Aug 9th 44.
Dear Joan,
Bert said that he was going to write to you, but has gone out. Whether he has done so or not, I feel that I must send you a few lines, to tell you of our deep sorrow when we heard the sad news that Bob is missing.
We truly sympathise with you in this anxious time, & trust that you will soon be receiving news, that he is safe, no matter where. He was such a competent pilot, that I feel sure, if there was a chance of bringing his aircraft to land, he would succeed.
All your friends at Crowle await further news, & pray that it will not be long before you can give word that he has come through.
With love & kindest thoughts from us all
Yrs sincerely
Amy Gamidge.

Don Nicholson audio recording. One
Description
An account of the resource
Don was a Flight Engineer with No 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron in 1944-45 at Dunholme Lodge and later at Spilsby and completed 31 operations.
Don lists his 31 operations and recounts how having arrived for the briefing for his first operation, he was grounded by the medical officer and sent to hospital. His crew did six operations without him and did not return from the last one. Having done some operations as a spare flight engineer he describes how he was recruited by a captain who wanted to replace his engineer. He was impressed by his new captain landing a Lancaster with a punctured tyre, ending up on the grass but the aircraft was intact.
He then goes on to describe a number of incidents during his operations. These include bombing the German battle cruiser Lutzow which turned out to be a decoy. Being diverted to Kinloss and the airfield was not open but they had to land as they were out of fuel, they also had a bomb loose in the bomb bay. Returning from an operation below cloud over the North Sea and one of their Lancasters bounced off the water. One of his last operations to Hamburg he did not think that they would survive, they were coned by searchlights, ended up in a power dive when corkscrewing and having recovered flying round to gain height to eventually bomb.

9th August, 1944.
Dear Mrs. Wynn,
Although we are still, unhappily, without any news of your husband, Sergeant I A. Wynn No. 1024298 Royal Air Force, we are writing to tell you of a further report which we have now received through the International Red Cross Committee about Pilot Officer Russell and Flying Officer Petts, who were flying in the same aircraft.
The German authorities state that the burial of these two officers took place in the Military Cemetery at Venlo, Province of Limburg, Holland, thus indicating in what locality the disaster had occurred. We believe that you would wish to have this statement in your possession, and it is for this reason we are sending it on to you. Unfortunately no information was given regarding the other members of your husband’s crew.
You will know that our efforts on your behalf are continuing and anything which may come to our knowledge concerning your husband or any of his companions will be passed to you
P.T.O.

Yours sincerely,
Margaret Ampthill
