[indecipherable sentence]
You are to travel in Liberator aircraft . . . . . of No. 10 Squadron 205 (Heavy Bomber) Group, Royal Air Force. The crew is:-
Captain . . . . .
Navigator . . . . .
Wireless Operator . . . . .
Engineer . . . . .
[indecipherable letters] A/C Passenger . . . . .
We are proud to have been entrusted with the job of taking you home, and we shall do all we can to make your journey safe; comfortable and interesting.
Liberators are made in the U.S.A., have a wing span of 110 feet, and weigh nearly 30 tons when taking off on these journeys. Over 2000 gallons of petrol are carried, and this will take the aircraft more than 2000 miles. Your journey is about 1200 miles, and will take about 7 hours. Naturally, every aircraft has already flown the Atlantic when it was delivered.
Whilst taxying before and after the flight, the fuselage will echo with the howl of electric motors driving fuel and hydraulic pumps, and spluttering of an auxiliary engine. There may also be a slight smell of petrol or exhaust fumes, and the brakes may cause the aircraft to lurch from side to side. But once airborne you will find everything quite smooth and not very noisy. We are sorry that from most of the seats it is not possible to see outside.
Finally a few points to remember:-
(i) The Captain is in sole charge, irrespective of rank.
(ii) DEFINITELY NO SMOKING
(iii) The aircraft is not a regular transport, and switches, cocks, control cables and wiring are exposed and within your reach. In almost every case tampering with them would be catastrophic. Remember what curiosity did to the cat; even if you feel sure that a certain tap might deliver a pint of beer, TOUCH NOTHING and don't let anybody else do so either.
(iv) Take care that your kit and blankets do not fall into control cables etc.
(v) In the "Bomb Bay" portion of the aircraft, which is fitted with wooden seats, you may walk only on the central "catwalk" and on the seats themselves, NOT on the metal floor.
(vi) There is considerable acceleration during take off and decceleration [sic] when braking after landing. Brace yourselves in your seats so that you are not thrown against your neighbours. You will be told when the aircraft is about to land.
(vii) Toilet arrangements are very makeshift and bear a striking resemblance to some old oil drums. As movement of passengers around the aircraft must be kept to a minimum, please do your best before getting aboard!!
(viii) Take care of the equipment loaned to you, and hand

Description
An account of the resource
A 6 page collection of target photographs and sortie reports.
Page 1: Sortie report for an operation to Bruck Marshalling yards
Page 2:Vertical aerial target photograph of an unknown location showing some ground detail as tracer trails. Not all of the caption can be seen but it is dated 8/9 Apr 1945.
Page 3: Sortie report for an operation to Trento
Page 4: A copy of the photograph on page 2. The upper part contains tracer trails while, in the lower part, ground detail is visible but no features can be identified. The caption reads:
2829 104/90 8/9-APR-45. F8".//9.500'.→[redacted]. TRENTO
F. 2x1000. 10x500 MkIII23. F/O WARD. (F/O SCOTT B/A). 8.
Below this photo can be seen part of a sortie report.
Page 5: Sortie report for an operation to troop concentrations at Argenta.
Page 6: Pair of target photograph but the image quality is poor and no details can be discerned in either. The captions indicate that Villach was the target for both, though the operations took place on different days.
The last page of this collection is an information form for passengers being repatriated on 104 Sqn Liberator aircraft. It gives information on what to expect and rules to follow during the flight.

