Dear Marie,
On return from leave last night, I collected a little mail including one from you. Most of the chaps seem to be getting complaints from home about mail. Evidently some went astray somewhere. Very glad to hear you got the rain at last. It must have been a wonderful relief to everyone.
Well I spent 4 days of last week in Eire and had a great time. Didn't get far beyond Dublin this time. It is a really beautiful city compared to the English distorted sense of beauty. Admittedly English beauty does look very well on post cards but is dirty & old & depressing. Dublin is nice & clean & has the wide streets so familiar to any Australian.
Of course, I concentrated chiefly on wrapping myself round steaks, eggs, chocolates, milk & all the other things which
[page break]
had become a myth to anyone in England. I was lucky to get a spell of beautiful weather and got around all the nearby seaside resorts etc. Some of the scenery was beautiful & you'll get a fair idea of it through the post cards I send home. I also took some snaps but haven't had them developed as yet. I also bought a beautiful new camera over there. Haven't tried it yet as I've no film. The film situation is rather grim over this way. Hence if you [illegible words] onto any 116 films you can send them on, please.
I’ll be over [illegible word] for a long while yet & that is all of my own choosing, so don’t be too worried about it. As for the future I’m not letting it worry me unduly. I imagine we’ll be moving down southwards very shortly. We start a more advanced course in navigation theory, spherical trig etc & transport work next week & thence onto the real thing.
[page break]
Glad to note Dan is still O.K.
I spent each week end of my leave in Bradford with Jack & Mrs Collett, friends of Greg. I borrowed a few clothes from jack to go to Dublin. They are really good scouts & have treated me very well each time I’ve been there.
Met a pal of mine, Marty Ryan one day in O’Connell Street. I’d not seen him for about 15 mths & he was just finishing his honeymoon. His bride was a Dublin girl & very nice too. The girls all looked pretty decent [illegible words] it was a change to see [illegible words] dressed after the uniform [illegible words] clothes, with which [illegible words] have had to be [illegible words].
There are no buses on Sunday so I only had from Monday till Saturday & with the strict customs checks etc [inserted] at each end [/inserted] it took a whole day to cross each way which left me only 4 days.
I’ll be interested to know how the business about Uncle Jack Jeffrey goes. No doubt Smith’s & [indecipherable word] will go to town on it. We are not doing too well this test. Got the Drongoes out on Saturday for 254 & at lunch today we are 5 [indecipherable words]. Kev will be interested to know that Keith Miller is the best & fastest bowler in England at present. Regards to all Love Pat.

William (Bill) Ernest Lucas was born in Tooting Bec, London on the 16th January 1917, 3 years deep into World War One. Luckily for Bill he was not of age to endure with the fighting in the trenches. However, when Europe was engulfed into another worldwide conflict in 1939, this set way for Bill to become involved with the RAF and IBCC.
Growing up, Bill was an only child and left his school (Bec Grammar School) at the age of 15. He managed to get a job with a printers, which led to his second and only other job at an insurance company called the London and Lancashire. The company’s sports club enabled Bill to find his passion for athletics (especially running) and he was expected to participate in the 1940 Olympics until the war interfered. (https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/30884)
A photo of Bill in his running gear is shown in https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/30865 where he is running down 55 Graham Road in Surrey.
Bill instead competed in the 1948 Olympic Games as the games were also cancelled in 1944 due to World War Two. Luckily the games were hosted in London (https://olympics.com/en/olympic-games/london-1948) and Bill had retired from IBCC meaning that he had time to participate.
As seen in ‘Bill Lucas and the 1948 London Olympics’ (1948) https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/30866 Bill managed to come 6th in the Second Heat meaning he was one position off of being in the final on the 2nd August 1948! This collection also includes Bill in his older prime wearing his 1948 Olympic Games jacket and the official Olympic Games programme from 1948.
When Hitler invaded Poland on September 1st 1939, Bill was 22 years old meaning that he was eligible to be part of Great Britain’s Army. Combining Bill’s hatred of the sea and his fathers recent experiences in the trenches, the RAF seemed to be the most compatible choice with Bill. (https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/520/30884/B[Author]LucasWEv10001.jpg)
Bill was not involved in Britain’s mightiest air conflict against Hitler’s Luftwaffe however, instead watching ‘The Few’ defeat the Nazi aircrafts and succeed. Being considered to be Nazi Germany’s first ‘major military defeat’, this allowed for Britain to continue fighting in the war (https://www.raf.mod.uk/our-organisation/our-history/anniversaries/battle-of-britain/ and to an extent, allowed Bill to continue his path of becoming an Squadron Leader.
It was November 1940 when Bill started his pilot training, but due to a bomber offensive being the only way to properly counter the Nazis, this was huge not just for Bill but Britain as a whole. There had never been a bomber offensive before in warfare. https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/520/30884/B[Author]LucasWEv10001.jpg
As seen in Bill’s official Pilot’s Log Book: (https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/520/24264/LLucasWE122826v1.1.pdf) his training consisted of being part of 16 Elementary Flying School at RAF Derby from 1940 to 41 , 8 School of Flying Training at RAF Montrose in 1941 and 20 Operational Training Units at RAF Lossiemouth in 1941 . He flew three different types of aircraft during his training, Miles Magister, Miles Master and Wellington I’s.
Bill’s training finally finished in August 1941 and he was posted to his first official squadron, IX Squadron at Honington. Here he flew the Wellington Bomber.

