Dear Madam,
Further to my letter to you of 10th July, 1945, the Graves Registration Services in Belgium report that a German Burial Party deposited an “authority for burial” with the cemetery office at the time of the burial of your son, Serjeant [sic] W.F. Burkitt, Royal Air Force. This document has been inspected and it states that “Burkitt, an English Flyer, died at Lembeck, Brussels, on the 22nd March 1944, and was to be buried at Evere on the 24th”. At the bottom of the sheet appears:-
ERK-MK (Erkennung Marke, which means: Regimental details)
1320846
CE
RAF
Burkitt
W.
This would indicate that the identity of the body had been taken from a standard R.A.F. disc.
The Graves Services in Belgium confirm that Sjt [sic] Burkitt's grave is Plot 10, Row 17, Grave No: 14 in Brussels (Evere) Cemetery.
Yours faithfully,
WC Turner Staff Capt
Director,
Graves Registration and Enquiries.
