An account of the resource
674 Items. Collection concerns navigator Warrant Officer J R McKenzie Valentine (1251404 Royal Air Force). The collection contains over 600 letters between JRM Valentine and his wife Ursula. It also contains his log book, family/official documents, a book of violin music studies and other correspondence. He joined 49 Squadron in April 1942 and flew 10 operations on Hampdens. The squadron converted to Manchester in May when he completed two further operations. His aircraft was shot down on the Thousand Bomber raid of 30/31 May 1942. Five crew, including him bailed out successfully and became prisoners of war. The pilot and one air gunner were killed when the aircraft rolled over and crashed.

No mail from you, dearest. I’m still in the dark as to how you have fared May onwards. We eagerly follow the daily progress of events (& of the Allies) but the time passes very slowly, more so than ever before. We have a library going at last. Unfortunately our Red X food issue has suffered a permanent cut of 50% - a general one I believe in all British P.OW. camps. We have been on this scale for a few weeks but, strangely enough, I feel it very little & am as fit as ever. My practice troubles continue though. I only manage 2-3 hours daily & those in the most distressing of circumstances but I am doggedly resolved not to give in now even if lack of ability forces me to do so when I become a free man once more. Incidentally if the fiddle youve bought for me has no “E” string adjuster, would you get one. Love to you & Francis John

Immediately, the flaps were retracted and the Whitley continued with its approach but as it turned finals, and the flaps were once again lowered, the nose pitched up and the aircraft stalled, plunging to the ground on the boundary of the airfield, where it burst into flames. Those who died rest in various cemeteries across the United Kingdom. This was the first major accident involving an aircraft from the unit since its formation in mid-March 1942.

Sept 17/44. My dear Joan, I am very fit and well trust you are the same. The weather is very nice here but it is cold first thing in the mornings and the days are drawing shorter. I shall be sorry if I have to spend another winter as a prisoner, all the fellows here are counting on being home by Christmas, it would be marvelous [sic]. I expect you will receive this letter about then. I had all my hair off last march but it is almost back to normal now, I shall soon have to have it trimmed again, it was much better in the summer having a bald head, it saved all the sand blowing into it. I received five letters from you last week. April 4, 8, 17 & 18 and March 29, one of them contained photo of [indecipherable words]. I thought it was David at first. I shall be very glad to receive some of him. Miss Redding was certainly very good to you. I haven't done much reading lately, I have been watching cricket most of the time. There are three fellows here I was at school with, Laurie Collins of Grimsby, Pete Gurnell of Scawby and Ray Colbeck of Scunthorpe, the last named is an army boy and gets letters from a girl in St Catherine's Rd Grantham. Who is this Dick who is missing, is it Dick Campling. A fellow next to me says it wont be long now, I hope he is right. Give my love to everyone especially to David, tell him I may see him one of these days. We are only getting a half a red cross parcel now I am afraid. All my love Walt.
