FLYING LOG BOOK
The following are Photostats of pages from my flying log book. They are a record of the operations made by me over enemy-occupied territory in 1944.
Although the completed missions were obviously very dangerous, those we were unable to complete (abortive) nevertheless remain the clearest in my memory. There were two.
The first, on the 8th August, was an op to Aire, a short trip which meant we had a bomb load of 12,000 lbs. However, shortly after take off we were faced with a massive thunderstorm. We attempted to fly above it, but it built and rose as fast as we did. Eventually we entered the cloud, and almost immediately flew into the downdraft. We fell from our ceiling approximately 24,000ft like a stone. At approximately 12,000ft we began to pull out of the dive and the controls began to respond. Our impetus took us down to 4,000ft before we pulled out and climbed to 12,000ft. At this time we realised we were losing height again even with the [deleted] two [/deleted] engines at full power. We decided to return to base as it was obvious we could not complete the op. as we were above the North Sea it was decided to jettison the bombs. This proved to be impossible as we were unable to open the bomb bay doors. The maximum speed we could maintain was about 140 mph and we were gradually losing height. We found out later that both the outboard engines had torn away from their side mountings and they were pointing down about 15 degrees, pulling us down even though we were at full power.
We reached Wickenby with a few hundred feet to spare and made a perfect landing. We had to. We could not have gained height again for another attempt. As we touched down on the runway the photo flash, equivalent to a 500lb bomb, fell out and came bouncing down the runway behind us, sparks flying everywhere. Luckily it didn’t explode. We were directed to the most remote area of the airfield and evacuated the aircraft in record time.
During the descent in the cloud we were entertained by a most brilliant display of St. Elmo’s Fire. The whole aircraft was covered with balls of fire running about. We took photographs but none showed the fire. However, parts of the plane showed as clear as if the photographs had been taken in sunlight.

The plane had been almost torn apart in the encounter. The rivets had been torn from the leading edge of the wings and tail-plane. The wings were twisted as was the body. The engineers from AVRO said they could not understand how the plane had remained airborne as long as it had. In their report after tests we received a letter from them stating that to sustain such damage the plane had to exceed 570 mph. if that was the case I believe we flew the fastest bomber in World War II. The tests on UMH2 were carried out under the supervision of Roy Chadwick and the letter to our Navigator was written in long hand, not typed and the original was kept by Jimmy. We all had copies unfortunately mine was lost when moving.
The second abortive was on 5th October 1944, Saarbrucken, when we hit icy conditions so bad that we lost two engines and all suffered some degree of frostbite.
We were routed over the edge of the mountains so were unable to lose height for some time. We were unable to climb and so aborted. We all suffered, also in later life. One engine re-started once we descended.
My most memorable successful operation was when dropping mines in the Kiel Canal from 500ft. We flew straight along the canal dropping one mine at a time in what was one of the most heavily defended targets of the war. There was so much firing along the canal that we could see almost as clearly as in daylight.
We all felt fear at times, but it affects people differently. For me it was a stimulant and when a civilian I was unable to settle until I became a fireman.
I flew on two other ops to cover for bods who could not get back to the station in time and their crews asked me to help out to save the absentees getting into trouble. On one op the C.O. knew what was going on as that morning he called me to his office to offer me a commission (which I had to refuse owing to putting my age up to join the RAF). He recognised me at briefing and knew I was with the wrong crew. However he did nothing except to say that he needed to know if I did it again.
After surviving a few trips we were given our own aircraft, UMF2, already a veteran of many ops. She proved to be a most dependable aircraft. Apart from the number of bombs painted on the side we also had the nude lady which I understand was repainted by the next crew after we completed our tour. The lady was no longer reclining but standing partly clothed. At a reunion a chap said it had been ordered to be removed, which it was, but repainted standing and captioned ‘Frigger of the fighting sixes’ instead of ‘Friga of -----. Whoever gave the order must have got the message as it survived. It was a special aircraft in that for some reason it had a much better performance than the vast majority of Lancs. She flew faster than others on

