Translated from the original in German: Present is the window cleaner Otto Pfromm, born 3 November 1879, formerly of Fliegengasse 17, and his daughter, Mrs Katharina Sch., née Pfromm, born 19 February 1907, and make the following statement:
We are looking for the daughter Hildegard Sch., born 12 May 1928.
Our Hildegard was doing her mandatory year of service at Holzmarkt. She came home (Klosterstraße 6) from work, it was just before eight. She said to me: “Mum, I would first like to go and see my friend.” (Hedwig Böhmer, died too, of Wildemannsgasse 11) Since then, I have not seen anything of my daughter. Then the alarm came. So I took my other children, Heinrich, Klara and Wilhelm, and went to the shelter in Fliegengasse. Grandpa was a troop leader in that shelter. I shouted: “We must have peace and quiet in here!” Because as you know, during such a raid, you can imagine how it is when there are women and children. After the raid the shelter leader ordered: “Everyone vacate the building!” So people all left about half nine.
We all made our way along the Fulda, went up at the Schlagd to the Rondell. That’s where we stood, the three children with us, until the next morning. We did not see a woman with someone else’s child on her arm. There were so many people that you could not pay attention to them all. The Courts of Justice and the Renthof were ablaze. The fire engine von Münden at the land registry office was pumping water from the Fulda and directed it at the land registry. About seven in the morning we walked to Friedrichsplatz. We passed the Courts on the left and went up where the theatre is. Here, on Friedrichsplatz, lay the dead and the wounded and doctors were there to bandage those who were injured. Ambulances came and took people away, in all directions. A truck took us to Oberzwehren. It was good there, we immediately got something decent to eat. Vegetables with noodles, it was top quality. The National Socialist Welfare Organisation treated us well. My face was black with soot. Then we were taken to Guxhagen and from there by train to Bebra. Now we loge in Iba with farmer Knierim (no 143). We are very comfortable there. The people there treat us well.
Then we went to the missing persons department in the town hall and inquired after the Böhmers. That’s where we heard that the Böhmers were in Oberkaufungen. And when we got there, we were told: “They are now in Witzenhausen.” So were travelled to Witzenhausen to get news of our Hildegard. (Her father was killed in action two years ago in Russia.) We spoke with Mr Böhmer himself. He told us: “I saw that everything was on fire. The air raid warden said: ‘If you go out, you do so at your own risk.’ I said: ‘Out, now!’ I had taken three children with me and my wife and your Hildegard. We went through Hinter der Waage because there was no fire yet. That was shortly after the raid. But when I turned round, the two friends had disappeared, Hildegard and my daughter Hedwig.” He then went with the others across the Fulda Bridge, along Bettenhäuser Straße, past the prison to Hafenstraße. “Here we were put on vehicles and taken to Oberkaufungen. I suffered burns on my hands and ears when I pulled the girls from the burning house (Wildemannsgasse 11). I saw the two girls for the last time Hinter der Waage.”
Our Hildegard knew that we always went to the shelter. Mrs Hedwig Böhmer, the grandmother of the Hedwig who was killed, knows a woman from the old town (they share a billet in Ronshausen no 19). This woman, whom we did not know, we met on the train this morning. She told us: “I know both of the missing girls. Hedwig had shouted ‘Daddy’ and ‘Mum’.” Her father claims to have heard that. A boy, whose name we don’t know, claims to have seen our Hildegard alone on Königstraße, on the upper part. Another woman, Mrs Dornermann, formerly from the Junkers plant, told us that she had seen our little Hildegard lying unconscious on a stretcher. That was on the sports ground. From that point on we have no trace of her.
We believe the following: Our Hildegard was looking for us. When she did not find us, she wandered around in the burning city and ended up injured or with burns on the sports ground.
We don’t think that she is dead. Maybe she has been taken to a military hospital in the Sudetenland just as many others. And because she thinks we were all killed, she isn’t coming forward. She also has not contacted my brother in Sandershausen, the tax official Pfromm. Maybe she’s been put up with a farmer and he has not registered her so that the child is not on the lists.

Basil George Ambrose was born on 24th June 1923 in Derby Street, Reading, the youngest of five children. He attended Wilson Road School near Reading’s football Ground. In 1937, when he was just 14 years old, he left school and took up employment as an apprentice turner at the Pulsometer. He was paid five shillings a week, half of which he had to give back to pay for his indenture training.

