My dear [underlined] Harold [/underlined],
All of us send you our congratulations & are very pleased that the things which you have done so quietly in true Duggie Wakefield fashion have been noticed by those in authority, & that full appreciation has been made to you by giving you a decoration which in years to come will undoubtedly be one of your most treasured possessions. Not only will you be proud to wear it but it will always remind you of the good fellowship that can be created by sharing good times as well as dangerous ones with boys who you will
[page break]
always remember.
We were just as proud on reading the news as if you had been our own boy & were so overcome with pride & pleasure as your own Mother & Father were.
We phoned them as soon as we read it & were greatly surprised to hear from your Father that they like us had only just read it. They are very proud of you & were overcome with joy.
I guess Gordon will be writing to you as we have of course told him the news in our letter to him to-day.
This 'Honour' will be a great help to you now you are training others to carry on where you left off & we hope you are content.
Very best of luck.
Yours E & C Collier.

Dear Mrs. Waring, [sic]
I felt I must write you a short note when I heard from Alan that you had received news of Bob. I am terribly pleased for you, because I know the extremely trying and anxious time you are going through. Those letters must have helped you a great deal.
I also was very thrilled when Alan told me, because I knew Bob better than the rest of the crew, and had a special
[page break]
feeling for him, as he was ‘best man’ at our wedding. He’s a grand person.
This type of letter I know is not much help to you, in fact I think it helps the writer more than the receiver, but I do want you to know that our thoughts are with you, and hope that it will not be very long now before you and Bob have the same reunion as Alan and I have been fortunate [inserted] enough [/inserted] to have. When that day comes we will all have to meet and have a grand celebration.
Yours sincerely,
Anne Hill.
Please do not bother to answer this, because I’m sure you must have a lot of correspondence to deal with

My Dear Joan.
I have been meaning to write to you for ages – ever since I heard the news that Bob was ‘missing’ – but I have been trailing round the country-side after Don – what a wonderful surprise when I got back to Cottesmore – and Mum showed me your letter to her – I am so
[page break]
relieved and delighted that your Bob is a prisoner. How simply marvellous my dear. What you must have been through through [sic] – with all the dreadful anxiety and worry. We were so interested in all the news you had to tell us about him – but above all are so thankfull [sic] that he is safe. I do hope his recovery from his injuries will be a speedy one.
Mummy asks me to send you her love and so many thanks for your

interesting letter.
for the last 6 weeks I have been weaving all over England. Don and I left Shrewsbury at the end of August, where we had a flat. I then came home with all our luggage as Don had to go to London for a couple of days. He was then posted to Scotland – and had almost got digs for us both when an order came through for him to go on leave to Canada! So he was sent to Manchester. Then managed to get 9 days
[page break]
rang me up on Saturday to say that he has been told at the last moment that he [underlined] wasn’t [/underlined] going on leave, but that it was a posting – [underlined] for duties [/underlined]! Can you beat it! I was completely stunned. But I’m passed being surprised at what the R.A.F. will do next. All I can do now is [underlined] wait [/underlined] and see what will happen to him next.
I am going back to Burley I think to do a job – as there’s no future
[page break]
in doing nothing.
So please just send us a postcard if you have any more news of Bob. As we would so love to hear.
Dick has now gone down to Torquay after 3 weeks leave which he loved.
Bye-by for now. We’re all keeping our fingers crossed for you my dear.
With love and lots of Good wishes-
Yours [underlined] Jean [/underlined]

[underlined]THE FENS[/underlined]
We are not lost; beyond no far recall,
Who have loved the singing of the night
And won it surely; strongly held
Its quiet splendour to our hearts and deep,
Laughing its greatness to each conquered star;
Nor lonely to the sibilance of the wind
Across the paths of dark; but free
And lighter than a breeze on silent hills,
Than mist on meadows ………
From afar,
Lovely and great as ever, still we find
Constant to each, high sanctuary
In the supernal ways of love, and undispelled,
A beauty stronger than death that fills
The night with peace. Your hands creep
About my head and hold me. An infinite
Calm, a dreamless quietness lies over all.