the same revs and boost and it didn’t make any difference when engines were changed. Fuel consumption was better, a lovely plane. We never found her ceiling and she performed well in all weather conditions. Only once when on an op to Saarbrucken on 5th October 1944 did we have real problems with icing and engine failure with loss of all heating. We all suffered from frostbite and had to abort.
However, on 12th September 1944 target Frankfurt, when evading a fighter JU88 I smashed my lower jaw and was placed sick. The rest of the crew then had two abortives and became convinced I was their luck and pleaded with me to sign myself off which I did and flew with my jaw strapped up, hardly able to talk and still living on liquids. Wearing my oxygen mask I was in agony, but at least the pain kept me awake. Bone splinters from the jaw were still working their way out 40 years later. I was still unable to eat properly for many years and on occasions my jaw would lock solid for weeks at a time. Jaw and Larynx damage caused speech to be impaired and loss of voice if projected for more than a short period. Damage also caused a loss in inflexion ability.
Once the bombs had gone we either flew high or very low on our way home, preferably very high and as on the outward journey, weaving about all the time to allow us the greatest chance of seeing anyone underneath us, a method that stood us in good stead twice. On a moonlit night we flew high, on dark nights low, avoiding lit up areas. We used cloud cover at times, but not if our shadow was thrown.
UMF2 survived the war. I was told she completed over one hundred ops, but have not confirmed it. She was one of the only two aircraft to fly from beginning to and of Squadron Ops period and had been on C Flight 12 Squadron before C Flight became 626 Squadron.
Like many other crews we all learnt as much as possible about each others jobs and agreed amongst ourselves who was the best substitute for who. It was decided that Stu Tween W/OP was best gunner, Jim Jackson, N, was best B/A, Johnny Payne B/A, best F/E. Johnny Moore, MU/G best W/OP. I was best Pilot and also Nav, but every one of us practised at all other positions. I was the only one to land the aircraft which I only did 3 times with a very nervous skipper hovering and the rest on tenterhooks too. What would have happened if I had needed to do it with a dodgy aircraft I have no idea. Landing occasions were on August 1st, V2 on return from Rufforth, August 21st F2 and 29th F2, September 9th Navigated whole trip, September 27th, Navigated whole trip.
I had been taught to fly and navigate by a First World War[deleted]t[/deleted] pilot, my father also and tried to keep up-to-date as I grew older.

Recollections of the navigator of one of the Lancasters which took part in the attack of Dresden on 13th/14th February 1945.
One of the Lancasters which bombed Dresden was “P” Peter which was one of the fifteen aircraft from 153 Squadron which was based at Scampton, Lincolnshire.
The crew of “P” Peter was made up of a South African, Donald Legg who was the pilot, a Canadian Russell Rawlings, the wireless operator, a Welshman from Liverpool, Dave Jones, who was the bomb aimer, an Englishman Andy Andrews, the upper gunner and three

Donald Legg, the South African was 32 and much older than the other members of the crew who were in their early twenties.
The Lancaster “P” Peter was the second one of that name which this crew had had. Their first one had been destroyed a few weeks earlier when after a bombing operation on the Urft dam the first “P” Peter had been hit by flak which had started a fire in the port engine. The fire could not be extinguished but the pilot had been able to fly as far as Brussells [sic] and to land there. Brussells [sic] was at that time in the hands of the Allies.

At the briefing before the operation the crews were advised that the target was to be Dresden and that the Russians had particularly asked that the RAF carry out the attack to help them. The Russians had believed that there was a build up of German troops and armour in Dresden preparing to make a counter attack on them.
To the crews involved it was simply another operation, the principal difference between it and the others being that it was for a longer distance than the average operation and that they would be under possible attack from enemy fighters and flak for a longer period of time.

There was a strong wind from the west blowing when “P” Peter took off at 21.22 pm.
After climbing to 10,000 feet it joined the main bomber force at Reading and then headed south east on a course of 148° crossing the English coast near Eastbourne and the French coast near Abbeyville. It then altered course to 109° until 0053 am when at a point 20 miles from Darmstadt it altered course to 086° and flew on it for 14 minutes for about 65 miles heading in the direction of Nurnberg. It then altered course again to 081° and flew towards a point to the north of Nurnberg.

At 0107 am it altered course to 045° and flew towards Leipzig. When about 35 miles south of Leipzig it made its last change of course to 082° direct to Dresden which it reached at 0138.
It had now flown 843 miles in 4 hours and 16 minutes and was at a height of 18000 feet. The temperature was minus 23c. and the speed of the wind was 82 miles per hour.
The bomb aimer Dave Jones then directed the pilot to the target which was a factory on the south bank of the Elbe and released the bomb load accurately on the target at 1.40 am.