Although engineering was a reserve occupation, on 6th March 1942, he was able to join the RAF as a trainee turner. On completion of training, he passed out as a Leading Aircraftsman and was posted to RAF Sealand. Whilst there, he applied, and was accepted, for Flight Engineer training at St Athan.

His first ever flight was memorable in that he took the opportunity to join an old family friend (a test pilot at St Athan) who was taking a Beaufighter up for an air test. While airbourne over the Bristol Channel he witnessed a long line of merchant ships, all nose to tail as far as the eye could see, the ships were readying for the for the D Day landings.

On 7the June 1944, he completed his Flight Engineer training and joined the HBCU at RAF Swinderby, before moving on to the Lancaster Finishing School at RAF Syerston. In September 1944, Sergeant Ambrose and his crew, now fully trained, joined 467 Squadron (RAAF) at RAF Waddington.

On just his second operational flight, tasked with destroying enemy field guns in Holland, his aircraft had to drop below the cloud base at just 4000 feet. Almost immediately, the aircraft alongside them was hit by ack-ack and went down in flames. Basil’s aircraft returned safely, but the mission ended in failure.

Just over a fortnight later, his first ever night operation proved even more eventful, one they were all very fortunate to survive. En-route to Brunswick, a fire in the cabin set alight the blackout curtains surrounding the pilot and navigator. Basil had to use two extinguishers to put out the fire. The events caused significant delay and at their estimated time of arrival on target, they were still approximately 40 miles away. By the time they got there all the other aircraft had gone through and were on their way home. Basil’s aircraft was now completely alone over the target and although they were able to drop their bombs successfully, the aircraft was illuminated by a whole cone of search lights from the ground, plus an enemy fighter aircraft was fast coming in from the port side. The skipper took evasive action by immediately putting the aircraft into a 5000 feet dive and Basil found himself pinned to the cabin ceiling by the ‘G’ force; conversely when the aircraft pulled out of the dive, he was forced down to the cabin floor. The evasive manoeuvre was repeated one more time before they managed to lose the searchlights and the fighter. The trip home was conducted at low level without further alarm. In all, Basil and his crew went on to record thirty operations together.

After 467 Squadron, Basil was commissioned as a Pilot Officer and was posted to 617 Squadron in April 1945. He was never to fly operationally again although with 617 Squadron he served for a brief period in Digri, India. Basil reached the rank of Flying Officer and was demobbed in 1948.

Basil returned to the Pulsometer and finally qualified as a turner. After a short period working in Birmingham, he settled in Reading with his wife Jean and two children. He continued to work in engineering, eventually moving into the engineering safety field. He retired from his final position of Chief Safety Advisor for Greater London Council in 1981.

