Robert McClements was born on 6 December 1924, in Belfast. He left school at the age of 14 and worked various jobs to help support his family. While there was no conscription in Northern Ireland, in late 1943 while working at the Harland and Wolff shipyard he volunteered to join the RAF, as aircrew.
Following basic training at RAF Bridlington and then initial gunnery training at RAF Bridgnorth, he was posted to RAF Pembry to join No 1 AGS and train as an air gunner. Air gunners course · IBCC Digital Archive (lincoln.ac.uk)
He completed the gunnery course in February 1944 and was posted to No 20 OTU at RAF Lossiemouth and then on to 1658 HCU, at RAF Ricall, to train on Halifax aircraft. In July 1944, with all training finally completed, he began his operational flying with 10 Squadron at RAF Melbourne flying Halifax aircraft.
His early operational trips passed without incident, but on one operation the aircraft experienced heavy icing, causing it to lose all lift and go into an uncontrolled descent. With the aircraft going straight down the order to ‘Bale out’ was given, Robert managed to get out of his gunner position, but then found himself forced to the floor unable to move. In the cockpit, the pilot engaged full power and he and his engineer battled with the control column to pull the aircraft out of its dive. The flight home passed uneventfully although the engineer reported that the aircraft never ever flew again.
Throughout the rest of his tour there were other eventful sorties. On one, two of the bombs ‘hung up’ and they had to release them from the carrier units using an axe. On another, the bomb aimer forgot to press the bomb-release button so they had to go around again. Luck was again on his side when, on a night raid, another aircraft on a turning point swung across the top of his Halifax, narrowly missing the top of his gun turret. Robert went on to complete a full operational flying tour of 38 operational sorties over Belgium, France and Germany amassing over 200 flying hours. PMcClementsR1503.2.jpg (1600×1299) (lincoln.ac.uk)
After his operational tour, Robert was released from flying duties. He remained at RAF Melbourne and trained as a Unit Fire Officer and he and his flight engineer took charge of the station warrant officer’s office. During a routine site inspection, he met a German prisoner of war who was making a wooden model of a Catalina aircraft for the officers’ mess. Robert asked him to make a model of his Halifax aircraft for him. The aircraft, remarkable in its detail, has been a treasured memento of his time served in the RAF. Robert McClements and his model of Halifax ZA-V · IBCC Digital Archive (lincoln.ac.uk)
Robert met his future wife, Iris, on a visit to the Observer Corp HQ at York where she was a serving member. He left the RAF in 1947 having attained the rank of Temporary Warrant Officer. He and Iris settled in England where they worked with her father, in York. Latterly, he and Iris set up their own business in Wakefield selling motor vehicles.
Chris Cann
Iris McClements (nee Dobson) remembers, at the age of 11, being issued with a gas mask before the war had started. When she was about 13 years of age, her family moved to Eldwick to avoid the bombs.
She was a member of the Home Guard before joining the Women’s Junior Air Corp where she attained the rank of sergeant. She recalled wearing a grey uniform, being issued with a bucket, stirrup pump and helmet for fire watching and learning the theory of the internal combustion engine.
In 1944, she passed the entrance exam to join the Royal Observer Corps and was based in York, as a plotter. Her role was to listen to information from the spotters via headphones and place it on to the plotting table. This included the number of aircraft, direction of travel, height, and whether they were friendly or hostile. This was to give warning of enemy operations or to track operations heading to Germany. She worked eight-hour shifts which changed each week. The spotters in the outposts were also watching for aircraft that were going to crash-land, so that the crash sites could be identified. Iris visited a couple of these sites. She met her husband to be, Robert, on one of his visits to the Royal Observer Corp HQ in York.
She lived on an ex-World War One motor launch in York that the family had used for recreation. When off duty she would often travel into York to go dancing, swimming and to the cinema.
After the war she and Robert worked with her father in the motor trade. She then set up business with Robert in Wakefield.

