty-one bombers are missing from the night’s operations.
This attack followed blows by U.S. Flying Fortresses raiding in daylight on –
Regensburg, on the Danube, site of Germany’s second largest aircraft factory, where the latest type of Messerschmitt fighters are made; and
Schweinfurt, 65 miles east of Frankfurt, where there are important ball-bearing works.
After raiding Regensburg the Fortresses flew on another 1,000 miles over the Alps to land at bases in North Africa.
The R.A.F.’s night attack was the first on Peenemunde. The Air Ministry communiqué announcing the raid went on:
[Italics] First reports indicate that the attack was well concentrated. A great number of enemy aircraft were encountered along the route. Several of these were destroyed.
Mosquitoes bombed objectives in Berlin.
Fighter Command intruders carried out many attacks on airfields and railway targets in France, the Low Countries, and North-West Germany. Four enemy aircraft were destroyed. Forty-one bombers and one fighter are missing. [/italics]
The attack on Peenemunde was made in conditions approximating to daylight. Like the U.S. attacks on Schweinfurt and Regensburg, it was a precision attack on a special objective of outstanding importance in the air war. The Peenemunde establishment deals with high-grade development work on aircraft, radiolocation and armaments.
Biggest Day of the War
These latest Allied raids, together with simultaneous attacks carried out yesterday on German airfields in Northern France and on air bases near Marseilles by bombers from North Africa, make up thhe [sic] most intensive day in the air since the war began.
To-day’s German communiqué reporting on the raids, said:
“The enemy dropped a large number of H.E. and incendiary bombs on places on the North German coast during the night. There were civilian casualties. Night fighters and A.A. guns shot down at least 37 aircraft.
“Enemy air formations which flew over Southern Germany in daylight yesterday lost 51 four engined bombers and five fighters. In two South German towns civilians suffered casualties.”
10 MILES OF SMOKE
Great Factory in Flames
The attacks by Fortresses on Regensburg and Schweinfurt celebrated the first anniversary of their initial blow at Europe.
Returning crews were jubilant over the results of the attack on Schweinfurt, reporting smoke billowing up to 10,000 feet over the target. A reconnaissance pilot later reported that smoke had risen 20,000 feet and was drifting for 10 miles.
Preliminary reports on Regensburg stated. “Regensburg appears really well pranged. Plenty craters. Smoke issuing from factory buildings.”
The Vital Targets
Brig.-Gen. Frederick L. Anderson, the Commanding General Eighth U.S. Air Force Bomber Command, said this after the raids:
”The recent attacks into Germany surely have caused the enemy to doubt the safety of any part of Axis Europe. Penetrations much deeper than any which some of our critics thought possible were but the beginning of the Daylight Battle of Germany. Germany is now wide open – no part secure.
“Between Our Jaws”
“We have celebrated this anniversary by sending out two large forces of Fortresses deep into Germany. One of these forces is continuing on south, almost a thousand more miles beyond its target, to Africa.
“We have taken up the ‘shuttle service’ across Europe, a service which was started by the R.A.F., but which both Air Forces will now carry out while demonstrating beyond all doubt that the end of German power is but a matter of time.
Allied Air Forces in Africa have now contacted those from England, and German [sic] is between their jaws.
“Although we cannot say that the end actually is in sight, the eventual end, the ultimate collapse of German resistance, due to the ever-spreading bomb cancer, certainly is obvious and inevitable.
“The real results of strategic, precision bombing can never be spectacularly or immediately apparent. But the final effects of the prolonged bombing of this kind are as inevitable as the chain of events necessary to build an enemy aeroplane. We are breaking that chain in several places and many other chains along with it.”
INVASION PRELUDE
Stockholm. Wednesday. – The Germans regard the Fortress bombardments of French airfields as the prelude to the invasion of France, say Berlin messages. – A.P.
FIRST “PRECISION BLOW” AT NIGHT
WE RAN THE GAUNTLET TO PEENEMUNDE
By Our Air Correspondent
THE important tactical feature of the attack on Peenemunde was that it was the first precision attack at night. Unlike the customary practice of saturating a target area embracing many industrial buildings, our bombers went out to bomb one particular building.
Ordinarily, identification of such a selected target at night is very difficult; to pin-point such a target at night it is necessary to wait for such conditions as bright moonlight, which gives an almost daylight effect, and clear weather.
Of course, such conditions have a disadvantage in that they expose our bombers to greater dangers from enemy night fighters. This would account for the losses last night. Peenemunde involves a round trip of nearly 1,300 miles, and our bombers would have had to run the gauntletf [sic] rom [sic] swarms of night fighters operating from the north-west coast of Germany, Denmark, and the whole Baltic area.
Selection of the works at Peenemunde fits into the present policy of reducing the offensive and defensive power of the Luftwaffe by striking at production and operational bases. Radiolocation production has been badly hit by two attacks – one on Friedrichshafen on June 20 and the other on Peenemunde last night.
[map]
[italics] Included in the air attacks of the past 36 hours have been raids on airfields and railways in the Calais-Lille-Poix area and other objectives in the Low Countries and North-West Germany. [/italics]