Robert McClements was born on 6 December 1924, in Belfast. He left school at the age of 14 and worked various jobs to help support his family. While there was no conscription in Northern Ireland, in late 1943 while working at the Harland and Wolff shipyard he volunteered to join the RAF, as aircrew.
Following basic training at RAF Bridlington and then initial gunnery training at RAF Bridgnorth, he was posted to RAF Pembry to join No 1 AGS and train as an air gunner. Air gunners course · IBCC Digital Archive (lincoln.ac.uk)
He completed the gunnery course in February 1944 and was posted to No 20 OTU at RAF Lossiemouth and then on to 1658 HCU, at RAF Ricall, to train on Halifax aircraft. In July 1944, with all training finally completed, he began his operational flying with 10 Squadron at RAF Melbourne flying Halifax aircraft.
His early operational trips passed without incident, but on one operation the aircraft experienced heavy icing, causing it to lose all lift and go into an uncontrolled descent. With the aircraft going straight down the order to ‘Bale out’ was given, Robert managed to get out of his gunner position, but then found himself forced to the floor unable to move. In the cockpit, the pilot engaged full power and he and his engineer battled with the control column to pull the aircraft out of its dive. The flight home passed uneventfully although the engineer reported that the aircraft never ever flew again.
Throughout the rest of his tour there were other eventful sorties. On one, two of the bombs ‘hung up’ and they had to release them from the carrier units using an axe. On another, the bomb aimer forgot to press the bomb-release button so they had to go around again. Luck was again on his side when, on a night raid, another aircraft on a turning point swung across the top of his Halifax, narrowly missing the top of his gun turret. Robert went on to complete a full operational flying tour of 38 operational sorties over Belgium, France and Germany amassing over 200 flying hours. PMcClementsR1503.2.jpg (1600×1299) (lincoln.ac.uk)
After his operational tour, Robert was released from flying duties. He remained at RAF Melbourne and trained as a Unit Fire Officer and he and his flight engineer took charge of the station warrant officer’s office. During a routine site inspection, he met a German prisoner of war who was making a wooden model of a Catalina aircraft for the officers’ mess. Robert asked him to make a model of his Halifax aircraft for him. The aircraft, remarkable in its detail, has been a treasured memento of his time served in the RAF. Robert McClements and his model of Halifax ZA-V · IBCC Digital Archive (lincoln.ac.uk)
Robert met his future wife, Iris, on a visit to the Observer Corp HQ at York where she was a serving member. He left the RAF in 1947 having attained the rank of Temporary Warrant Officer. He and Iris settled in England where they worked with her father, in York. Latterly, he and Iris set up their own business in Wakefield selling motor vehicles.
Chris Cann
Iris McClements (nee Dobson) remembers, at the age of 11, being issued with a gas mask before the war had started. When she was about 13 years of age, her family moved to Eldwick to avoid the bombs.
She was a member of the Home Guard before joining the Women’s Junior Air Corp where she attained the rank of sergeant. She recalled wearing a grey uniform, being issued with a bucket, stirrup pump and helmet for fire watching and learning the theory of the internal combustion engine.
In 1944, she passed the entrance exam to join the Royal Observer Corps and was based in York, as a plotter. Her role was to listen to information from the spotters via headphones and place it on to the plotting table. This included the number of aircraft, direction of travel, height, and whether they were friendly or hostile. This was to give warning of enemy operations or to track operations heading to Germany. She worked eight-hour shifts which changed each week. The spotters in the outposts were also watching for aircraft that were going to crash-land, so that the crash sites could be identified. Iris visited a couple of these sites. She met her husband to be, Robert, on one of his visits to the Royal Observer Corp HQ in York.
She lived on an ex-World War One motor launch in York that the family had used for recreation. When off duty she would often travel into York to go dancing, swimming and to the cinema.
After the war she and Robert worked with her father in the motor trade. She then set up business with Robert in Wakefield.

LUCKY ESCAPE – iii
One night on return – on the circuit we collided with another A/C on opposite direction – losing about 4-5 foot of the tip of main plane and nearly spun upside down – but recovered level flying – and landed – OK!!
On the night of July 24th in Lancaster VN-O. 50 Sqdn Skellingthorpe we were on route to Stuttgart when we were attacked by a german night fighter. Which shot away our bomb bay door. Damaged the starboard landing gear Fractured the main spar and put 5-6 cannon shells in the fuel tanks, on a 2nd attack the gunners shot the attacker down. We all agreed to carry on to the target, on arriving back at Base we were told to orbit until all the other A/C were down – On inspection we found that the cannon shells were still there. They were removed and were emptied. They were found to contain SAND instead of explosive – which saved all our lives. A very lucky escape. After a Belly Landing our first big escape.

Dear David
thank you for sending the books back so quickly. It was noble of you, & most unexpected, I never expect anyone to send back any books,
Its a dank, damp, disgusting day, the house is very dull without your family we really miss them very much – Frances would liven anyone up, I hear her grandmother Edwards thinks she [word deleted] be talking, I don't agree because I think there is far too much talk in the world, & I like the sort of conversation Frances indulges in, its so restful you can answer as you like or not, & need not discuss the subject further than you will or wish to. Its a good thing grandmothers do not meet [deleted] more [/deleted] too often to discuss their ideas on the bringing up of their grandchildren the differences of opinion might prove awkward
[page break]
I can imagine myself & Pa Moloney having terrible arguments.
I went to see Eliza, I thought she looked tired, but William looked fine & very friendly.
I have been trying to compose a 21st birthday letter to Norman, but its such a dank cold day that I feel very uninspired -
I am sorry that they have passed you as fit for service anywhere, I think you had better grow another large crop of boils -
We did enjoy your leave, it was really lovely having all three of you, the bicycles look very forlorn in the basement, without any [deleted] riders [/deleted] hope of any riders.
Very much love
from
