Description
An account of the resource
56 items. The collection concerns Major Ernest Gordon Appleford Lett, DSO (1910-1989, 50112), a British Army officer and partisan leader in Italy. He was taken prisoner after the fall of Tobruk and detained in different camps in Italy. After the September 1943 armistice, rather than re-joining Allied forces, he took to the mountains and established contacts with Resistance forces active in the Apennines between Liguria and Toscana. Lett founded and led the Battaglione Internazionale, a multinational unit that successfully engaged Black Brigades and German units. Later, when reliable lines of communication were secured, supplies were dropped by air and the Battaglione was supplemented by Special Operations Executive personnel. Gordon Lett was relieved by Major John Henderson in March 1945. After the war, Lett was awarded the DSO and received the Medaglia Argento al valor militare.
The collection consists of a selection of Gordon Lett's papers and official correspondence with key figures of the local Resistance movement. They include Colonnello Mario Fontana (‘Cossu’, or ‘Turchi’), Comandante Luciano Scotti (‘Vittorio’ or ‘Gonzaga’), Commissario Politico Anselmo Corsini ('Ambrosio', or ‘Max’) and Mario Fortelli, a lawyer acting as liaison officer with the local Allied Military Mission.
Documents consist of military assessments, notes on air drops, a ciphers book, a draft of a radio message sent via clandestine radio operators, and a request for tactical bombing. The collection contains notes on an aircraft crash, the military funeral and the subsequent burial of the aircrew. A specific subset includes correspondence, plans and reports about the construction of an improvised landing strip for Allied aircraft operating behind enemy lines.
All documents were deposited at the La Spezia City Council and then re-housed in 1972 at the Istituto spezzino per la Storia della Resistenza e dell’Età Contemporanea, where they have been preserved ever since. The selection published here has been curated by Tiziano Vernazza.

Warrant Officer Harold Kirby 1637087 was born in Kilbourne, Loncon in 1923, his job after leaving school was in the accounting department at London Electric Supplies. He initially tried to volunteer for the RAF but failed the medical, at that time. He was subsequently drafted in 1942. Skill training started with training as a Flight Mechanic, but during this was asked to volunteer to rain as a Flight Engineer. His first posting was as an Aircraft Fitter at No.460 Squadron, RAF Binbrook, although only for 6 months.
After Flight Engineer training at St Athan and then training on the Short Stirling and then the Lancaster with 1661 Heavy Conversion Unit at RAF Winthorpe, the first solo flight for the crew, the port landing gear would not lock, during the landing the gear collapsed, although there were no injuries.
First operational unit was No.467 Squadron at RAF Waddington a mainly Australian Squadron, the crew were here for July and August 1944, One operation 3/4th August 1944, to the V1 storage site at Trossy Saint Maximin had another bomber flying above their aircraft and dropping their bombs, one going through the wing, narrowly missing vital structures, this resulted in a gear up landing, due to hydraulic loss, but again there were no injuries resulting.
He was then posted along with the crew to No 97 Squadron, based at RAF Coningsby a pathfinder squadron, tasked to mark the targets for other aircraft,
In total two tours were completed before the end of the European war, after finishing as a Flight Engineer, Harold trained as a RADAR mechanic, before leaving the RAF.

[underlined] DO POLAKOW W NIEMCZECH [/underlined]
Podajemy poniżej, tłomaczenie [sic] oficjalnego ostrzeżenia nadanego przez Generała Dwight D. Eisenhower’a. Naczelnego Dowódcę Wojsk Sprzymierzonych i skierowanego do wszystkich Niemców.
Wprowadżcie sie czyn instrukcje które Was w ten sposób dosięgną. Wystrzegajcie się prowokatorów. Zanotujcie nazwiska tych Niemców, ktorzy pomimo tego uroczystego ostrzeżenia, będą starali się Wam i Waszym współtowarzyszom szkodzić w jakikolwiek sposób.

translation:
TO POLES IN GERMANY
We give you below in translation the official warning given by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Commander in Chief of the Allied Forces, and directed at all Germans.
“Amongst you there are large numbers of people incorporated into forced labour battalions, or imprisoned in concentration camps. Without regard for their nationality or faith. Germans! Do not listen to orders from whatever source to torment or harm these people. Allied forces are now in a strong position on German soil – as they move advance.
We expect to find these people alive and whole. Severe punishments will be meted out against those people responsible directly or indirectly and in whatever belief, for the harm caused to them. May those who are in authority today – Remember this!”
The warning of the Commander in Chief is, as you see, firm. Germans – regardless of their rank or standing – are forewarned of the punishment that awaits them if they persecute or harm you in whatever way.
The Commander in Chief – as any other soldier of the Allied Forces – is thinking of you, as the final assault on Germany approaches. You must gather together with your countrymen as well as with other exiles from Allied countries, and organise yourselves for action. Listen to London’s BBC radio, and other broadcasts from the Allies: gather and distribute flyers from the Allies. Put into action the instructions you read in them. Beware of provocateurs. Note the names of these Germans who despite the ceremonial warning will try to harm you and your comrades in any way possible.

Dear Mum,
Not a lot to write about again this time. The weathers been very cool & windy the past few days – not much effort to stay in camp & go to bed early. Had a couple more ops in, have twelve to finish now. Scottie Gall finished his tour a couple of nights ago which we found a good excuse to spend a night on the beer down at the local pub – nearly all the navigators were there as well as Scotties crew. The old Bushie from Tooraweenah was there too making up the trio from the district out home. Bushie’s crew are in the same room as us & although they arrived here a week before us we’ve had the same number of ops. done & there’s great rivalry to see who gets the lead – we had one on them for a few weeks but they got even a few days ago & look like staying that way now for a while. Bert Howard’s crew were shot down over there a few nights ago – bad luck. They may have parachuted safely but it seems a bit doubtful from what we’ve heard. He was going to marry a girl from Newcastle on his next leave which was due in a fortnight. Betty told you I suppose that his girl at Dulwich Hill walked out on him and married a Yank a couple of months ago. Betty told me you got the cushion cover OK. Gosh I’d been carting that around a while – really been places. Glad the wool turned out OK. Bad luck for Alwin with his lambs though wasn’t it. Cheerio. Love to all at home Bert XXXX