R.A.F. Hit New Vital Target
BOMBER COMMAND LAST NIGHT MADE A HEAVEY ATTACK ON A NEW AND VITAL TARGET – GERMANY’S LARGEST AND MOST IMPORTANT RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT ESTABLISHMENT.
This is at Pennemunde, on the Baltic coast, 60 miles north-west of Stettin. It had not been raided before.
The attack was made in bright moonlight – so bright that conditions approximated to daylight.
“First reports indicated that the attack was well concentrated, say an Air Ministry communique.
“A great number of enemy aircraft were encounters “Several of these were destroyed
“Mosquitoes bombed objective on Berlin.
“Fighter command intruders carried out many attacks on air fields and railways targets in France, the Low Countries and North-West Germany.
“Four enemy aircraft were destroyed. 41 bombers and one fighter are missing.”
This is the heaviest loss Bomber Command have borne since the night of June 21, when 44 were lost on a heave attack on Krefeld.
The attack should be considered in conjunction with the United States raids yesterday on Schweinfurt and Regensburg. All were precision blows at special objectives of outstanding importance.
The Peenemunde establishment deals with high grade development work on aircraft, radiolocation and armament.
There were also raid alerts in Northern Italy last night, for the fourth successive night, but there has been no report of any attack by home-based bombers.

Life Lost on Air Operations
[photograph]
Mrs. Norton, of Ebenezer, Vale-road, Exmouth, has this week received news through the Red Cross that her younger son, Flying Officer Francis Dunsford Norton, D.F.C., age 22, reported missing on August 18th last, had lost his life while on air operations and was laid to rest at Griegswald Weick, Northern Germany.
This gallant officer, who was educated at Bridgend Secondary School and finally at the Exmouth Grammar School, prior to joining the R.A.F.V.R. in 1939, was qualifying for the profession of chartered accountant.
His only brother, Searle, joined the R.A.S.C. and went overseas, taking part in the evacuation of Dunkirk.

[underlined] CHRISTMAS IN THE ARMY 1941 [/underlined]
I spent Christmas in camp with the Troops and we made the most of being “cooped up” and away from home by having a very enjoyable Xmas – at least I through enjoyed myself and I think the Troops did likewise.
Christmas dinner was served out at mid-day by the Officers and Sergeants (the latter having been on cookhouse fatigue all the morning – much to the Gunners’ amusement). The dinner was very good But I almost feel that some of the Troops appreciated more than anything the [underline] free [/underlined] issue of a pint of beer and a packet of cigarettes! A Lance Bombardier dressed up as the Orderly Officer (actually I was Orderly Officer at the time but too busy serving out, so I lent him my hat etc!) and came round with a Gunner, as Orderly Sergeant, asking for any complaints which amused the Troops quite a lot and produced a good amount of cat calls. The climax came when someone upset a pint bottle of beer over y peaked hat, but it didn’t really do any harm and added to the merriment of the party.
On this occasion I wish to take the opportunity of wishing all at G.H. & Co., a happy Xmas and a Peaceful happier year to come. It is nearly twelve months since I was arguing costs on “Custard Powder! – I should quite enjoy doing my alterations again!
I shall be up here possibly until the New Year then I believe they are going to look me out a “camel” and some warmer weather.
I was very pleased to have the opportunity of reading such an interesting account of life in the Middle East as seen through the eyes of G.H. & Co.
I hope that I shall soon depart to one of the spheres of active operations and I think that my sentiments are shared by almost all those who have been stationed in the British Isles since the war began. Everyone is satiated with training, but as long as the threat of invasion remains, so do we. May G.H & Co., have a prosperous 1942.
We are pleased to get cheery letters from you all with New Year Greetings. The above replies will interest you. Best of luck to you all for 1942.
GEORGE HARKER & CO LTD.

[underlined] EXTRACTS FROM LETTERS OF G.H.STAFF IN THE FORCES. [/underlined]
After nearly two years of many different billets I have at last reached the pinnacle of comfort, i.e. “Kingsway House” – which in pre-war days was a Workhouse – however, in this Army one becomes remarkably philosophic! I have recently been on a course dealing with ciphers and believe I could save G.H. hundreds of pounds on Australian Rice cables! It was the first clerical work I have done in the Army and it felt quite pleasant to be back at a desk once again.
The letters from members of the staff are very interesting indeed, I only wish that I had anything as interesting happening to me. Our excitement in the last month has consisted of getting completely snowed up. The blizzards have been terrific, and it has been necessary to dig one’s way out of the door. It is reported that one chap was walking along and stepped into a hole, all that was visible of him was his cap. I cannot, however, vouch for the authenticity of this.
I am still marking time, waiting for the chance to enter a Bombing and Gunnery School, and having now refreshed my wireless course three times, am now beginning to know something about it. It is expected that in about six weeks time our unit will be moved, and we are all hoping very hard.
I trust that all is well with G.H. & Co, and I should like to be remembered to the staff.
George Harker & Co.,

