4/3/44.
Dear Lefty,
Jack and I heard the grand news to-night when we came on duty and felt we must convey our warmest congratulations to you.
We fear we did not treat you with the respect due to a person winning such an honour but trust you will forgive us. If we could only re-live the past fortnight with our present knowledge we wouldn’t even touch the soles of your feet with a large pole!!! We hope that you are enjoying a greater measure of peace than we found it possible to allow you in Ward 14.
The best of luck and good health
[page break]
always.
Yours sincerely
W. Meakin & Jock.

A. 437965 F/Sgt. R.R. JOHNSON. - Bomb Aimer. Killed.
A. 428968 F/Sgt. G.N. DIXON. - W/Operator. Killed
1606174 Sgt. W.E. WELSH. - F/Engineer. Killed
This crew were on their 10th Operational sortie.
[underlined] Narrative: [/underlined]
During the sortie, prevailing winds had been slightly different from forecast and this had necessitated the use of increased speed and greater fuel consumption. [indecipherable word] was reached at 6,000ft. And navigation lights were switched on. Height was lost down to 3,000ft. at the Wash, and a large amount of enemy fighter activity was seen over Norfolk. All lights, including resin lights, were therefore switched off.
2. On arrival at base airfield (Driffield), Flying Control gave instructions for aircraft lights to be dim, and for this aircraft to circle at 1,700ft. Later the aircraft was called down to 1,400ft, and finally given “prepare to land”. However, when approaching the funnel Flying Control did not give permission to land and the aircraft had to overshoot. The Pilot went round again, was given permission to land, and then when at 150ft. On R/T to proceed on a dog leg.
3. The Pilot climbed to 1,500ft. And flew West towards Pocklington on a Gee lattice line. The flight Engineer reported only 16 minutes endurance left and the Pilot therefore climbed up to 4,000ft. In case the aircraft had to be abandoned. The Bomb Aimer was in the nose and he reported a fighter coming from the port bow down. The Mid Upper gunner swing [sic] his guns in this direction but was unable to get a visual and the next moment the fighter opened fire. Fishpond was not in [indecipherable word].
4. Events then happened with great rapidity and in the opinion of a witness on the ground only 30/40 seconds elapsed between the bomber being set on fire and the subsequent crash. The Mid Upper gunner stated that both port engines were on fire. The H2S. modulator received a direct hit and the port side of the fuselage forward of the rear exit was set alight. The Navigator, who was at his table, saw a strike on the fuselage just above his table. The Aircraft went fairly quickly into a dive to port and the Pilot gave emergency bale out instructions.
5. The Mid Upper Gunner opened the rear exit door with difficulty and taking his helmet off, left head first. He was wearing suede boots and made a heavy landing in a field, a lightly spraining his ankle,
/over..
[page break]
6. The Navigator had to return to the rest position to recover his parachute. He passed The Bomb Aimer who, with his parachute on, was making for the front hatch. On reaching the rear exit the Flight Engineer was in front of the Navigator but delayed jumping and the Navigator left first. He left feet first and made a clean exit, although the aircraft by this time was in a dive. He made a good landing although he had left at very low height.
7. The Rear Gunner turned his guns to port and had difficulty to keep the port door open as the slip stream blew it back. He was wearing suede boots, size 10 and is right foot caught between the knee guard and the box under his seat. The aircraft was in a steep dive and flames were around the turret when he finally extricated himself by pulling his right foot out of his boot. He pulled the ‘D’ ring quickly but made a very heavy landing and was knocked out, but sustained no serious injuries.
8. All the other members of the crew were killed. The Flight Engineer was the only other member of the crew to leave the aircraft but he apparently left at too low an altitude. The Pilot had fitted his chest type parachute on as soon as the flight Engineer had warned of petrol shortage.
9. The Rear gunner stated that exit from the rear turret should be made easier and suggest the fitting of a saddle type seat which would occupy less space.

Thursday
Dear Father,
I am sorry I haven’t answered your letter sooner but we have been away from Base for several days, and I only received your very welcome letter just before we left last Friday night.
I am pleased to hear that you are getting good food, especially as they seem to be making you do plenty of route marches, I had a letter from Mother yesterday and she mentioned that you had done a six mile route march. Anyhow I hope you are keeping fit and are having a good time.
We have done quite a few raids recently, being on the Schweinfurt and
[page break]
Augsburg raids last week, and were on again last night when we visited Stuttgart for the second time. We did very well on the Schweinfurt raid and brought back some good photographs, and one of them was of the arming point – we were very pleased about this.
Coming back from the Augsburg raid we had to land on the South Coast and put down on a Fighter drome early on Saturday morning. We had to stop there until yesterday morning as the weather was too bad up here to allow us to get back, we couldn’t understand the reason for this as the weather was so good where we were, until we flew back yesterday morning and saw the [inserted] heavy [/inserted] snow all over the country. The weather where we were [deleted] at [/deleted] was simply
[page break]
grand, fairly warm with sunshine all day, and these few days did us a lot of good, and we were sorry when we had to come back.
There was a small town only two miles from Camp and we spent nearly all our evenings there, going to the flicks every night. On Sunday we knew early that we shouldn’t be going back that day so had the whole day in front of us, and after breakfast Johnny, Gerry and I walked into town together, where we went to church. The walk back made us [deleted] very [/deleted] ready for something to eat, [deleted] and [/deleted] the food in the Mess was fairly good, and I thought a little better than the food we get
[page break]
in our own Mess.
After dinner we all walked down to the Station and caught the electric train to Brighton, which wasnt [sic] very far away. We had a wizard time here, although we felt rather conspicuous walking about in our flying [deleted] f [/deleted] boots, sweaters etc., however after a quick look round we turned into a café and had a good meal. After this we went to watch an ice-hockey match England V Canada, it was the first I had seen and I enjoyed it very much, it’s a very fast game and therefore good to watch. Coming out of here we went along to ‘Sherrys’, where despite our flying boots we
[page break]
danced and had a very good time. Our train left at eleven o’clock and by then we had spent nearly all the small amount of money we happened to be carrying with us, but had had a very enjoyable day.
We came back yesterday to find that several crews had been sent on leave the day before, as they thought the stand down had started and the weather was then fairly bad, and now we are having to wait [deleted] f [/deleted] a little longer for our leave (which should start on Saturday). We weren’t very pleased about this and
[page break]
are still hoping that we still might get away by Saturday, however I might get some more news about this tonight so will leave this letter open so that I can let you know. How long are you going to be at Wetherby and are you you [sic] able to get home for the weekend?
You know that we had our photographs in the paper a few weeks ago well I am going to write tonight for a few of these photographs and will let you have one as soon as I get them.
Well I think that is all the ‘gen’ for the moment so cheerio and look after yourself.
Your loving Son,
Mervyn.
[page break]
4 March 1944
This is Mervyn’s last letter to his father Alexander. Dated by the postmark as 4 March it seems unlikely that he made his leave the following week as he hoped as he was killed ten days later. It would appear that Granddad had volunteered for some activity despite his advancing years and had gone on a six mile route march. Again, he describes his adventure in Brighton and enjoying the dance at Sherrys.
