An account of the resource
21 items. The collection consists of one oral history interview with flight engineer Donald Ward Briggs (1924 - 2018), his logbook, memoirs and 16 wartime and post war photographs. He completed 62 operations with 156 Squadron Pathfinders flying from RAF Upwood. Post war, Donald Briggs retrained as a pilot flying Meteors and Canberras. He eventually joined the V-Force on Valiants and was the co-pilot for the third British hydrogen bomb test at Malden Island in 1957.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by Donald Briggs and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

Donald Briggs served as a flight engineer with 156 Squadron Pathfinders flying Lancasters from RAF Upwood between 27 May 1944 and 31 March 1945. The incomplete log book includes 62 daylight and night time operations to French, German, Dutch and Polish targets: battle fronts, Bayeux, Bois de Cassin, Chemnitz, Coblenz, Caen, Cagny, Calais, Cannantre, Cap Gris Nez (Calais), Disemont, Eindohven, Foret de Nieppe, Fort d’Englos, Harpenerweg, Hemmingstadt, Hildersheim, Lens, Lumbacs, Middel Straete, Miseburg oil refinery, Moerdish bridges, Montdidier, Nucourt, Nurnburg, Pollitz, Royan, Royen, Saint-Lô, St Philbert, Bochum, Chemnitz, Dessau, Dortmund, Dresden, Duisburg, Essen, Goch, Hamburg, Hanau, Hannover, Kiel, Kleve, Koblenz, Leuna, Mannheim, Münster, Neuss, Osnabrück, Renescure, Russleheim, Saarbrucken, Soest, Stuttgart, Szczecin, Vaires near Paris and Zeitz. The log book covers the training and operational duties of Flight Engineer Sergeant Harry Thomas Ansell, from 14 April 1944 to 24 May 1945. He trained at RAF Torquay, RAF St Athan, RAF Stockport and was stationed at RAF Wigsley, RAF Syerston, RAF Skellingthorpe and RAF Coningsby. Aircraft flown in were Stirling and Lancaster. He flew 34 operations with 61 Squadron, 15 daylight and 19 night, and 18 night operations with 83 Squadron. Targets included: Heraklion, Piraeus, Derna, Tamimi, Benghazi Harbour, Gazala, Mersa Matruh, Ras El Shaqiq, El Daba, Tobruk, Fuqa, Quatafiya, Düren, Munster, Mantes- Gassicourt rail yards, Haine St. Pierre rail yards, Hasselt rail yards, Rennes, Angers rail yards, Caen, Ravigny rail yards, Nucourt, Wesseling oil refineries, L’Hey, Kiel, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Notre Dame, Trossy St. Maximin, Karlsruhe, Merseburg, Essen, Ludwigshafen, Duisburg, Dusseldorf, Mönchengladbach, Troisdorf, Dortmund, Nuremberg, Hannover, Munich, Gelsenkirchen, Mainz, Wiesbaden, Osterfeld, Kleve, Wanne- Eickel, Chemnitz, Wesel, Worms, Hemmingstedt, Dorsten, Bottrop, Osnabruck, Berchtesgaden, Ypenburg and Rotterdam. Notable events are that Charles Godfrey undertook a search and rescue operation in a Defiant and during the operation to Trossy St Maximin 4 August 1944 his aircraft, Lancaster ND811, was brought down by anti-aircraft fire. Whilst he survived and evaded, his pilot, Ian Willoughby Bazalgette was awarded the Posthumous Victoria Cross. The hand written notes added to the end of the log book give a description to the crash, and his attempts to evade capture. Pilot Officer Godfrey also took part in Operation Manna, Operation Exodus and Operation Dodge.

123 items. The collection concerns Edward Thomas Henry Neale (b. 1922, 1395951 Royal Air Force) who served as a navigator with 37 Squadron in North Africa, the Middle East and Italy. The collection contains his training notebooks from South Africa as well as propaganda leaflets dropped by the allies in the Mediterranean theatre.
The collection also contains a photograph album, navigation logs and target photographs.

Observer’s and air gunner’s flying log book for H O Cannon (1802390) air gunner, covering the period from 29 December 1943 to 3 November 1944 and from 16 October 1952 to 8 October 1953. He was stationed at RAF Moffatt, RAF Qastina, RAF Tortorella, RAF Upwood and RAF Hemswell. Aircraft flown in were, Anson, Wellington, Defiant and Lincoln. He flew a total of 28 operations with 37 Squadron 3 daylight and 25 night and 2 supply drops. His pilots on operations were Sergeant Reynolds, Major Bayford, Sergeant Merrick and Flight Sergeant Taylor.

