Description
An account of the resource
127 items. The collection consists of a selection of works created by Alfonsino ‘Angiolino’ Filiputti (1924-1999). A promising painter from childhood, Angiolino was initially fascinated by marine subjects but his parents’ financial hardships forced an end to his formal education after completing primary school. Thereafter, he took up painting as an absorbing pastime. Angiolino depicted some of the most dramatic and controversial aspects of the Second World War as seen from the perspective of San Giorgio di Nogaro, a small town in the Friuli region of Italy. Bombings, events reported by newspapers, broadcast by the radio or spread by eyewitnesses, became the subject of colourful paintings, in which news details were embellished by his own rich imaginings. Each work was accompanied by long pasted-on captions, so as to create fascinating works in which text and image were inseparable. After the war, however, interest in his work declined and Angiolino grew increasingly disenchanted as he lamented the lack of recognition accorded his art, of which he was proud.
The work of Angiolino Filiputti was rediscovered thanks to the efforts of Pierluigi Visintin (San Giorgio di Nogaro 1946 – Udine 2008), a figurehead of the Friulan cultural movement, author, journalist, screenwriter and translator of Greek and Latin classical works into the Friulan language. 183 temperas were eventually displayed in 2005 under the title "La guerra di Angiolino" (“Angiolino’s war”.) The exhibition toured many cities and towns, jointly curated by the late Pierluigi Visintin, the art critic Giancarlo Pauletto and Flavio Fabbroni, member of the Istituto Friulano per la Storia del Movimento di Liberazione (Institute for the history of the resistance movement in the Friuli region).
The IBCC Digital Archive would like to express its gratitude to Anna and Stefano Filiputti, the sons of Angiolino Filipputi, for granting permission to reproduce his works. The BCC Digital Archive is also grateful to Alessandra Bertolissi, wife of Pierluigi Visintin, Alessandra Kerservan, head of the publishing house Kappa Vu and Pietro Del Frate, mayor of San Giorgio di Nogaro.

LANCASHIRE CONSTABULARY,
(Air Raid Precautions Department),
PRESTON, 8th May, 1945
LANCASHIRE CIVIL DEFENCE WARDENS’ SERVICE
SPECIAL ORDER OF THE DAY
1. Now that the Stand-down of the Wardens’ Service in Lancashire has taken effect from the 2nd May, 1945, and has been closely followed by the cessation of hostilities in Europe, I should like to place on record my very deep appreciation of the magnificient [sic] work done by all member of the Lancashire Civil Defence Wardens’ Service.
2. We remember with pride the work performed by the Wardens in close liaison with the Police from 1938, to the present time, especially during those anxious days when the County was the target of enemy activity. In most cases your duties were performed after long hours at business or essential industry, in a manner which can only be described as depicting the greatest loyalty. All members of the Service have shown themselves to be willing and cheerful under most trying conditions.
3. In addition, many tasks have been undertaken by you in relation to the general public, and I realise and appreciate you have spent many hours of your time in this phase of public welfare. I can only say that I deeply and sincerely thank you for the wonderful support I have received from all members of the Wardens’ Service.
4. The team spirit has carried you forward on the peak of efficiency, and the traditions of the County of Lancaster have been worthily upheld by you all. I am most grateful to you and I trust that with the passing of the Lancashire Civil Defence Wardens’ Service you will carry the spirit of comradeship into the years of peace for the mutual benefit of the County and Country.
5. I would also like to take this opportunity of wishing you all every success in the peace years which now lie before us.

Dear Dad,
As I probably told you in my last note, I’m now on leave. We’ve been having such beautiful weather I thought I’d get away this time without taking my coat. But lo & behold when leaving on Sunday it was snowing & was bitterly cold.
Couldn’t get a train to York & had to go to Hull & thence to Leeds, where I stayed once more with Mrs Aberaydi.[?] She got a shock at seeing me on my own for we hadn’t been over to her place since Christmas. She and the old boy got very upset & got all the home addresses from me. The old laddie is a helpless invalid from the last war & loves to have someone to

natter to.
I had a day in London & it was even snowing down there. Ran into numerous blokes I knew including Doug Johnson, whom I’d not seen since his accident at [indecipherable word]. He got on to Mosquito’s & had bags of Berlin trips. Also Kev Shanahan[?] who was shot down over the Dover about a week before us. They all got out but the engineer & I think [two or three indecipherable words] young Kevin Dennis had a foot ….agged off.
[one indecipherable word] A.I.F. lads taken in Greece & Crete, [two or three indecipherable words] round London awaiting repat. At the moment I’m down in Dorset staying with Wally’s people, in this very quiet little village. I had intended going down to Torquay but the weather isn’t the best & I wouldn’t get any swimming unless I went into a heated pool.
I think most of the rest of the crew went up to Scotland this leave.

