Description
An account of the resource
M A Niman’s RAF Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book, from 6th August 1941 to 2nd May 1945, detailing operations and instructional duties in the UK, Middle East and East Africa as a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner and “Special Operator”, including bomber transport, anti-submarine patrols and radio/radar counter-measures. The logbook starts with a note certifying flying hours (36 ‘trips’) contained in a logbook which was lost on the 16th July 1941 when a Bombay aircraft crashed into the sea at Gibraltar. It ends with a list of 31 ops flown with 10 Squadron obtained in 2002 from historical records, and a crew list. He was stationed at RAF Kemble (Overseas Aircraft Delivery Flight), RAF Heliopolis (No. 216 Bomber Transport Squadron), Wadi Gazouza/ Nanyuki (72 OTU), Kipevu, Mombasa (259 and 209 Squadrons), RAF Halfpenny Green (also known as RAF Bobbington) (No. 3 (O) AFU) and RAF Foulsham (192 Squadron). Aircraft in which flown: Bombay, Blenheim, Anson, Catalina, Short C-Class, Lodestar, Halifax and Whitley. Records a total of 14 night operations with 192 Squadron: some have no targets named, and some names are incorrectly spelled. These have been corrected where necessary by reference to the squadron ORB. Targets in Germany are: Augsburg, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Flensburg, Hamburg, Harburg, Kiel, Ladbergen, Langendreer, Nuremberg, Plauen and Stade. His pilots on operations were Flight Sergeant D T Witt, Squadron Leader K F Ferguson, Sergeant P Hickling, Pilot Officer Williams and Wing Commander V B Bennett, Flight Lieutenant Ford, Flying Officer Gray, Flying Officer Gilmour, Flight Lieutenant Helyer, Flight Lieutenant Dimant, Flying Officer Dutton, Flying Officer Field, Wing Commander Donaldson, and Flight Lieutenant Payne.

This item was sent to the IBCC Digital Archive already in digital form. P. 431766/2/P.4.A.2.
Sir,
I am commanded by the Air Council to express to you their great regret on learning that your son, Flying Officer Charles Blackley Hamilton, D.F.C., Royal Air Force, is missing as the result of air operations on 13th April, 1945, when a Mosquito aircraft in which he was flying as navigator set out for action and failed to return.
This does not necessarily mean that he is killed or wounded, and if he is a prisoner of war he may possibly be able to communicate with you. Present conditions in Germany, however, largely preclude communication, and the International Red Cross Committee no longer expects to receive reports from the German authorities. Should any news of him be received, you will, of course, be at once informed.
/The
J. Hamilton, Esq.,

Nr. Girvan,
Ayrshire.
[page break]
The Air Council desire me to convey to you their sympathy in your present anxiety.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient Servant,
Charles Evans

The Officers’ Mess,
R.A.F. Bradwell Bay,
ESSEX.
Wednesday 25th August.
My dear Mrs. Hamilton,
You must have wondered why I have not written sooner. I had hoped to be able to fly up to Ayr and visit you so that I could tell you personally all that I can remember of the night Charles and I were shot down, but on rejoining the Squadron I find that it is impossible as long as we are at Bradwell Bay. Later, if the opportunity arises, I will certainly take advantage of it.
It was not until a few minutes ago, when I was shown your letter by F/LT Custance, that I knew that you had written to me. I never received your letter and I very much
[page break]
regret what must have seemed inexcusably bad manners. I don’t know what address you were given by the Adjutant, but I have been in so many places since I returned to England that only my home address was sure to have found me. I am very sorry indeed.
I dont know how much Ken Davison was able to tell you of the events of that night, but I feel that you would prefer me to tell you all I can, both good and bad, as they happened.
We had destroyed our fifth enemy aircraft together only two nights before, and for the third night in succession were detailed for what is know [sic] as “Bomber support” for a raid on Kiel.

When it was all over and the bombers were on their way home we had to stay until the end of our patrol time and we were hit over the target and set on fire. Charles stopped the engine when I asked him to, because it was on fire – the fire went out, but another in the wing was getting rapidly worse and we decided between us that it would be sagest to head towards Field Marshal Montgomery’s armies to the South-West, at that time surrounding Bremen: to do this we had to cross about thirty miles of sea as against the three hundred which lay between us and home.
As soon as we were hit I told Charles to put on his parachute pack and be ready to bale out should anything else happen – this he did:
[page break]
a few minutes later we were going along very slowly, on fire and on one engine in what I could only guess to be the right direction: I was blind in one eye and we had no compass left, the aircraft was like a torch and we could not maintain height properly. A German night fighter must have seen us because, not long after, there was another very loud explosion and the aeroplane went completely out of control and large pieces fell off. It was going down in a steep dive and I shouted to Charles to get out, which he had already started to do.
I still could not see with one eye, and with the cockpit full of smoke and fumes and on fire, it was very confusing.
[page break]
[underlined] 3 [/underlined]
While Charles was getting out through the door I was trying to get the roof escape-hatch open and to undo my straps because I knew that there would not time for both of us to leave by the door.
After that I found myself half in and half-out of the roof, caught, I think, by my parachute. The next thing I knew was that I was far from the aircraft & trying to find my ripcord.
I came down just on the land near the coast at the top of the bulge of land which lies between Wessemunde and Hamburg, and after walking all night I lay up all next day. When I was eventually forced to give myself up I was locked up with some Russian slave labourers before being taken to a Luftwaffe [inserted] camp [/inserted] All the time I
[page break]
expected to hear from the Germans some news of Charles because when I last saw him he was quite unhurt: then when they never mentioned him I thought it probable that he was still walking: you will appreciate that it was impossible for me to ask the Germans whether they had captured another officer because it would have immediately given away the fact that I was not the day-fighter pilot for which they took me and they would have pressed me for information about secret equipment etc. I asked all my fellow prisoners whether they had come across him in their travels across Germany but they all said no and I began to think that he must have landed in the sea.
He was very calm throughout a