3rd December, 1944
Dear Corporal,
Hurrah and hooroo! Or words to that effect, anyway. But one thing I would ask of you: when you are a lady chiefie, don’t push the blokes around [underlined] too [/underlined] much. I have yet to see one of your colleagues out here, although I have spoken to one of your officers – on the phone, alas. You may be interested to know that a Waaf officers’ training unit exists on this continent – a long, long way from here. A number of snappy-looking items in Waaf uniform hail from Palestine. There I go again – wandering right off the mark. You will be a W.O. a long time before I get my third. Pour moi, my future is well behind me, for I am not employed in my service trade, and that is fatal to progress. However, I am relatively easy about it; my job up here is infinitely preferable to that of a sergeant W/M.
No question of home leave yet, Corp. I’ll have to spend another two years or so before I become eligible for it; and eligibility is no guarantee of getting leave, anyway.
This locality is no longer a haven of refuge from the feminine gender. The invasion has commenced in a large manner, but the vast majority of them are very unalluring. Of course, there are exceptions, but they are few. French and Arab. No, the latter do not wear veils! They are referred to as Arab, but are actually Kabyle, and do not veil themselves. In a large and most un-Naafilike Naafi in town, tea and wads (and ice-cream!) are slung at one by French girls garbed in the inevitable blue overalls. They have a working knowledge of such terms as “giss a wad” and “tub”
[page break]
o’ swill, gal”.
One rather elegant youth up here is very diffident and self-conscious in the presence of the unfair sex. Well, one day last week a rather nice-looking though not so young French dame came in to make an enquiry about something or other of no importance; but she had to wait in the office while the gen came through. My rather elegant youth was trying to struggle with a sheet of figures, but I could see that all was not well with him. So I whispered in his ear, “I am aware that there is a disturbing influence in the room”. There came into his eyes a look of deep gratitude; I felt as though I had given a swig of water to a wounded man. “For once you’re right”, he replied. But he was U/S for the rest of the day.
That hardy annual “Journey’s End” was performed by a R.A.F. company this week end. A brother of the late Leslie Howard is a few miles from here (in the airworks) and conducts a dramatic society. A couple of weeks ago there was a veritable music festival in the Station theatre (officially known as the Tivoli). It lasted about four hours, and was broadcast over the (sic) Tannoy.
The Naafi in this camp is pretty grim; it is still in the u/t stage. A Corporals’ room is under way and may (R) may ease the congestion. But the huts our [sic] remarkably good; the reason being that our new domicile is a redundant hospital. The one real snag about the huts is lack of proper heating; even in Africa the evenings can be quite chilly, and two oil stoves are not sufficient. Incidentally, since coming out here I have never seen a piece of coal or smelt a whiff of gas. All lighting is done by electricity (or oil) and all firing on any but the smallest scale is done with wood.
[page break]
It is quite difficult to believe that one is only a few miles from one of the largest towns in North Africa. In Britain it is the practice for gas, water and drainage systems to extend for umpteen miles from their source. But not here. Once you are out of town you are lucky to have electric light. Of telephones – the less one says about or into them, the better. Smoke signals or tomtoms would be far [deleted] better [/deleted] quicker and more reliable.
Well, that’s the line as shot by
Yours sincerely,
[signature]
God bless!

Seemed to be a very good prang bit what I saw of it.
Attacked by a JU88 but we evaded okay.

The most intense heavy predicted flak we have ever seen.
Every one of the engines hit. So many holes in kite that we couldn’t count them. Me and bomb aimer in the nose when nose was hit. Piece of flack hit him and went in his shoulder he is now in hospital. Gee what a feeling when that lump hit us.
We now have some respect for Jerries gunners.

12th Oct 1944. Day.
Wanneikel (Rhur.)
Worst trip we have had.
Not much flak but deadly accurate and we seemed to be the target all the time.
We were it on the way to the target but no extensive damage was done then we were hit on the bombing run. After bombing we were hit and the port inner started to smoke after it was feathered the starboard inner packed up and we found we couldn’t feather it.
The starboard outer had a bad oil leak and the temp went up to 130. With only two engines running we lost height down to 4500 and coming back away from the target they let us have it again this time hitting

the oxygen supply lines.
We tried to get a landing field in Belgium and France but it was no good and we knew we should have to get it back to England. So we went south down France and across where the channel was the narrowest and obtained permission to land at Manston their emergency run way. With a deadly cross wind we got the undercart down with emergency air and managed to feather the starb inner engine. Then to finish things off in a fine style we found the starb wheel was flat. Well, on landing we swung over to starboard and ripped off one of the wheels. Then the kite caught fire and boy I reckon no one ever got out of a kite so quick as us. So after all the trouble we had, we had the pleasure of seeing the kite burn after one of the tanks had exploded and I guess that was the end of Apple.
But it was pretty hot and we didnt [sic] feel safe until we had two feet firmly on the floor.
Well thats [sic] the third time we have been shot up over the happy valley and believe me the Rhur is no picnic at night so in daylight as can be guessed it’s pretty grim.
Gee it was a close one.