We celebrated Anzac day last week by getting airborne and doing our first operation as a new crew. It was a pretty easy stage to the Frisians & we got a certain amount of ribbing as “Janoks” when we got back & found we were the only kite on the A squadron who’d been hit by flak. It was just a small bit through the windscreen which made [two indecipherable words] home cold & uncomfortable [two indecipherable words].
It looks as though, thank God, we’ve had it [indecipherable word]. I don’t give a damn actually [indecipherable word] we are left over here on transport, sent to another theatre of war, or returned home on repatriation. I’ve been considering getting stuck into a few exams to take out a civil navigation licence but so far, as usual, I’ve been too tired & lazy.
Incidentally did South African snapshots ever turn up yet. I hope they didn’t go astray. Regards & love to all, Pat.

Hello dearest, was relieved today at 1 oclock, was fishing in a lake with a bent pin at the time. Hope to home very shortly. I am very fit and well, have been eating a lot just lately. Cant think of much to say, I guess I am too excited, I've gone right off my food. An armoured car came along, gosh were we glad to see it.
All my love
Walt.

[underlined] ORDER OF THE DAY. [underlined]
[underlined] To Members of the Civil Defence (General) Services. [underlined]
The tide of war has at last receded from the homes of the people and the time is come when the Civil Defence (General) Services are being demobilised.
At this moment I wish to express to local authorities and their officers, to the men and women of those Services, and to all those who have shared as helpers in the post-raid organisations including members of the W.V.S., my deep gratitude for what they have done in the long years of war.
In the time of heaviest attack there were nearly two hundred thousand whole-time members of the Services and one million and a quarter part-time members. There are now only some thirty-five thousand whole-time members and considerably less than a million part-time members; and I do not forget in this expression of gratitude those who have already left the Services.
Before the first great attack fell on London in September, 1940, no man could say how the Civil Defence organisation would work or how the Services would respond to the calls upon them. Once the attack started the issue was never in doubt.
The local authorities and their officers did their share magnificently and local government justified to the full the confidence that had been placed in it. Of the members of the Services we must all speak with honour and high praise.
Whether it be the Wardens, or the Rescue Parties, the Ambulance and First Aid Post Services or those in the Report Centres, you all showed through those long nights and days of watchfulness, danger and toil, a loyalty to your Services, a devotion to those in suffering and peril, and an unfailing courage which have brought to your uniform an honour that takes rank with the historic emblems of British greatness.
Your Services are no longer required for active Civil Devence:. but the Country will have need of your spirit of comradeship and service in the difficult days ahead. Too much leisure has been taken from you during the war, it is a precious part of home and family life; but I hope you may be able to spare some of it for the neighbourly tasks of the community in which you live.
You will take with you many memories of which you will have a right to be very proud, but none of you will have a prouder or happier memory than I in being associated with you in this great task so well accomplished.
To each one of you I give my thanks as I bid you farewell and Godspeed.
My colleagues the Secretary of State for Scotland and the Minister of Health, who have been associated with me in the administration of the Services are in the fullest accord with this message and have asked me to convey to you their thanks and good wishes.
HERBERT MORRISON.

Prisoners of war volunteer to defuse a bomb
Description
An account of the resource
People are held back outside the gate of a walled yard as a trolley carrying an unexploded bomb is pulled by five men, four dressed in green and one in a white shirt with the colours of the Italian flag. A young boy has climbed a column just outside the gate. In the foreground, three men are wearing armbands with the Italian colours visible. Two are gesturing with open arms towards the third man as he pulls at the strap of his gun.
Label reads “297”; signed by the author; Caption reads “2 MAGGIO 1945. - F.L. - R.P. -A.M.- A.S. assieme a 3 prigionieri istriani. Una mamma di questi soldati ignoti venne dall’Istria in cerca del figlio che sapeva a S. Giorgio, io la vidi, quanto pi’anse, ma nessuno l’aiutò.”
Caption translates as: “2 May 1945 – San Giorgio di Nogaro (Udine province). Spanish Schutzstaffel [sic] prisoners, who as a matter of facts were Istrian enlisted soldiers, offered to defuse and carried away a bomb that had not detonated following 23 February Pippo’s night bombing. It remained buried in the basement; it was removed and transported towards the main gate, where a crowd of onlookers gathered as the area was no longer cordoned off. It was 11.00 am; a terrible boom shocked the jubilant population. The bomb had exploded resulting in 25 victims (five patriots, two unknowns, and many injured); it was a massacre. This artwork was finished that same day. It depicts (from left to right): R.M., F.L., R.F., A.M., and A.S., together with three Istrian prisoners. One of the soldiers’ mothers came from Istria looking for her son, knowing he was in San Giorgio. I saw her. How much she cried! - no one helped her.”

