Navigator’s, air bomber’s and air gunner’s flying log book for P F Andrews, wireless operator/air gunner, covering the period from 16 August 1943 to 13 December 1945. Detailing his flying training, operations flown and post war flying. It also gives details of being shot down and baling out over Denmark and landing on Zeeland and becoming a prisoner of war and being liberated by the Americans at Moosburg, Germany. He was stationed at RAF Yatesbury, RAF Barrow, RAF Lossiemouth, RAF Rufforth, RAF Melbourne and RAF Upavon. Aircraft flown in were, Dominie, Proctor, Anson, Wellington, Halifax and Oxford. He flew a total of 19 operations with 10 Squadron; 3 daylight and 16 night-time operations, before being shot down on his 19th operation. Targets were, Essen, Cologne, Gelsenkirchen, Munster, Sterkrade, Duisburg, Hagen, Osnabruck, Bingen, Hannover and Bohlen. His pilot on operations was Flying Officer Grayshan. This item was sent to the IBCC Digital Archive already in digital form: no better quality copies are available.

Cheshire served on 102 and 35 Squadrons and commanded 76 and 617 Squadrons. The collection includes details of 617 Squadron's precision bombing operations. Also included are two sub-collections: one containing 21 photographs of Tinian and Saipan, the other consisting of 37 audio tapes of speeches given by Cheshire after the war.

The collection covers the career of Flight Sergeant Derrick John Allen (1880966 Royal Air Force) who was a mid-upper gunner on 467 Royal Australian Air Force Squadron at RAF Waddington in 1944-45. Collection contains his logbook, Royal Air Force documentation, notes on air gunners course and photographs of various aircrew. Collection also contains maps and photographs covering the loss of his Lancaster near Spa in Belgium from which he successfully bailed out on 2 November 1944. There is also an oral history interview with his family.
The collection has been loaned to the IBCC Digital Archive for digitisation by Judy Hodgson and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

Navigator’s, air bomber’s, air gunner’s and flight engineer’s flying log book for Flight Sergeant Derrick Allen air gunner, covering the period from 11 February 1944 to 25 April 1945. Detailing training and operations flown. He was stationed at London, RAF Bridlington, RAF Bridgnorth, RAF Pembrey, RAF Silverstone, RAF Wigsley, RAF Syerston, RAF Waddington, RAF Strubby, RAF Blyton, RAF Cardington, RAF St. Athan and RAF Spanhoe. Aircraft flown were, Anson, Wellington, Stirling, Lancaster and C-47. He flew a total of 19 operations with 467 Squadron, 6 daylight and 13 night, his aircraft was shot down on his ninth operation to Dusseldorf, when Pilot and Rear Gunner were killed, he abandoned aircraft. Targets were, Kaiserslautern, Wilhelmshaven, Bremen, Walcheren, Brunswick, Homberg, Dusseldorf, Ladbergen, Politz, Dresden, Chemnitz, Dortmund-Emms Canal, Sassnitz, Harburg, Essen, Komotau and Tonsberg. His pilots on operations were pilot Officer Landridge, Flight Lieutenant Evans and Flying Officer Rodinson.

His targets were Genoa, Hamburg, Turin, Mannheim, Nienburg, Duisburg, Gironde River, Essen, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Lorient, Milan, Wilhelmshaven, Nurnberg, St. Nazaire, Stuttgart, Gdynia, Rostock. With 408 Squadron he flew 20 operations (5 day and 15 night). His pilot was F/O Wylie. His targets were Cologne, Oberhausen, Dusseldorf, Bochum, Gelsenkirchen, Julich, Munster, Duisburg, Hagen, Karlsruhe, Soest, Osnabruck, Opladen, Troisdorf, Hanover, Saarbrucken, Grevenbroich. Last entry is a log of a flight in Concorde in 1983.

He volunteered for aircrew as air gunner and completed operations on 149, 218 and 75 NZ Squadrons on Lancaster and Stirling in 1944/45 and stayed in the RAF after the war. The collection contains his log book, documents, photographs and decorations.