Another Rhur trip but much more pleasant.
Flak didn’t hinder us at all got quite a real good bombing run and the target was well ablaze before I bombed.
Was the biggest show put on by Bomber Command in daylight over 1,000 bombers took part.
This was why the flak didn’t bother us very much.
No enemy fighters. We had 16 squadrons of fighters escorting us.
Very good trip it lasted 3 hrs 35 mins.
We carried incendries.

Recollections of the navigator of one of the Lancasters which took part in the attack of Dresden on 13th/14th February 1945.
One of the Lancasters which bombed Dresden was “P” Peter which was one of the fifteen aircraft from 153 Squadron which was based at Scampton, Lincolnshire.
The crew of “P” Peter was made up of a South African, Donald Legg who was the pilot, a Canadian Russell Rawlings, the wireless operator, a Welshman from Liverpool, Dave Jones, who was the bomb aimer, an Englishman Andy Andrews, the upper gunner and three
[page break]
2.
Scots, Ian Henderson, the navigator Jack Ross the flight engineer and Jock Beat the rear gunner.
Donald Legg, the South African was 32 and much older than the other members of the crew who were in their early twenties.
The Lancaster “P” Peter was the second one of that name which this crew had had. Their first one had been destroyed a few weeks earlier when after a bombing operation on the Urft dam the first “P” Peter had been hit by flak which had started a fire in the port engine. The fire could not be extinguished but the pilot had been able to fly as far as Brussells [sic] and to land there. Brussells [sic] was at that time in the hands of the Allies.
[page break]
3.
At the briefing before the operation the crews were advised that the target was to be Dresden and that the Russians had particularly asked that the RAF carry out the attack to help them. The Russians had believed that there was a build up of German troops and armour in Dresden preparing to make a counter attack on them.
To the crews involved it was simply another operation, the principal difference between it and the others being that it was for a longer distance than the average operation and that they would be under possible attack from enemy fighters and flak for a longer period of time.
[page break]
4.
There was a strong wind from the west blowing when “P” Peter took off at 21.22 pm.
After climbing to 10,000 feet it joined the main bomber force at Reading and then headed south east on a course of 148° crossing the English coast near Eastbourne and the French coast near Abbeyville. It then altered course to 109° until 0053 am when at a point 20 miles from Darmstadt it altered course to 086° and flew on it for 14 minutes for about 65 miles heading in the direction of Nurnberg. It then altered course again to 081° and flew towards a point to the north of Nurnberg.
[page break]
5.
At 0107 am it altered course to 045° and flew towards Leipzig. When about 35 miles south of Leipzig it made its last change of course to 082° direct to Dresden which it reached at 0138.
It had now flown 843 miles in 4 hours and 16 minutes and was at a height of 18000 feet. The temperature was minus 23c. and the speed of the wind was 82 miles per hour.
The bomb aimer Dave Jones then directed the pilot to the target which was a factory on the south bank of the Elbe and released the bomb load accurately on the target at 1.40 am.
[page break]
6.
Immediately after the bombs were released the navigator gave the pilot a new couse [sic] to fly south east from Dresden for 14 miles. At 146 am the pilot was asked to change his course to 243° ie to the south west and to fly to a point 25 miles south of Chemnitz (which incidentally the crew returned to on another operation the following night) After flying 62 miles on this course the aircraft again changed course to 226° and flew to a point about 20 miles south east of Nurnberg “P” Peter then flew the next 111 miles on a course of 248° to a point about 20 miles south of Stuttgart which it reached at 3.28 am.
[page break]
7.
At that point the navigator asked the pilot to change course to 268° and to fly on that course for 110 miles to a point 25 miles south of Strasbourg which was reached at 4.13 am.
“P” Peter was still flying at 18,000 feet into a westerly head wind which had increased to 90 mph. The pilot then realised that there was not enough petrol in the tanks to get home if the last dog leg on the flight plan was followed and that it was essential to fly on a straight course back to Scampton. He therefore asked the navigator to work out a new course direct to Base and was given a course of 305%[sic]. He reduced height from 18,000 feet
[page break]
8.
to 10,000 feet at which height the speed of the wind fell from 90 mph to 45 mph. At the lower height the temperature rose from minus 23c to minus 8c.
There were still 460 miles to fly to base.
“P” Peter crossed the French coast near Dunkirk at 6.21 am and reached Scampton at 7.36 am with its fuel tanks almost empty.
Due to diversionary tactics which confused the Germans no enemy fighters were encountered on this operation but this was very exceptional and there had been no sign of the Luftwaffe being any less strong or active previous to or after the Dresden operation. In the previous week “P” Peter had taken part in a raid of Politz near Stellin and had being [sic] damaged after being hit in the port
[page break]

