Dear Marie,
I received your surface mail dated 17th & 20th of Feb when I returned from leave the other day but so far have not yet had any air-graphs. I’m not quite so badly off as quite a few of the boys who haven’t had any word from home to date. There is a mad rush daily for the distribution but usually there are many more [indecipherable word] faces than happy ones come away. It is the most talked of subject these days. I know you’ve a lot to do but try and [indecipherable word] me posted with a weekly airgraph at least.
From the postmark on your cable for which I thank you – I see you’ve been to [indecipherable word] and I hope you both enjoyed it and showed some benefit from the change. Glad to know Eileen pulled through alright & will write her on confirmation of her new school. I was very surprised to find Dan hadn’t rejoined his unit.
I’ve seen some pretty good shows lately and enjoyed the musical “Thousands Cheer” [deleted word] immensely, [two indecipherable words] show I’ve seen for ages. I thought Deanna Durbin’s “His Butler’s Sister” was woeful. I saw “Claudia” last night but wasn’t greatly impressed. We’ve been getting more than our share of P.T lately. We’ve all been woefully stiff – hence no dances and all pictures. Had a small celebration with the boys on Easter Saturday night – 8th but we have been pretty quiet and getting plenty of sleep. Of course pictures are out at 9 p.m. when it is still [indecipherable words]

Dear Jim,
As I’ve written home fairly regularly of late I suppose you’ve heard most of my doings. I’ve just returned from a spot of leave in the country and, although it was very quiet, I rather enjoyed it. It was pouring rain – it apparently always does in Cornwall – and the country certainly shows the benefit of it. The chap I went with, Mick Flanagan, was formerly a farmer. The first couple of days he spent boasting of his accomplishments and consequently talked us into all the jobs about the place. However we really enjoyed it although, whatever it was, I always [two unreadable words] previous experience. Amongst everything else we had plenty of riding[?] & must have reduced the pony’s girth considerably.
There is not much I can write about without losing my [unreadable word] so you can just take it that everything is O.K. I have met [unreadable word] of chaps of my acquaintance. It is amazing whom you really do meet. I wasn’t speaking to him but I think I saw Maurice [three or four unreadable words]. He must have only been passing through for I’ve not seen him again. “Shorty” O’[unreadable name], from your parish, is no longer with me. We are lucky to have a Church not far from [three or four unreadable words] I’ve only heard from home twice I’m rather behind [unreadable word] with the news, but Eileen was over her operation then and everyone else was aparently[sic] alright. I hope you like Wang”
Regards and God’s blessings. Pat

AIR MINISTRY
(Casualty Branch),
73-77, OXFORD STREET,W.1.
27th April, 1944.
P.408122/7/P.4.A.3.
Madam,
I am directed to refer to your letter of 13th April, 1944, and to inform you with regret that no further news has been received concerning your husband since the Departments letter of 31st January, 1944.
As there were, unhappily, no survivors among the crew of the Stirling aircraft in which your husband was air gunner, the circumstances under which the aircraft was lost are not known.
It is also anticipated that, as the first report from the International Red Cross Committee failed to include the date on which your husband was buried at Eindhoven-Woensel, there may be considerable delay before this information is received, but enquiries are continuing and should any news be received, you will be informed immediately.
Your husbands name, together with the names of his crew, has been included in Casualty Communique No. 384 and will appear in the ‘Times’ in approximately two weeks time.
I am again to express the profound sympathy of the Department with you, in your sad loss.
I am, Madam,
Your obedient Servant,
[signature]
for Director of Personal Services
Mrs. D. C. H. Ellis,
253, Balham High Road,
S.W.17.