Immediately after the bombs were released the navigator gave the pilot a new couse [sic] to fly south east from Dresden for 14 miles. At 146 am the pilot was asked to change his course to 243° ie to the south west and to fly to a point 25 miles south of Chemnitz (which incidentally the crew returned to on another operation the following night) After flying 62 miles on this course the aircraft again changed course to 226° and flew to a point about 20 miles south east of Nurnberg “P” Peter then flew the next 111 miles on a course of 248° to a point about 20 miles south of Stuttgart which it reached at 3.28 am.

At that point the navigator asked the pilot to change course to 268° and to fly on that course for 110 miles to a point 25 miles south of Strasbourg which was reached at 4.13 am.
“P” Peter was still flying at 18,000 feet into a westerly head wind which had increased to 90 mph. The pilot then realised that there was not enough petrol in the tanks to get home if the last dog leg on the flight plan was followed and that it was essential to fly on a straight course back to Scampton. He therefore asked the navigator to work out a new course direct to Base and was given a course of 305%[sic]. He reduced height from 18,000 feet

to 10,000 feet at which height the speed of the wind fell from 90 mph to 45 mph. At the lower height the temperature rose from minus 23c to minus 8c.
There were still 460 miles to fly to base.
“P” Peter crossed the French coast near Dunkirk at 6.21 am and reached Scampton at 7.36 am with its fuel tanks almost empty.
Due to diversionary tactics which confused the Germans no enemy fighters were encountered on this operation but this was very exceptional and there had been no sign of the Luftwaffe being any less strong or active previous to or after the Dresden operation. In the previous week “P” Peter had taken part in a raid of Politz near Stellin and had being [sic] damaged after being hit in the port

engine. On the following night, the 14th of February “P” Peter and its crew were detailed to fly on another long flight to Chemnitz which was 35 miles west of Dresden when the aircraft was hit 5 times.
Most of the Dresden crews were given time to rest after the long Dresden flight and the writer cannot remember why his crew were asked to fly on two very long flights on two nights running.
In the following week on 21st February when “P” Peter and its crew took part in a raid on Duisburg the flight engineer Jack Ross counted 5 Lancasters going down in flames after being hit by enemy fighters or anti aircraft fire.

The personal views of the navigator about the attack on Dresden are that at the time it was just one other operation which was intended to give assistance to the Russian allies and be a further step in defeating the enemy which had still a powerful war machine in operation and was quite capable of carrying on the war long enough to develop and use the more powerful weapons which they were working on namely guided rockets and the atom bomb.
He firmly believes that the devastating destruction caused to Dresden, which was contributed to by an exceptionally strong wind that night, was such a psychological blow to the Germans that it resulted in the war ending

many months earlier than it would otherwise have done and so saved probably hundreds of thousands of lives of death camp prisoners, British and American servicemen and British civilians.
At this stage of the war Germany still occupied much of Europe including Yugoslavia, Greece and the Channel Islands. Jews were still being murdered and the gas chambers were still operating in the concentration camps.
The Germans had developed a new weapon, the V2, and were attacking London with these rockets.
There was no clear indication of when the war which was in its fifth year would end.
The orders to bomber crews were to hit only military targets and this they endeavoured to do despite the heavy enemy defences.

Dear Mrs Wareing, I should be very glad if you could give me news of your husband. I hope very sincerely that he has been sent home as soon as le Havre was liberated. Please do not be surprised at my inquiring about him. He will surely remember me. I am the girl who came to speak English with him on the morning of the 8th of August, when he had fallen with his parachute in fire. He will tell you that both the doctor an myself made our very best for him. Unfortunately we were surrounded by foul and vile people who told the boches[?] about him and he was made a prisoner. I have not been able to know if he was all right when the allied troops entered Le Havre on September 12th but somebody told me that he had been sent to England with some other boys found either in the Fort de Tourneville[?] where they kept the prisoners, or in the Hospital. It was also I who sent you a message through the French Forces, trying to let you know that your husband was alive. I should be glad to know if you even got that message and when. Kindly remind me to your gallant and brave squadron leader if he is at last back home and, do let me know about both of you.