engine. On the following night, the 14th of February “P” Peter and its crew were detailed to fly on another long flight to Chemnitz which was 35 miles west of Dresden when the aircraft was hit 5 times.
Most of the Dresden crews were given time to rest after the long Dresden flight and the writer cannot remember why his crew were asked to fly on two very long flights on two nights running.
In the following week on 21st February when “P” Peter and its crew took part in a raid on Duisburg the flight engineer Jack Ross counted 5 Lancasters going down in flames after being hit by enemy fighters or anti aircraft fire.
[page break]
10.
The personal views of the navigator about the attack on Dresden are that at the time it was just one other operation which was intended to give assistance to the Russian allies and be a further step in defeating the enemy which had still a powerful war machine in operation and was quite capable of carrying on the war long enough to develop and use the more powerful weapons which they were working on namely guided rockets and the atom bomb.
He firmly believes that the devastating destruction caused to Dresden, which was contributed to by an exceptionally strong wind that night, was such a psychological blow to the Germans that it resulted in the war ending
[page break]
11.
many months earlier than it would otherwise have done and so saved probably hundreds of thousands of lives of death camp prisoners, British and American servicemen and British civilians.
At this stage of the war Germany still occupied much of Europe including Yugoslavia, Greece and the Channel Islands. Jews were still being murdered and the gas chambers were still operating in the concentration camps.
The Germans had developed a new weapon, the V2, and were attacking London with these rockets.
There was no clear indication of when the war which was in its fifth year would end.
The orders to bomber crews were to hit only military targets and this they endeavoured to do despite the heavy enemy defences.
“P” Peter seldom returned from raids over Germany with scaring.

Dear mum & dad,
Hello again here's just a few lines to let you know you're not forgotten.
I arrived back alright and am now back in the swim again waiting for something to happen; that's the trouble with this place we hang around for ages and get fed-up, I'd much sooner do one trip a day and get finished than do one a month. Here I am grumbling again, still they say a soldier's never happy unless he has something to grumble about.
I see one lot of chaps have

already come home for Xmas from Italy, I don't suppose there's any sign of our big lad yest is there? it sure would be grand if he could be here too.
I sent two photo’s to Vera of our crew as we arrived back from the 'Tirpitz' do, the film was scratched and the light was poor but it's us anyway, she'll be bringing you one down when she comes home this week.
Derek doesn't seem to be very settled at nights now unless he's in with Vera of course then he's no bother at all, he seems to be scared

of being left on his own, but maybe he'll grow out of it.
I got a suprise [sic] today, my Second Class Navigator's certificate arrived this morning; I've been qualified for it these last eighteen months but they must have missed me somehow. I couldn't get a First Class because to qualify for that we have to do a six month's course and there havn't [sic] been any vacancies for months. However it isn't everybody that has even a Second Class certificate so it's some appreciation of our work to get one, there's no extra money in it but it would certainly useful if I wanted to

Well there doesn't seem anything special to write about so I'll close for now and write later on.
Keep well and look after yourselves, has David filled his stamp album yet?
Good-night and God Bless.
Your Loving Son.

3rd Dec. ’44.
Dear Mum, Dad & Fmly, [sic] I did not expect to be writing to you from Stalag IVB a few months back. I though [sic] I would be experiencing more congenial surroundings, perhaps sitting with you by the fireside at the particular moment. However I was wrong, & perhaps the extra few months waiting here may turn out to be the best in the long run, for our post war lives. Being December I suppose everyone should be preparing for Christmas, I don’t know quite how it affects us here. I should imagine that the entertainments have something in production. Last year from what I can gather was pretty good all round, it seems different somehow now because of the war situation, there’s a different atmosphere, one of expectation so to speak, and this tends to make us more complacent about preparing for such events as Christmas. Of course you all know, the biggest Christmas present we could have. I expect you all are looking forward to the 25th, plenty of Turkey, refreshment etc. I remember last year very vividly it will provide me with plenty of food for thought, for this year. Well there’s little news really, I’ve received two old letters July & Aug, from Twins Harold & Maisie. Lectures are still given in evenings, some are quite interesting. We have a new show which I see this week “Springtime for Jennifer” I understand it is very good indeed. It’s a musical comedy written entirely by prisoners of war, it has several scenes admirably constructed. Can you tell me how my position stands after war for Civil Flying, if this is not practicable, my position with Unilever. I may be able to study something. Do you hear from Pat still she seems busy. Cheerio now love, Reg.
