Description
An account of the resource
M A Niman’s RAF Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book, from 6th August 1941 to 2nd May 1945, detailing operations and instructional duties in the UK, Middle East and East Africa as a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner and “Special Operator”, including bomber transport, anti-submarine patrols and radio/radar counter-measures. The logbook starts with a note certifying flying hours (36 ‘trips’) contained in a logbook which was lost on the 16th July 1941 when a Bombay aircraft crashed into the sea at Gibraltar. It ends with a list of 31 ops flown with 10 Squadron obtained in 2002 from historical records, and a crew list. He was stationed at RAF Kemble (Overseas Aircraft Delivery Flight), RAF Heliopolis (No. 216 Bomber Transport Squadron), Wadi Gazouza/ Nanyuki (72 OTU), Kipevu, Mombasa (259 and 209 Squadrons), RAF Halfpenny Green (also known as RAF Bobbington) (No. 3 (O) AFU) and RAF Foulsham (192 Squadron). Aircraft in which flown: Bombay, Blenheim, Anson, Catalina, Short C-Class, Lodestar, Halifax and Whitley. Records a total of 14 night operations with 192 Squadron: some have no targets named, and some names are incorrectly spelled. These have been corrected where necessary by reference to the squadron ORB. Targets in Germany are: Augsburg, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Flensburg, Hamburg, Harburg, Kiel, Ladbergen, Langendreer, Nuremberg, Plauen and Stade. His pilots on operations were Flight Sergeant D T Witt, Squadron Leader K F Ferguson, Sergeant P Hickling, Pilot Officer Williams and Wing Commander V B Bennett, Flight Lieutenant Ford, Flying Officer Gray, Flying Officer Gilmour, Flight Lieutenant Helyer, Flight Lieutenant Dimant, Flying Officer Dutton, Flying Officer Field, Wing Commander Donaldson, and Flight Lieutenant Payne.

This item was sent to the IBCC Digital Archive already in digital form. T/o 1435 Kinloss for a navigation training detail. At approximately 1505, the Anson was seen diving, with both engines running at full power, from 4,000 feet and failing to recover before hitting the ground roughly a mile E of Arbroath airfield, Angus. An examination of the wreckage revealed that most of the fabric had peeled away from the starboard wing. All rest in cemeteries scattered across the United Kingdom and it seems likely that the funeral for W/O Farlam of Neutral Bay in New South Wales was arranged by relatives as he is buried in Surrey at Cheam (St. Dunstan) Churchyard, Sutton and Cheam.

T/o 1525 Honeybourne for a navigation exercise involving the crew, which was made up of a screened pilot and wireless operator, four trainees and two passengers, in overwater flying. At 1955, the bomber returned to base and was seen, while on the cross-wind leg, to lower the flaps. As it did so, so the nose appeared to rise quite sharply. Immediately, the flaps were retracted and the Whitley continued with its approach but as it turned finals, and the flaps were once again lowered, the nose pitched up and the aircraft stalled, plunging to the ground on the boundary of the airfield, where it burst into flames. Those who died rest in various cemeteries across the United Kingdom. This was the first major accident involving an aircraft from the unit since its formation in mid-March 1942.

My Dear Mrs Wareing,
It was very good of you indeed to let us know of Miss Pillot in France and with your consent I would love to write her and thank her for her kindness.
It gives us great pleasure indeed to know that the boys’ graves are being attended to, and immediately after the war I have every intention of going over to see them.
We do hope and pray that your husband will come back safely and soon to you. Thanking you very much again for being good enough to let us have this address.
Yours sincerely.
Mrs M. Campbell

Letter to Joan Wareing from Margaret Day
Description
An account of the resource
It begins by thanking Mrs Wareing for her letter. Goes on to mention getting a letter from Flight Lieutenant Hill telling the true story but she was sad about news of her Lou. She was glad that two got back safely and was sorry to hear of the captains burns. Thanks her for putting her in touch with the French girl who was looking after the graves.
