250 items. The collection concerns Pilot Officer Hedley Madgett DFM (1922 - 1943, 147519, 1330340 Royal Air Force), a pilot with 61 Squadron. He was killed 18 August 1943 on the last operation of his tour from RAF Syerston to Peenemünde. The collection consists of letters, postcards and telegrams to his parents while he was training in the United Kingdom and Canada. In addition the collection contains memorabilia, documents from the Air Training Corps, artwork, a railway map, diaries, medals as well as his logbook, photographs of people, places and aircraft. I have the honour to inform you that your attendance is requested at Buckingham Palace at 10.15 o’clock a.m. on Tuesday, the 5th December, 1944, in order that you, as next of kin, may receive from the King the Distinguished Flying Medal awarded to your son, the late Pilot Officer Hedley R. Madgett, Royal Air Force.
DRESS: Service Dress, Civil Defence Uniform, Morning Dress or dark Lounge Suit.

Also includes post-war duties with Transport Command. He was stationed at RAF Desford (7 EFTS), RCAF Neepawa (35 EFTS), RCAF Weyburn (41 SFTS), RCAF Charlottetown (31 GRS), RAF Dalcross (19(P) AFU), RAF Perton (21(P) AFU), RAF Desborugh (84 OTU), RAF Chedburgh (1653 Heavy Conversion Unit), RAF Feltwell (3 LFS), RAF Mepal (75(NZ)) Squadron, RAF Lossiemouth (20 OTU), RAF Lulsgate Bottom (No 3 FIS), RAF Lyneham (246 and 511 Squadrons), RAF Holmsley (246 Squadron) and RAF Filton (12 Reserve Flying School). Aircraft in which flown: Tiger Moth, DH82C, Harvard, Anson I, Oxford, Wellington III, Wellington X, Stirling III, Lancaster Mk I, Lancaster Mk 3, Lancaster X, York C1. He flew a total of 35 operations (12 night, 23 day) with 75(NZ) Squadron Bomber Command RAF on the following targets in France, Germany and the Netherlands: Bonn, Calais, Cologne, Dortmund, Duisburg, Eindhoven, Emmerich, Essen, Flushing, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamm, Homberg, Kattegat, Koblenz, Le Havre, Leuna (Merseberg), Oberhausen, Osterfeld, Pont-Remy, Saarbrucken, Solingen, Stettin, Stuttgart and Westkapelle Dyke. <span>He flew as a second pilot on operations with </span>Flight Lieutenant Washer.

92 items. An oral history interview with Warrant Officer Richard Curnock (1924, 1915605 Royal Air Force), his log book, letters, photographs and prisoner of war magazines. He flew operations with 425 Squadron before being shot down and becoming a prisoner of war.

Am writing this letter to tell you I have sent you another parcel yesterday which I hope you will get it is my "Next of Kin" one. Also I want you if Wes doesnt [sic] already know it his F/O has come through and Gordon has taken the good news back home with him. We haven't heard if yours has come through at all but you were put for a com as well as Wesley the very [blank] night you were missing did you know that bit of news. Mary has just being [sic] played [indecipherable word] with Dad she can play quite well now she still likes school. Had a nice Card and letter from Chucks [sic] Mother yesterday. Aunt [indecipherable word] has sent many a dolls [?] bedstead to put away for her Xmas. She sends her love to you. An account of the resource
59 items. The collection concerns the wartime career of Flight Sergeant Herbert Frederick O'Hara (1917 – 1968, 655736, 195482 Royal Air Force). Herbert O'Hara served on 12 Squadron at RAF Wickenby between February and May 1944. His aircraft was shot down over France in May 1944 and he evaded until he was liberated in September 1944. He was then commissioned. The collection contains service records and two logbooks, notification of him missing as well as correspondence from and photographs of French people who helped him evade. In addition there is an account of travelling across the Atlantic for flying training in Florida as well as notes from his aircrew officers course at RAF Credenhill. Finally there are a number of target and reconnaissance photographs and six paintings.
The collection has been loaned to the IBCC Digital Archive for digitisation by Brian O'Hara and catalogued by Nigel Huckins and IBCC staff.