59 items. Flight Lieutenant John Ernest Francis 'Mitch' Mitchell. Joined the RAF as a boy entrant in 1934 and trained as a wireless operator. Flew on Vickers Virginia, Handley Page Heyford and Whitley before the war. Completed an operational tour on Whitley 1939-41. After being rested he flew a second tour of operations as a wireless operator with 207 Squadron before retraining as a pilot post war. Collection contains his flying logbooks, memoires of his air force career and first operations, lists of his operations, correspondence and photographs.
The collection has been donated to the IBCC Digital Archive by C A Wood and catalogued by Nigel Huckins.

John Mitchell’s wireless operator’s flying log book covering the period from 12 October 1941 to 9 August 1948. Detailing his flying training and operations flown as wireless operator. He was stationed at RAF Kinloss (19 OTU), RAF Forres (19 OTU), RAF Balnageith (19 OTU), RAF Langar (207 Squadron), RAF Spilsby (207 Squadron), RAF Winthorpe (1661 HCU), RAF North Luffenham (1653 HCU), RAF Abingdon (91 Group Communications Flight) and RAF Swinderby (21 Group Communications Flt). Aircraft flown in were Whitley, Lysander, Anson, Proctor and Monarch.Targets were Dusseldorf, Bochum, Freidrichshaven, Gelsenkirchen, La Spezia, Gladbach, Berlin, Leipzig, Tours, Bourg Leopald, Antwerp, St Valerie-en-Caux and Paris. He flew fifteen night operations with 207 Squadron. His pilots on operations were Flight Lieutenant Brandon-Trye, Pilot Officer King and Squadron Leader Pattinson.

Royal Canadian Air Force flying log book for aircrew other than pilot for J R Davies, bomb aimer, covering the period from 24 April 1943 to 3 August 1944, when he was missing on operations; his book is marked 'death presumed'. He was stationed at RCAF Lethbridge, RCAF Edmonton, RAF Staverton, RAF Moreton Valance, RAF Peplow, RAF Blyton, RAF Hemswell, and RAF Kirmington. Aircraft flown in were Anson, Blenheim, Wellington, Halifax, and Lancaster. He flew a total of 18 operations with 166 squadron, 10 night and 8 daylight. Targets were Mimoyeques, Saintes, Fleurs, Dijon, Pas de Calais, Caen, Revigny-sur-Ornain, Troan, Schelven-Beur, Wizernes, Kiel, Stuttgart, Cahagnes, Le Havre, Belle Croix les Bruyeres and Trossy. His pilot on operations was Pilot Officer Wagner.

Wireless operators flying log book for F W Elliott, covering the period from 1 October 1943 to 13 July 1947. Detailing his flying training, operations flown and post war flying duties with Radio Warfare Establishment. He was stationed at RAF Madley, RAF Llandwrog, RAF Chipping Warden, RAF Foulsham, RAF Watton and RAF Mildenhall. Aircraft flown in were Proctor, Dominie, Anson, Wellington, Halifax, Mosquito, Fortress and Lancaster. He flew a total of 38 operations with 192 squadron. Targets were Brest, Pas de Calais, Belgian-Dutch coast, Heligoland, Frisian Islands, North Sea patrol, Sylt, Julich, Mannheim, Munchengladbach, Ruhr and Stuttgart. His pilots on operations were Pilot Officer Earl, Flight Lieutenant Ford, Flying officer Irvine, Flight Lieutenant Hayter-Preston, Flight Sergeant Love and Squadron Leader Crotch.

Pilots flying log book for J H Bird, covering the period from 29 March 1943 to 24 August 1945. Detailing his flying training, operations flown and instructor duties. He was stationed at RAF Induna, RAF Kumalo, RAF Gianaclis, RAF Peplow, and Italy. Aircraft flown in were Tiger Moth, Oxford, Wellington, Albemarle and Horsa. He flew a total of 38 night operations with 104 squadron. Targets were Porto Farraio, Orvieto, Valmontone Road, Viterbo Road, San Stephano, River Danube, Giurgiu, Terni Road, Almasfuzito, Trieste, Feuersbrunn Aerodrome, Bucharest, Brod, Milan, Fiume, Kraljevo, Valence, St Valentin, Miskolc, Bologna, Pesaro, Ferrara, Tatoi aerodrome, Brescia, Szekesfehervar, Salonika, Kalamaki and Verona. His pilots for his first 'second dickie' operations were Flight Sergeant Holmes and Warrant Officer Harrison.