Reg ‘Jimmy’ Woolgar was born and schooled in Hove. He began working life as a valuations assistant and was training to be a surveyor, which was interrupted when, in December 1939, he joined the RAF. Although he had aspirations to become a pilot, he trained as a wireless operator/air gunner instead. His wireless operator training was carried out at the wireless training school, RAF Yatesbury. https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/87/849/PWoolgarRLA1609.2.jpg His air gunnery training on Fairy Battle aircraft was conducted at RAF West Freugh. On 15 November 1940 he was promoted to sergeant and posted to No 10 OTU at RAF Upper Heyford. https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/files/original/87/845/PWoolgarRLA1601.2.jpg Initially flying Anson aircraft and then Hampdens with C Flight, he had his first ‘Lucky Jim’ moment, on 6 February 1941, when his Hampden aircraft was forced to crash land in a field near Cottesmore, in Lincolnshire. The aircraft was written off, but he and the pilot survived with minor injuries. At the end of operational training, instead of going directly onto operasations, he spent the next 5 months as a screen operator instructor. Eventually, on 1 September 1941, he was posted to 49 Squadron, Hampdens, at RAF Scampton https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/852 where his very first operational trip (described as a baptism of fire) was to Berlin. With headwinds going out and coming back, and nil visibility, it was likely the crew would have to bail out. Fortunately, the skipper found a break in the clouds and the aircraft landed wheels down in a field near Louth. The aircraft had to be recovered back to base, transported by road, on a low loader. On another occasion, on a mine laying operation to Oslo Fjord, his aircraft was peppered with anti-aircraft fire, it returned to base with 36 bullet holes in the fuselage and mainplane. A bullet had also passed through the upright of his gun sight while he was looking through it, whilst another tore through his flying suit. The nickname ‘Lucky Jim’ was beginning to stick.
In February 1942, on an operation to Manheim, the port engine, hit by flak, cut dead. Despite jettisoning all superfluous weight, which unfortunately included all the navigation equipment, the aircraft rapidly lost height, and the pilot ditched the aircraft in the English Channel. Whilst the crew had struggled to keep the aircraft airborne, (on a single engine), it had steered on a massive curve and unbeknown to them was headed down the English Channel, before it ditched. The crew scrambled out onto the wing and managed to inflate the dingy, then had to cut the cord attaching the dingy to the aircraft using a pair of nail scissors, moments before it sunk. In the water for hours, the crew thought they were drifting near the Yorkshire coast, but were rescued by a motor anti-submarine boat, much to their surprise, near the Isle of Wight.
Operational flying was intense, Reg would feel wound up before take-off and there was much apprehension on the way out to the target. Often, they flew through intense flak that was sometimes so close they could smell it. There was always a sense of sense of relief once they came away from the target. In between operations, each day was treated as it came along with many off-duty hours spent socialising in the local hostelries https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/853
After his first operational tour (he completed two) he was commissioned and became gunnery leader with 192 Squadron in 100 Group.
After the war ended, he signed on for an extra two years and was posted to Palestine as an air movements staff officer. Luck was again on his side when, one day, he was on his way to an Air Priorities Board Meeting at the King David Hotel when the hotel was bombed, resulting in many army and civilian casualties.
After a short tour in Kenya, as Senior Movements Staff Officer, he returned to Palestine flying with 38 Squadron until August 1947. In his flying career he amassed over 1000 flying hours. For services to his country Reg was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross https://ibccdigitalarchive.lincoln.ac.uk/omeka/collections/document/858
He was released from the RAF in September 1947. Initially employed as an assistant valuations officer, he studied to become a Chartered Surveyor and secured a job as a senior valuer with the City of London. He later became the planning valuer of the city. After 14 years he was made a partner at the firm St Quintin Son and Stanley. Reg retired in 1971.