very unpleasant ordeal and when I was hit he managed to find a handkerchief to stop the bleeding. We had been together at West Malling in 1941 and had always been the best of friends. All our successes had been together and until we crewed up neither of us had shot down anything.
It is very hard for me, who have returned at last from that sortie, to find words to tell you my feelings. All I can say is how sorry I am and how proud I was to fly with him. This is very inadequate, I know, and I ask you to forgive me for that.
If there is anything at all that I can do to help you in any way please let me know, and I will be happy if I can do so in any way.
Yours very sincerely,
[underlined] Brian Thomas. [/underlined]

17th December ‘45
Sir,
I am directed to inform you, with deep regret, that in view of the time which has elapsed since your son, Flying Officer C.B. Hamilton, D.F.C., was reported missing and the absence of evidence of his survival, it must be concluded that he has lost his life.
In these circumstances, and assuming that you have no information which would indicate that he is alive, his death has now been presumed, for official purposes, to have occurred on 13th April, 1945.
In conveying this information, I am to express to you the sympathy of the Air Ministry in the anxiety you have suffered, and in your bereavement.
I am, Sir,
Your obedient Servant,

Dear Marie,
Thanks firstly for the cable & the couple of airgraphs which have arrived over the last 2 days (today's was only written on the 2nd). I've been doing pretty well recently with mail. News certainly gets around. One day I had 12 & yesterday [indecipherable number].
I've had airletters from the parents of each of the boys & it gives me wonderful satisfaction to know that I appear to have been at least some consolation in each case. They have all taken it very well indeed although Dr Shelton was particularly upset when he wrote me.
In all I got & dispatched [indecipherable number] group photographs to friends & relatives – I sent one home. I don't
[page break]
know why but I'm already starting to get parcels from round England here as well as some very enticing invitations.
Maurice Dyer, with whom as you will no doubt remember, I've been so pally since [indecipherable word] did not come back here last Sunday. I guess I'd better write his wife one of these days.
Still bludging around & getting no air under my feet. Rather monotonous but it is not so bad now that we are having weather almost worthy of an Australian spring. McDonald still has not left the conversion unit & the way things are going I think we've just about had it. It can't last much longer over here. However I would like to have had another crack before it packs in.
You seem to have been very busy over Easter but it is probably better that way that being quietly on your own. Pleased to know the old fair was once more a success.
Thank the rest of the family for letters. I'll eventually get round to answering them. This is my 6th tonight
[page break]
“Willie” Williams my new bomb aimer has just come in to see me. He is rather flushed as he nicked off to Bridlington today & sunbathed. I wish he’d have come to suggest it to me before he went.
We had intended having a big beano this week Roger Laing & Wally’s 21st were coming off as well as Alan’s 22nd, my 23rd all within 6th & 16th April. Roger is in getting drunk tonight (his birthday) but as I didn’t even feel like it for my own, I didn’t bother tonight.
I’d forgotten about the [indecipherable word] fiver you’d better take out some more tickets on my behalf. Sorry to hear the Phelan kids have been sick. Did the drought break?
Thanks again for all the Masses etc. over the prang. And the letters, Pleased the concert went off O.K.
Well, Marie, space is rather limited so I’ll bid you all the best again. There is no need to worry I haven’t so much as developed the familiar “twitch” so prevalent amongst operational aircrew. My only regret is that I don’t look like having another crack.
Love to all, Pat.

Letter from Pat Hogan to Miss Marie Hogan
Description
An account of the resource
Reports arrival of recent mail. Writes that he has received letters from the parents of each of the boys who seem to have taken it well apart from on father who was upset when he wrote. Catches up with other news of acquaintances. Says life is monotonous but the weather is better. Comments that it could not last much longer but he would have liked another crack at it before it was over. Discusses activities at home and at his location. Mentions parties planned for various events. Continues with other gossip and tells he not to worry as he has not developed the "twitch" prevalent amongst operational aircrew.