30 Oct. Cologne. Night cloud from French coast to target. Flak moderate but accurate. Fighter planes dropped close to R/C. Saw kite go down in flames. Fog at base on return & we just avoided a collision

16 Nov 1944 Duren. Daylight Hazy over target so ordered down to 1000ft by Master Bomber. In first wave flak light but predicted & accurate. Master Bomber congratulated bombing results over R/T. Jerry was firing scarecrows to panic us. Saw kite with one engine in flames leave for home 2.30 & base thought we had done abortive & returned early.
18 Nov. Wanne-Eikel. Night target Big oil tanks. Flak barrage over target & predicted on way [inserted] in & [/inserted] out. Searchlights galore but cloud over good. Target blazing when we left. On way home saw V1 coned by searchlights N. of us & being bashed by flak. Landed at Yankee dome as weather bad over base.

29 Nov. Dortmund. Daylight Flight Stream with fighter escort on way in target. Saw trail of V2 Rocket just launched. Seemed strange that it would arrive in England in a few minutes. Flak all the way on route & heavy over target. Wherever you looked there was flak. Raced Johnny White back at 300 IAS at one time Xray missing. Saw fellow bale out [indecipherable word] Dam.
3 Dec Just over German border had overspending prop. SC1 Feathering no good and oil started to pour out. Fire broke out which was extinguished

13 Feb Dresden. Night. over 2000 miles to help Stalin. Flak over target moderate H.F. Town ablaze from end to end & could see flames 100 miles away on homeward journey. Saw battle raging on both Eastern & Western fronts. Flew over Czecho.slovakia [sic] & Switzerland on way home & arrived at base with very little petrol left. (23 trip)
14 Feb. Chemitz. [sic] Night SW of Berlin. Predicted by flak before we reached target. Heard it burst & we were hit in port tail plane. Slaw [sic] glow of fires on cloud. Airborne 9 1/4hrs Hit 5 times.

J Flint’s pilot’s flying log book covering the period from 17 March 1944 to 23 October 1945. Detailing his flying training and operations flown as pilot. He was stationed at RAF Bruntingthorpe (29 OTU), RAF Swinderby (1660 HCU), RAF Syerston (5 LFS), and RAF Skellingthorpe (50 Squadron). Aircraft flown in were Wellington, Stirling and Lancaster. Targets were not specified. He flew thirteen operations with 50 Squadron plus one Operation Exodus, one Operation Dodge and a trooping flight to Berlin. His pilot for a ‘second dickie’ operation was Flight Lieutenant Milne.

Pilot’s flying log book for J Vasey covering the period from 20 July 1942 to 28 April 1946. Detailing his flying training and operations flown as pilot. He was stationed at RAF Cambridge (22 EFTS) RCAF Neepawa (35 EFTS), RCAF Weyburn (41 SFTS), RAF Shellingford (3 EFTS), RAF Church Lawford (18 PAFU), RAF Fiskerton (1514 BAT Flight), RAF Silverstone (17 OTU), RAF Swinderby (1654 HCU), RAF East Kirkby (57 Squadron), RAF Syerston (5 LFS), RAF Finningley (BCIS), RAF Wigsley (1654 HCU), RAF Welford (1336 TSCU), RAF Palam (353 Squadron), RAF Meiktelia (10 Squadron). He had two Red Endorsements. Aircraft flown in were Tiger Moth, Anson, Oxford, Wellington, Halifax, Lancaster and Dakota.
He flew a total of 30 operations with 57 Squadron (24 by night and six by day), targets were Darmstadt, Koningsberg, Bergoneuse, Stuttgart, Bremerhaven, Rheydt, Munster, Karlsruhe, Kaiserlauten, Bremen, Brunswick, Nuremburg, Dusseldorf, Dortmund-Ems Canal, Hamburg, Gravenhorst, Trondheim, Munich, Heinbach dam, Oslo, Royan, Leuna, Siegen, Cologne, Wilhelmshaven, Veerk, Homburg, Duren and Ladbergen. His pilot for his first 'second dickie' operation was Squadron Leader Fairburn. After December 1944 he instructed and then flew transport operations in the Far East.

Items include photographs of aircraft and people, a letter concerning his Distinguished Flying Cross and well as newspaper cuttings concerning operations, his wedding and the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross. After training he completed tours on 625 Squadron at RAF Kelstern, then 170 Squadron at RAF Hemswell before going on to a bomber defence training flight flying Hurricanes and Spitfires.

The collection concerns John Dent (b. 1924, 2206473 Royal Air Force) who flew as a flight engineer on Lancaster of 44 Squadron in late 1944 early 1945.