Description
An account of the resource
M A Niman’s RAF Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book, from 6th August 1941 to 2nd May 1945, detailing operations and instructional duties in the UK, Middle East and East Africa as a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner and “Special Operator”, including bomber transport, anti-submarine patrols and radio/radar counter-measures. The logbook starts with a note certifying flying hours (36 ‘trips’) contained in a logbook which was lost on the 16th July 1941 when a Bombay aircraft crashed into the sea at Gibraltar. It ends with a list of 31 ops flown with 10 Squadron obtained in 2002 from historical records, and a crew list. He was stationed at RAF Kemble (Overseas Aircraft Delivery Flight), RAF Heliopolis (No. 216 Bomber Transport Squadron), Wadi Gazouza/ Nanyuki (72 OTU), Kipevu, Mombasa (259 and 209 Squadrons), RAF Halfpenny Green (also known as RAF Bobbington) (No. 3 (O) AFU) and RAF Foulsham (192 Squadron). Aircraft in which flown: Bombay, Blenheim, Anson, Catalina, Short C-Class, Lodestar, Halifax and Whitley. Records a total of 14 night operations with 192 Squadron: some have no targets named, and some names are incorrectly spelled. These have been corrected where necessary by reference to the squadron ORB. Targets in Germany are: Augsburg, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Flensburg, Hamburg, Harburg, Kiel, Ladbergen, Langendreer, Nuremberg, Plauen and Stade. His pilots on operations were Flight Sergeant D T Witt, Squadron Leader K F Ferguson, Sergeant P Hickling, Pilot Officer Williams and Wing Commander V B Bennett, Flight Lieutenant Ford, Flying Officer Gray, Flying Officer Gilmour, Flight Lieutenant Helyer, Flight Lieutenant Dimant, Flying Officer Dutton, Flying Officer Field, Wing Commander Donaldson, and Flight Lieutenant Payne.<br /><br /><span data-contrast="auto" xml:lang="EN-GB" lang="EN-GB" class="TextRun SCXW246595534 BCX0"><span class="NormalTextRun SCXW246595534 BCX0">This item was sent to the IBCC Digital Archive already in digital form. Flight Engineer, 420 Squadron RCAF, Bomber Command, RAF, WWII
Regarding myself and my RAF years, I was only 13 when the war started, evacuated in 1940 to all places the midlands, between Birmingham and Coventry. I didn't stay long though and returned to my home in Thanet in time to watch the second half of the Battle of Britain. I joined the ATC in 1942 and volunteered for aircrew when I was 17. I was called up in Feh. 1944 as F/E u/t and sent to Locking after ITW in Cornwall. Then on to St. Athan, passing out on my 19th. birthday.
Spot of leave, then attached to the R.C.A.F. who were short of flight engineers,
joined my crew and after HCU and posted to 420 Squadron in December 1944. I see from my log book that my first flight in a Halifax was on Jan 2nd. 1945..! We went on to do 11 op's before the end of the war, but as we all know now, the war was virtually over by then. However, we didn't know that and they were still shooting at us, and we saw an ME 163, also watched a V2 fired from Belgium whilst on our way home early one morning.
Among our op's were one or two quite spectacular ones such as the long flight down to Leipzig in daylight on April 1Oth. , and the Heligoland raid on the 18th. This was remembered mostly for the Lancaster which went in several thousand feet below, and just in front of us dropping a 'grand slam' bomb on the intersection of the two runways. Also for flying through the wreckage of a Halifax which exploded just in front of us. Other things of note were three trips to Hamburg in one week, and a very hairy trip to Munster on March 25th for which we took MZ 620, the spare Hally from 425 squadron, ours going u/s at the last moment. This was due for an engine change and we went over the target some minutes after, and quite a bit below the others picking up a few holes in the process.
I also note that we had two fighter encounters on the night of April 8th. and had to land away from base. ,
After V-E day I was remustered and trained as fitter/marine with the intention of joining air/sea rescue services in the Pacific for the expected invasion of Japan.
The atom bomb however put an end to this and I finished my service in 1947 on
marine-craft in Singapore.
My business life since then has been in photography - firstly commercial work in general, then a spell in the aviation world but unwanted after the S.R.53 which I was busy with was cancelled in 1957.
I returned to my own neck of the woods and started my own business which has kept us in groceries ever since.
I did a lot of aviation pictures, including concorde air-to-air and still fly with a friend who owns a Cessna. I also still fly radio controlled models which keep the old reflexes in trim. One final thing - to complete the picture so to speak, I took one of my models up to Yorkshire and flew it from my old runway at Tholthorpe..!
That's enough bull, I'll attach a few pictures which you might find interesting, the first is my crew, our skipper Les Rush from Vancouver is in the middle and yours truly in the long streak on the right. ·

Then a couple of bombing up' PT-R and a couple of me, one at the FIE panel, and one by the wheel (big weren't they ?)
