No. 582 Squadron,
R.A.F. Station,
Little Staughton,
St Neots, Hunts.
9th August 1944.
Dear Mrs Wareing,
I deeply regret to inform you that your husband, Squadron Leader Robert Wareing D.F.C., failed to return from operations carried out over enemy territory on the night of 7th/8th August, 1944.
There is, at the time of writing, no news to give you beyond this brief statement.
Your husband was the Captain of a very experienced and capable crew, with a keen sense of loyalty to and co-operation with myself as their Squadron Commander, and with their fellows. They set an example of courage, skill and coolness of a very high order, an example which will be greatly missed. Your husband was a young man of exceptional charm of manner with a keen sense of humour, and was one of the most popular Officers in the Squadron.
It is desired to explain that the request in the telegram notifying you of the casualty to your husband was included with the object of avoiding his chance of escape being prejudiced by undue publicity in case he was still at large. This is not to say that any information about him is available, but is a precaution adopted in the case of all personnel reported "Missing".
Your husband's personal effects are being carefully collected, and will be sent to the Central Depository at Colnbrook whence they will reach you in due course.
You may rest assured that I shall communicate with you immediately any news concerning your husband comes to hand. Meanwhile, please accept the profound sympathy of my Squadron and of myself, with our hope that further information may soon be available.
Yours sincerely,

Dear Joan,
Bert said that he was going to write to you, but has gone out. Whether he has done so or not, I feel that I must send you a few lines, to tell you of our deep sorrow when we heard the sad news that Bob is missing.
We truly sympathise with you in this anxious time, & trust that you will soon be receiving news, that he is safe, no matter where. He was such a competent pilot, that I feel sure, if there was a chance of bringing his aircraft to land, he would succeed.
All your friends at Crowle await further news, & pray that it will not be long before you can give word that he has come through.
With love & kindest thoughts from us all
Yrs sincerely
Amy Gamidge.

My dearest Mummiekins,
There is till[sic] no leave in view every body is most busy here and also am Scivvy for a change. I don’t think I have done so much work in a day since I have been in the RAF.
Well I am now carrying on where Lulu left off and it is grand fun and believe me there is nothing to worry about.
Have you heard from him lately. I wish I could see him now and have
[page break]
A big “line shoot” [indecipherable word] & should imagine it could be lots of fun although I expect he would in no time “shoot me down in flames” or if you prefer out line shoot me.
How is Daddy now has he had all his teeth out I bet, if he has he will be going round the house having fun and games by making his chin touch his nose and pulling funny faces. Talking about teeth did I tell you that I have had some new ones made but I have not got them yet but hope to have them in a day or so.
When I come home on
[page break]
Leave I would like to have Dorreen[sic] stay for a weekend do you think that you could break the ice I think she would like to come again as I believe she likes your cooking a little less or more than I do etc and it would be something for me to do if I don’t get my bike going and I expect it will be quite dull down there now. are the roads still closed etc.
Must close now as I am quite tired.
Lots of love Mummiekins Am Scivvy XXX
P.S. I can’t find that form you sent.

[Letterhead]
EBB/EMM/RAF/C7289
9th August, 1944.
Dear Mrs. Wynn,
Although we are still, unhappily, without any news of your husband, Sergeant I A. Wynn No. 1024298 Royal Air Force, we are writing to tell you of a further report which we have now received through the International Red Cross Committee about Pilot Officer Russell and Flying Officer Petts, who were flying in the same aircraft.
The German authorities state that the burial of these two officers took place in the Military Cemetery at Venlo, Province of Limburg, Holland, thus indicating in what locality the disaster had occurred. We believe that you would wish to have this statement in your possession, and it is for this reason we are sending it on to you. Unfortunately no information was given regarding the other members of your husband’s crew.
You will know that our efforts on your behalf are continuing and anything which may come to our knowledge concerning your husband or any of his companions will be passed to you
P.T.O.

without fail.
Yours sincerely,
Margaret Ampthill
pp.SBB.
Chairman.
