His pilot on 56 operations was Flight Lieutenant L B Lawson and for one was Wing Commander L E Good. Served at RAF Hixon, RAF Blyton, RAF Hemswell, RAF Binbrook. Aircraft flown were Anson, Oxford, Wellington, Halifax, Lancaster. Carried out 15 night and 4 day operations with 460 Squadron as bomb aimer to Essen, Nuremberg, Hannover, Hanau-Frankfurt, Merseburg, Dresden, Chemnitz, Dortmund, Duisburg, Pforzheim, Mannheim, Cologne, Misburg-Hannover, Langendreer-Bochum, Kiel, Heligoland. Also carried out two Operation Manna, three Operation Exodus and one Cook’s Tour flights.

Based at: RAF Yatesbury (No. 2 Signals School), RAF Evanton (No. 8 Air Gunnery School), RAF Harwell and RAF Hamstead Norris (No. 15 OTU), RAF Leconfield (196 Squadron), RAF Driffield (No.1484 Bombing and Gunnery Flight), RAF Salbani (355 squadron), RAF Digri and RAF Raipur (1341 Special Duty Flight, 298 Squadron), RAF Baroda (1334 TSCU). Aircraft flown: Dominie, Proctor, Botha, Wellington, Anson, Oxford, Liberator, Halifax, Dakota.
Records a total of 25 night operations (plus one with Duties Not Carried Out) with 196 Squadron. Targets in Germany, France and the Netherlands are: Bochum, Brest (minelaying), Cologne, Dortmund, Duisberg, Dusseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt, Frisians (minelaying), Gelsenkirchen, Heligoland Bight (minelaying), Kiel, Krefeld, Lorient (minelaying), Manheim, Mulheim, St Nazaire, Wuppertal.
Pilots on operations with 196 Squadron were W/O Ritchie and Sgt Sneddon.
Also records 33 operations (23 Night, 10 day, 5 with Duties Not Carried Out) with 355 Squadron against Japanese forces during the Burma campaign 1944-5. Targets in Burma, Thailand and Vietnam include:

Donald Evans RAF navigator’s, air bomber’s, air gunner’s and flight engineer’s flying log book
D Evans’s Flight Engineer’s Flying Log Book covering the period from 19 June 1944 to 26 June 1947, detailing his flying training and operations flown as Flight Engineer. He was stationed at RAF St Athan (4 SoTT), RAF Winthorpe (1661 HCU), RAF Syerston (5 LFS), RAF Metheringham (106 Squadron), RAF Warboys (PNTU), RAF Coningsby and RAF Hemswell (83 Squadron). Aircraft flown in were Stirling, Lancaster and Lincoln. He flew on 13 night operations with 106 Squadron and 11 with 83 Squadron, total 24 (but his total in log book is 25). Targets were Munster, Karlsruhe, Kaiserlauten, Brunswick, Bergen, Dusseldorf, Dortmund-Ems canal, Hamburg, Trondheim, Munich, Horten, mining (Danzig Bay), Bohlen, Lutzkendorf, Wurtsburg, Molbis, Cham and Komotau. Post war he flew on one Exodus operation, one Cooks Tour operation and 3 Dodge operations. His pilots on operations were Flying Officer Anderson, Flight Lieutenant Brown and Flight Lieutenant Watts. The four final pages of his log book are filled with autographs from his colleagues.

Posted to No. 4 AFU, 11 OTU, 1653 CU, 3 LFS, and 195 Squadron for operations. After the war transferred to Transport Command, 1332 HCU, 246 and 511 Squadrons.

