Gordon Lett
Ernest Gordon Appleford Lett
E G A Lett
Description
An account of the resource
56 items. The collection concerns Major Ernest Gordon Appleford Lett, DSO (1910-1989, 50112), a British Army officer and partisan leader in Italy. He was taken prisoner after the fall of Tobruk and detained in different camps in Italy. After the September 1943 armistice, rather than re-joining Allied forces, he took to the mountains and established contacts with Resistance forces active in the Apennines between Liguria and Toscana. Lett founded and led the Battaglione Internazionale, a multinational unit that successfully engaged Black Brigades and German units. Later, when reliable lines of communication were secured, supplies were dropped by air and the Battaglione was supplemented by Special Operations Executive personnel. Gordon Lett was relieved by Major John Henderson in March 1945. After the war, Lett was awarded the DSO and received the Medaglia Argento al valor militare.
The collection consists of a selection of Gordon Lett's papers and official correspondence with key figures of the local Resistance movement. They include Colonnello Mario Fontana (‘Cossu’, or ‘Turchi’), Comandante Luciano Scotti (‘Vittorio’ or ‘Gonzaga’), Commissario Politico Anselmo Corsini ('Ambrosio', or ‘Max’) and Mario Fortelli, a lawyer acting as liaison officer with the local Allied Military Mission.
Documents consist of military assessments, notes on air drops, a ciphers book, a draft of a radio message sent via clandestine radio operators, and a request for tactical bombing. The collection contains notes on an aircraft crash, the military funeral and the subsequent burial of the aircrew. A specific subset includes correspondence, plans and reports about the construction of an improvised landing strip for Allied aircraft operating behind enemy lines.
All documents were deposited at the La Spezia City Council and then re-housed in 1972 at the Istituto spezzino per la Storia della Resistenza e dell’Età Contemporanea, where they have been preserved ever since. The selection published here has been curated by Tiziano Vernazza.

Twenty Ninth Operation.
LUTZENDORF
Wednesday Night. March 14th 1945.
Airborne 9hrs 30mins

PACKED NAZI TROOP TOWNS HIT
Homburg and Zweibruecken, two small towns packed with German troops and military stores, 15 miles east of Saarbruecken, have been hit by two forces of R.A.F. “heavies.”
They were heavily bombed as if they had been large industrial cities because they have become strongpoints in the German defence system. Pilots reported big explosions, probably munition stores.
Altogether, more than 1000 1000[sic] aircraft were sent out by Bomber Command yesterday.
Berlin was attacked last night for the twenty-third successive night by Mosquitoes carrying 4000lb bombs.
The Lutzendorf oil plant near Halle in Saxony was attacked by Lancasters in face of intense night fighter opposition.
Heavy guns put up a barrage which fell off however under the concentration of bombing.
Smoke from oil fires rose to a height of 700 feet.
Twelve of our bombers are missing.
The German air-raid warning radio said to-day that Allied bombers were flying eastwards west of Quakenbrueck and Guterslom – a route to Hanover and Brunswick – and over the Kassel area.
Fighters and fast bombers were reported over the Ruhr and Bielefeld areas.
RAF KEEP IT UP
Nuremberg, Berlin
Express Air Reporter
Bombers of the R.A.F. went to Germany last night “in strength” with Nuremberg and [underlined] Wurzburg [/underlined] as their main objectives.
Nuremberg, home of the pre-war Nazi rallies, and Wurzburg, 65 miles to the north-west, both important centres of communications and industry, were the main targets.
Berlin was also bombed for the 25th successive night.
Unconfirmed reports from Stockholm say that Hitler was in Zossen, the German Army’s G.H.Q., 20 miles south of Berlin, when it was bombed on Thursday.
Yesterday, for the fifth day running, Mediterranean bombers pounded the remaining oil plants round Vienna.

LONDON
17/3/45
Dear Dad,
Thanks for the cable I picked up yesterday at Auspo. I'm just finishing the last of my leave at the moment & am feeling pretty fit. I waited around the station until the Friday when the boys were buried at Harrogate, [deleted] and [/deleted] except Wally of course, whose body was sent down to Dorchester for a private funeral.
I've spent most of my time in and around London. Some of the tasks I set myself in looking up friends, relatives & girl friends of the lads were not so good. I also went down to Sussex for a couple of days, struck beautiful weather & believe me it was grand to laze away in the sun on the sea fronts of Brighton & Bognor. Brighton has changed
[page break]
considerably of late, now they are clearing away mines, barbed wire etc. sewing new lawns, splashing a bit of paint around & opening the place up to the public.
I intended going down to Dorchester on return but squibbed it this time. Admittedly it is hardly in keeping with certain customs to be continually on the move seeing shows & going to dances etc. but I found whilst waiting for the funerals that hanging around by myself was definitely detrimental to my nervous system & hence I've given myself no further opportunity to mope.
I've got to start back sometime tomorrow & hence I should soon know what the future holds in store for me. I presume, though, that I'll be sent back to a training unit to pick up a new crew.
Bill Bullen & Roger Laing have to report straight back to another squadron on return from this leave. Apparently there is a crew there requiring two gunners in a hurry.
[page break]
There is not the slightest need to worry about me for I feel quite OK. However I'm quite convinced that this business is entirely a matter of luck & if necessary I'll have another go without the slightest “complex”.
I trust you are all pretty fit. Thanks for the prayers – keep 'em up. Ill write again when I know what my fate is.
Love to all at home.
Pat.

Description
An account of the resource
Thanks him for cable and that he had just finished the last of his leave. Mention staying on base until the rest of his crew apart from one were buried at Harrogate. The other crew member's body was sent to Dorchester for a private funeral. Writes of his activities on leave mostly around London and Surrey looking up relations, friends and girl friends of his crew. Mentions visits to Brighton and Bognor Regis. Mentions that hanging around waiting for funeral was detrimental to his nervous system. Speculates on his future assuming he would be sent to a training unit to pick up a new crew. Catches up with news of colleagues and says that they should not worry about him and that he was convinced that the business was a matter of luck and that he would have another go without the slightest complex.

Description
An account of the resource
24 items. The collection concerns Tadeusz Wier (b.1920) and contains his log books, memoirs, photographs and documents. He flew operations as a pilot with 300 Squadron.

Requires
A related resource that is required by the described resource to support its function, delivery, or coherence.
Tadeusz Wierzbowski grew up on a farm near Zgierz, Poland. He learned to fly at the training school at Deblin and escaped from the Nazi and Russian invasions in 1939. He travelled through Romania to the Black Sea, and was in France when the Nazis invaded. He eventually arrived in Liverpool on the Andura Star in June 1940.
He flew as an instructor, training others to fly for three years, before he was posted into combat with 300 Squadron. He flew 25 operations as a Lancaster pilot from RAF Faldingworth including bombing Hitler’s Eagle’s nest at Berchtesgaden.
Tadeusz was a test pilot after the war and shortened his name to Wier to make it easier for air traffic control officers. Over his career, he flew over 40 different aircraft types from Polish RWD 8 trainers to Vampire jets.
