Aug 6/44. My dearest Joan, I hope you are keeping well and are receiving plenty of mail from me. I write regularly and can only hope that they are getting thru’ to you. I have not heard from you for two months now and I don’t suppose there will be any for us for some time. We are at an army camp now and the army fellows get their mail thro’ [one indecipherable word] aid, I envy them. We move camps again tomorrow, our second move in less than three weeks, we don’t know where we are going to but I will write you as soon as I am able. I hope baby is getting on all right, I should love to see him, perhaps it won’t be very long before I am home. Everyone here is very confident that the end of the war is in sight, I hope they are right, [deleted] I [/deleted] it seems to have gone on for a lifetime. I hope you have sent some photos to me of David, and I hope I receive them [one indecipherable word] I haven’t received my second personal parcel yet, no doubt it will come thru’ when we get settled at a camp again, I hope so altho there is nothing I am wanting except the chocolate. I haven’t lost any weight since I have been a POW, I was weighed a week or two ago and was an ounce or two under ten stone. Give my love to David and lots to you. Walt.

LINCOLNSHIRE.
England.
Our air craft has been touched by a night fighter. It has fallen down in fore, but I had time to jump off in parachute. I got several important blisters and burns, but a French Doctor tended me with great skilfulness – I hope to be soon in good health – I am now a prisoner, not for a long time – My watch, ring, personal papers and money are in good place. I am to sleep in a hospital at about 30 miles from Havre.
Cheeri-o and good luck,
Love to everybody,

My Dear Mrs. Wareing,
I am sending you a letter which was given to me by a woman when we entered the town of Fecamp a few days ago. I hope it will do something to re-assure you in your worries. The woman disappeared in the crowd before I could ask any questions.
I hope you soon have very good news – the end of it all and your your [sic] husbands' safe return.
Yours very truly,

August 6th 1944.
My Darling Bob.
Many thanks dear for your letter received yesterday. I am sorry to hear that you are feeling so extremely tired these days. You will be realy in need of a long rest on your next leave. With luck you should be here a fortnight today – Wizzard - !
At the moment of writing, I am sunbathing being Sunday afternoon and a wizzard [sic]

day. I expect you are very busy with all the good weather. A.J. has given me the day off tomorrow – if it is good weather – and told me to take “the air”! He seems strangely concerned in my welfare, but don’t be jealous dear. He is only being kind and understanding. He knows quite honestly, that it is only you I care for her [sic] as I talk about you in someway or other every day.
I too had a long letter from Eileen & yesterday she sent

the wedding group taken at outside the chapel. It is quite good, though I think you look somewhat serious dear, possibly with being ‘up’ all the previous evening. I shall write Eileen today.
I met Belle Featonly (or rather Dr. Thomas Dunhill & his wife), my old music teacher & adjudicator. We had quite an interesting chat. She enquired where you were etc. They have come from London for a rest again. The sirens are pretty bad there.
Jill seems to be progressing

quite favourably, but still looks very ill indeed.
Malcolm is coming for a week next week, I think, so he will be anticipating lots of fun, I guess.
Do let me know if ‘little Bob’ is coming with you on leave, that is a day or two before you arrive, if possible, Mum likes to know if possible before hand.
After an early tea, Mum and I cycled to my Aunt’s near Scawby woods. It was wizzard [sic] out in the fresh air, Tomorrow
[page break]
V
we are going over to Messingham. Grandma has been quite ill again with ‘[indecipherable word]’ It seems they go delirious with this complaint, Mum has been chasing too & fro.
The R.A.F. College Band is playing in the Park tonight. I think Mum & I are going to walk round that way to see what goes on. Dad is working 2 – 10 p.m. Worse luck. He says it is terribly hot around the furnaces.
Don’t loose an awful lot of
[page break]
V
sleep over the car, let someone else, do repairs for you. You can’t afford to loose sleep dear. The ‘account’ will be O.K. as I am OK without any cash this month, so don’t let that worry you.
I expect your parcel will be arriving sometime tomorrow.
Well Cheerio for now & may God Bless You for Always.
Yours Ever dearest,
Joan

On Wednesday 19th June we went at midday to Notre Dame de Gravenchon some 30 miles E of Le Havre to meet Madame Jacqueline Drony (Rillot). She was a teacher of English at a local school [indecipherable word] often used by the Resistance as an [deleted] interpreter [/deleted] translator & we recounted the events of 7/8th August 1944.
We had been marking at Caen & were on our way back being routed East so as not to hinder the bridgehead. Unfortunately a 110 with the upward firing cannon eventually caught us after much evasion & it eventually hit us in the starboard wing & the centre of the aircraft & we were immediately on fire. Unfortunately, the inter com went so it was not possible to speak to any member of the crew. The fire [indecipherable word] rapidly no [three indecipherable words] just wagged the wings as a signal for the crew to abandon ship. The fire eventually filled most of the cockpit & in order to get out I had to drop through the flames to the escape hatch which fortunately

the crew members who had got out had jettisoned & much to my amazement I was out of the aircraft with the skin burnt on my hand & legs & my face to a lesser extent. Fortunately the parachute canopy held although the pack was smouldering. On looking down it seemed as though I was over sea & I was amazed to strike soft ground. It was a marsh area & there was at ground mist which had given the impression of water.
I then manage to rid myself of the parachute harness & decided to make for cover of some sort & eventually came to a farm. Some of them could speak English I knew no French except bonjure [sic] or bon sior [sic] & eventually mlle Pillot came along with a French Dr. Evins who [deleted] had apparently attend [/deleted] dealt with me.