Flying log book for flight engineers for T Knox, covering the period from 30 January 1944 to 17 January 1947. Detailing his flying training, operations flown and post war duties as a parachute instructor. He was stationed at RAF Stradishall, RAF Lakenheath, RAF Methwold, RAF North Creake, RAF Finningly, RAF Sealand, RAF Ringway, RAF Cosford, RAF Upper Heyford and RAF Aqir. Aircraft flown in were, Stirling, Halifax, Lancaster, Dakota and Horsa Glider. He flew a total of 40 operations, 21 with 149 Squadron, 2 daylight and 19 night time operations, of which 9 were special operations to France, and 19 night time operations with 199 Squadron carrying out radio counter measure support of bombing operations. Targets were, Lille, Laon, Kiel Bay, Frisian Islands, St Malo, Brest, Pas de Calais, North Sea, Brussels, Saarbrucken, Sylt, Wilhelmshaven, Mönchengladbach, Koblenz, Zuider Sea, Trier, Strasbourg, Duisberg, Wiesbaden, Gavet and Munster. His pilots on operations were Flight Lieutenant Coventry and Flight Sergeant Millar. This item was sent to the IBCC Digital Archive already in digital form. No better quality copies are available.

Ian Grant Henderson’s navigator’s log book covering the period from 28 June 1943 to 9 Aug 1945. Detailing his flying training and operations flown as navigator. He was stationed at RCAF Edmonton (2 AOS), RAF Bishops Court (7 OAFU), RAF Peplow (83 OTU), RAF Blyton (1662 HCU), RAF Kirmington (166 Squadron and 153 Squadron), RAF Crosby-on-Eden (109 OTU). Aircraft flown in were Anson, Wellington, Halifax, Lancaster and Dakota. He flew a total of 11 operations with 166 Squadron and 21 with 153 Squadron, total 32 plus one leaflet drop (Blois) and one recall (Neuss). His pilot on operations was Flight Lieutenant Legg. Targets were Calais, Saarbrucken, Emmerich, Duisburg, Stuttgart, Essen, Cologne, Wanne Eichel, Duren, Dortmund, Urft Dam, Royan, Bonn, Bottrip, Heligoland Bight (mining), Politz, Dresden, Chemnitz, Mannheim, Misburg, Bremen, Harpererheg, Paderborn and Lutzkendorf. Pilot’s flying log book for J Vasey covering the period from 20 July 1942 to 28 April 1946. Detailing his flying training and operations flown as pilot. He was stationed at RAF Cambridge (22 EFTS) RCAF Neepawa (35 EFTS), RCAF Weyburn (41 SFTS), RAF Shellingford (3 EFTS), RAF Church Lawford (18 PAFU), RAF Fiskerton (1514 BAT Flight), RAF Silverstone (17 OTU), RAF Swinderby (1654 HCU), RAF East Kirkby (57 Squadron), RAF Syerston (5 LFS), RAF Finningley (BCIS), RAF Wigsley (1654 HCU), RAF Welford (1336 TSCU), RAF Palam (353 Squadron), RAF Meiktelia (10 Squadron). He had two Red Endorsements. Aircraft flown in were Tiger Moth, Anson, Oxford, Wellington, Halifax, Lancaster and Dakota.
He flew a total of 30 operations with 57 Squadron (24 by night and six by day), targets were Darmstadt, Koningsberg, Bergoneuse, Stuttgart, Bremerhaven, Rheydt, Munster, Karlsruhe, Kaiserlauten, Bremen, Brunswick, Nuremburg, Dusseldorf, Dortmund-Ems Canal, Hamburg, Gravenhorst, Trondheim, Munich, Heinbach dam, Oslo, Royan, Leuna, Siegen, Cologne, Wilhelmshaven, Veerk, Homburg, Duren and Ladbergen. His pilot for his first 'second dickie' operation was Squadron Leader Fairburn. After December 1944 he instructed and then flew transport operations in the Far East.

His first or second pilots on operations were Flying Officer Dawes, Sergeant Wade, Sergeant Farley, Sergeant Line, Sergeant Wildman and Flying Officer Small.