M A Niman’s RAF observer’s and air gunner’s flying log book
M A Niman’s RAF Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book, from 6th August 1941 to 2nd May 1945, detailing operations and instructional duties in the UK, Middle East and East Africa as a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner and “Special Operator”, including bomber transport, anti-submarine patrols and radio/radar counter-measures. The logbook starts with a note certifying flying hours (36 ‘trips’) contained in a logbook which was lost on the 16th July 1941 when a Bombay aircraft crashed into the sea at Gibraltar. It ends with a list of 31 ops flown with 10 Squadron obtained in 2002 from historical records, and a crew list. He was stationed at RAF Kemble (Overseas Aircraft Delivery Flight), RAF Heliopolis (No. 216 Bomber Transport Squadron), Wadi Gazouza/ Nanyuki (72 OTU), Kipevu, Mombasa (259 and 209 Squadrons), RAF Halfpenny Green (also known as RAF Bobbington) (No. 3 (O) AFU) and RAF Foulsham (192 Squadron). Aircraft in which flown: Bombay, Blenheim, Anson, Catalina, Short C-Class, Lodestar, Halifax and Whitley. Records a total of 14 night operations with 192 Squadron: some have no targets named, and some names are incorrectly spelled. These have been corrected where necessary by reference to the squadron ORB. Targets in Germany are: Augsburg, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Flensburg, Hamburg, Harburg, Kiel, Ladbergen, Langendreer, Nuremberg, Plauen and Stade. Eric Pick's Royal Air Force navigator’s, air bomber’s and air gunner’s flying log book
Frederick Pick’s Wireless Operator’s Flying Log Book covering the period from 05 September 1943 to 07 April 1945. Detailing his flying training and operations flown as wireless operator. He was stationed at RAF Yatesbury (2 Radio School), RAF Millom (2 OAFU}, RAF Upper Heyford (16 OTU), RAF Syerston (5 LFS), RAF East Kirkby (57 Squadron) and RAF Balderton (227 Squadron) and RAF Strubby (227 Squadron). Aircraft flown in were Dominie, Proctor, Anson, Wellington, Stirling and Lancaster. He flew on seven night four day operations with 57 Squadron and 19 night and three day operations with 227 Squadron, to Le Havre, Darmstadt, Stuttgart, Boulogne, Bremerhaven, Munchen - Gladbach, Wilhelmshaven, Bremen, Flushing sea dykes, Brunswick, Nuremburg, Walcheren, Harburg, Duren, Ladbergen, Munich, Heilbron, St Vith, Houffalize, Gravenhorst, Politz, Merseberg, Brux, Siegen, Horten, Lutzendorf, Hamburg, Wesel, Dortmund and Molbis. Total 33. His pilot on operations was Flight Lieutenant Robertshawe. On an operation to Munich on the 26 November his main navigation aid caught fire. Having extinguished the fire he used what equipment he had to assist the navigator to bomb successfully and return to base. He was awarded a Green Endorsement on 12 January 1945 by the Group Captain O.C. RAF Balderton.

He also flew two Cook's Tour flights. His pilots on operations were Flight Lieutenant Morgan and Pilot Officer Weight.

Reports that his son Sergeant Ronald Leslie Gard was missing as a result of air operations on the night 14/15 February 1945 when the Lancaster in which he was flying as rear gunner failed to return. Enquiries were being made through the International Red Cross.

G A Mills’ RAF Observer’s and Air Gunner’s Flying Log Book, from 18th October 1943 to 24th May 1952, detailing training, operations and instructional duties as an air gunner, and post-war duties including Operation Sunray. Based at RAF Penrhos (No.9 (O)AFU), RAF Little Horwood and RAF Wing (26 OTU), RAF Stradishall (1657 Conversion Unit), RAF Methwold (149 and 218 Squadrons), RAF Feltwell (No.3 Lancaster Finishing School), RAF Wratting Common (1651 Conversion Unit), RAF Mepal (75 (NZ) Squadron and 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron), RAF Mildenhall (44 (Rhodesia) Squadron), RAF Leconfield (Central Gunnery School), RAF North Luffenham (1653 Heavy Conversion Unit), RAF Lindholme (230 Operational Conversion Unit), RAF Waddington and RAF Binbrook (50 Squadron), RAF Shallufa and RAF Hemswell (83 Squadron). Aircraft in which flown: Anson, Wellington, Stirling, Lancaster, Lincoln. Also Meteor and Dakota as a passenger. Records a total of 33 operations, sometimes only as “Special Op” with no target named. Recorded targets in France, Germany, Netherlands and Norway are: Alençon, Brest, Cologne, Dessau, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Gladbach, Hamm, Kiel, Krefeld, La Rochelle, Langendreer, Morlaix, Oslo, Regensburg, The Hague and Wesel. His pilots on operations were Squadron Leader Hutchins, Flight Sergeant Holmes, Flying Officer Murley, Flying Officer Martin, Flying Officer Baker and Squadron Leader McKenna DFC. Proficiency assessments include: “Above average in all gunnery subjects”, “A most sound and able gunner, manner, bearing and discipline unquestionable”

Flying log book for navigator’s, air bomber’s, air gunners, flight engineers for R Orton, air gunner, covering the period from 27 May 1944 to 7 October 1945. Detailing his flying training and operations flown. He was stationed at RAF Stormey Down, RAF Finningley, RAF Worksop, RAF Lindholme, RAF Ingham, RAF Hemswell, RAF Bruntingthorpe, RAF Catterick, RAF Newmarket, and RAF Kirkham. Aircraft flown in were Anson, Wellington, Halifax, and Lancaster. He flew a total of 24 operations with 150 Squadron, 8 daylight and 16 night, plus 5 Operation Manna and one Operation Dodge. Targets were Nurnberg, Hannover, Merseburg, Zeitz, Stuttgart, Mannheim, Wiesbaden, Kleve, Duisburg, Pforzheim, Neuss, Chemnitz, Kassel, Essen, Dortmund, Misburg, Nordhausen, Kiel, Plauen, Heligoland, Bremen, Walkenburg, The Hague, Rotterdam and Pomigliano. His pilot on operations were Flight Lieutenant Harswicke and Squadron Leader Morhen.