Dear Mr Madgett,
I was very sorry indeed to hear from one of our Directors that your son Hedley, did not return from a recent raid over Germany.
No doubt he has mentioned working with me when at Harkers & I feel, on that account, I should write to you.
Among the many lads that have passed through my department he was outstanding in [underlined] every [/underlined] respect, and for that reason I feel sure he must be safe.
Meanwhile, I trust your anxiety will soon be relieved with good news of him.
I remain
Yours sincerely

[missing letter]DVICE TO THE RELATIVE OF A MAN WHO IS MISSING
In view of the official notification that your relative is missing, you will naturally wish to hear what is being done to trace him.
The Service Departments make every endeavour to discover the fate of missing men, and draw upon all likely sources of information about them.
A man who is missing after an engagement may possibly be a prisoner of war. Continuous efforts are made to speed up the machinery whereby the names and camp addresses of prisoners of war can reach this country. The official means is by lists of names prepared by the enemy Government. These lists take some time to compile, especially if there is a long journey from the place of capture to a prisoners of war camp. Consequently “capture cards” filled in by the prisoners themselves soon after capture and [missing letters]nt home to their relatives are often the first news [missing letters]eived in this country that a man is a prisoner of war. That is why you are asked in the accompanying letter to forward at once any card or letter you may receive, if it is the first news you have had.
Even if no news is received that a missing man is a prisoner of war, endeavours to trace him do not cease. Enquiries are pursued not only among those
[page break]
who were serving with him, but also through diplomatic channels and the International Red Cross Committee at Geneva.
The moment reliable news is obtained from any of these sources it is sent to the Service Department concerned. They will pass the news on to you at once, if they are satisfied that it is reliable. It would be cruel to raise false hopes, such as may well [missing word] raised if you listen to one other possible channel of news, namely, the enemy's broadcasts. These are listened to by official listeners, working continuously day and night. The few names of prisoners given by enemy announcers are carefully checked. They are often misleading, and this is not surprising, for the object of the inclusion of prisoners' names in these broadcasts is not to help the relatives of prisoners, but to induce British listeners to hear some tale which otherwise they could not be made to hear. The only advantage of listening to these broadcasts is an advantage to the enemy.
The official listeners can never miss any name included in an enemy broadcast. They pass every name on to the Service Department concerned. There every name is checked, and in every case where a name can be verified, the news is sent direct to the relatives.
There is, therefore, a complete official service designed to secure for you and to tell you all discoverable news about your relative. This offic[missing letters] service is also a very human service, which w[missing letters] understands the anxiety of relatives and will spare no effort to relieve it.

Dear [inserted] Sir, [/inserted]
The personal effects of your [inserted] son [/inserted] as listed on the [missing letter]ttached inventory have now reached this office from the Unit and will be held in safe custody pending the receipt of further evidence which will enable a conclusive classification of the casualty to be made.
In the case of casualties reported as “missing” unless definite evidence comes to light in the
meantime, authority to release the effects is not normally received from the Air Ministry until at
least six months from the date of the casualty, since official action to presume death is rarely taken
before the expiration of this period.
In the case of casualties ultimately reported “Prisoner of War”, the Air Ministry will as a general rule,
only authorise the release of effects on the written request of the officer or airman concerned. In
these circumstances, in order to expedite release, any original letter received from a Prisoner of War
in this connection should be forwarded to this office for perusal and early return.
In the meantime, may I be permitted to express my sympathy with you in this period of anxiety.
Yours faithfully,

Dear Sir & Madam
In accordance with Air Ministry instructions, the personal effects of the above named as enumerated on the enclosed inventory, have been despatched to you by passenger train.
When the effects reach you, kindly sign and return the inventory, for which purpose a prepaid addressed label is enclosed herewith.
In this connection I would bring to your notice that in the event of your wishing to dispose of the uniform included among the personal effects, you should do so only to a person well-known to you as entitled to wear the uniform, or by sale to a reputable firm of tailors. On the other hand, you might like to know that Mrs. Mary Mathews of Officers' Kit Replacements, 72 South Audley Street, London, W.1., which is a charitable organisation instituted for the purpose of replacing the uniform of officers in cases of hardship, will probably be glad to have it.

Dear Mum & Dad,
Well, of all the dumps, this is one. The only thing decent here is the food. We cannot go out of camp, the N.A.A.F.I. is not too good, & chocolate (& cigarettes) are [deleted] severly [/deleted] severely rationed, and the rain has been pelting down most of the days, and there is absolutely nothing to do all day long.
Yesterday (Monday) for example we just got up for breakfast, I wrote two letters and went to sleep – woke up for

dinner, went to sleep again till tea time, then read till supper. Then to keep awake we went for [inserted] a [/inserted] walk around the camp, and before we went to bed we had a pillow fight to let off some energy. There is not even facilities for sports.
I am sending the case back because we have been issued with another kit bag & more kit including a pair of shoes – and jolly good ones they are too.
This morning we are going to get a shipping index card, whatever that means, so it looks as though it won’t be

long now.
I hope you had a good Bank Holiday, & better weather than we are having. They say Manchester is supposed to be the wettest place in England & it’s certainly living up to its name.
Well, I think that is about all for now –
Love from [underlined] Hedley [/underlined]
P.S. I could not get a pass to Liverpool on the weekend so I did not see Edith.