Herbert Tinning’s Royal Australian Air Force Observer’s Air Gunner’s And W/T Operator’s Flying Log Book from 25th August 1942 to 11th March 1945. Recording his training as a navigator in Australia and Great Britain and a full tour of operations with 51 squadron, followed by a short period with 96 squadron (Transport Command). He was based at RAAF Cootamundra, RAAF Sale, RAAF Nhill, RAF Desford, RAF West Freugh, RAF Lichfield, RAF Church Broughton, RAF Marston Moor, RAF Snaith and RAF Leconfield. Aircraft in which flown: Anson, Battle, Tiger Moth, Wellington and Halifax. He flew 40 operations (19 day, 19 night, 2 abandoned/recalled) on the following targets in Belgium, France and Germany: Alencon, Boulogne, Brest, Caen (Emieville), Calais, Cape Griz Nez, Chateaudon, Collines-Beaumont, Croixdalle, Essen, Foret de Nieppe, Hannover, Haringzelles, Hasselt, Herquelingue, Homberg, Kiel, Kleves, Le Grand Rossignol, Le Havre, Les Catelliers, Marquise, Mont Fleury, Morsalines, Neuss (Dusseldorf), Oisemont, Siracourt, St Martin L’hortier, Sterkrade, Stuttgart, Trappes, Villers Bocage, Wilhemshaven and Wizernes. His pilot on operations was Flight Sergeant Moore. On 6th June 1944 he notes: “‘D’ DAY OPENING OF SECOND FRONT”. In October 1944 he notes “AWARDED - DFC”.

Observer’s and air gunner’s flying log book for F Mottershead, wireless operator, covering the period from 29 April 1943 to 9 April 1945. Detailing his flying training and operations flown. He was stationed at RCAF Calgary, RCAF Mossbank, RCAF Pat Bay, RAF Lichfield, RAF West Freugh, RAF Syerston and RAF Waddington. Aircraft flown in were Norseman, Fort II, Bolingbroke, Anson, Hampden, Wellington, Stirling and Lancaster. He flew a total of 30 operations with 463 squadron, 6 daylight and 24 night. Targets were Rheydt, Dortmund, Calais, Karlsruhe, Kaiserslauten, Wilhelmshaven, Bremen, Flushing, Brunswick, Bergen, Harburg, Duren, Ladbergen, Munich, Heilbronn, Geissen, Gdynia, Houffalize, Mitteland Canal, Politz, Brux, Dresden, Rositz, Bohlen, Wesel, Ijmuiden and Hamburg. His pilots on operations were Flying Officer Smith and Flight Lieutenant Huxtable.

Mother told me how wonderfully well you helped her over he anxious period of waiting. I think this a splendid action of kindness for which I wish to thank you most sincerely & heartily. I know that it won’t be long before we meet again & then I shall have the pleasure of personally thanking you. Since learning that Jim is also a P.O.W. I have been making constant enquiries for news of him from new arrivals. Coincidentally, just some days ago newly commissoned[sic] N.C.Os from Stalag IZB[?] knew of Jim for that is where he is. One particular lad knows Jim quite well. He tells me that they are being well treated there & as usual the Red Cross makes life so much better. I believe Jim is living with Army boys, is looking very well & in the best of health. Unfortunately I cannot correspond with Jim. This news cheered me greatly. Well, Mrs Cahir, I know that the hands are close to 12 o’clock. With the Grace of God we should spend a happy Xmas & I do hope that Jim & I are together, whether it be in England, on the sea, or in good old Aussie. I am most optimistic but preferr[sic] to be that way. My regards to Pat & Vince. I hope that all goes well with them. For now cheerio and all my love and wishes. Yours Des[?]

Flying log book for navigators, air bombers, air gunners, flight engineers for John Lambourn, flight engineer, covering the period from 4 July 1944 to 8 December 1944. Detailing his flying training and operations flown. He was stationed at RAF St Athan, RAF Chedburgh, RAF Feltwell and RAF Waterbeach. Aircraft flown in were, Stirling and Lancaster. He flew a total of 30 operations, 23 daylight and 7 night operations with 514 squadron. Targets were, Falaise, St. Trond, Russelsheim, Kiel, Stettin, Eindhoven, Boulogne, Calais, Cap Griz Nez, Saarbrucken, Duisberg, Stuttgart, Flushing, Essen, Bottrop, Solingen, Homberg, Castrop, Heinsburg, Gelsenkirchen and Hamm. His pilot on operations was Flying Officer Edmundson.

An account of the resource
140 items. The collection concerns Warrant Officer Arthur Pearce (1874945 Royal Air Force) He served as an air gunner with 12, 170 and 156 (Pathfinder) Squadrons and completed a 44 operations. After the war, on 35 Squadron he took part in the June 1946 Victory flypast over London and a goodwill visit to the United States. It contains his diaries, memorabilia and photographs.
The collection also contains an album concerning his post war activity with the Goodwill tour of the United States.
The collection has been loaned to the IBCC Digital Archive for digitisation by Steve Allan and catalogued by Nigel Huckins