William Cragg
William (Bill) Lucas was born on January 16th, 1917 in Tooting Bec, London. He was educated at Bec Grammar School, and left at the age of 15 to work at a printing company before moving to the insurers London and Lancashire to work as an assessor. While working there, he developed his talent for athletics with the Belgrave Harriers, with his best discipline being the 5000 metres. His goal was to compete at the 1940 Olympic games. However, in 1940, Bill was called up to help the war effort and mindful of his father’s advice to avoid the army and his own dislike of the sea, he chose to join the RAF.
Initially he trained as a fighter pilot on Miles Magisters and Miles Masters, but by the time he had finished training, the Battle of Britain had been won and the need for bomber pilots was more urgent. So, he was reallocated to bombers and trained to fly the Wellington at RAF Lossiemouth. Bill Lucas · IBCC Digital Archive (lincoln.ac.uk)
Following completion of pilot training in August 1941, he was posted to RAF Honington and joined 9 Squadron flying Wellingtons. He flew 14 operational sorties – notably Cologne and Hamburg – before converting to Stirlings at RAF Waterbeach. He then joined 15 (Bomber) Squadron at RAF Wyton, flying the Short Stirling and, by August 1942, Bill had completed a full tour of 30 operational sorties (over 40 operations in total). Bill experienced tense encounters with German defences, having to take evasive action and also getting caught in a cone of five or six searchlights. To get out of the searchlight glare he had to do things with the aircraft which it was never meant to do. Returning from one mission they flew too close to Kiel and the airframe amassed a lot of bullet holes and an alarming loss of fuel. Crossing the North Sea, the tank indicators showed practically nothing and they had to divert into Woodbridge in Suffolk. The groundcrew estimated there was less than twenty-five gallons of fuel left (probably less than 6 minutes of flying time).
He was released from operational duties and was posted to RAF Lossiemouth as a flying instructor. Then in December 1944, he returned to operational flying and was posted to 162 Squadron, part of the Pathfinder force, to fly the Mosquito, an aircraft he described as “a bit quicker and more responsive; a nice aeroplane”. He completed a further 34 operational sorites with 162 Squadron, including missions over Kiel, Berlin, Hannover and Magdeburg. In recognition of his war services, Bill was awarded the DFC and was Mentioned in Despatches.
Squadron Leader Bill Lucas was released from the Service in January 1946 and returned to the insurance job he had left to join the RAF. Eventually, he left the company to become an insurance broker. He also returned to athletics and the Belgrave Harriers; he ran in various internationals and competed for Great Britain in the 5000m at the 1948 London Olympics. Athletics remained with him for the rest of his life and he gave his spare time freely, working in prominent roles in the administration of athletics. He remained a Belgrave Harrier committee member well into his 90s. He became known as “the golden voice of British Athletics” for his many years as stadium announcer at the White City .
In his later years, Bill remained prominent in RAF and Aircrew Associations. He, along with a small Band of Sussex veterans, was instrumental in helping to raise funds for the construction of the Bomber Command Memorial in London’s Green Park and the International Bomber Command Centre.

He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.

My dear David
The enclosed cheque is not from myself really – it comes from Cecil, for you. He wrote to me some weeks ago and said some money was being paid into my account (actually I think, the rents of his cottages at Sennen Cove, as it came from a Penzance lawyer) He wanted me to send this to you so that you could make a beginning whenever you wanted, in buying things for your house. So here it is and I do hope – as I know Cecil does – that you will enjoy spending it whenever you & Joyce get the chance.
I have – as I think you know – one or two bits & pieces to contribute – a little old walnut davenport desk that belonged to your great-grandmother's cousin (known as “Cousin Phippie” – short for Phillipa)
[page break]
and a glass-fronted books or china cupboard with shelves – and also a dressing-table mirror. They can come whenever the things from Southampton are being sent.
Your Mamma & I had a long day sorting out books at The Elms last week & hope to have another this week. The place really begins to look like itself - & really like a home again.
Lots of love
from
Nettie
I expect you will like to have Cecil's address

16/7/45.
My Dear Doris,
I guess it is high time I wrote you once again. As you will see by my address I’m on the job once again & can’t say that I am liking it very much. Am afraid things out here are vastly different from what we have been used to and it will take a lot of getting used to.
Well we went up to Balaklava as I had planned and one day went across to [indecipherable words]. On the way over I decided to stop at Watervale & make enquiries as to the whereabouts of Paynes. Found that we had passed the place about 5 miles back so, as we didn’t have too much petrol decided to call in on the way back. This I did & after numerous enquiries eventually found their place. Unfortunately no one was at home so I left the parcel with a note, inside on the kitchen table. Then learned that Mr. Payne was working at the flax mill at Auburn & so I called in and eventually found him. He seemed to know who I was and I explained about the parcel etc and had quite a chat with him & he has asked me to go up & spend a week-end with them. This I will do when opportunity presents itself.
When we got back to Adelaide there was a wire from Mrs. P. acknowledging the parcel & I daresay she has written you concerning it.
Well now after this I was due to report back to the R.A.A.F. & as usual there was a fair amount of red tape to go thro’. But after we had done all the necessaries we found that we were posted up here and came up on 3rd. This station is about 35 miles from Adelaide & 20 miles or so from Bal. so I am not very far from home & know the district well. The forms here are far too long for the amount of work that we have to do & consequently the days drag a little. We parade at 7.30 a.m. and don’t finish till 5.30 p.m. so you see it is a long day. It’s no joke getting up at 6.30 these days as it is mid-winter & it is a very cold one. Of course it is nowhere near as cold as it was over your way, but even so, I seem to feel it almost as much. Its not so bad during the day, but gets very cold in bed at nights.
The time off is not too bad and at the end of a fortnight we get 3 days off & then at the end of the next fortnight we have two days off. Naturally this suits everyone that lives around here very well & is a very welcome break.
[Page break]
While I was at home I heard quite a few records that brought back memories – my thoughts often drift back to some very pleasant times that I had with you.
How did the garden progress? Do hope it came up to your expectations. I wish I had been there to see some of the results.
I guess you are still at Parsons & still pop in to the kiosk a lot, or have you given up smoking? I’ve practically given up cigarettes, but still like the odd pipe. Do you see much of Elsie? Well I guess this is about all I can squeeze on this. Cheerio & all the best. Regards to all in Lincoln.
Sincerely yours. Allan.

I wrote to Alex the other day, but so far I’ve not had a reply so really don’t know where he is.
I applied for my discharge several weeks ago, but as it takes a long time to go thro’ I don’t know just whether I shall get out or not. If I do, I shall be going back to my old job at Balah, but am going to find it difficult to get a house in which to live. The housing problems out here seems as bad as it is over there.
